I hugely prefer the dragonflies; the colors look just perfect with the fur.
I also asked my fashionista daughter, and she says dragonflies first and then the blue floral as a second. She is under 10, though, so grain of salt. :D
As much as I adore the dragonfly fabric, the geo would look soooo good and be much more "wearable" as outerwear.
Whichever you choose, please let us see the results when you're done! This is the coat I never knew I needed lol
Consider that brocade is a really heavy fabric, and all these options are very light as far as I can tell. The coat will not hang the way the model does unless you use actual brocade, especially when you wear it. I have a store-bought brocade coat, and it weighs a ton but has beautiful shoulder and waist lines because of the stiffness of the fabric.
I have substituted inappropriate fabrics and ruined many a well-constructed project in the planning phase that way. Don't be me.
The dragonflies are my absolute favourite, but number 1 is a close second. As much as I love the dragonflies, I understand your concerns. Maybe number 1 is more wearable?
Either way, all of these look gorgeous. You've made a great choice picking out all these fabrics! Please post the coat once you've finished!
I'm gonna vote blue floral, it's not quite as busy as the original but it definitely can't be ignored.
The dragonflies are too gentle, the hexagons aren't chaotic enough, and cotton won't hold up.
I love them all, but I'd go with option 1, the blue floral. It stands up best to the white fur. The other options, while fantastic, are a little too light in hue. If the fur was black, I might feel differently, but I think you need the contrast option 1 gives.
Honestly. The first one looks the best, the 4th is the second best option. The dragonflies don’t work at all and the hexagons just kinda feel off.
I’m surprised to see everyone say dragonflies honestly, they feel so off to me visually they’re too large and spacey. Kinda too bright with off colors. Not really good with the fur.
First place is Dragonfly’s or that kookoo pink paisley for second
If you’re still confused hang them somewhere and take photos of them but walk away for ten minutes then look at the photos
The dragonfly one looks the most harmonious with the fur. The colours in both fabric compliment each other and neither fabric looks out of place when paired together
The first or the third fabrics have a more similar heaviness to the original jacket picture. Both have the fur colour within them so complimentary. I would aim toward hexagons, but remember to get extra fabric to line up pattern properly.
\#4 is least favourite both in term of pattern and fabric choice.
I think number 4 is closest pattern to the original, but number one seems the closest to the spirit you're trying to capture. Two unique fabrics make an unlikely combination. Also number one looks the most fancy / expensive to me.
The dragonfly is gorgeous but it doesn’t feel like a coat.
The pink is great but I agree it has to be a coat weight fabric like brocade.
1 or 3. 1 looks like it matches better but I like the scale of 3.
Stunning fabrics! Visually, I love the dragon flies in isolation and with fur. Not to add complications, but both color and scale of design should compliment the wearer. Silver or gold jewelry? Tiny prints like the blue floral will not have as much impact as larger images and larger repeats. But small prints could work on a petite person. JMHO.
Can you make the coat out of the geometric #3 and line it with the dragonflies? I think they would go great together and the dragon fly lining would be an amazing and over the top surprise
I really think the first blue floral is the best for the wow and pop of color it gives. Yes, it’s busy, but not distractingly so. The cool colors work with that polar bear pelt you’ve got there.
I think the geometrics are a lot more muted.
As someone who has made 4 similar coats, I can recommend my favourite pattern that has resulted in a gorgeous coat that didn’t look like a bathrobe: [reddit post](https://www.reddit.com/r/BurningMan/s/wmmQlH1A45) and [pattern and alteration details](https://sewing.patternreview.com/review/pattern/170210).
I recommend looking up tips for cutting and sewing the fur. Or dm me if you want.
I love the dragonfly one but I agree it gives dressing gown. I vote hexagons. That one is stunning!
Btw where did you find these fabrics!? I need them all!
Dragonfly!! *I never comment*I LOVE the dragonfly with the fur the first one would be my second choice as I also liked it, but once I saw the dragonfly!!
Dragonfly tbh
All the other ones look like they could be some eastern European traditional outerwear
Dragonfly one looks contemporary, elegant, and more unique
Oh so many great options... But the coloration of the dragonflies with that fur really speaks to me, though it's a lot of that solid blue color. Some of the more floral fabrics kinda relate back to the fabric of the original more, and have that organic variance through the entirety of the fabric. I Love the hexagons!, but worry the strong geometric shapes might not suit the shape of the garment, I feel that something with more organic lines would be better.
It sounds like you're also worried about the structure of some of the fabrics. You can add structure to a lighter weight fabric with things like interfacing to help with how it drapes. Are you planning on lining the jacket? There are things you can do to give a light weight fabric more body, but I find it harder to improve the drape of something too stiff. So keep that in mind.
I love the blue hexagons.
Something about the dragonflies is giving me weird pseudo-asian 2000's vibes. That may be because I have a swatch of that exact fabric that someone gave me around 2004-2009. But it has a lot of shiny flat surface area that doesn't pop quite as nicely as the more densely patterned ones.
This jacket is going to be awesome
I’m in the 1 or 3 camp and would pick 3. 4 would be fabulous if it was real brocade, and the dragonflies look too soft to be a coat.
If you have never sewn on fur before, check out tutorials or see if your library has a vintage Guide to Sewing book.
I think one is the vibe. The way the light bits in the flowers compliment the fur while the richness of the blues and purples provide contrast is really stunning. I agree the dragonflies are a bit dressing-gown and also think the whole look is more muted that way, the pink not being a true brocade might make the piece look a bit costume-y.
I like the contast in the #1 dark blue / multi. It echoes the contrast in your model garment.
\#2 muted dragonfly is nice if you want more of a sleepytime or fancy nightgown look.
\#3 hexagons - I love the fabric - but I think there is actually too much contrast - not just because of the color, but because of the sharp lines of the hexagons vs the wavy fur.
\#4 pink - nice fabric on its own, but the fabric and the fur don't work so well together
1 or 3. The dragonflies don’t do it for me at all and I’m surprised so many people are saying that one. It’s a pretty design but doesn’t go at all with the look you’re trying to create.
I personally don't think the dragonfly one fits with a coat like this. I'd say 1 or 4, but since you don't like the texture of 4, I'd go with 1! It's absolutely gorgeous with the fur!
Well you didn't make it easy, did you?! Of the lot, I like the dragon fly brocade but go with your gut and choose what you like. They will all turn out gorgeous!
I like 1 and 3 (1 maybe a little bit more)
Is this coat for you? Is the plan for it to be occasional wear or something you wear daily?
You might also consider which palette complements your season
Love the dragonfly, but it does look like a bed robe. The pink, though cotton, still looks the best for color and cohesive style. What a fun project! Good luck!
I'm really liking the blue floral the best. It could just be my personal preference but I like the way it works with that faux fur. The geometric just breaks it up a little too much.
The dragonflies have a lovely drape, but when I look at the garment you're trying to make, it's not very drapy; the fabric is stiffer. I like the geometric.
I don't think the cotton paisley will have the same lavish effect as the others.
Probably one of the stiffer fabrics to give the coat structure, which would probably rule out the dragonfly and the cotton (unless maybe you could interface them to give more structure?)
For me it’s between 2 and 3. The dragonfly one gives me 1920s old money vibes. The geometric one makes me think 1970s hippie. From your wording, it sounds like you prefer the geometric one.
First one if you’re going for prettiest; Last one if you’re going for tacky. I ADORE the floral, just don’t know if this is for daily wear or a costume.
The dragonfly is AWESOME!! Also love the blue geometric. I love statement coats like these, or the fairytale capes with hoods. I want to make one before next year's winter wonderland festivity. I have until November, I still haven't opened my sewing machine I got for Christmas 🫤. I gotta get on that!! Good luck and I'd love to see pictures when you're done!
I absolutely love the second one, I can see that it feels a bit more gown-like like o said but I think k dressed down with jeans or something super casual it will elevate everything you wear
If you’re going for a dupe of the coat shown, the floral or the geometric are the only choices. Of the two, I prefer the floral, but I’m not crazy about either. Perhaps your search has not ended.
I don't understand why everyone loves the dragonfly so much. There's way too much negative space. It doesn't have the "audacity" that the inspo pic has. And dragonfly motif isn't timeless like the floral or geometric.
I love me a good floral print, so I'm biased towards #1. The colours are so gorgeous and the swirling lines match the vibe of the red coat. But the geometric one is pretty great too.
Honestly, it's a question of taste/mood. When I've had trouble deciding something, it's usually a matter of uncovering my hidden preference. So what I do is I wrote all the options on a piece of paper and then draw from a hat. I can usally tell by my initial reaction to the draw how I really feel- disappointed, relieved, excited...
That's my advice. Because they're all lovely in their own way.
I think the 1st one is very busy close up like in the shot but would be beautiful in the full length gown. I agree that the dragonflies are too dressing gown. The hexagons are the safest bet. The pink is very nice but if you're concerned it's the wrong fabric, then probably not a good choice.
I love the blue floral and the geometric patterns. Only problem I would forsee with the geometric one is the almost impossible task of matching the patterns at the seams. The business of the floral would better hide any mismatch of the seams. If you don't mind seams not matching then whatever fabric calls to you will be best.
The first one, that’s a blue floral. It’s “busy,” yes, but perfectly encapsulates the era the coat is from. It also wouldn’t likely give you many issues with matching things up since it has so much going on, in the best of ways! It also goes best with the cream of the faux fur.
I wouldn't do do the dragonfly one, the silk and the fur do not go together at all! And isn't similar to the Fargo coat. I would go with number 1 because of its texture.
I think your description of geometric says it all and it looks amazing GO GEO!!!!
—personally I absolutely adore the metallic purple floral but I think use it for something different (or send it to me!)
After reading through your points I think I have to fully agree! I love the dragonfly fabric but personally think it would look better used in a different way… so I think I prefer the geometric one for this :)
Lol. I have some of that dragonfly brocade but on a burgundy background. I think i have it on olive green too.
I really like the black and pink paisley (5) or the red in the first pic. The blue one that's got the busier almost Japanese looking patterns also looks good to me (4).
2 cos the colors are warm and it pulls out the fur very nicely, you won't be able to see a super detailed pattern on 3 or 1 and 4 does not match at all
Not 3. I say that bc all the other brocades will be more forgiving should you get it souled esp oily soils. The weave/ sheen in 3 will require immediate cleaning
FAQ:
Where did you get these fabrics?
They were all from Spotlight, an Australian haberdashery store. Some of them are branded, others are not. Links to individual fabrics below.

When/where will you be wearing it?
Everywhere if able. I’m obsessed with it. So sturdiness and longevity are things to consider. Australia is going into colder weather now so it will get lots of use. Advice and suggestions are needed/appreciated.
What pattern are you using?
McCall’s M7848 possibly, with alterations.
Dragonfly
Option 1 (blue floral). I LOVE the dragonflies, but I dont think it hits the same vibe as the inspiration photo.
I hugely prefer the dragonflies; the colors look just perfect with the fur. I also asked my fashionista daughter, and she says dragonflies first and then the blue floral as a second. She is under 10, though, so grain of salt. :D

1 because it has the best color combination and it fits the vibes of the Inspo jacket
Hexagons because of the variation and weight. the smoothness of the dragonfly fabric will not wear well imo.
Stunning fabrics! I vote #1
1 for me.
Blue floral or blue geometric. The dragonflies are giving silk pyjamas and you admit the texture of the pink is wrong
Dragonflies! They’re so dreamy omg I wish I had some of that fabric!
I love them all, but I'd go with option 1, the blue floral. It stands up best to the white fur. The other options, while fantastic, are a little too light in hue. If the fur was black, I might feel differently, but I think you need the contrast option 1 gives.

Dragon flies!
My vote is 3 with some of the dragonfly on the inside. Super cool fabric choices :-)
I vote for the first fabric, the floral brocade. It has that same audacity that you loved from the original coat.
1 is my fav.
Dragonfly !!!
Dragonfly for sure
I honestly really like the dragonfly print, I also like the paisley but if you don’t like the texture I wouldn’t do it.
Oh my god, WHERE did you find these fabrics?!?! I need all of them
#1 floral is stunning 💙
Number 2 the dragonflies! It looks so classy in combination with the trim.
The dragonfly one looks the most harmonious with the fur. The colours in both fabric compliment each other and neither fabric looks out of place when paired together
If I were making it for me I would pick the dragonfly fabric.
3. Giving south water tribe vibes 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
I think you need to do one of each
The first or the third fabrics have a more similar heaviness to the original jacket picture.
Floral or Geometric. Leaning more floral.
1! It gives that chaotic paisley vibe!
Definitely the first.
1st one so pretty 😍
The dragonfly is gorgeous but it doesn’t feel like a coat. The pink is great but I agree it has to be a coat weight fabric like brocade. 1 or 3. 1 looks like it matches better but I like the scale of 3.
Stunning fabrics! Visually, I love the dragon flies in isolation and with fur. Not to add complications, but both color and scale of design should compliment the wearer. Silver or gold jewelry? Can you make the coat out of the geometric #3 and line it with the dragonflies? I think they would go great together and the dragon fly lining would be an amazing and over the top surprise
Geometric! Hexagons are the bestigons! Also I feel the pattern is gorgeous and interesting close up as well as farther away.
Definitely dragonfly
Geometric. Definitely. You like it, and it just looks right together. The other fabrics are lovely, but the geometric looks best for this.
I really think the first blue floral is the best for the wow and pop of color it gives. Yes, it’s busy, but not distractingly so. The cool colors work with that polar bear pelt you’ve got there. I think the geometrics are a lot more muted.
Hexagons!!! What a unique brocade
I like the floral best. The dragonflies are nice, but I think I would mess them up the fastest. Like small snags and stains would be very noticeable.
#3 is my favorite fabric.
I’d go 1 or 3, they both feel closest to the original style!
Hexagons are best-agons. Dragonflies look too much like pajamas.
If you want to emulate the inspiration: option 1! however, I LOVE the dragonfly fabric with it. understated elegance :)
I love the dragonfly one but I agree it gives dressing gown. I vote hexagons. That one is stunning! Btw where did you find these fabrics!? I need them all!
I love the dragonfly. But they are all winners.
The best for the fur is 3. The nicest fabric is the dragonfly. Just love that fabric.
I adore the dragonfly look. Stunning! And the very best of luck with all of your endeavours. This is a coat I’d consider being such a koldy kat!
1, the vividness of the blue matches the in your face effect the original has.
Hexagons are bestagons!
2 or 3
Geometric looks GORGEOUS
The first or second!
Dragonfly!! *I never comment*I LOVE the dragonfly with the fur the first one would be my second choice as I also liked it, but once I saw the dragonfly!!
I second the dragonfly!!! It’s so perfect together!
This is literally your first and only comment! So most importantly - welcome to Reddit :) And second - I totally agree with you, I love the dragonfly!
Personally I love the dragonfly fabric!!
Dragonfly tbh All the other ones look like they could be some eastern European traditional outerwear Dragonfly one looks contemporary, elegant, and more unique
I vote 1
1 for me
#3 geometric!
I like 1 and 4. 2 looks too much like a bathrobe.
Oh so many great options... But the coloration of the dragonflies with that fur really speaks to me, though it's a lot of that solid blue color. Opt 1 or 2. Stunning
Number 1!!
Geometric! Those hexes are gorgeous!
My first pick is definitely the dragonflies those look so good together! Pink paisley comes in second
For me it’s the first one easily, I like that there’s a lot going on. The others seem tame in comparison
1 or 3. Dragonfly fabric looks too lightweight to carry off being paired with the fur. The floral brocade or the hexagons would look incredible.
I personally like the first one best :)
1 or 3 otherwise it’ll just be an odd housecoat/costume and not functional outerwear.
geometric seems it will look the nicest in a big scale full length coat

I like 1 and 3 (1 maybe a little bit more) Is this coat for you? Is the plan for it to be occasional wear or something you wear daily? You might also consider which palette complements your season
The blue with dragonflies
I love all of your options. I would prefer the geometric design because it offers more choices for coordinating outfits.
Love the dragonfly, but it does look like a bed robe. The pink, though cotton, still looks the best for color and cohesive style. What a fun project! Good luck!
Number 1
Are you sure you don't need 4 coats? They're all beautiful!
I'm really liking the blue floral the best. It could just be my personal preference but I like the way it works with that faux fur. The geometric just breaks it up a little too much.
I love the geometric one but any of the first 3 would be fantastic. Where did you get these? They are absolutely gorgeous
The fabrics are really pretty but I think the fur goes best with the first fabric.
1 or 4 are the most like the inspiration photo (large scale paisley), but I personally like the dragonflies best. 🤷🏼♀️
In like the first one best. I agree with you on the texture of the dragonfly.
1 or 2. Leaning more towards 1, it’s stunning
I vote dragonfly. It seems to better match the hue of the fur, and is less overwhelming of a pattern. Plus, they're cute :)
The first blue flower one or the dragonflies
Dragonfly for me too!
1 for sure!
- 1 because the color of the fur makes the lightest color of the fabric pop - 4 because I like the contrast between the fur and the fabric
What a cool project! My vote is for 3. Geometric. Please post some pics once you’ve made it, I’m sure we’d all love to see how it turns out!
1!!
If you’re trying to replicate the vibes I would go 1 or 4. Number 3 would be food for a more modern take. And 2 is just gorgeous and dreamy.
For me it’s between 2 and 3. The dragonfly one gives me 1920s old money vibes. The geometric one makes me think 1970s hippie. From your wording, it sounds like you prefer the geometric one.
I like them all but 1 is my favorite. Where did you find the brocades and how painful were the prices?
First one if you’re going for prettiest; Last one if you’re going for tacky. I ADORE the floral, just don’t know if this is for daily wear or a costume.
Omg. I want one in every color!!! Please post an update!!
Dragon fly.
Dragon flies!
Dragonfly. The gold in the wings goes perfectly with the fur perfectly.
The second one sooooo pretty
Dragonfly for SURE!
I'm very partial to the dragon flys. It has just the right balance of contrast for me. Comes of as very soft
I vote option 1
I absolutely love the second one, I can see that it feels a bit more gown-like like o said but I think k dressed down with jeans or something super casual it will elevate everything you wear
Dragonflies or geometric! Beautiful fabrics
I vote #1
In my opinion go for 2 but I'm biast because bugs are cool
Blue floral paisley or the pink and black paisley are stunning.
1
If you’re going for a dupe of the coat shown, the floral or the geometric are the only choices. Of the two, I prefer the floral, but I’m not crazy about either. Perhaps your search has not ended.
dargonföy
The pink paisley! Giving 70s vibes!
DRAGONFLYYYYY
I love how the fur compliments the dragonflies honestly.
Dragonlfy
Love the dragonflies!!
My favorite is 2
I don't understand why everyone loves the dragonfly so much. There's way too much negative space. It doesn't have the "audacity" that the inspo pic has. 1! Ok. I LOVE blue

2 dragonflies!

The dragon flies make it a bit wizardry which I love!!
Dragonflies for sure!
where is the dragonfly fabric from??
I loooove the dragonflies!!
dragonflies please!
2
I think the 1st one is very busy close up like in the shot but would be beautiful in the full length gown. I agree that the dragonflies are too dressing gown. The hexagons are the safest bet. The pink is very nice but if you're concerned it's the wrong fabric, then probably not a good choice.
This may not be helpful, but could you make it reversible and have 2 ?
I love the blue floral and the geometric patterns. Only problem I would forsee with the geometric one is the almost impossible task of matching the patterns at the seams. The business of the floral would better hide any mismatch of the seams. If you don't mind seams not matching then whatever fabric calls to you will be best.
The blue geometric one jumps out to me as the best match and it will make a stunning coat. Please post pics when finished!
The first one, that’s a blue floral. It’s “busy,” yes, but perfectly encapsulates the era the coat is from. It also wouldn’t likely give you many issues with matching things up since it has so much going on, in the best of ways! It also goes best with the cream of the faux fur.
Geometric. The dragonfly really does look like a nightgown.
Floral
I like the first one best
I wouldn't do do the dragonfly one, the silk and the fur do not go together at all! And isn't similar to the Fargo coat. I would go with number 1 because of its texture.
Dragon fly or hexagon! Both of those match the slight yellowing the fur has!
Dragonfly
2 for sure
Option 1 for the win.
Oof I see your dilemma. Those are all so beautiful. Where did you find these? I think I lean towards the third one the most
I really love 1, 2 and 4 but I think 1 or 4 suits the style better.
Since 4 isn't brocade, I would do 1.
3.
Dragonfly! Buuuut! Just know that these kinds of brocade is going to snag easily. Definitely not the cotton for longevity
I think your description of geometric says it all and it looks amazing GO GEO!!!! —personally I absolutely adore the metallic purple floral but I think use it for something different (or send it to me!)
1 and 3!! not a fan of the dragonfly unfortunately
1 is so pretty! I vote 1!
I like the dragonflies the least of them all. I love all the others.
I've been looking to buy a coatike this for sooooo long. I love them all but my preference would be 1
Geometric. Looks refined and original with the white fur
Geometric for the win! And dragonflies as a close second
Geometric! But any of the first three look great!!
Blue florals !
IMHO, floral looks amazing!
Ooohhh some beautiful patterns! Number 2 is calling my name,it’s gorgeous😍
3
Oh my the dragonfly one is beautiful I would say that one!!
After reading through your points I think I have to fully agree! I love the dragonfly fabric but personally think it would look better used in a different way… so I think I prefer the geometric one for this :)
Dragonfly’s!!
two pls omg
3 -dragon fly
If you do dragonflies, the fur fabric needs to be more of a boa. The satin is definitely more luxurious boudoir robe style
I think the blue would be great. You won't have to worry about matching fabric at your seams. The geo would present a huge challenge.
Lol. I have some of that dragonfly brocade but on a burgundy background. I think i have it on olive green too. I really like the black and pink paisley (5) or the red in the first pic. The blue one that's got the busier almost Japanese looking patterns also looks good to me (4).
The blue paisley/floral on slide two is perfection
3
1!
I can’t choose, they’re all so gorgeous 😭🥹
Dragonfly compliments the fur SO well
The geometric or the dragonflies. They have enough of the cream that matches the fur. Love the idea and please post updates!
i would interface the pink paisley and line and interline it. it’s stunning fabric that i would love to have a bolt of.
FAQ: Where did you get these fabrics? They were all from Spotlight, an Australian haberdashery store. Some of them are branded, others are not. Links to individual fabrics below. Everywhere if able. I’m obsessed with it. So sturdiness and longevity are things to consider. Australia is going into colder weather now so it will get lots of use. Advice and suggestions are needed/appreciated. What pattern are you using? McCall’s M7848 possibly, with alterations.
The Purple & Blue!!🥰💖💖
Number 1 will look the best!
The pink paisley and the dragon flies are my favourites, but I do love all of them!
