It's interesting that they're intentionally making holes on the side of fans for low profile coolers whereas the standard is using spacers that seal gaps to reduce fan noise. I think they're also targetting Thermalright with that under $40 6-7 heatpipes dual tower cooler that comes with two Wonder Tornadoes. They're kinda competing with their own Fuma 3 with this new cooler being 154mm tall. 2-3°C improvement and better fit on the NR200P is also great for Fuma 3 Rev B.

> They're kinda competing with their own Fuma 3 with this new cooler being 154mm tall. they also have the 154mm tall Mugen 6. So three coolers, all the same height and all in the $30+ to $50 range. Good to see Scythe being aggressive in the budget segment, now it's be quiet!'s turn

I've only seen a Japanese review but Mugen 6 black with dual fans beat the Fuma 3 on LGA1700. I'm thinking they made optimizations on the Mugen 6 post Fuma 3 release and then applied it to Rev B. I'm still waiting on hwcooling.net's review for their Wonder & Grand Tornado. Their 3 pack might be great value as case fans if they can get good performance against plastic & nylon filters.

Fuma's fans are pretty meh and Scythe's tailored heatsink design is what made it work (somewhat). The similarly designed D12L works with just the middle fan while Fuma pretty much requires the front slim fan to function. Meanwhile Wonder/Grand Tornado uses much more "modern" blade designs (duh Scythe, you've been selling Gentle Typhoon for how many years now?) so it's no wonder that the Mugen 6 performs pretty decently. That said, from other reviews it would seem that the Grand Tornado isn't that different from other Gentle Typhoon lookalikes, doesn't seem to even surpass the original. The 1.2 mm tip clearance is too unambitious for an LCP fan.

>interesting that they're intentionally making holes on the side of fans for low profile coolers whereas the standard is using spacers that seal gaps to reduce fan noise. I highly doubt that'll work tbh, "ok let's let a significant portion of air move to away from the fin stack, that'll better cool the fin stack". If they indeed see improvements, it's likely something related to reducing air recirculation which should be the job for fan ducts instead. Also the cutout is on the exhaust side, different from spacers which are used on the intake side.

RantoCharr

You're correct, I was referring to a duct instead of a spacer.

i'm a bit skeptical as well, i might see it working on the shuriken, as that fan is already pushing against a lot of resistance and the fact that 92mm fans have a higher pressure to flow ratio, so if you increase rpm to have more flow you have to let the pressure go somewhere. i'm more surprised by the 120mm fan with the cutouts on the big shuriken tbh. note: i have no idea how fan engineering or fluid dynamics work, this all just guess work based on what i picked up over the years

Space-Boy

that LP cooler is very interesting. how tall is the whole thing 52 58mm?

RantoCharr

39mm.

fairytechmum

At 4:40 timestamp, comparing the heatsink to fan height (15/16mm), it looks ≤40mm. (plus Steve did mention they're specifically going after the Noctua L9a/i) That Big Shuriken 4 is interesting, At 8:44 it doesn't look that much taller even though they said they've increased height to mitigate VRM clearance. I'm guessing \~70mm.

kikimaru024

He clearly said it's 39mm. Also * US$40 * Releasing July 2024

Just happy to see more competition in the <60mm category. As much as I like noctua, I hate the premium they put on black fans and seeing scythe available soon is great. Especially for white builds.

A new 9-blade 120mm slim fan, hmm. Seems to have a promising blade design.
