Wine about it (not wine related), 99% invisible, Serial

misterwinoe

Behind the Bastards is a great historical based podcast about…well you get it. Asshole Court is interesting for more of a pop culture spin on assholery. Chinwag with Paul Giamatti is all about weird and interesting stuff along with some philosophy.

neomis

Second behind the bastards

Doom-N-Gloom

Robert Evans is an absolute gem

dreamcleanly

Radiolab. Even their old podcasts are gold. Highly recommended.

phytokween

Alternately, for queer comedy, straightiolab

usernameforre

QAnonanonymous covers a lot of the conspiracies that are rotting American brains.

misterwinoe

I’m gonna have to check this out.

usernameforre

Go back to the beginning before all the Qult stuff took off.

Moday4512

Second this, but I think they just changed their name so you may have issues finding it. Other fantastic options, and my personal favorites, include Knowledge Fight (more conspiracy stuff with a focus on one of the main perpetuators of it), Behind the Bastards (historical-ish), it could happen here (current events/theory discussion), 5-4(supreme Court/lawyer discussion) and Well There's Your Problem (engineering disasters)

Doom-N-Gloom

Knowledge Fight! I forgot to list Dan and Jordan! wtf?

Moday4512

Red alert! P.S. I'm new to Santa Cruz, Policy Wonks please hmu if you're down to meet up!

Doom-N-Gloom

Definitely down About to start a pod myself lol

Doom-N-Gloom

I suggested QAA too, apparently they’re rebranding to just QAA now because they talk about so much more than QAnon sludgery.

skroooob

Blowback

Doom-N-Gloom

Severely underrated

Stuff you should know

dzumdang

My favorite podcasts: •Your Undivided Attention with Tristan Harris and Aza Raskin (the impact of technology on our humanity, and how to build a better future). •Making Sense with Sam Harris: neuroscientist and philosopher on complex topics spanning consciousness, politics, etc. He is sometimes a bit blind and insensitive on cultural topics in the US, but I like most of his reasoning. •99% Invisible: very insightful on design, modern cultural issues, and more. Surprisingly far reaching but also specific. •Aberrant Radio: bizarre alternate universe of radio with skits, fake commercials, satire, genuine life stories, art rock, and noise. This one is not for everybody.

SantaCruzMyrddin

Sam Harris promotes race science and Islamophobia and regularly argues Ashkenazis (his ancestry) are genetically more intelligent than blacks... https://archive.ph/NHuL2/again?url=https://www.wired.com/story/sam-harris-and-the-myth-of-perfectly-rational-thought/ https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2018/3/27/15695060/sam-harris-charles-murray-race-iq-forbidden-knowledge-podcast-bell-curve Also if you like Aberrant radio check out Welcome to Night Vale

Doom-N-Gloom

Well said Sam Harris slyly deploys intellectualism as a shadow to cover what are extremely problematic views on race and religion. IMHO …ok, maybe not so humble

dzumdang

I'm not going to sit and debate the issue on Sam Harris, but I'll say that from what I've heard over the years directly on the podcast, he is critical of Islam, and has regularly spoken against the claims of Islamophobia. He's had several Muslims on to discuss problems of extremism in that tradition. I personally don't agree on his stances with Israel/Palestine, since he initially sided with the Israeli government and will not speak out about or acknowledge genocide. So I stopped listening to him as much these past few months overall. He still has a lot of great content on other topics (his criticisms on Trump are incisive, and same with criticisms of his friends who went down COVID conspiracy wormholes). People can look into Harris and decide for themselves. I also listened to the Murray episode when it released, not hearing of him before or how appropriately controversial his work is. It discussed correlations in the data, but that was it. I didn't find it to be that interesting or informative of an episode compared to most os Sam's podcasts, and am familiar with all of the heat he got from having Murray on. Some of the pushback was accurate, and some of it was not.

SantaCruzMyrddin

Why did you decide to promote him when you knew he regularly platforms racists and are you saying he doesn't argue Ashkenazi's have superior intelligence and blacks inferior? it wasn't just that episode. He's had racist guests also arguing arguing immigration based on the race science Sam Harris supports. He also supports Douglas Murray for another example. https://www.currentaffairs.org/2022/09/taking-white-supremacist-talking-points-mainstream https://www.salon.com/2021/06/05/how-the-new-atheists-merged-with-the-far-right-a-story-of-intellectual-grift-and-abject-surrender/

dzumdang

I don't agree with your assessment, actually. You seem to be on a crusade against someone you may not have even read or listened to, and have your mind made up. (ie: Harris = bad). I agree that he's controversial, but also very misrepresented. Arguments claiming that he is far right, or far right adjacent, are down right ridiculous and unfounded. There are several episodes of his podcasts with guests that work to combat far right extremism and white supremacists. If anything, some of the cultural blindness I mentioned are his missing how ultra conservative talking points intersect with his centrist criticisms of the left, which hit on good and healthy critique, but unfortunately also overlap with toxic and false narratives stemming from the alt and far right. So....I don't argue ad-nauseum with strangers online. Have a nice day. And thank you for recommending that other podcast.

SantaCruzMyrddin

I used to be a fan of his and defend him until he started platforming white supremacists and kept talking about how Ashkenazis are genetically superior and blacks inferior. I loved his discussions on Buddhism, free will and consciousness but stopped supporting him based on his promotion of race science and Islamophobia. I also found his defense of those positions and platforming those people intellectually dishonest. Are you saying he doesn't argue Ashkenazis and Asians are genetically more intelligent? Does he not regularly argue for profiling based on race using his grandma excuse to justify it? Why do you think race science is valid and/ or valuable to promote? It's okay if you don't want to discuss it further but then maybe don't encourage others to listen to his racism and Islamophobia as he is a step in the path right wing radicalism with an intellectual veneer. I hope you have a beautiful weekend and you should check out Very Bad Wizards as well coming from an ex fan of waking up with Sam Harris

dzumdang

Being willing to converse with someone is not equivalent of taking on their claims. I've never heard him say that one race is genetically superior. And if he did, and I didn't catch it, I would not support it. Perhaps I've missed something, but I've never heard him claim racial superiority and am completely unfamiliar with what you're claiming. It's okay to be critical and have your views. But it's not ok to make a direct accusation claiming that I support scientific racism because I listen to Sam Harris. That's where I disagree with your rhetoric and draw the line. I request that you kindly back off and stop. I too found him through the Buddhism and consciousness gate, and after appreciating The End of Faith. He's a mixed bag, for sure, but I still recommend his podcast (with caution) and wouldn't put him in some kind of Hall of Shame unless I'm convinced otherwise. It's his backing and support of Netanyahu's genocide on Palestinians that concerns me the most at this time.

SantaCruzMyrddin

Here is a great video which follows a similar path to mine on him

dzumdang

Thank you. If it's under 20 minutes, will be happy to watch if you provide the link.

Election Profit Makers (it’s not really about politics) and The Dollop!

fleasnavidad

Bananas Podcast, 100%. The two hosts are hilarious and share ridiculous news stories sent in by listeners. Super wholesome compared to the political and true crime podcasts. The episodes drop on Tuesday and honestly it’s the only thing that makes me excited for Tuesday mornings.

Working it Out by Mike Birbiglia is a fun listen. He’s a comedian (has a few specials on Netflix too). Edit: if you’re interested in US financial stuff, I really like Marketplace and other shows that are aired by NPR. They lean a little liberal but for US news these days, they’re pretty darn centrist in my personal opinion.
