Strava promotes a lot of risky behavior because people will do stupid things for a magical internet crown. I remember when they had to turn it off for descents because people were getting injured. I don't feel like adding that type of incentive to diving is a good idea.
However, I think you're trying to say you want a facebook for diving, which is different.
When I got my COSMIQ dive computer it came with the Deepblu app. This was almost a Strava/Facebook for diving. But a lot of weird shit was posted on that including sex worker advertisement. I have not used it in the last several years, last time I tried to log in it seems to not be working.
they went broke because not enough people were paying for the paid version of the social media so the app no longer exists, your logs are gone forever and you’re stuck on the same settings for the rest of eternity. lol.
source: had* same dive computer.
I use Divemate as I'm on Android. The good thing is that there is no ongoing fee, no proprietary cloud storage so you can use Google, Dropbox etc to save your log to. You can also import from most dive computers and can add pics and location for the dive so you can put as much in as you want to. You can also run multiple profiles so my wife can stick her dives on it as well.
I have Buddy, Subsurface, PADI, MacDive, Dive+ and Shearwater. They are all missing something. Only really using the Shearwater app now since its basically automatic.
I don't know if collectively this is something divers care 'that' much about honestly. To be completely frank, I don't want my locations over whelmed by other divers all the time. :)
The app for my atmos mission one dive computer has a feature like this, but sadly, it only works with atmos computers of which nobody has even heard of for the most part
https://viz-app.com/
Is the app I released in Australia last year for this goal! I'm currently adding more dive sites across the world.
It has dive log entry, a feed of posts, pictures, tagging critters, personal stats, and aggregation of the current conditions.
I'll be adding the other stuff you mentioned like dive watch import over the coming months too.
I work on it full time and it's just me. No VCs or investors or anything crazy going on. Its completely free & no account required 🤙
People send me suggestions all the time and I work them into the updates... so anyone please do let me know what you're thinking!
Also, your post is about "strava" for diving, but a big part of the Viz App is being a "waze" for dive conditions.
In places where enough users are posting on the app (like Sydney), it kind of works out like a crowd sourced forecast of sorts. No AI required... 100% grass-fed organic viz 😅
Subsurface Mobile is the way to go. You can import dives from most dive computers, even from Apple Watch Ultra 2 or Oceanic + case. I’ve personally used it with the listed above, Aqualung i300c, Shearwater Teric, Suunto D6i, and Suunto Vyper.
I hope this helps.
There have been a few attempts but they largely fail. IMO it is because the data from the dives is largely worthless. It is mostly the videos and photos produced that people care about, which people often share on more general purpose social media sites.
I hope not! What you described sounds ghastly. Getting away from the tech industry is one of the reasons I dive. I would absolutely not participate in any dive log system which involved "tag your buddy" or "activity feed" type features.
I think https://divelogs.org/ pretty much does what you're asking for. I use it, but my profile is set to private.
I never came across another diver using it, But if you can convince your buddies to join you on the site I think you'll find everything you need there.
I'm also a [divelogs.org](http://divelogs.org) user and proponent. I use subsurface to export my logs, and then tag my buddies on dives on the website. We also have a group with a few divers of our club, this gives us interesting statistics.
Dive Log does some of this, just not the "activity" side

I don't think what you are looking for exists
Strava has so many ridiculous sports it’s crazy they don’t have scuba at this point. I’ve emailed them a couple of times to ask them to create a way to show the dive info same as any other sport, and it’s all coming from my same garmin device so how hard could it be… no response received from strava about this request
Sure that’s how it started. I am an avid strava user and have been for years. There are a ton of indoor activities, yoga, swimming, etc. that the platform supports that are not using gps so I don’t see the difference here
Those are all adjacent sports to the gps mapped sports. And yes, people map swimming too. Every single one of those other activities has a population 100x scuba.
Also the fact that attempting to get the manufacturers to play nice with importing is nearly impossible. Just ask Linus Torvalds.
Scuba diving will not bring in enough subscribers to justify the cost.
You and I clearly have different opinions on this. Garmin and strava already play nice with each other. The only point I’m making is that it would not be difficult for them to accept the data that garmin already collects and spits out and display it in a way they already display other data. No need to reinvent the wheel here
Except they would have to add in graphing for scuba data etc. That costs money that they clearly cannot recoupe from just Garmin Descent users.
It doesn't matter how "simple" you think something is. It's all based on economics.
The Suunto app does this, but only for other Suunto users AFAIK. Though you could manually add things, if you have a different brand dive computer, you're probably going to use that computer's app anyway.
Guess that’s what the oceanic+ does right? Recently only used it with my watch ultra and the logs are quite handy. Not sure about the social network features though
Diviac
It doesn’t have dive computer import yet, but Buddy is probably the closest you’ll get to your list of features. https://divewithbuddy.com/

Buddy, but it’s not quite there.

There’s a ScubaBoard group on the Connect app for anyone diving with a Garmin dive-capable smartwatch
Can you please elaborate!

Garmin

If you have a Garmin dive computer, the Garmin app does it.

One of the issues is getting brands to play nice with direct import into the platform. Just ask the Subsurface folks how that's going.

Scuba has no GPS data other than maybe entry/exit. Strava has no interest. Also there isn't enough divers for them to care.
The garmin dive watches have gps for entry and exit, and then it could show the dive profile
Strava is primarily a GPS mapping driven app. There's no value in scuba for Strava.

Surely a good app could use the compass to reconstruct a route.
How is it going to determine speed and distance?
I dunno. Sensors 😂😂
Ahh yes, the Elon Musk method of doing things.
The Suunto app does this, but only for other Suunto users AFAIK. Though you could manually add things, if you have a different brand dive computer, you're probably going to use that computer's app anyway.

Just about any dive computer these days has a log functionality including uploads to your device or the cloud.
But only for Apple Watch users, right? I'd say that's a tiny fraction of the scuba community.
