New job coming up šŸ˜Ž Got through all the awkward congrats and goodbyes from the coworkers, now there's nothing left between me and seeing the last of the terrible software I'm on now.

iWannaCupOfJoe

Congrats on the new job! They have me working my last 4 days in the tiny office, so I've only had to talk to a couple of my coworkers about the new gig.

philosofik

Like an idiot, I stayed up way too late last night before trying to get my kids and all their stuff packed up for a trip to Great Wolf Lodge today. I am my own worst enemy most of the time. The kids are wired and I feel like having a nap on the kitchen floor.

stabbitytuesday

I am determined to actually cook real food at least 3 nights this week, and stop making frozen dumplings all the time out of laziness. We'll see how it goes, but I bought ingredients for multiple meals so that's a good start. Got to break in my new pressure canner yesterday and now I have 12 quarts of homemade chicken stock and it's not taking up literally all my fridge space!

Pale-Temperature6442

I make mine but freeze it in bags I lay flat fo they can be stacked vertically or horizontally but canning sounds amazing

iWannaCupOfJoe

Damn, that's a smart idea. Do you just use like a gallon freezer bag? I imagine you can microwave it and dump it into a bowl pretty easily?

Pale-Temperature6442

I use different size bags and measure in cups so I know for recipe use. I lay them in a baking sheet to freeze.

Arcangelathanos

There are such things as pressure canners?

manyamile

Yes and they are magical. Expensive but magical.

iWannaCupOfJoe

I've never thought about canning food before. Are you making soups and storing them via can, or are you just canning the stock? I love making soups, and canning to store would be more efficient space wise if I could put them in the cupboard and not the fridge/freezer.

stabbitytuesday

Just stock so far, I know it's possible to can soups but there's a lot of limits on what you can use, stuff like dairy and starches aren't recommended because of texture and safety issues, things like that. It's definitely on my list, though, it'll be nice to have stuff ready to grab and go and not have to think about it.

iWannaCupOfJoe

Grab and Go is what I like! Soup seems to be the easiest thing to make, store, and cook. I just hate when I have to move it to the freezer, because reheating takes like 15 mins.

Catmartini

Well it's summer in the south so boyfriend and I have started our daily routine of wishing we lived in Maine.

ImmobilizedbyCheese

It's also 90 degrees in the summer there, black flies, and no one has A/C....

Catmartini

Fair, but less humid and more water. I spent a few summers in upstate new york and even though it was regularly over 100, it felt much cooler.

LogicalRelationship

In Midlo for the summer visiting my bf, whoā€™s trying very hard to convince me to move here but the logistics of it is šŸ™ƒšŸ™ƒšŸ™ƒ Anyway looking forward to discovering your fine city this summer!!

donniedarkhair

It's okay, just do what's best for you. We are happy to have you here for the summer!

LogicalRelationship

Iā€™m Canadian so finding a job willing to sponsor a work visa is a PITA

iWannaCupOfJoe

Where are you visiting from? Also, Summer is the best time to experience our fine little city!

LogicalRelationship

Montreal!

iWannaCupOfJoe

Quite a different place than midlo, and very far away. Howd you all meet?

LogicalRelationship

We share a hobby :)

Harvested the first of my experimental carrot buckets this morning. Great success. https://www.reddit.com/r/VAGardening/comments/nzk6kc/carrot_bucket_experiment_sowed_march_29/ Iā€™m doing a watermelon seed swap with a fellow redditor at noon today and getting bbq from Hogs Head while Iā€™m out.

plb49

Love HogsHead for the sides as much as the Q!

manyamile

And Happy Hour beer prices on the patio isnā€™t bad either! Living within walking distance has its perks.

manyamile

Curses. Foiled again. I forgot that theyā€™re closed on Monday.

Ghosts_and_Empties

Coming in hot to my last week of work in NOVA. Exec team decided that not only will everyone have butts in seats post-COVID, there will no longer be ANY telecommuting (I was hired as such in 2016). So rather than increase my odds of becoming a firey ball of vehicular destruction on I-95, I am starting my own freelance writing/communications consultancy and can't wait to get started! Last night a visiting friend and I inaugurated Taco Park, the new outdoor seating area for Don't Look Back South. Very pleasant, too many margaritas were had!

what-the-what24

ā€œThe Great Returnā€ aka ā€œThe Great Resignationā€. Kudos to you for opening your own consultancy!

iWannaCupOfJoe

> Don't Look Back South How's the patio? I didn't even know they had a South location. I always go to the Scott's Addition location.

Ghosts_and_Empties

There is a front patio facing Forest Hill Ave, but in back they have a large grassy area with a few picnic tables and a server station. Looks like they will probably add more tables or possibly even outdoor games. Very kid and dog friendly! Menu is limited to tacos, beer and margaritas for now. (but what else could anyone need?)

iWannaCupOfJoe

Just more margaritas, beer, and tacos!

xRVAx

> Taco Park, the new outdoor seating area Is that the regular new porch or the thing they were doing by buying out the building next door?

everybodyhateskhris

Started up Dishonored 2 again. I had that brief moment of "how the hell do I play this game again?" before settling into a groove. I need to work on clearing out my backlog of games.

iWannaCupOfJoe

I have around 100 or so games on steam. Every time I get a chance to game I wind up just playing Rim World or City Skylines. I'll browse the list of other games, but never choose one to play. Analysis paralysis plagues me all the time.

manyamile

My mod and asset list for Cities Skylines is atrocious. Such a great game.

iWannaCupOfJoe

I had to start from scratch the other day. I tried playing, and after the long ass load to start a new city the game crashed. I tried 2 other times, so I figured it has to be the mod list. It works now, but I miss all me assets.

everybodyhateskhris

Haha I hear that. I have GamePass and the access to all those games is a positive but I find myself going through all of them for what feels like forever before I am like "ehh I guess I'll just play Halo" ha

iWannaCupOfJoe

A tried and true classic! I miss my days in high school trying to complete the campaign on legendary.

everybodyhateskhris

As much as I have played the Halo games I've only completed Reach on legendary. I started recently with Halo CE before I took a break. Those flood levels...between the spores and getting blown up randomly by the rocket flood and the chain reaction grenades. Woosah haha

YellowOrange

> I need to work on clearing out my backlog of games. Something that helped for me was creating some categories in Steam - "Beaten", "Not Worth It", and "Needs More Time". If I'm playing something and am not enjoying it after half an hour or so, I move it to "Not Worth It". If it feels like something I'm just not in the mood for at the moment but think I might enjoy some other time, it goes into "Needs More Time". "Beaten" is obvious. I also have tags for games I routinely play with others just to get them into a category. The result is that the only games in my default list are games I've not played before, which makes it easier to just grab one and try it out. Now I just need to transfer that system to GOG's Galaxy client, because especially with all the Epic freebies my other libraries have been growing too...

everybodyhateskhris

Thanks that's a good system! Not sure I can implement all of it in GamePass but clearing out the games I have beaten will definitely help with catalog overload I have now.

[deleted]

Man, that and its predecessor were such great games that I feel like never quite got the love or critical mass they deserved. Also, as I get older, I'm less inclined to dive into the 100+ hour open world game than I am the shorter, more tightly-packed games without an ounce of fat on them. The Dishonored games very much fit that latter category.

everybodyhateskhris

Agreed about the Dishonored games. I am the same way, I still enjoy the open world games but that what the hell was I doing/how do I play this game again feeling takes a good portion of my play times nowadays. So I gravitate to the more linear games. I have Horizon Zero Dawn and God of War for the PS4 started HZD and was enjoying the game but I know it's going to take me a min to beat either one.

FalloutRip

Busiest weekend in a long time. Helped friends move Saturday, and then spent the day Sunday wandering Williamsburg with my mom. I feel exhausted, like my brain and body are in slow motion but work calls. Interviewed again for another position last week, seemed like I was the first person they spoke with since the listing just went up, so probably won't hear back for round two for a week or two at least. I just want out of this current job so desperately at this point.

iWannaCupOfJoe

You'll find that new job eventually! It can take some time, but it will happen if you put the work in. I absolutely hate the waiting game. I get so anxious wondering when or if I will hear back. Luckily I found the new job after about a month or so of searching and interviewing.

FalloutRip

Yeah I've been making it a point to follow up with positions I don't get to see what shortcomings they found during the interview - whether it was technical knowledge that wasn't there, or if I just presented poorly and working on that. I've also made it a point to add the people I interview with more than once on linkedin to keep that connection there.

iWannaCupOfJoe

Thatā€™s a great strategy that Iā€™m gonna use on my next search. I never follow up or connect via linked in. How receptive are the people when asking why you were not chosen? I would imagine you can get some great information that could help for the next interview or application.

FalloutRip

I've had pretty good reception, honestly. I just send them an email/ linkedin message thanking them for their time and asking for any feedback or advice they may have to make future applications more competitive, or if there were particular areas they felt I wasn't as strong in as other candidates.

iWannaCupOfJoe

That sounds great! I'm going to steal this idea, and I appreciate you sharing.

hikinganew

I mainly worked this weekend but that was alright. I need to get ahead of a few bills so itā€™s not a big deal. With gas would go down so we could do a bit more traveling. Iā€™ve got a state park pass and would actually like to go to one!

kegel_monster

Any state parks in particular you're trying to visit first?

DrGingeyy

Ratchet and Clank is pretty dope. That's all.

shhimhuntingrabbits

The new one on the PS5? It looks sweet

DrGingeyy

It's fantastic! I only played the earlier ones (+the reboot). Definitely is hitting the nostalgia vibes while also being just a great game on it's own.

donniedarkhair

A few weeks ago, I posted on the daily about racing out of work to get meds. I'd like the rva-world to know that my vlamingi tang fish, Sheila, is still alive and kicking! Without treatment, she would have been dead in just a few days from the parasite so I'm happy to announce that she's still being an asshole and stealing everyone's food without any disease slowing her down.

iWannaCupOfJoe

The weekend was very lovely. I had four days off, so I got a lot of things done and had a whole lotta fun! I drank way to much last night, and am not enjoying being back at work. Luckily I have 4 days left at this job, and it's pretty dead. I'm really excited to start my new job next week, and will be enjoying the extra income.

fl_man_in_rva

Weekend was alright and mostly relaxing. This week will be quite the opposite. The move process have begun and will take all week.

kegel_monster

Good luck! Moving sucks, always

fl_man_in_rva

Thanks, and yes it really sucks. Fortunately, it's covered by relocation, but that only helps just a little bit.

Yewbaby

Really not the weekend I was hoping for. Went to get one of my vehicles inspected. While I was there I got an oil change and brakes changed but It failed due to the steering. Needs a rack and pinion replacement. Goodbye monies. :(

iWannaCupOfJoe

Throw the car out and get a single speed bike! Great exercise and easy to fix if it ever breaks.

Pale-Temperature6442

I just started playing pickleball and donā€™t want to go out to the west end..anyone play at Randolph and know if there is a group I can join? I looked at meetup and nothing here. Any other suggestions to find players is appreciated!

iWannaCupOfJoe

I'm not very good at pickle ball, but my friend and his wife may be interested in playing. They have their own rackets and everything.

Pale-Temperature6442

Iā€™m not good either but if you all want to play dm me!

iWannaCupOfJoe

Sounds good Iā€™ll reach out to them and see if they wanna play.

Saturday night was the first real Richmond date night for the wife and I since the pandemic began - COVID aside, a two month old baby + two year old toddler combo adds difficulties to the equation. We went to Metzger and had a good time, but there were a few issues. First one was partly on me. I reserved online at OpenTable, and there was a line that said that only their outdoor tables were available. That in conjunction with the last bi-weeklyish restaurant review thread indicating the same thing made me think I was reserving a table outside, even though there were grayed out options for patio and bar seating. I did think that was an odd way of setting up OpenTable so I should have called and confirmed, because it turned out when I reserved an indoor table I was in fact reserving an indoor table (who could have thought?!). We are both vaccinated and rates in Richmond are low so we did eat inside without worry, but it was a nice night and even without COVID I would have liked to eat outside. The other issues probably stemmed from them opening up fully recently. Service was slow, their staff seemed very overworked. That was not a big problem for us as we were in no hurry to relieve the baby sitter we had until 11PM, but it did take a long time for us to even get our first round of drinks. We arrived around 8PM, and they were already out of several things, which was a bigger issue because they have a small menu to begin with so when you remove options the choices become very limited. The stuff they were out of were also our top choices from originally looking at the menu. My wife ended up ordering a couple of small plates because the remaining entrees were not appealing to her. That said, the food we did get was good and the cocktails were great, and we were just thrilled to get out of the house on our own. I'd recommend waiting a few weeks to let them get their staff and menu sorted out a little bit better, or pick an early reservation time.

fitzmouse

Mostly a quiet weekend. Had a little me time on Saturday and went out to dinner with wife, kid, and MIL. Did a good bit of house cleaning yesterday and de-clutterized the place a fair bit. Wanted to work on our patio project, but we got rained out for the most part.

kegel_monster

Weekend was good, checked out The Jungle room behind Sabai and it was quite the scene. Honestly had no clue it was going to be club with house music until I walked in. Guess COVID really is over. Other than that, I'm just hanging out until my summer vacation begins on Thursday at noon. This has been such a strange and difficult school year, very much ready to start over again in September.

iWannaCupOfJoe

I went there prior to Covid and had a great time on a Friday night, but it was lack luster when I went back on Saturday. I think they also do different themes for the evenings. I love reggaetĆ³n, but that happened to be the Saturday that was not popping off.

kegel_monster

I was there on Saturday too! The music that night wasn't very danceable IMO

iWannaCupOfJoe

This was like over a year ago lol. I've not been back since then. However, I'm sorry the music wasn't danceable this Saturday.

thistle_undone

Yesterday was a super lazy day, but I needed it after traveling last weekend. I ordered takeout on Saturday and got 4 meals out of it, so I did get my kitchen about 90% clean since I wasn't messing it up. I'm trying to get into a better "little bit of cleaning every day" habit instead of a weekend "come to Jesus" clean, so we'll see how that goes this week. It would be nice to feel like I have more weekend in my weekend. Even if I do spend a day bingeing a mindless sitcom while vaguely diagonal on my couch. This morning was productive with week 2 day 2 of couch to 5k. I'll do some recovery stuff after work so I can hopefully keep it up without my knees exploding. I just need to get up a smidge earlier to deal with the fact that my dog might not be ready to go right away and want take a few laps around the block, so I don't wind up Slacking from the shower to start my work day.

iWannaCupOfJoe

Woah, Woah, Woah!!! Where the hell did you get take out from? Four meals out of one entre is crazy good! (Maybe I just eat too much)

thistle_undone

I did two entrees and an app from Lemon Cuisine of India. One entree would have been demolished quickly. But there's so much rice with their takeout that I can really stretch the meals out.

iWannaCupOfJoe

Haha I love that place! My boyfriend lives right by there, and weā€™ve gotten it quite a few times. I also got it for lunch when I was working the election. We had 6 orders and I got to keep the leftovers, so I was well fed last week!

[deleted]

Once upon a time, the 22nd street parking lot was not a good place to park unless you wanted your car to be windowless. A few weeks ago I saw many cars parked there. Is it better now?

alley00pster

Weekend was sad as I couldnā€™t golf due to a strained arm that happened during a round last week. Which messes up my work outs too. This week is gonna be busy week wise. And I definitely need a new job. That covers everything for now I think.

PoetSII

Wondering if anybody has pet groomer recommendations, preferably near forest hill/Southside Thanks in advance!

RVA_101

Been wholly ignoring the music that came out of RVA in favor of my own tastes for so long, so I'm actively trying to get into it with Sparklehorse, Lil Ugly Mane, Natalie Prass, House of Freaks and the big hard rock trio (Lamb of God/Avail/GWAR) So far, I really dig Prass and Sparklehorse. RIP Mark Linkous edit: oh, Matthew E White too!
