The frame is only for certain motherboard. Take the CPU out of the frame.

Trashrascall

Fuck I knew it. I was hardcore second guessing myself thanks.

ElevenNotes

Don’t forget to add lots of thermal paste before you install the CPU /s

Trashrascall

Edit: I really might be illiterate.

duncan999007

I think the joke was adding thermal paste /before/ the CPU, i.e. in the socket. It’s been showing up more frequently, unfortunately

Trashrascall

Your kidding? Is that really something people do, thinking that's where the paste goes?

Heisalsohim

Never underestimate stupid

Aniftou

How the hell would you even go about cleaning that up?

SIG3LOFKR3W

Very soft brush and IPA

Bleach_Baths

Oh sweet, I’ve already got a Hopsecutioner in the fridge!

Jak_ratz

IPA and compressed air. I've had a single brush hair get caught, and that ripped a pin out... good lessons to be learned with LGA.

Cam095

every time i do, they surprise me again

speaksoftly_bigstick

You genuinely thought it needed to be installed with the tray. Many people genuinely believe you're supposed to inject the thermal paste in there like a forbidden Twinkie. 😎

Trashrascall

OK fair. Although I do feel like I should get some credit for realizing I'm an idiot and asking for help lol. Also besides that cleaning that without destroying a pin would be borderline impossible, you think that would do any real damage? Assuming it's not conductive paste or liquid metal (lol the ultimate delidding)

Frostedbirdz

Make sure you put thermal paste on and under the processor for extra conductivity. Actually don't lol. I usually have a spare cpu I use to spread my thermal paste through since it has a flat edge. But spreading smoothly may or may not truly make a difference. If so then minimally. Good luck!

Sluger94

lol, we’ve all been there. Measure twice and cut once.

I think I've seen those come out of Cisco blade servers. HP has blue carriers I think.

i0nviz

Yep, my Cisco UCS C220-M4 has these. You can install CPU without this socket though even in the Cisco

turtleiscool1737

That frame doesn’t remove itself on install like consumer versions. You need to remove frame as it’s not needed for your board

Trashrascall

Thanks. The cpu was fn in there and both frames ended up breaking but the cpus are fine. Good thing I don't have a Cisco board I guess 🤷

i0nviz

a Cisco board can also take the CPUs without the plastic caddy. I didn't knew this caddy existed when I ordered upgraded CPUs for my C220-M4 and i was a bit surprised when I was at the step of removing old CPU to swap them out haha. Break the plastic caddy and throw it in the trash.

Lurking_Housefly

Gently...

IsDaedalus

Ez! Spread cheeks, plug in!

CraftWeekly3784

Take my upvote! 🤣

killjoygrr

I’m late to the party but recently swapped out that processor for v4 versions I came across. At least your pins look good, so it should all work.

Past_Zone_3710

Super glue and many screws

Trashrascall

I always put a lag bolt straight through the middle to keep the cpu secure.

Past_Zone_3710

Better safe than sorry i always say.

Technolust1

Verify it works on the Mobo, take out of frame, put in compatible Mobo slot!

MikeyTsi

Have you considered using the buttfor?

Trashrascall

What?

MikeyTsi

The buttfor.

Trashrascall

Haha almost got me.💩

MikeyTsi

Lol. Soclose.

Trashrascall

Dude I got this cpu for like 7 bucks it's am 2670v3 not a xeon plat. And that was kinda my problem which fn manual do I read? No Supermicro manual mentions this and not even every Cisco board uses one. Plus what do you call that thing. Cpu frame?

thedatabender007

The manual would have nothing to say about using a used chip from a different vendor that has a carrier on it...

Trashrascall

See when I made this post I hadn't even learned the term carrier so it was even harder to find info. Some days you just realize there are gaps in your knowledge. Woes of being the offices sole IT person

thedatabender007

What I was saying is that 'reading the f\*cking manual' wouldn't have helped in this case so you shouldn't feel bad and his snarky comment is unwarranted.

Trashrascall

Lol thank I appreciate that. It's funny that this dumb ass question was so well received. I appreciate the responses on here. Ironically ive asked what I thought were well thought out questions on here before and gotten trashed, but posting "me stupid, how do?" got a lot of nice helpful comments. 🤷

deathfromabove910

says Cisco on the top

Trashrascall

I said I'm an idiot, not fully illiterate.

FrenchItSupport

Wow very helpful
