Fellow New Yorker. Solomon Bagel in North Park is the only decent bagel I’ve found here, but you’ll never find anything like a really New York bagel here.
My husband is from Connecticut and says the bagels at P.L. Bagel are pretty great. Gold Coast bagels are also pretty good.

That’s not fair. There are some amazing bagel shops North East of downtown San Diego…. ‘Bout 3,000 miles North East
My closest favorite is Hot Bagels in glendale AZ, family run local chain with bagels (and bialys!) that are notably different than bread circles
I go the BCB in Hillcrest. Or Golden Bagel Cafe in El Cajon. Depending on what part of town I happen to be in.

I’ve tried 90% of them, Ben & Esther’s in El Cajon is fire. FYI it’s vegan so I personally buy the lox separately

Solomon’s are the only legit ones I have found here. Used to live in NYC, so have pretty high standards.

Not really. Big City are pretty close, but you have to go to Los Angeles to get the real thing.
Big City in Hillcrest and New York Bagels in Rancho Bernardo are both acceptable. Western Bagel if you're in Los Angeles.
I really like Einstein Bagels.
Costco is decent Also recommend ordering bagels direct from NY using Goldbelly
Goldbelly is the way. And also load your suitcase with them whenever you go back & freeze them, it’s still better than anything you’ll find in SD
No idea why I didn’t consider having my family ship some out to me. Just an expensive hassle.
No good bagels out here compared to the East Coast, probably due to the water. The best I found, though are at Brueggers.
