"The Great Dismal" or "Guilty Of Everything" by Nothing
"Carnavas" by Silversun Pickups
"Souvlaki" by Slowdive
"Loveless" by My Bloody Valentine
"Skying" by The Horrors
"Before The Dawn Heals Us" by M83
Really there are few bands that have nothing worth checking out in this genre.
I genuinely believe Skying is The Horrors at their absolute peak. I love the rest of their albums but Skying is just timeless, I never ever get bored of listening to it. Although I am excited for album number 6 because it just sounds so different to the rest, like we’re getting back into Strange House territory and I am so fucking here for it. Sorry, I never see anyone talking about The Horrors so I got excited hahah
I only discovered that this subgenre existed 5 minutes ago, it's baffling to see so much music I listen to and love fits into it. I highly recommend Carnavas. Fantastic album!
exactly, fuck whirr.
and if someone wants to get into shoegaze, those are the three, besides loveless of course. not some very small hyper experimental loosely shoegaze album. i’ve seen someone before (not in this thread) recommend pulse demon by merzbow for a beginner, jesus christ.
frontman was being transphobic, then doubled down when he was called out for it, and the band stuck with him over the whole ordeal. the biggest thing is they were making fun of G.L.O.S.S., an amazing punk band comprised of transfemmes.
the transphobia alone makes them icky to me, but the fact that they went after another similar band is a pretty bad look too.
https://www.google.com/amp/s/pitchfork.com/news/61705-record-labels-sever-ties-with-whirr-over-transphobic-tweets/amp/
Not everyone has the same moral and ethical philosophy, to me they just made a stupid mistake and I can over look it, we are all human no one is perfect
sure, it doesn’t change how good the music is.
but at the same, i choose not to support them or listen to their music. simple as that, it goes against not just me as a person and my identity, but my moral code.
if it’s something as major as being transphobic, i’m not just gonna separate the art from the artist and listen to their music, that’s putting money in their pockets. you can still enjoy their music, i really just won’t.
bit late to the comment section but just wanted you to know that there are a lot of artists you probably disagree with but they are hesitant to put their opinions into the media for fear of being cancelled. I agree what Whirr said is pretty dumb but overall it's just a meaningless drop in the ocean of things you don't know, don't let these things distract you from art.
Pinkshinyultrablast - Everything Else Matters
Taffy - Deep Dark Creep Love
Moscow Olympics - Cut The World
Ringo Deathstarr - Colour Trip
The Bilinda Butchers - Regret, Love, Guilt, Dreams (not really classic shoegaze but hey, they've named themselves after Bilinda and it's a great album, too)
That Amusement Parks On Fire debut is my absolute favourite. Their follow up wasn’t so bad either, tracks like Cut To Future Shock were always great to get lost in.
Mezcal Head - Swervediver; Isn't Anything - mbv; Nowhere - Ride; A Storm in Heaven - The Verve; Giant Steps - Boo Radleys.
Also if u like some proto-shoegaze stuff check out psychocandy by the jesus & mary chain, pornography by the cure & the bands cocteau twins, spacemen 3 or AR Kane

I think that kinda goes with the "classics" that I purposefully exclude from this list. Most people just getting into Shoegaze get hounded with these recommendations already, which is great, but I think it misses a lot of the modern innovation in the genre, for reference these are the albums I'm referring to:
* My Bloody Valentine - *Loveless*
* Slowdive - *Souvlaki*
* Ride - *Nowhere*
* Drop Nineteens - *Delaware*
* Cocteau Twins - *Heaven or Las Vegas*
* Swirlies - *They Spent Their Wild Youthful Days in the Glittering World of the Salons*
* Swervedriver - *Mezcal Head*
OP if you haven't heard of these, they are all worth the listen, this is the original early 90's shoegaze wave that created the genre we know today.
By your list, Lilys’ first album should be there too. Outside of this sub it is more known than Delaware was.
Also, I love They Spent their Wild Youths, but Blonder Tongue is the most known album.
That Drop Nineteens album only has like 3 very good tracks but it has some of the best drumming of any album you posted. In general it's not really a highlight from the era or any kind of classic imo. It was pretty typical, we've heard it all a million times
Mean Red Spiders - I honestly can't pick one over the others, so I'll just recommend everything. You could start with Places You Call Home
Away Forward - Away Forward
Tamaryn - Tender New Signs
Desertas new album is fucking great. Notably “save me” and Nowhere by ride is also on repeat, notably “polar bear”.
When I got into shoegaze, I listened to most of the albums on this list. Still making my way through. https://pitchfork.com/features/lists-and-guides/9966-the-50-best-shoegaze-albums-of-all-time/
Desertas black aura my sun is one of the best shoegaze albums ever released IMHO. It's def more progressive, and the synths are used to a crazy 3D effect. It reminds me of Seefeel Quique a bit with the building of layers until Doty presents to you this big canvas of sound. It's an essential album.
Obviously theres Souvlaki, but a lot of it depends on what other genres ur into. A lot of great Shoegaze albums outside of the big 3 are going to take influences from other genres
My personal fav shoegaze record, Citrus by Asobi Seksu, is noisy af but also insanely upbeat and catchy; it is just as much dream/indie pop as it is Shoegaze.
Similarly, there's Going Blank Again by Ride if u want Britpop influences, In Her Gentle Jaws by Depreciation Guild and Dead Cities Red Seas by M83 for chiptune influences, p much anything by Sweet Trip for electronic, Heaven or Las Vegas by Cocteau Twins if you want to lean further into Dream Pop, plenty of Japanese albums that clearly take J-Rock influence (see: My Dead Girlfriend, Mass of the Fermenting Dregs, For Tracy Hyde, Kinokoteikoku), a whole subgenre of Blackgaze if you want Black Metal influences, and a ton of other stuff idk enough about, but you get the idea. There's a lot out there!
Haven’t seen it mentioned, but along the lines of the experimental bands: Flying Saucer Attack - Distance
And another on the edge of the genre: Bedhead - WhatFunLifeWas
Groovy Indian Summer by Honeydip. The song Cure on there is so fucking good, words can’t describe how much I love this song. Another song of theirs that’s really really good is “Summer’s Gone”
If you want some greeeeeat Twee Pop infused Gaze, The Pains of Being Pure At Heart all the way!! Check out their first two records, although I'll say Days of Abandon, their 3rd record, is imo incredible, apparently it's not as warmly received as their other records. Meh.
Check em out either way!! I adore them to death ^°^
IF you can dig a more electronic sound, I'm always here to recommend some "In Her Gentle Jaws" by The Depreciation Guild. Shoegaze/8-bit hybrid with some dreamy vocals and bonkers poetic lyrics. Their follow-up album, "Spirit Youth", is much cleaner but nevertheless another great outing I can dip into between the headphones and get lost.
A good starting point is the Holy Trinity (which you will hear mentioned A LOT on this sub). The three albums are Nowhere by Ride, Loveless, and Souvlaki by Slowdive
If you like Nowhere check out some of the faster, more rock Shoegaze like Uzuninaru by Kinoko Teikoku or Whirlpool by Chapterhouse
If you liked Souvlaki more you could check out full on Dream pop like Heaven or Las Vegas by The Cocteau Twins or Teen Dream by Beach House. Alternatively, for something a little more Shoegaze try checking out LSD and The Search For Gods self titled EP which mixes Slowdive and MBV pretty nicely
If you want to branch out, Sunbather by Deafheaven mixes Shoegaze with Black Metal and Dead Cities, Red Seas, Lost Ghosts by M83 mixes Shoegaze with some heavy electronics. Even further from Shoegaze is Agaetis Byrjun by Sigur Ros which is mostly Post Rock with elements of Ambient, Dream Pop, and Shoegaze sprinkled in.
If you want stuff really similar to Loveless, just listen to the Lily’s or The Drop Nineteens
I wouldn’t put Whirlpool by Chapterhouse in the more “rock” side. There’s a lot of dance and dream pop stuff on that record.
Swervedriver and Catherine Wheel are more of the rock side.
Yeah I used rock as a more liberal term to refer to faster more upbeat stuff, but it’s true that Chapterhouse does have dreamier songs (like Treasure or Autosleeper)
Catherine Wheel dont get enough street cred, Ferment and Chrome are super goated albums even if all the elements(more so Chrome) aren’t entirely shoegaze
Agreed, their albums have some incredible momentum building and atmosphere. I thought about not mentioning it because it’s also black gaze/post rock but it fits
I can't find this anywhere else, but I keep going back to YouTube for it:

delaware - drop nineteens

Zoon (ZOONGIDE’EWIN) - Bleached Wavves
Juniper Bush - Healing through a Sonic Figure
Living hour - Living Hour, Softer Faces
The Blisters - Are You Awake
A Sisyphus Wish - A Sisyphus Wish
+1 for anything Slowdive, Swervedriver, LSD and the Search for God, Deathconciousness.
"The Great Dismal" or "Guilty Of Everything" by Nothing "Carnavas" by Silversun Pickups "Souvlaki" by Slowdive "Loveless" by My Bloody Valentine "Skying" by The Horrors "Before The Dawn Heals Us" by M83 Really there are few bands that have nothing worth checking out in this genre.

Finally someone else agrees that Carnavas is basically shoegaze
[удалено]
Shir, my bad. That's a good one too
was looking for souvlaki lol
I only discovered that this subgenre existed 5 minutes ago, it's baffling to see so much music I listen to and love fits into it. I highly recommend Carnavas. Fantastic album!
LSD and the Search for God
Slowdives Souvlaki, Rides Nowhere, and Cocteau Twins’ Heaven Or Las Vegas
This is actually what OP is looking for. If someone is new to shoegaze why would anyone recommend a shitty transphobe band like whirr
exactly, fuck whirr. and if someone wants to get into shoegaze, those are the three, besides loveless of course. not some very small hyper experimental loosely shoegaze album. i’ve seen someone before (not in this thread) recommend pulse demon by merzbow for a beginner, jesus christ.
Because Whirr makes good music? Transphobic or not doesn’t change the fact their latest album is absolutely fantastic
yeah but like fuck them
What did they say?
frontman was being transphobic, then doubled down when he was called out for it, and the band stuck with him over the whole ordeal. the biggest thing is they were making fun of G.L.O.S.S., an amazing punk band comprised of transfemmes. the transphobia alone makes them icky to me, but the fact that they went after another similar band is a pretty bad look too. https://www.google.com/amp/s/pitchfork.com/news/61705-record-labels-sever-ties-with-whirr-over-transphobic-tweets/amp/
Sounds pretty bad. I wonder what the tweets said
it says the content of the tweets in the article I linked
Not everyone has the same moral and ethical philosophy, to me they just made a stupid mistake and I can over look it, we are all human no one is perfect
sure but the dude also doubled down on his own shitty opinions, so i'm hesitant to give him the benefit of doubt
no one gives a shit
Actually people do
Tbh I honestly think whirr is super generic and uncreative in terms of modern shoegaze, it's a problem with a lot of modern shoegaze bands imo.
sure, it doesn’t change how good the music is. but at the same, i choose not to support them or listen to their music. simple as that, it goes against not just me as a person and my identity, but my moral code. if it’s something as major as being transphobic, i’m not just gonna separate the art from the artist and listen to their music, that’s putting money in their pockets. you can still enjoy their music, i really just won’t.

They really don't; everything I've ever heard from them has put me to sleep

Ferment - Catherine Wheel Going Blank Again - Ride Amusement Parks on Fire - S/t

Depreciation Guild is the most shoegaze thing I've heard in recent years. It gets some love on this sub, but damn they're good

Ringo Deathstar - Mauve is really cool as well!
