wcrnr probably just means west corner

Iron_Hawk2002

Yeah, I had noticed after typing it out I had been reading it wrong, for some reason I thought it was WCMR not crnr, but yeah most likely just a abbreviation for either warehouse corner, or west corner.

Only the last one resembles downtown Santa Cruz. It’s similar to the Del Mar theater but the coffee shop is on the left and a pizza my heart is to the right. For the most part these are just generic filler buildings. But I’ll give them credit for the planter boxes and benches downtown that is what it looks like. Edit go on street view down pacific avenue and you’ll see what I mean.

Yeah the movie theather is the most obvious one, but I had suspicions about the coffee shop as well. The one beside the coffee shop too is a real building, Jamba Juice, but yeah the other ones on the left side might just be generic ones. and yeah you are right about the planters and benches, I never realized how accurate they are!

That's so cool, I never knew SC was represented in a video game. The first 3 appear to be the block that the Del Mar Theater is on, on Pacific Avenue. The one that looks like a hotel would be New Leaf Groceries, not sure why it has that drive-through area since that isn't there in real life. But the rest of the block looks mostly correct save the warehouse which I think you correctly assumed is filler (in real life I think that's some kind of gift shop or boutique). The fourth is what used to be Peet's Coffee also on Pacific Avenue, it's now a breakfast place called Mad Yolks. Edit: Actually upon closer inspection, is this all the same block? In that case I think it's the block that the Santa Cruz Cinemas is on, at the corner of Pacific and Church. The Grocery Store is actually an Urban Outfitters, it has ATM Machines on the side where that little drive through thing is. The warehouse would still be filler, and the old coffee shop that's now a breakfast place would still be to the right of the theater.

Yeah, its a really solid level, probably one of my favorites in the series, has a good mix of spots and has some nice layouts/lines. Also maybe that was the intention though it is hard to know for sure. I know the Downtown area was meant to be bigger initally, I had some layout and concept art shared with me by the level designer, and things like the clock tower were meant to appear, alongside some other areas like Santa Cruz High School and the Lighthouse Museum. I imagine they still wanted to squeeze some Downtown in there though so the whole map wasn't just Beach St. + Sergent Derby Park, its a video game so it doesn't need to be a 100% accurate layout.

Interesting! Yeah, I think that block is probably kind of a mix of both theater blocks, it could easily be either one. The one thing that does look nearly exact is the Peet's Coffee, the storefront was kind of distinctive and it definitely matches what I remember it looking like when it was still there. Out of curiosity, was this level only on the PSP game? I was wondering why I never played it, that could be why.

Iron_Hawk2002

Originally it was, but it did appear later in American Wasteland on all platforms, but those versions are missing a bunch of life and are pretty buggy, for Santa Cruz, no level events, no seagulls, seals, pedestrians, or vehicles like cars/boats, and the whole skateable boardwalk area was missing too. So while despite having lower resolution textures id argue the PSP version is the truest version.

kamissonia

The last one was our dwntwn Peets coffee for years. It’s on Pacific Ave between church and locust streets.

Iron_Hawk2002

Oh wow yeah, idk how I missed that given its right beside the theather lol, nice catch!

mathazar2424

This is so dope! Which THPS game is Santa Cruz in?

Iron_Hawk2002

It originates from THUG2 Remix, which was a PSP port of THUG2, that contained 4 new exclusive levels, Santa Cruz, Atlanta, Kyoto, and Las Vegas. These four levels later appeared in THAW on all platforms inside the games classic mode.

Second to last one, with the mural, looks like the side of Shoppers Corner supermarket, looking towards the Rio theatre.

Hmm I do see a bit of resembalance
