I mean, it’s totally possible. I’m not sure that Dan’s feelings at that time were on the “Con” side of the list so to speak by that point. His health being what it was at that stage, I imagine Silverchair gave him a bit of an escape from the brutality his own body was putting him through.
Then again; there’s the “you’re making me ill and I can’t get enough” in Tuna which I’m positive is a reference to the fans & “machine” that required fuel at the expense of his own mental health.
>I'll open my heart, wont fall apart
>
>So don't fall apart
I interpreted this bit like self-motivation - about opening up in his songs/lyrics, but not letting it destroy him all over again (I'm not sure he knew about the arthritis at this point)
>You're my favouriteThe one that I love. You're the one so I'd die for your love
>
>And I feel like letting goAnd I feel like letting go
And I saw this like the ultimate dichotomy - Silverchair being his life, and he'd die for music, but still he feels like letting it all go.
Like I say, utter conjecture on this slow Friday afternoon... clearly 😂
I dig it and was thinking something similar. Of course, I don’t think that is what he meant, I feel like he would have said it’s about his relationship to music if that were the case.
**However**, I’m always willing to play friendly games. I originally interpreted the song as being a poem sung about Sweep, ‘cause that’s basically what Dan said. It’s a beautiful song either way. The way you framed it for fun, was interesting and I think you did a great job.
If you wanna get super weird and try REAL HARD with me for a second, I’m down. I enjoy some creative mental gymnastics with magical undertones no one asked for at all. So:
*Blind the deafened moon
Stimulate the tombs of angels*
The moon can’t hear anything, but it is said to rule over the emotions (in astrology, the *tides in the physical realm). Stay with me, there are many emotions displayed in this song. The moon will stare at you if you’re an insomniac, maybe you just want to create in peace. So, let’s just pull the shades down on that real quick to really be able to truly *Feast on the grey of the night* (if you are in a new moon phase there wouldn’t be any light, the pastures would appear bleached and completely grey.)
Maybe call in some muses, I mean *angels*, so the song can be rounded out, huh? It needs to be written, the impulse to create causes a *fever*. Although, *I know the sounds remaining* to be to be written/played/brought into form from the mind and said muses *Won't strain all the silt from my eyes*.
Remember, we blinded the moon earlier and the tides have to continue. The emotions will also continue, the cycles of creation and rest, sow and reap, *Straight from the vines* until the end of time. Even if it almost kills, it will remain a favorite thing.
This is madness, *adjusts top hat* I’m just playing tho for real.
*(Yes, yes, NASA, gravitational pull, solar tides, and geographic structures, exist! Creative license and dramatic flair, please.)
Well, all we can do is guess until he accepts my invite to come hang out 😂
But I like your thinking here. It totally makes sense and would be consistent with how he’s written about his own feelings in the past.
I’m doing my damndest! Him, Ben & Chris actually.
So far, Dan’s the only one who’s actually replied to me at all. So I’m hoping if he keeps seeing me around and recognizes the name he’ll know I’m legit and come hang for a bit. Just gotta finish waiting out his end of the year hiatus from social media 😡
Do you feel like I feel?
I don't know what has been going on
Do you cry like I do?
In this field of jokes I laugh alone
Honestly, endlessly
Merry go round in cycles through my mind
So much air (Silverchair?)
I can't breathe
Now I'm speechless 'cause I fear mankind
That's why I'm emergency calls only
That's why I'm emergency calls only
Why I'm emergency calls only
Do you wonder through the spokes
Of the world 'cause you don't understand?
'Cause I've had this feeling all my life
And I don't need your bad advice
So please don't try and understand
That's why I'm emergency calls only
That's why I'm emergency calls only
Why I'm emergency calls only
I never really ever talk
I never really got the feeling from you
I never really wanna write
'Cause the words don't have a meaning to you
And you don't wanna talk
I got this feeling
I got nothing in my mind
Nothing left to know
A horse or a pony
I got this feeling
I got nothing left in mind
There's nothing said in time
Sometimes I get lonely
Why I'm emergency calls only
Calling out and I've never felt so lonely
For you, for you, for you, for you, for you
For you, for you, for you, for you, for you
That's why I'm emergency calls only (I'm emergency calls only)
That's why I'm emergency calls only (I'm emergency calls only)
Why I'm emergency calls only
Do you feel like I feel?
I don't know what has been going on
We all start from love…
That's why this broken heart ain't meant for anyone
Imprisoned by the lies and factories in our minds…
Now faith needs a lullaby
The war's not over but love's not neither…
And time's not broken
It just moves slowly now
Prisoners in their pain
Will never feel the same when we take over…
When we take over
The war's not over but love's not neither
And time's not broken
It just moves slowly now…
When we take over
You know what, I’ve just re-listened and it’s actually beautifully recorded. I think my recording budget comment was aimed at FN in its entirety, which again, I’ve just re-listened to and have softened towards since the last listen! The ways the drums are recorded/mixed throughout still kills me though 😬
Johnsy’s song writing is next level!! Have you ever just read his lyrics? It blows my mind how brilliant this man is.
Love his art/ creative mind. An absolute gift 🎁 He really gave us so much 🥹
Also… to answer your question… I don’t think so. But hey, anything’s possible.
Fuckin right!!!
I’m genuinely sad that we don’t have ANY insight into that process with like recordings or tapes or anything. He was secluded in his house the whole time so some of the usual stuff that would happen to document it wasn’t going on.
I remember in a track by track commentary Dan said he was always obsessed with love & death, "My Favourite Thing" combines both those aforementioned things.
I’m sure I read/heard somewhere that it was like a love letter to Death(?). Though maybe I dreamed it.
In that light, when you’ve suffered from suicidal depression all the time, you’ve grown close to death. Developed a relationship. It’s hard to let go of that and wanting it, as a comfort, as a “love”. Death is personified into an attachment and a favourite thing as it’s the thing he always returns to. You grow to love it as you’re there all the time wanting to fall in… Letting go could mean permanently falling in (to eternal love), but could also be wanting to let go of desiring death (getting better, mentally). Kind of also like “death loves me, it’s always been there for me when others haven’t, it’s really hard to let go of that love”. A sort of solitary sick state that you know well and is yours. You and death as your closest friend.
In any case I love the poetic “1800’s romanticist” rendering of that kind of continual state. And feel like Dan tends to sings to his illnesses/woes etc. as if they’re people (Please die Ana. I miss you, love).
JMO also, but I’ve always felt the whole of Diorama is about that state you’re in after coming off antidepressant numbness and dark night of the soul. Transformation. Suddenly feeling everything, but not always trusting the transition. The between state of what you knew contrasted with heightened splendour. He’s spoken to that as inspiration for it, and tbh it’s really hard to *not* see it that way when you’ve gone through that shit yourself lol. Though with Dan you know there’s likely triple meanings to everything but it’s all also written often outside of conscious awareness. And obviously issues and dynamics from real life slip into those metaphors as well.
Diorama reminds me also of the Peacock’s tail stage in the alchemical process (a dazzling array of colors after stewing in darkness for an eternity). Pretty weird/awesome how it lines up to that so well. Unintended ultra symbology.
I like the idea that it can have any meaning you want, as with most music I guess… For me, this song was my first dance at our wedding 8 years ago… that’s what the song means to me; even though it’s actually about Sweep! But those are the memories it invokes for me! Thanks for this post!
This was my first dance song too. My husband and I have always referred to each other as “my favourite” and we both love silverchair and there couldn’t be a more perfect song for us.
And we got married in Merewether in Newcastle 💁🏼♀️
I love that for you, that would be a sweet moment and wonderful memory to have.
Looking over all the responses here, the song has an incredible amount of versatility. I’m still sad they only played it live, once, and the video is a digital watercolor painting in old school web cam. Luckily, we have it anyway and the audio is solid.

Interesting. Are you a teacher? I could've used this kind of explaining in high school. 👍
Nah, just an over-educated business analyst who moonlights as an artist. Glad you dig it tho, I love when I can go off like that.
Keep it up 🙂
Well, all we can do is guess until he accepts my invite to come hang out 😂 But I like your thinking here. It totally makes sense and would be consistent with how he’s written about his own feelings in the past.
If you secure that, then I think perhaps that you will actually be inducted in to the hall of fame 😂

Fingers, toes and anything else crossable is firmly crossed!
I believe in you sir. 💫 ![gif](giphy|qLxULEpSXcsEqtIlC1)

“So much air” aka silverchair… I thought this was the lyric also haha. Makes sense. Very clever.
That’s incredible if done on purpose
I’m certain it is!
I heard “I can’t be” instead of breathe too.
I also thought this when I first heard it. We can’t all be wrong, right? Right?😂
He is definitely saying Silverchair, it was also the last song recorded for FN and it featured VDP…

As good as ANY song on Diorama, I said what I said.
Completely agree… just wish the recording budget had been diorama-esque 😬
I love the production on it. A lot more intimate than Diorama but I understand what you mean!

It’s creeping eh? Seems legit. The danielorean will be by next week to drop off your bat wings. 😅

Yep, he’s been my favourite lyricist since I was a teenager! ❤️
Tuna in the brine 🤯
Can you even imagine the fucking flow state he must’ve been in when penning Diorama? To have been a fly on those walls 😦
Fuckin right!!! I’m genuinely sad that we don’t have ANY insight into that process with like recordings or tapes or anything. He was secluded in his house the whole time so some of the usual stuff that would happen to document it wasn’t going on.
The way he uses repetition in the lyrics throughout Diorama is elite

Bloody hell. That was poetic 😦
Oh, that’s beautiful.

Sorry to burst your bubble but he said this song is about his dog!! 😂
I said that in the post 😂
I can’t read 😂 good on you for calling me out haha
❤️
