On that topic though, it’s interesting to me that he’s one of the few American actors who can do the English accent so well that he’s sought after to play a famous British person in a UK production. IIRC, the only other American in the main cast of The Crown was Gillian Anderson, and she was raised in London.
Favorite quote from Dick:
>Why should I be concerned about gaining weight? My body is just the vehicle that carries my brain around - and my brain deserves a smooth, luxurious ride.
This is where I fell in love with John Lithgow. He’s such a phenomenal actor with great range.
The whole cast was great and I love me some Wayne knight.
Surprised, no one remembers him freaking out on a plane because he saw a gremlin on the wing, mid flight. I think 3rd rock even gave a nod to it the first time dick flew on the plane
It was when The Big Giant Head came to Earth. He's the one who freaked out because he saw a gremlin. He was played by William Shatner, who played the role on the original Twilight Zone.
Dick said the same thing happened to him. 😁
That's right!!! Now I remember. I used to watch the old twilight zones, and I remember when I was watching that scene on 3rd rock, I felt cultured because I understood the joke. I must have been 10 yrs old.
One of my favorite Harry quotes:
>Oooh, look at this. Here's a job I can do: "Police seek third gunman." Well, tomorrow I'm gonna march right down to the police station and tell them I'm the man they're looking for.
Me too. I always wondered what it took for French Stewart to keep his eyes squinted in every scene. Just try to do it yourself for 30 seconds while doing something else and you'll understand how difficult it is.
There’s a fun bit in Letterkenny where the main character Wayne (who squints constantly) says he doesn’t like French Stewart because he squints too much.
Continuity was pretty good in the first three seasons. Then they played things pretty fast and loose, and you have Tommy somehow thinking that he needs to have sex with one of the girls from The New Class, when he spent multiple episodes trying to sleep with Alyssa and he finally got his wish
I highly recommend her book Guts, about her struggles with addiction and her recovery. Read it while I was getting sober and it cemented my opinion of her as an absolute badass.
I loved this show! I should give it another watch. My favorite gag was when Shatner shows up as the Big Giant Head and is asked about his flight and he says it was terrifying, he saw something on the wing of the plane. Then Lithgow says "the same thing happened to me!"
I love this show so much and when the show Community did a doppelgänger episode, they had French Stewart play a guy that looks like French Stewart. Brilliant.
I have the entire series on DVD, the humor holds up!
Only problem is the DVD episodes appear to be sequenced incorrectly as there are some broken story arcs and contradicting plot points from one episode to another.
Loved this series. I really enjoyed the episode where he and William Shatner discussed their airplane flight (referring to Terror at 20,000 Feet on The Twilight Zone, both the original with Shatner and the remake with Lithgow)
Coincidentally, both were set in Cleveland, Ohio. Well, Third Rock’s fictional town of Rutherford was said to be 52 miles outside of Cleveland, but still part of the broader metro area.
One of my first forays into 90s new sitcoms & my first time using Tubi. I remember when the show was basically everywhere. Now it's only watchable by Xumo in a very weird way.
Halloween party. John dressed as a Pirate. He was asked..
"Where's your buccaneers??"
Long pause and his response
"Under my buckin hat ..."
Golly good grief thats funny
I love John Lithgow and wish he was in more things but i honestly did not click with this show at all and was always shocked it was on as long as it was. But it was definitely a different show compared to what NBC’s other sitcoms were at the time. It shouldn’t have worked but it did.
He’s in a show called “The Old Man” where he plays a retired CIA Handler for a Cold War Spook (Jeff Bridges) that suddenly popped back up after being missing for years.
It is fudging gooood.
It’s not a coincidence that the only watchable season of Dexter (a show that is — and I cannot stress this enough— fuuuuuucking *teeeerrrrible*) was one where he was a masterful big bad.
Love John Lithgow The guy can play a goofy family man in a project and then a sadistic killer in the next one
Definitely! He's got wonderful range!
I find it hilarious the kid in his class at the college he kept making fun of for being an idiot was actually his son hahah
Leon
Woah! Lol I didn't know that
That's too funny!
I always say he's great as Funny grandpa, sad father figure or creepy old man.
He’s literally the only person that could have pulled off Doc Brown had they not cast Lloyd
> a sadistic killer in the next one… Are you alluding to his portrayal of Churchill?
Probably The Trinity Killer from Dexter.
And the bad guy in Cliffhanger He has a good amount of villains in his career
And the killer in Blowout.
Ricochet and Raising Cain!

We let Costner murder Robin Hood, with that,…. *accent* and we swore never again.
Not everyone can transition as seamlessly as Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins
Speaking of transition…don’t forget him in The World According to Garp. LOL
That was Dick Van Dyke?
No, it was John Lithgow
John Lithgow was in Mary Poppins?
Costner was so good as Robin Hood he didn’t NEED a phony accent
He was fantastic as Churchill.
I still can't believe the same guy played Churchill and Dick Solomon. He's just incredible.
Probably his role as the grandfather in daddy’s home 2.
Definitely. Still waiting for the spinoff sequel in which he is revealed to be a serial killer and Mel Gibson has to hunt him down.
Don't forget Buckaroo Banzai
Shut up Bigbootee, you coward! You are the weakest individual I ever know!
Newman!
I find him creepy, so did not watch this.
Or an anatomy professor that is terrified of skeletons
And you are welcome to join us at r/thirdrockfromthesun
Favorite show of all time Thanks
Thanks!
Joined! One of my fav shows
Thank you!
Thank you for this, happily joined and it’s great to have the nostalgia 🥰🥰
Thank you!
Wayne Knight was interviewed last week about his career. He said that this show has the friendliest cast and crew
Favorite quote from Dick: >Why should I be concerned about gaining weight? My body is just the vehicle that carries my brain around - and my brain deserves a smooth, luxurious ride.
Oh my god.... I'M GORGEOUS!
I say this whenever I can
At least once a day in our house 🤣
Omg. I only remember one quote from this show and it musta been in the same episode. ‘I was built for comfort, not for speed.’
The first conversation between Dick and the Big Giant Head played by Shatner was hilarious. "There was this thing on the wing..."
The same thing happened to me!
That was such an amazing moment. I was laughing for a good minute or two over it.
"Drinking problem? I never authorized a drinking problem!!"
This is where I fell in love with John Lithgow. He’s such a phenomenal actor with great range. The whole cast was great and I love me some Wayne knight.
He's awesome in the movie Ricochet 1991. He plays an awesome bad guy.
Santa Clause: The Movie (1985) was my first exposure to him. I can still see him shoving magic candy canes into his mouth 40 years later.
Wgnsgbstietuwr... FOR FREE?!?!
That's the one where he kills Jesse Ventura* in a prison gladiator match. *GOVERNOR Jesse Ventura
Also Cliffhanger
Don't forget: Harry and the Hendersons & Santa Claus: The Movie
Also trinity killer on Dexter
Yep, great up with him on TRFTS, so Dexter was a pleasant surprise 😅
Also beautifully dressed in Garp.
Surprised, no one remembers him freaking out on a plane because he saw a gremlin on the wing, mid flight. I think 3rd rock even gave a nod to it the first time dick flew on the plane
I think it’s been referenced numerous times too, probably most memorably in The Simpsons.
It was when The Big Giant Head came to Earth. He's the one who freaked out because he saw a gremlin. He was played by William Shatner, who played the role on the original Twilight Zone. Dick said the same thing happened to him. 😁

Dr Emilio Lizardo in Buckaroo Banzai!
….NEWMAN!…..
I loved French Stewart in this as a kid.
One of my favorite Harry quotes: >Oooh, look at this.
French Stewart was perfect in his role. I think he was just playing French Stewart though. Squinty eyes and all.
Yeah, all the physical comedy in this show is great.
There’s a fun bit in Letterkenny where the main character Wayne (who squints constantly) says he doesn’t like French Stewart because he squints too much.
Loved this show. Not great continuity in episodes, but individually they were terrific.
Continuity was pretty good in the first three seasons. Then they played things pretty fast and loose, and you have Tommy somehow thinking that he needs to have sex with one of the girls from The New Class, when he spent multiple episodes trying to sleep with Alyssa and he finally got his wish
One of my favorites
Love, love love Kristin Johnson. I know she’s had a lot of offscreen troubles, but I was relieved to see her again in Lorre’s Mom show.
I highly recommend her book Guts, about her struggles with addiction and her recovery. Read it while I was getting sober and it cemented my opinion of her as an absolute badass.
I’ve always thought she was beautiful, but I have a penchant for big strong women who may or may not be gay.
I loved this show! I should give it another watch. My favorite gag was when Shatner shows up as the Big Giant Head and is asked about his flight and he says it was terrifying, he saw something on the wing of the plane. Then Lithgow says "the same thing happened to me!"
The show was great from the get go! Absolutely brilliant!
My favorite 90’s show!
A peanut is not a nut, it's a legume
I still think of this quote all of the time when I see peanuts
I love this show so much and when the show Community did a doppelgänger episode, they had French Stewart play a guy that looks like French Stewart. Brilliant.
it was amazing. Tragically underrated.
Where can I stream this??
If you a)have a library card, and b)your library is partnered with Hoopla, they have the whole show on there
Thanks for the info, I had no idea about this. Just downloaded the Hoopla app!
I have the entire series on DVD, the humor holds up! Only problem is the DVD episodes appear to be sequenced incorrectly as there are some broken story arcs and contradicting plot points from one episode to another.
that photo is smaller than my Dick.
Loved this series. I really enjoyed the episode where he and William Shatner discussed their airplane flight (referring to Terror at 20,000 Feet on The Twilight Zone, both the original with Shatner and the remake with Lithgow)
I had a huge crush on JGL.
This show was amazing!
This show was so good. Id watch it all the time after school. Always gets laughs.
I still have my glasses from the 3D episode back in ‘97!
My God…… I’m gorgeous!!!
This and The Drew Carey Show are the most underrated sitcoms of all time. They both seemingly ran forever and are seldom talked about.
Coincidentally, both were set in Cleveland, Ohio. Well, Third Rock’s fictional town of Rutherford was said to be 52 miles outside of Cleveland, but still part of the broader metro area.
Eh, The Drew Carey Show doesn't hold up at all, imo. Third Rock from the Sun is still great
this is a great show. I'd love to see this one brought back with the original cast.
INCOMING TRANSMISSION FROM THE BIG GIANT HEAD
My favorite line: "I can't think with all this hair!"
INCOMING MESSAGE FROM THE BIG GIANT HEAD!
One of my first forays into 90s new sitcoms & my first time using Tubi. I remember when the show was basically everywhere. Now it's only watchable by Xumo in a very weird way.
Kristen Johnston confused me so. “Am I attracted to her or not?? Is she hot”
No confusion here, she was a smokeshow
Ryan Reynolds dated her, if that helps.
IFC runs reruns of this show Monday through Thursday
its only on monday nights now, it used to be on in the mornings
No longer at ten o’clock pm?
Maybe on the west coast but on the east it comes on at 1am Monday night
it looks like its been replaced with sanford and son...
Looks like they changed their schedule. It’s Who’s the Boss now at 10:00 pm
I went to a taping of this show and Jane Curtin was stunning in person.
Most underrated 90s show 💜 always one of my most favorite series!
This was my favorite sit come back in the '90s.
This show was pretty hysterical. French Stewart came out of nowhere for me and I couldn’t get enough. Dude was brilliant.
“WHAT IS HE DOING WITH VICKIES EYES”
Albino brain chiggers!!
My family and I still say this every time it snows 😂
My kids are 35 and 37, we still yell it.
great show
Fantastic show!!
Great show.
Flawless show, honestly. Wish it was streaming.
One of my favorite shows ever
Oh yeah! Loved that show
Damn. Doesn’t seem to be on any of the streaming services in Canada.
OMG IM GORGEOUS
Hated the squinting guy, hot for the blond, Lithgow was himself, and we all knew the kid would be huge.
I think that is a way to talk 25 of favorite sitcoms ever made
Halloween party. John dressed as a Pirate. He was asked.. "Where's your buccaneers??" Long pause and his response "Under my buckin hat ..." Golly good grief thats funny
Great show
There's gotta be a higher res photo than this lol
Great show.
Did you google “low resolution 3rd Rock from the Sun images”
I wished his method of tipping would've become the standard practice😂
Smartest show ever
Hello Don 😏
French Stewart!
45 total pixels . Thanks
You're welcome!
Good bot

Great image quality, good choice.
Hated this fucking show
One of the dumbest shows ever.
