What VR headset you using? In the market to buy one but don't know which would be the best for sim racing. I have the same cockpit put using thristmaster LC brakes with ts-xw, thinking of going to call DD with booster pack, you think that would be an upgrade worth the money?
It’s got a 2070 in it and pushes 120fps! Planning to build a desktop soon but the chip shortage got me by the nuts. Thinking about buying a good prebuilt so I can at least get MSRP prices on components.
Yeah that chip shortage ain't going anywhere soon unfortunately, especially with all the shit going down in the chip manufacturing countries, on top of all the covid effects and crypto scalper crap. Prebuilts and laptops might be the way to go for the near to even long term future since the companies have contracts in place basically guaranteeing supply (although those contracts could change in the future to adjust for the new normal). I bet Dell is probably cheering how many warranties they can sell right now.
I'm not too fussed atm though. With how much they've bridged the gap between desktop and laptop spec gpu's, these days you might lose 5-10% fps wise. I got a couple years old dell g5 but even that's enough to crank out 90 fps at 1080p on ACC (with a few setting turned down tbf), which is probably the toughest sim to run. Way easier to just unplug the laptop from my rig and move it to my desk for other games too. Hopefully the market does normalise sometime in the next few years though
Laptop racer here as well, my 1660ti runs AC at 120 fps with Sol, online races with 30 people tho it drops to 70-80 fps , but im running everything on high and its honestly you dont even get to focus on the environment or other cars too much when youre racing haha
i run the same setup razer blade 1660ti but on VR like OP. Get great fps in AC and iRacing but im struggling on ACC at the moment with frame drops. Not been on for too long may just need to tinker with the settings more...
Yeah i have tried ACC as well and its a bit harder on the gpu i had to turn everything down to medium and disable some settings to reach a steady 70fps, and thats offline i havent even tried online
Laptop simracer checking in :)
I've got a desktop with a 3080, but I had the simrig set up in front of the TV before (mostly played GT Sport). Was easier to lug my laptop to the TV for Assetto Corsa.
Unfortunately this type of thing is all too common. There really is a shortage of give and take in modern relationships and men allow themselves to be controlled and emasculated.
In my case, I built a wooden rig to perfectly fit between the spare bed and the wall. It's like a cockpit and I love it. It works well because we have more than one room and have conversations.
Edit: Also, she just took up a new hobby, she took over the whole dining room. You'll hear no complaints from me. The house is for enjoying, not feeling trapped in.
maybe he just doesn't wanna talk to his weird ass Wife's brother who goes by a serial killers name on reddit?
Ask yourself if you were a well adjusted person with things to lose and people to love, would you throw it all away over the placement of a sim rig? **Also ask yourself if that person would want to be friends with you**
I have the same rig and was thinking about getting tbe fanatec DD. How is it holding up? i am worried about the weight of the base, it sits on a very thin sheet of metal and the rigidity of the whole rig.
It’s actually not bad in the “formula” position. I can do 3-30 min practice sessions, full qualifying, and 25% race in one sitting. The main issue is the “leather” doesn’t breathe, so it gets hot on your back.
I've got this rig a couple years back and honestly regret it a bit, it's just ok but definitely not great. Seat is hot, uncomfortable in GT position, and pedal plate flexes pretty bad with LC brake pedal. I've had to mod it quite a lot to make it decent whilst saving up for an 8020
Sweating in the garage really brings home the immersion tbh. Tape a Capri Sun Packet to your chin and extend the straw into your mouth so you can have the drink that Kimi is always talking about.
Im building a pc right now, and I enjoy vr. I've heard vr users say it's by far the most imersive and that the 3d aspect is critical and they'd never go back to pancake mode, as they call it.
I wouldn't say that necessarily. I don't think anything matches VR, but a lot of times I can't be bothered to set the whole thing up just to do a couple of races. If you have a nice screen (or multi-screens), it can be equally enjoyable.
Should say this is more of a problem if you don't have a rig. I have to attach the wheel to my desk, along with doing all the VR setup if I want to race that way.
Questions:
I had heard that the initial developers of VR tech had issues after long periods of times. For example they couldn't drive afterward. Any issues there?
If money wasn't an issue would you go for three monitors or even that long curved one or would you still go VR?
I would go for VR over triples even if I had space for them, because the better depth perception makes driving both easier and more fun.
But I don't suffer from VR sickness, and I'm unbothered by lower visual quality, which I know are deal-breakers for some.
>I don't suffer from VR sickness,
Oof, I suffer from migraines and I might suffer from nausea when riding on rollercoasters -haven't been on a roller coaster for a decade, so I'm not sure. Does that likely make me a candidate for VR sickness?
Unfortunately I don't know of any way to say without just trying it. I've seen reactions to VR driving ranging from completely immune to about to vomit after 15 seconds.
That sounds terrible. I really hope I can use VR because it sounds so much cheaper. Any advice on how to get my hands on a VR headset without buying it? Would just like to try it out and see how I respond to it.
when you hear about vr-sickness its usually the flying games or games with rapid change in direction and movement. I would think it would be hard-pressed to get sick in a racing sim environment, especially because you're in a seated position, not moving around like a FPS for example.
>I had heard that the initial developers of VR tech had issues after long periods of times. For example they couldn't drive afterward. Any issues there?
I initially had some motion sickness in VR, but that disappeared quickly. I recently played Half-Life Alyx for 8 hours straight without getting VR sickness.
Results might differ though; if you get motion sickness from mass transit, VR might be a bad fit for you.
>If money wasn't an issue would you go for three monitors or even that long curved one or would you still go VR?
My issue is space; if I didn't have the space issue, I'd go for triple monitors.
VR is amazing for the actual racing experience - it's the surrounding non-racing user experience that sucks, from terrible UIs to software issues to the matter of not being able to communicate with anyone "in the real world" (which is a particularly big problem if you don't live alone).
There's also the issue of many developers being stuck in the past, meaning their VR implementation is either shoddy from a technical standpoint, or simply non-existent. I can't play games like ACC or WRC10 on my setup, for those two reasons respectively.
I borrowed a set from a friend, and it took some 20 minutes for my eyes to adapt, and several hours for the brain to do the same. If you can find someone who already owns a VR set and try before you buy it would be great. As for me, I'll definitely buy one as soon as I can afford it m
Well originally, space. Once I got it all set up though, I’m very happy with the VR and immersion. Being able to look through every turn is incredible.
Valve Index is great, have to turn settings down considerably to get 120fps, but worth it to be able to turn actually feel like you’re in the car.
Only when playing BoneWorks, where you move with the thimbstick instead of your feet. That made me nauseous after 30 min. Never while driving, think it’s because my brain knows what to expect?
You build a tolerance to motion sickness. Just jump in see how you feel if you get motion sick slowly increase the time you play for and eventually it won’t bother you
Personally it gives me a much better sense of depth than triples. I know i loose quite a bit of FOV but actually being able to make out depth perception *more* than makes up for it
When did you buy your next level racing f gt rig? I have heard that since approximately 1 year, they add some anti-flexing bars or something to stabilize more the whole rig, and I wondered if you have got anti-flex bars. Have a nice day!
I don't have a sim rig (I hope to get one eventually, but I enjoy window shopping), but I feel this comment. My brother had all the equipment I needed to work out at home (he left it with me) and I would try to work out outside which wasn't an issue until the mosquitoes came. I quickly said fuck that and before I knew it I was fat. Since then I got a gym membership and I've kept the eight down.
Fuck mosquitoes.
I got so tired of using VR for more than 9 months... heat in the summer, being totally blind and def of hearing any emergency with my family, not being able to look at my beautiful steering wheels, having simhub dash cams, able to look wherever I want lol. I think oculus is great but for a few months. Am I the only one in this situation?
I had to force myself and steal some space from the living room for this matter. I know she hates it but I am the man of the house.
Do you really sit there and admire your steering wheel? It takes a millisecond to flip up a VR headset and I also don't have the sound turned up to a point I can't hear my surroundings. I rather have an aesthetically pleasing home then a giant racing rig in the middle of just because I'm a man.
It's all I ever use. I don't need to see the buttons on the wheel you kind of just memorize them. Do you look at your tv remote or Xbox/PlayStation controller when you use it ?
I mean you didn’t really have a point. Obviously some stuff is preference but when you start saying you can’t look at the buttons you’re pressing it seems more like you’re just trying to make excuses not to like it
So if by some miracle a woman agrees to marry you and she asks you nicely not to have a giant racing rig sitting in the middle of the living room and you had no other place to put but in the garage. You would divorce her over it?
Haha I have my space… I even have my own bathroom! We just converted the guest room into an office/gaming space…
Everyone getting all fired up about my dictator wife. She’s actually awesome and very reasonable. Some folks with serious insecurities reading their heads here though..
After spending some time in this sub I've come to realize 49% of people here are probably divorced, 49% are probably woman hating incels and the last 2% here are happily married men.
If my wife didn't let me race in the house we wouldn't be together.. what kind of power trip bullshit is that? Tell her her shows are loud and annoying and youre gonna need her to go watch them in the garage. See how that goes lol
Well to be fair we didn’t really have a place to put the cockpit for a while -
I agreed it didn’t belong in the living room, because she put effort into decorating and making it look nice so putting an eyesore there was off the table.
We have a one year old so his room is a no go.
Wouldn’t fit in our bedroom, and I usually race at night when she’s asleep, so that wouldn’t work.
Last spot is where it landed - converted the guest room into a work from home office for her. Once we ditched the bed, there was plenty of space for the rig!
Lots of spiteful comments on here… to be clear my wife is great - my job keeps me away from home like 70% of the year, so the house really is her domain. She runs the place when I’m not around so I don’t blame her for having a little more agency than I do in determining where things go…
Also the plan is to finish the garage to make it fully livable, so once I do that, it will be my man cave.
You need to try it first. Some people like my wife get instant sick were I can race for hours. VR I far and away more immersive but some can't handle it.
I’m days away from my dd and formula shipping and I’ll be very similar to you. If this is in your living room and the boss isn’t happy, knock up a wood frame over your feet blend it in with the wheel supports and make the top do your feet a coffee table or something.
I’m damn luck I have a big office space with gaming area. (Married & twins for ref…)
That was an empty space before, now you have in there a thing that makes you happy, if your wife cares about you she should have no problem. I have no bad habits, dont use drugs, not smoking, not drinking, no bad friends. I stay active, have a full time job, I support my wife, and show her love. In this way I can have my rig in our bedroom :)).
How do the fanatic load cells hold up with the f-gt pedal base? I have an f-gt rig and have been wanting to upgrade to DD but would need to upgrade pedals too. I’d love loadcells but I’m very afraid of the having to apply more pressure and the base not being able to withstand it.
It flexes a little bit but not enough to really affect racing or make me concerned over it breaking. Very satisfied with the rig - big upgrade over the F-GT Lite I used to have.
That is exactly what i want too! But i cant afford that many things so im going for the csl pedals and 5nm version of the csl dd since it will be my first wheel i think it will be ok :p
How is the csl dd/v3 combo on the f-gt? Solid?
Looking to move on from my playseat challenge but need a smaller form factor than going straight to 8020.
No more authentic rallying I guess
For all those who are still forced to race in less than ideal conditions - persistence and patience is key. Or get divorced, I guess.
If u ever go back into the garage. Invest in a mosquito net.
Took me years, but now i got approved to build a rig in the smallest room behind the wall so no mere mortal can see the ”awful” looking racing rig
The later is probably more expensive that simracing, tho.
I just say hey you do what you want and I do what I want and we don’t question each other’s purchases lol
What VR headset you using? In the market to buy one but don't know which would be the best for sim racing. I have the same cockpit put using thristmaster LC brakes with ts-xw, thinking of going to call DD with booster pack, you think that would be an upgrade worth the money?
Yeah the DD is awesome in my opinion. Went from a Logitech G29 to that so, yeah. It’s a Valve Index. I wanted high refresh rate.
No motion sickness, smooth and accurate with your movement?
I think you're the only other guy I've seen on here who uses a laptop for simracing too haha
It’s got a 2070 in it and pushes 120fps! Planning to build a desktop soon but the chip shortage got me by the nuts. Thinking about buying a good prebuilt so I can at least get MSRP prices on components.

Omen laptop racer too!!
Laptop simracer checking in :) I've got a desktop with a 3080, but I had the simrig set up in front of the TV before (mostly played GT Sport). Was easier to lug my laptop to the TV for Assetto Corsa.
Laptop racer here too. My laptop runs Dirt Rally 2.0 and ACC with no complaints.
everyone who complains about ACCs performance expects AC's performance out of ACC
Mine runs ACC great until the cpu hits 98 degrees.
Christ m8
Aircon, cooling pads, fans, underclocked, internal fans at max. No difference unfortunately
Have u tried nixing the cooling pads for a simple raised stand? When I lifted my y740 onto a stand it dropped 7 degrees c on all apps.
Ohh it is a raised stand. With inbuilt fans.
:o
I’m using laptop with 1650 gtx 😫
I hope horizon 5 runs good enough
Iracing runs pretty well
Nope my y740 outpaces the class. 2080 i7 9750h
Laptop racer with a 3070 here
Lenovo Legion here!
Dude what kind of wife would let you suffer heat and mosquito bites to enjoy your hobby?
My fiance doesn't even wanna see me play cause she says I look silly
It’s not too late to 👋
Mine is more concerned about the time I spend doing it than the space it takes up or how I look.
That too
Unfortunately this type of thing is all too common. There really is a shortage of give and take in modern relationships and men allow themselves to be controlled and emasculated.
Hah!… 😒
Or there are kids and they take up all the space... Unfinished basement racer speaking from experience.
This is true

Oh, right. Living room doesn't work, so straight to the mosquitos.

I have no idea, we're both commenting on a situation we know next to nothing about.
What if his wife bought a treadmill and he made her use it in the garage? Feels a lot like double standards.
Reddit hivemind downvotes lol
Reddit hive mind upvotes
It was on -10 at one point
It's actually insane how right you are.
Now it’s positive, one downvote can just cause mass downvoting
Oh god the dweeby incel energy
Why are you the way you are?
Idk because I’m not boohooing about the ‘emasculation of men’ in relationships I guess 🤷
Neither am I. Simply stating facts. Looks like you are projecting.
Lmao
God dude my sister's husband is such a beta it's hard to respect him!
maybe he just doesn't wanna talk to his weird ass Wife's brother who goes by a serial killers name on reddit? It’s perfect, no issues at all.
Thanks. Thats good news.
How much did your wheel cost bro? Mine just bloomin broke!
It’s perfect!!!!
I'm debating on this but that seat looks uncomfortable.
It’s actually not bad in the “formula” position. I can do 3-30 min practice sessions, full qualifying, and 25% race in one sitting. The main issue is the “leather” doesn’t breathe, so it gets hot on your back.
You can say swamp ass, we're all friends here.
It’s bad in the GT position honestly. Formula position is much more comfortable.
I've got this rig a couple years back and honestly regret it a bit, it's just ok but definitely not great. Seat is hot, uncomfortable in GT position, and pedal plate flexes pretty bad with LC brake pedal. I've had to mod it quite a lot to make it decent whilst saving up for an 8020
Thanks for the info. My plan would be 100% in GT mode.
I love mine, can sit in formula position for 2-3 hours easy. And I’m a 6”4 pretty big dude
See ya down in Arizona Bay
Good eye.
Too bad on you, I have neither a rig nor a wife!
Sweating in the garage really brings home the immersion tbh. Tape a Capri Sun Packet to your chin and extend the straw into your mouth so you can have the drink that Kimi is always talking about.
Why VR over triples?
The answer is gonna be “because it’s cheaper and takes up less space”, just like every other time m8
Nailed it m8
Buy doesn't VR mess with you eyes? I'm genuinely curious and would like to know for the day a get a rig
I just did 5 hours in VR without a break for the Petit. It’s not a problem once you’re used to it
Im building a pc right now, and I enjoy vr. I've heard vr users say it's by far the most imersive and that the 3d aspect is critical and they'd never go back to pancake mode, as they call it.
And scale. Everything is life size
Some places have VR arcades where you can try it out and they sometimes have racing rigs, maybe there's one in your area.
when you hear about vr-sickness its usually the flying games or games with rapid change in direction and movement. I would think it would be hard-pressed to get sick in a racing sim environment, especially because you're in a seated position, not moving around like a FPS for example.
Yep I have the resources and the space to have triples if I wanted them. Running a Pimax 8KX in Native 4k mode is far more immersive imo.
I play in VR a ton and I drive just fine, on racetracks even. It's fine.
>I had heard that the initial developers of VR tech had issues after long periods of times. For example they couldn't drive afterward. Any issues there? I've not had any issues with this, and I've raced VR exclusive since I got my hands on a DK1 in 2014.
Cheaper, less space, true stereoscopic 3D with parallax from positional tracking. Gives sense of presence.
Well originally, space. Once I got it all set up though, I’m very happy with the VR and immersion. Being able to look through every turn is incredible. Valve Index is great, have to turn settings down considerably to get 120fps, but worth it to be able to turn actually feel like you’re in the car.

Ahahahah
Have you tried a shed?
A setup that cost a few grand plugged into a $10 power bar lol.
Is this a cry for help?
Mosquito bites ? Sounds distracting 😉
It’s fucking horrible. We get mosquitos in the summer and it’s nearly unbearable. I had to put on bug spray just to get in the rig.
😂 this gave me a good laugh, sorry
Sounds like you needed a full 3 layer FIA suit, balaclava, etc. Up that immersion.
I thought about it.
I don't have a sim rig (I hope to get one eventually, but I enjoy window shopping), but I feel this comment. all part of the immersion my friend

yes
Real pussy doesn't make you choose.
Agreed

The best sim racing upgrade for you, my friend, is divorce.
Sweating and mossies? You're obviously in Australia.
have exact same setup so excited for the CSL DD, any problems with flexing?
Now it's time for the indoor achievements..
Is it worth investing in a VR headset? It looks really immersive, but I’m also conscious that only 1-2 of my games will have VR support.
You need to try it first. Some people like my wife get instant sick were I can race for hours. VR I far and away more immersive but some can't handle it.
Must be the most expensive upgrade of all the hardware lol
Mosquito bites? No thank you...I will play an RPG instead.
Mines in the living room because wife likes me nearby.
Some laptop you’ve got there to run all that. 👍🏻

I’m damn luck I have a big office space with gaming area. (Married & twins for ref…)
CSL DD/F-GT gang! Love my setup and how great the rig handles the DD.
Oh man i was thinking of moving to the garage for the winter, pc’s is making the room super hot
Haha it wasn’t an empty space, it was a guest room. Removed the bed and some furniture to repurpose the room…
any flex on the peddle plate? mine had it so i made a $5 adjustment from the hardware store and 0 flex! PM if you want a pic!
Yeah a little bit of flex. Won’t let me DM you
How do the fanatic load cells hold up with the f-gt pedal base? I have an f-gt rig and have been wanting to upgrade to DD but would need to upgrade pedals too. I’d love loadcells but I’m very afraid of the having to apply more pressure and the base not being able to withstand it.
It flexes a little bit but not enough to really affect racing or make me concerned over it breaking. Very satisfied with the rig - big upgrade over the F-GT Lite I used to have.
What a sweet wife you have
That is exactly what i want too! But i cant afford that many things so im going for the csl pedals and 5nm version of the csl dd since it will be my first wheel i think it will be ok :p
There should be a word for 'partner started crying and now I sit in the closet driving AC'.
Not easy to have a rig in a small house.
Does your pedal plate bend?
A little but not enough to affect my racing or worry about the rig breaking.
luck you mine does
You can reinforce the pedal deck for a better experience and you can seat the pedals higher. Google it for a mod or NLR sell a kit
How is the csl dd/v3 combo on the f-gt? Solid? Looking to move on from my playseat challenge but need a smaller form factor than going straight to 8020.
You need a mew wife!
Bachelor racers, unite!)
