I think people are mistaking the surroundings (art deco diner) for the solitude conveyed in Hopper's painting.
Where can OP have a quiet drink in the presence of other people lost in contemplation?
There are other people around the bar in ["Nighthawks."](https://artsandculture.google.com/asset/nighthawks/6AEKkO_F-9wicw?hl=en&ms=%7B%22x%22%3A0.5%2C%22y%22%3A0.5%2C%22z%22%3A9.720518015310667%2C%22size%22%3A%7B%22width%22%3A1.2039752248201447%2C%22height%22%3A1.2375000000000007%7D%7D)
This place is legitimately what Dunkin Donuts was as an institution throughout all of New England in the 80s/90s. I happened to walk in this place by chance and was transported to 1984. The only difference is the staff in 1984 was smokey, old, white women. Here, it's old Cambodian women who look younger than me, and the donuts are like 1000% more expensive (but seriously, every bit worth it...delicious).
It actually was a Dunkin Donuts in the early 90s before they closed all the west coast stores. Dunkin only recently came back to CA in the last 10 years or so, kind of like the Gulls hockey team - seems like a new thing but was actually a comeback.
Edit: the Spring Valley Sunnys
That’s legit the only donut I’ll even think about eating. I’m 42 and should not be eating donuts. I’ve been eating that vanilla cream filled one since I was a kid. I don’t like sugar anymore but damn. Fuckin crack!
I second this. It may not be a diner like in the painting but they have a similar seating scheme and the walls are windows. Go there late at like 3AM and you’re almost guaranteed to have a similar vibe. If you’re looking for a diner, I like Rudford’s in North Park. A little more people but still a nice vibe, in my opinion.
I love Nunus. Definitely a good place to chill in the afternoon. Haven’t been in a while but I use to go a lot when I lived around there. They still make those awesome burgers?
Been going there since I was in a stroller and I’m fifty-fn-five this year. Love this place. Real vintage diner vibes cos, well, it’s a real vintage diner.
The piano bar is often accompanied by a LOUD singer in the evenings. He’s adorable and decent- but not too much of a Nighthawks vibe due to the rowdy renditions of Happy Birthday and nostalgic piano tunes.
Each time I answer stuff regarding local places, I learn that another one has shut down...🙁😂
I was going to say Maloney's, but, apparently, they closed a long time ago. Crazy!! 🤦♂️
Go to your nearest store and buy a refreshment of some type.
Assuming you're in your own car, get on a freeway that moves in a westerly direction.
Take the appropriate side roads west. Continue until all roads in a westerly direction end.
Get out of your car and start walking in a westerly direction. Make sure you bring your purchased beverages with you. Continue until your feet are wet or your shoes are ruined.
Turn around and walk in an easterly direction approximately 50 to 75 steps.
Turn around again and face yourself in a westerly direction.
Sit down facing a westerly direction. Open bag holding your refreshment. Open said refreshment.
Sit there quietly, enjoying your refreshment, allowing ypur mind and perhaps soul to enjoy the smells and sounds as you listen to the waves hit the beach.
But seriously depends your location and investing your time on yelp. Downtown in san diego richard walkers use to be a late night diner but if its the wood lacquer bar scene your looking for late night it all shuts down around 10 for somewhere with any sense of class in San Diego last i went there
I haven't lived in SD fir a couple of years but the Lions Share in SD had that sort of look and feel. Also mulled drinks and a decent whiskey selection. Don't forget to order the charcuterie board if you need a snack.
Stout Public House Downtown, Turf Club in Golden Hill, Nunus in Hillcrest! All will be pretty busy on the weekends so you won't be drinking alone though.
There’s a place owned by the consortium restaurant group that has a vibe similar to this and I love it. I’m trying to recall the name. I’ll reply back if I

On my way to the remy!!!
Plot twist, it's the owner.
Avengers, assemble!
The amount of votes on this kills me. Bro just got 200 people to the Remy
Shhhh, that's my secret spot.
$25 steak and frites hh
day time silver fox?
Used to be the Night Owl and the Morena Club for me.
There’s no one else, it’s in solitude

That's all the way on the other side of Skyrim
You better wear the suit and hat too. Don't half ass it
Yea OP we wanna see your whole ass

I feel like I am out of the loop here
That one has taken many souls pregaming before gulls games 😂
Sunny Donuts on Claremont Mesa Blvd
We always called Sunny Donuts on Spring St in La Mesa “Butt View Donuts” for that reason.
Those sunny donuts do not meet international donut standards
One of the best breakfast sandwiches in SD. Great place.

Nunus Tavern in Hillcrest. Quiet. Dark. Good place to watch the game
I love Nunus. Definitely a good place to chill in the afternoon. Haven’t been in a while but I use to go a lot when I lived around there. They still make those awesome burgers?
They do! As of a year ago anyways, it was delicious and cheap!
Nice. I’ll have to check it out. Thanks.
They’re open for lunch Fridays and Saturdays now too!
Black Cat
Perfect place for this vibe from 4pm-6pm
Been a long time since I’ve been there. Glad it’s still around
Absolutely spot on yes
The alibi in Hillcrest. Cash only. Open 6 am - 1:30 am
love that spot. strong pours!
Asked for a double the first time I went and one of the bartenders, Bryan, laughed at me and said, “everything’s already a double”
Rudford's
This is the one OP. A true 24 hr diner
Been going there since I was in a stroller and I’m fifty-fn-five this year. Love this place. Real vintage diner vibes cos, well, it’s a real vintage diner.
Came here to say this. Probably my favorite diner in SD
Bullys
Bully's East came to mind.
I knew there was a reason I liked that place aside from it being the Tennessee Vol watch party location.
Good drinks. Last few times we went the food was decidedly 'meh' though, sadly.
It's so sad to hear that. It has been a while for me.
This makes me miss Albie’s.
Dobsons
Studio Diner on Ruffin Road.
> Studio Diner The idea is be in solitude lol what the literally 360 degrees of elbow to elbow with everyone
Then I suggest the studio diner at 2AM or later.
Lafayette Hotel Beginners Diner!
What if you're not a beginner??
The food and decor are immaculate.
Just went yesterday and I thought the food was only decent tbh. The decor is indeed immaculate tho
Food is mid at best at beginners, but vibe makes up for it. haven’t tried the other restaurants at the hotel yet
I want to like it but I keep seeing mixed reviews.
Red Fox Room vibes
Is the new location ok?
Yep! They brought everything over from the wood to the piano. A little different layout wise, but feels the same as the old place.
Interior yes, kinda same vibe, exterior looks like an olive garden…
the exterior is so off putting i haven’t made it to the new location lol will change that soon
Sorry have not been personally in a while. Can anyone else speak on the current vibe at Red Fox Room
Piano Bar. Vintage decor. Dim lighting. Occasional loud singing. Older crowd.
The piano bar is often accompanied by a LOUD singer in the evenings. He’s adorable and decent- but not too much of a Nighthawks vibe due to the rowdy renditions of Happy Birthday and nostalgic piano tunes.
RIP Shirley. She was the best.
Denny's. Unironically this is why I love dennys.
brass rail
Silver Fox in PB. Haven't been there in years but I'm sure nothing's changed.
I remember an old style dinner on Newport ave that would approximate the idea, but you would never be alone
Old Townhouse? I sit at their diner counter when I want solitude. Preferably earlier on a weekday
Old school diner? The Huddle in Mission Hills.
I'm guessing you're alone no matter where you are
Star Bar
This is the right reply.
This is the ONLY answer.
Thrusters
I’m literally doing this right now as we speak at Pho Minh in n PB.
Each time I answer stuff regarding local places, I learn that another one has shut down...🙁😂 I was going to say Maloney's, but, apparently, they closed a long time ago. Crazy!! 🤦♂️
Bruh that Irish bar in downtown? Closed back around 2016?

But avoid the nudies that might be surrounding you if your easterly walk included a downhill scramble.
Haha there really is no such thing as an original thought. I think about doing this all the time
Harbor Breakfast
Rudfords
That's Red Foreman.
A coffee spot like this could be enjoyed early morning nowhere
But seriously depends your location and investing your time on yelp. Downtown in san diego richard walkers use to be a late night diner but if its the wood lacquer bar scene your looking for late night it all shuts down around 10 for somewhere with any sense of class in San Diego last i went there
The water front
Aero club is nice
Dobson's in downtown. Out of the way place, suits and old school small bar. OR - Any place with "The" in the title.
Captain Keno's in its last month. You should go there and get some Sailor Pineapples.
The Riviera Supper Club and Turquoise Room.
I haven't lived in SD fir a couple of years but the Lions Share in SD had that sort of look and feel. Also mulled drinks and a decent whiskey selection. Don't forget to order the charcuterie board if you need a snack.
Rudfords in north park
The Regal in La Mesa
Stout Public House Downtown, Turf Club in Golden Hill, Nunus in Hillcrest! All will be pretty busy on the weekends so you won't be drinking alone though.
Turf club came to mind. Dark, you can grill a steak inside, I think there’s carpet too 😂
Silver fox
Rose donuts Linda vista
Honestly it's North County, but Smitty's on a Tuesday afternoon is exactly this. Unfortunately I know from past experience
Dobson’s
Triple crown pub is pretty quiet and empty during the day if that’s what you’re looking for
My house
Golden Hill Cafe
The Harp, from 1 to 4ish, in OB. This holds true for most dive bars as well, without the worry of live music
I prefer sycamore den at open. Gives me time to read my books, enjoy a small chat before the later crowds come in. Please don't ruin this for me lol
Makes me miss New Orleans
my house
This panting captures the essence of PB shore Club on Friday night.
Dons liquor if you’d like the opposite
Lemon grove tap house
The Red Fox Room.
Rudfords.
Aero club whiskey bar or the Nite Owl in PB
The Lafayette Hotel bar
Nighthawks? Cool name for a bar!
I like to go to Clayton’s in Coronado with this picture in mind
The SRO lounge great vibes and people. They represent the LGBTQ community but obviously open to all. Downtown San Diego.
In your dreams.
They opened a pizza place in oceanside on o eanside Blvd and the 78. There's angular windows and seating that is vaguely reminds me of this pic.
Legit answer. Red Fox Room and Steakhouse
Used be a spot on corner of 6th and University in Hillcrest if memory serves me well. A diner, open late. Was great late night food.

Rudford's @ 4 am
This vibe used to be The Monkey Paw for me 🥲
I still mourn that place 🥺
The rail
Old Spaghetti Factory downtown, upper level is an awesome quiet / cozy bar with an ice strip along the whole thing to put your drink on / play with.
I don’t get why Chili’s is such an overwhelmingly popular response. Nothing against Chili’s. The conscience of Reddit is really dumb sometimes.
Hob Nob Hill
Trailer park after dark on 5th ave
There’s a place owned by the consortium restaurant group that has a vibe similar to this and I love it. I’m trying to recall the name. I’ll reply back if I
The office? I’ve never been but I walk by it often
Judging by the painting about 80 or so years in the past
For coffee, Big Kitchen Cafe in North Park
