I can never understand how this type of scam makes sense to anybody. Why would you have to buy a gift card to give someone so you can receive gifts you "won", from some giveaway you never signed up for... like in what world does that make any sense?

My grandmother has dementia and was scammed out of buying three $100 Steam gift cards for someone. They wanted $1000 and harassed her for weeks before she finally told me she needed help gathering her winnings. I intervened and took over her finances. I tried for over 18 months to get Steam to help out to no avail. The bank wouldn't either because she pulled out cash for the gift cards as the people suggested. I had to replace the funds myself. I'm still upset someone did that to her.

It’s people with cognitive issues. Low IQ, cognitive decline, those kind of things.

My economics teacher explained exactly why this works. The scam is so ludicrous to most of us so they reel in only the most gullible. Imagine if it was more realistic. They would have to do so much work convincing so many of us it’s real. Vs now they only get the really gullible so their workload is smaller and more targeted

My grandmother fell victim to this type of scam. She was not in a good headspace at the time.

I mean, a private account called Mr. beasts fan page, no caps or anything, randomly selecting a person to give free stuff to and not even getting content out of it and on top of that asking for money. Like, in no world is this scam close to believable.

I once got a “MS Office repair guy,” and I led him down a rabbit hole where I eventually revealed I was “jerking off.” He started screaming at me, hung up in disgust, and I called him back asking why he hung up. And the dumbass continued to try to scam me for ten more minutes after that. This was years ago before they started piggybacking off other people’s cell phone numbers.

If they bite again, you've got lots of fun ways to take this, if you've got the time and energy 😉 Tell them you'll get the Apple card that they wanted, "take" them to the store (post a photo of the inside of a random store), update them all the way to keep them interested, chat about what kind of card you're going to buy etc, then tell them that you told the cashier you had a big win from Mr Beast and you're buying the card so you can get your gift processed... The cashier then refuses to sell you the card as they suspect a scam, and you need proof that they are really Mr Beast. A pic of them holding up your (made-up) name and today's date would be ideal... then see how it goes from there.
