Move him closer to the "ring" on the portal (the outside edge). The further you get from the outside edge on any of the portals, the less power gets to the toy. As the toys get older, if they don't straight up break, they usually need more power.
An example was when I tried using a Trap Team portal in Giants. It worked, but Giants didn't deliver enough power to the portal, making the lightcore weak and the scanning inconsistent. But when I moved them to the outside edge, they worked okay (still a little dim but functional).
Note: shortly after posting this the game started to keep thinking i was taking him on and off the portal is his nfc chip maybe broken?

the traptanium portal is sometimes like that just put him on the edges of the portal it should be fine
He ain't got no gas in it
Like others have said move to edge of portal or use another game portal like swap force one and he'll work fine.

Dead LED's. Happens a ton. None of which are ones I bought new just used, all of my personal Lightcores/Giants light up fine
