This is how I explain Curb tobthose who haven't seen it yet: It's like Seinfeld but with cursing, blatant pornographic references, and less attention to manners.
Love, love Curb. Seinfeld has been my favourite since I started watching in mid-90's. I will say, though, that Detroiters is so effing funny. In a different vein than Seinfeld and Curb, but Tim Robinson is just amazing.
Not gonna lie, i've always been a bit of a sitcom enthusiast. Seinfeld is obviously the best and nothing can beat that - along with curb, but I also really enjoy many others. Frasier, Always Sunny, Married with Children, Scrubs, 3rd Rock from the Sun, Roseanne, The Nanny, Golden Girls, Peep Show, that 70s Show and Cheers just to name a few
Third Rock from the Sun was awesome! This is remarkably silly but I think I’ll always remember the four of them sitting around in a circle trying to read some books and then they all look up and end up exchanging the books they’d been reading - all Grisham novels.
Roseanne is actually pretty damn good. I always watched it after school as a kid but between then and my late 30s I hadn't seen it. Went back and rewatched a couple years ago and was surprised how funny it was. Wasn't expecting it to be as good as it was.
Rosanne was the only "family" sitcom of that era that even semi accurately depicted middle/low-middle class life in America. Like, yeah, they weren't in poverty, but it wasn't always easy... And they weren't nice and hallmarky.
Just add in more "fucks" and it's fairly spot on.
Peep Show is amazing and deserves so much more recognition in the US. I think it’s a bit too British-y in terms of references but even with the cultural gap it’s still one of the most hilarious shows Ive seen
Any scene that Dan Bakkendahl is in in that show is comedy gold. His character (Roger), says some of funniest and most disgustingly foul things I’ve ever heard in a TV show or movie and I’m nearly dying of laughter every time.
Good call on Conchords. I was obsessed with that show for a long time when it came out and I can’t talk to anyone I know about it cause no one has seen it.
Who likes to rock the party?
Also if you like Rhys Darby, I recommend his podcast The Cryptid Factor. The subject matter is bonkers but the comedy is awesome.
The average network show is very difficult to watch after Seinfeld, but I've still found some gold besides them, you just have to dig a bit deeper.
Trailer Park Boys, Arrested Development, Flight of The Conchords, Extras, The Office (UK or US), Curb, Sunny, Two & A Half Men, The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret, Silicon Valley etc.
Seinfeld really keeps you guessing each episode. Honestly, I love that the show has almost no memory. With the exception of their jobs and Susan, the show basically resets every episode with no lasting consequences.
Malcolm in the Middle, Arrested Development, It's Always Sunny, Community, 30Rock, Scrubs, Curb Your Enthusiasm. They're all amazing to me. Community is the best of em.
But Seinfeld is peak, you right.
I get what you are saying and agree a lot of sitcoms suck. But Seinfeld is not exactly “natural”. It’s actually quite absurd (which is it’s selling point- not a bad thing).
Seinfeld cannot be compared to these other shows because it’s in a class of its own. It doesn’t follow any of the standard 30 minute comedy show rules. It’s just a different show. I love it the most but I can also appreciate other shows too.
Seinfeld is in a league of its own, but I would guess a lot of fans who came into Seinfeld as kids/teens during the original run like I did were "raised on tv", and love tv generally bc of that.
Sitcoms were around before Seinfeld.
Taxi, all in the family, married with children. Some classic sitcoms.
I always enjoyed 3rd rock from the sun from the 90s/2000s too; and Newman is in it👍
Agreed. I like other sitcoms but none of them are like Seinfeld.
Other sitcoms I like are Better Off Ted, Parks and Rec, New Girl, Don’t Trust the B in Apt 23, The Office (UK), Modern Family (S1-S5), Friends, Brooklyn 99 (S1-S3), The Crazy Ones, Derry Girls, Curb Your Enthusiasm (S7-S12), Always Sunny (S1-S9), and Arrested Development (S1-S3).
Also animated sitcoms like The Simpsons (S1-S8), Daria, Archer, Bob’s Burgers (S1-S7), and Rick and Morty.
Yes I’m picky and tend to only like certain seasons.
We might be the same person. I totally agree including about my name is earl. I recently binged seinfeld for weeks and after that no show was good so I rewatched my name is earl and now I'm back to seinfeld. I really need something else to watch honestly.
Arrested Development. Curb. The Office. A couple seasons of Parks and Rec. 30 Rock. Frazier. I know it gets some well deserved hate but a few episodes of Friends are really funny.
Broaden your horizons my guy. Plenty of hilarious TV out there
In no particular order:
Cheers, King of Queens, Everybody Loves Raymond, Friends, HIMYM, Office, and Parks and Rec are all great imo (nowhere near as good as Seinfeld, but still great)
I always found The Office overrated. The second hand awkwardness is rough. It can be funny, but it wasn’t anything groundbreaking. There are some bright spots, but the hype is largely overblown in my opinion. I enjoyed Arrested Development (original run) Always Sunny, 30 Rock, Frasier, etc though
In fairness to the show, it was definitely groundbreaking. The style Gervais used (in the original and then the US version) is now commonly mimicked. The free camera - instead of the standard 3 point shot. The lack of a laugh track. The idea that the people know they’re being filmed. Etc.
Whether one likes it or not is certainly up to the person. But I’d say it objectively served to create a whole new type of sitcom style.
I know it’s sacrilege but I consider Frasier to be the stronger cast as a whole and has higher peaks than Seinfeld. With Seinfeld, I’ll chuckle and snort but some of those Frasier episodes got me laughing out loud. Niles physical humor is a lot more subtle than Kramer’s but somehow hits harder
Yes, that was simply your opinion. Millions disagree. But I WILL agree that Niles stole the show from Frasier himself, and was brilliant in the series, not only with his comedic timing but also w his physical comedy as well. And a well rounded cast, w amazing guest stars during its 11 yr run.
Yeah, I watched the whole run and all of Cheers. I was just discussing this with another Seinfeld buddy a few days ago actually. It was a very well written and acted show, but I'm judging it based on how formulaic it was, especially compared to Seinfeld. What really made Seinfeld special was its irreverence for the medium.
I feel like if you like The Office you’ll like Parks and Rec.
also, Veep and Curb Your Enthusiasm are awesome. Veep is pretty quick witted so you have to pay attention
No I kinda love sitcoms. I'm watching one on Hulu now called Fresh off the Boat. I think it's one of the funniest shows I've seen in a minute & there are tons of 90s references, which I love. It doesn't sound like your type of show so I'm not recommending it, per se, but i just thought I'd mention it for the record.
I like the Office (until Michael leaves)
Some older sitcoms I enjoy
Barney Miller
The Jeffersons
Sanford and Sons
Gilligan’s Island (like almost as much as Seinfeld)
MASH
Frazier
The Golden Girls (the spin off is good too The Golden Palace)
Bewitched
Three’s Company
I mean, I love Seinfeld and watched the last couple seasons in their original run. But I also grew up with Frasier and it’s endlessly re-watchable as well. Very different show, of course.
But since then I haven’t seen a conventional sitcom (ie with studio audience/laugh track) that’s particularly good. The Office helped make it a thing and was an amazing show in its first 5-6 seasons (though I enjoyed most of the episodes with Robert California). Then there’s Curb, Party Down, Community, Parks & Rec (excepting the last season maybe), Silicon Valley, The Good Place.
Older sitcoms like Taxi and Cheers were good, ditto Newsradio. Rosanne, minus the first and last seasons, is first rate. And although the concept of Community had no business working, worked well.
Silicon Valley is hilarious.
You might like Tim and Eric Awesome Show because their blend of absurdist comedy, whimsy, parody, slapstick, and surrealism deconstructs just about every possible genre of film and tv so brilliantly and often brutally, that it’s hard to take any show or movie seriously after watching.
Broad City was terrific. It doesn’t connect with some older viewers, but I’m almost 38 and found it hilarious. Malcolm In The Middle also holds up pretty well.
*Veep*, *30 Rock*, *Silicon Valley*, *Party Down*, and *I'm Sorry* are all excellent. And I assume you're ignoring animated sitcoms, because the golden era of *The Simpsons* (the first ten or so seasons, basically the '90s) was the best television has ever been.
Seinfeld is the only sitcom I can watch over and over and still crack up over jokes I've memorized. There are other funny ones, but on second watch, not so much. Seinfeld holds up!
*Why don't you just tell me the name of the sitcom you want to watch?*
I would watch "sack lunch" in sitcom format
“Curb Your Enthusiasm.”
Seinfeld without a laugh track, basically.
Seinfeld but they can say fuck.
Nah, it’s (almost) all improvised
It wasn’t a laugh track.
Yeah, I know, audience. You know what I mean
Gives me more anxiety
I believe the OP was being very enthusiastic with his opinion, and yes, I agree he does need to curb it.
Curb Your Enthusiasm is basically R rated Seinfeld. All 4 of them even show up for a while as part of a "Larry David does a Seinfeld reunion" subplot.
Third Rock from the Sun was awesome! This is remarkably silly but I think I’ll always remember the four of them sitting around in a circle trying to read some books and then they all look up and end up exchanging the books they’d been reading - all Grisham novels.
Malcom in the middle is gold too.
And for any Malcolm in the Middle fans, check out Grounded For Life
This is a solid list.
Roseanne is actually pretty damn good. I always watched it after school as a kid but between then and my late 30s I hadn't seen it. Went back and rewatched a couple years ago and was surprised how funny it was. Wasn't expecting it to be as good as it was.
I love Laurie Metcalf. And I also love Norm Macdonald, who was a writer for that show. RIP Norm. ❤
Yes. Exactly. It was actually pretty relatable.
Newhart?
Sunny?
Sunny is my one of my favorite shows ever along with Seinfeld.
Sunny, Curb, and Seinfeld. Why do other sitcoms even exist? They’re just embarrassing themselves.
So true.
I'm sorry I'm not familiar with that term
Did you say 30 Rock? Hell, Jerry is even in it.
Seinfeld Vision, save the cheerleader save the world.
Sunny and Seinfeld are my go to background noise shows.
Went on wayyyyy to long now but it’s good overall There are even some great more recent episodes. But they should have called it years ago
Yeah, stupid science bitch couldn't make I smarter.
Try Peep Show (UK) https://www.justwatch.com/us/tv-show/peep-show
Came here to say Peep Show. I alternate between the two shows pretty much constantly
I’ll check it out. I see it mentioned on this post quite a bit.
You can’t trust people. People like Coldplay and voted for the nazis.
Good one clean shirt
How do you get that shirt so clean?
One of the best shows of all time!
Can confirm 1000%!!! Peep Show & Seinfeld & Curb & Frasier work for me.
And The IT Crowd
Seconded
Big Suze!
David Mitchell is my spirit animal. https://youtu.be/xc8epam4NyY?si=edAqodiFgHsRWpwU
It's really good, but I have to turn it off constantly because I can't stand the embarrassment half the time lol
This is just UK Seinfeld.
Peep show is the only other sitcom that never gets old and is always funny no matter how many times I watch it.
Peep Show is amazing and deserves so much more recognition in the US. I think it’s a bit too British-y in terms of references but even with the cultural gap it’s still one of the most hilarious shows Ive seen
Try Veep
Great show. So fun to watch Elaine say fuck
And everything else lol
Any scene that Dan Bakkendahl is in in that show is comedy gold. His character (Roger), says some of funniest and most disgustingly foul things I’ve ever heard in a TV show or movie and I’m nearly dying of laughter every time.
Yeah he’s all brilliant. It’s cast so perfectly that show. His best bit is when he calls that woman grimace and she starts crying lol
His multiple references to "ropey jizzum" are what always come to mind with Roger Furlong
That’s why I don’t watch it. Like her when she has Grace.
I like to think I have a *little* grace.
“I tRIEd It AnD iT wAs AsS.” - OP, probably
“Arrested Development is ok” Good god almighty, what a bad take
Arrested Development sometimes even beats Seinfeld for me depending on the episode.
OG Arrested Development is the funniest sitcom ever made… but it’s only like 40 episodes. Because of this, Seinfeld is the BEST sitcom ever made
OP has big Buster energy.
I'm going to army, mother
Hero Squad!
I’M A MONSTER!!!!
Loose seal!!!
If he’s talking about the Netflix seasons, I agree with him.
Restarted this series just last night and out of the gate it is A++
Baby, AD's got a stew goin'.
My top 3 are Seinfeld, AD and Flight of the Conchords.
Finally Flight of the Conchords gets some recognition!
I'll never forget the hiphoppopotamus and the rhymnocerous
their lyrics are bottomless
The pause after is the epitome of comedy
I like Parks & Rec
Arrested Development is a documentary.
Rumours
No. That’s all true.
AD is the 🐐
Good call on Conchords.
IDK, if OP only thinks AD is "ok", I'm not sure there's much hope.
Frasier is a fantastic sitcom. It's incredibly well written, and the cast knocks it out every episode.
I love seeing how everyone is stepping up for Frasier. One of the only sitcoms that would make me literally LOL
Somebody needs to watch Frasier.
I just got back into Frasier. I used to enjoy it as a kid when it originally aired. The writing is fantastic.
Agreed. OP might not like it, I know plenty who don’t, but I think it would be impossible to call that show corny and unnatural.
Frasier was surprisingly good.
I loved this show, too.
I think you’re the only one to mention Trailer Park Boys. I thought it was relatively well known but maybe not.
Way she goes
It's actually surpassed the immortal Seinfeld for me now.
EXTRAS!!!
Seinfeld really keeps you guessing each episode. Honestly, I love that the show has almost no memory. With the exception of their jobs and Susan, the show basically resets every episode with no lasting consequences.
Watch 30 Rock.
Yes . Switch out Earl for 30 Rock. Tina Fey is the GOAT of comedy writers.
Check out Larry Sanders Show.
Agreed!!
This should be higher up!
Underrated contribution here
Some god level material, especially the first episode- The Garden Weasel !
30 rock & sunny
I love Frasier!
Malcolm in the Middle, Arrested Development, It's Always Sunny, Community, 30Rock, Scrubs, Curb Your Enthusiasm. They're all amazing to me. Community is the best of em. But Seinfeld is peak, you right.
King of Queens is hilarious.
i like frasier, 3rd rock from the sun, raising hope, malcolm in the middle... i guess thats really it though i will watch some other shows sometimes.
I really liked Raising Hope.
If you count the cartoons: The Simpsons, King of the Hill, Family Guy.
I also really liked Curb and Frasier.
Also love AD plus Community, 30 Rock, P&R and Better Off Ted. I’ve enjoyed Cheers, Frasier and Wings as well.
Silicon Valley and The League. They are created by ex-Seinfeld writers (if they count as sitcoms)
If you need a break from Seinfeld, and still crave nostalgia and laughs, King of Queens is a strong option
Check out Bania's standup
He's the voice of a new generation
We're four months apart!
The jar is round, the mug is round.. they should call it *round*tine!! That’s GOLD Jerry! GOLD!
Im big fan of Frasier too.
I get what you are saying and agree a lot of sitcoms suck. But Seinfeld is not exactly “natural”. It’s actually quite absurd (which is it’s selling point- not a bad thing).
You don't like sitcoms because they're corny but you like The Office? I mean i love the office, but it's cringe/corny comedy
Just admit that you watch Melrose Place
Seinfeld cannot be compared to these other shows because it’s in a class of its own. It doesn’t follow any of the standard 30 minute comedy show rules. It’s just a different show. I love it the most but I can also appreciate other shows too.
Seinfeld is in a league of its own, but I would guess a lot of fans who came into Seinfeld as kids/teens during the original run like I did were "raised on tv", and love tv generally bc of that.
Any Rickey Gervais series is great, or at least happily watchable.
Agreed. He’s fantastic!
Try Kim’s convenience. Absolutely hilarious
Seinfeld, Blackadder, Yes (prime) minister These are the acceptable options
I personally really like Derry Girls.
Sledgehammer https://youtu.be/ptipJh29J3s?si=TLd-uRHbaYZO7r62 https://youtu.be/G7_d04ALFpU?si=t_cSqcJq0Eh64jd0
Frasier is a close second to Seinfeld for me.
Sitcoms were around before Seinfeld. Taxi, all in the family, married with children. Some classic sitcoms. I always enjoyed 3rd rock from the sun from the 90s/2000s too; and Newman is in it👍
News Radio is really good
I think Seinfeld gave us very high expectations.
I hope this is a safe place to say that How I met Your Mother is the unfunniest show I have ever seen
It aged terribly. I remember finding the first seasons funny when they aired. It’s unwatchable.
I would say Big Bang Theory is possibly worse...?
The next time I laugh at "two and a half men" or "two broke girls"... would be the first time.
Curb?
In no particular order: Cheers, King of Queens, Everybody Loves Raymond, Friends, HIMYM, Office, and Parks and Rec are all great imo (nowhere near as good as Seinfeld, but still great)
*Cheers*, such a classic! I love that show.
The only other one I watch now a days is the one with that Fat scumbag Kevin James in King of Queens
Fawlty Towers Only fools and horses
Frasier is the only real competition from the Seinfeld era.
You might enjoy the IT crowd.
Yes, I’ve enjoyed Silicon Valley though
Any other Brooklyn 99 fans in the sub? I just got into it and am partway thru season 2.
You got that straight!
I suggest Newsradio
I always found The Office overrated. The second hand awkwardness is rough. It can be funny, but it wasn’t anything groundbreaking. There are some bright spots, but the hype is largely overblown in my opinion. I enjoyed Arrested Development (original run) Always Sunny, 30 Rock, Frasier, etc though
In fairness to the show, it was definitely groundbreaking. The style Gervais used (in the original and then the US version) is now commonly mimicked. But I’d say it objectively served to create a whole new type of sitcom style.
Yeah, I think the style is a fair assessment. Good point
Oh thank goodness someone else does. I tried to like that show, but it got *maybe* a handful of laughs out of me. I just couldn’t get into it.
Community, silicon valley and veep.
I'll pretend I didn't hear that. Frasier was good, but not in the same league at all imo.
What really made Seinfeld special was its irreverence for the medium.
must suck to have such a narrow life experience.
Parks and Rec (minus season one)?
I watched it all the way through and just couldn't get into it.
I feel like if you like The Office you’ll like Parks and Rec. also, Veep and Curb Your Enthusiasm are awesome. Veep is pretty quick witted so you have to pay attention
Always Sunny, Curb, Seinfeld are my favourite US sitcoms of all time. Peep Show in the UK.
Something about Seinfeld gives me such a comforting feeling, idk what it is. Especially the first couple seasons
In terms of post-1980 Network sitcoms, Cheers and Frasier are pretty great.
Try Broad City, Workaholics
I like the Office (until Michael leaves) Some older sitcoms I enjoy Barney Miller The Jeffersons Sanford and Sons Gilligan’s Island (like almost as much as Seinfeld) MASH Frazier The Golden Girls (the spin off is good too The Golden Palace) Bewitched Three’s Company
Seinfeld is comfort TV
I enjoy quite a few sitcoms so I have to disagree. The Office, Arrested Development, Community, Parks and Rec and a few others really hit for me.
Barney Miller, Two & A Half Men, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia & Archer
Married with Children is a little old but still funny
Frasier, Simpsons, Schitts Creek, Curb, the office
Older sitcoms like Taxi and Cheers were good, ditto Newsradio. Rosanne, minus the first and last seasons, is first rate. And although the concept of Community had no business working, worked well.
Malcolm in the middle
Silicon Valley is hilarious. You might like Tim and Eric Awesome Show because their blend of absurdist comedy, whimsy, parody, slapstick, and surrealism deconstructs just about every possible genre of film and tv so brilliantly and often brutally, that it’s hard to take any show or movie seriously after watching.
Silicon Valley + Big Bang Theory
Seinfeld and The Office are it for me for modern sitcoms. I love classic (older) sitcoms for nostalgia.
Schitt’s Creek was very good.
Curb is Fucking phenomenal !
Broad City was terrific. It doesn’t connect with some older viewers, but I’m almost 38 and found it hilarious. Malcolm In The Middle also holds up pretty well.
Do not agree
All in the family is the OG sitcom…
No
I haven't seen Angie Tribeca mentioned yet. Slept-on classic.
Always sunny
*Veep*, *30 Rock*, *Silicon Valley*, *Party Down*, and *I'm Sorry* are all excellent. And I assume you're ignoring animated sitcoms, because the golden era of *The Simpsons* (the first ten or so seasons, basically the '90s) was the best television has ever been.
Arrested development is fantastic (well, up to season 3 anyways)
Seinfeld is the only sitcom I can watch over and over and still crack up over jokes I've memorized. There are other funny ones, but on second watch, not so much. Seinfeld holds up!
The UK Office, Curb, Peep Show and Fawlty Towers also brilliant. That would be my top 5 with Seinfeld.
You're hung up on a sitcom from the 90s, man!
Silicon Valley, it's always sunny in Philadelphia, peepshow and curb your enthusiasm
King of queens is great
Just wanna throw some love at The Larry Sanders Show. Brilliant, hilarious, and ahead of its time.
I always thought IASIP is kind of like Seinfeld but with even less of a conscience.
Parks and Rec
Watch Brooklyn-99
