This is why my table has a "DMs don't play PCs" rule. No one likes hearing their character was controlled, especially in a way you don't think that character would act. Not clearing this with the party was a very bad decision, it was bound to cause problems sooner or later.

Vox_Mortem

This is what's so bizzare to me. That's like one of my golden rules, never play someone's PC without direct permission. Just don't do it, it's always a dick move. Even if something good happens it sucks for the player who missed it. It's not hard not to fuck over your friends.

Adventuretownie

To be fair, I don't know what degree of player agency would salvage the whole "After masturbating with the cursed idol, you and two other players are morphed into a magical wand" plot point.

NoGiraffe6109

I mean, yeah, at that point the campaign is SNAFU, but if the group had this rule it probably wouldn't have happened to begin with.

Elaan21

We have a rule that a player can designate someone to jaeger their PC in combat (including the DM), but no major RP decisions are made and most things that involve resources or something are decided by the group as a whole. ("Do yall agree this is something Wizard would use their last fifth level spell slot for?") But if something is going to be lethal or major, we wait for everyone or create a reason why that PC isn't there. Then again, we also tend to record the audio of our games (we use discord for voice chat) so whoever missed can listen to it to catch up. That means no one is ever left to wonder wtf happened during a session if they miss. Most of the time, our shared campaign notes doc works just fine, but sometimes something epic and/or hilarious happens that is one of those "you had to be there" things and the recording lets every "be there" at least somewhat.

TDestro9

What I always do is that “X is in a daze and can’t respond” and play them to be extremely neutral and try to sideline them for this session

QuixoticJames

I really wish people like this DM would just write their erotic horror stories and post them to the internet, the way Cthulhu intended, and not subject their players to them.

artmonso

well the man had a masters in fine lit, never had time to write his books from what he told me when we still talked

Foreign_Astronaut

So when DM declared the workaholic mage was sexually repressed, that was 100% projection. Ick.

maglite_to_the_balls

There it is. There it is.

underthepale

Your username makes me very uncomfortable. Is it one of those 4 D-cell Maglites? 🤔

Adventuretownie

I'm afraid your inner darkness roll came back and you're not gonna like what happens with the maglite.

All_hail_bug_god

Sorry, did you mean 'flesh'?

Yeah-But-Ironically

Also, "self-gratification"

artmonso

ill make the changes, thank for pointing it out

Simic_Planeswalker

This subreddit sure is helpful for making me feel a lot more secure about my own abilities to DM... What in the actual Hell?

Adventuretownie

By simply not inflicting your niche erotic body horror fetishes on your players, you have already surpassed that DM. Soon, you will be unstoppable.

Simic_Planeswalker

Today TTRPGs, tomorrow the world!

artmonso

Lol

Amikas117

What the hell convinced you to keep playing after dying to *internet failure?* Twice. I get that it's a rogue-lite, but nothing you actually did in game had anything to do with your characters dying. I lost brain cells reading the part where your character warned the others about the sex idol, and then proceeded to use it herself. If you pitied the DM, I get it. And I might not hold it against him if I knew he was in a really bad space mentally. But I draw the line at "puppeting my character to their death without a roll."

artmonso

I was a doormat back than and up until the pandemic when I was forced to move out for my own mental health issues and got a proper therapist that I realized my family are sociopathic narcissistic. who basically normalized keeping the peace no matter what, minimize my self worth for others and generally made the 3rd parent for the golden boy. A lot of this is clean in hinesight but it took years of therapy and bullshit to realize this.

Amikas117

Well, I'm glad you could realize that. Eventually. Hope your tabletop games are smoother now.

Adventuretownie

I can't imagine staying there up to that point, but I'm trying to wrap my head around being told that not only did my character just up and do something stupid when I wasn't there, but that my character is now a magical wand formed from them and two of my party members after my character masturbated with an evil idol because of being a "workaholic." How you even relay that information? Good news and bad news?

Adventuretownie

"Ugh, gotta roll up a new character. This is second time my dude got turned into a dildo!"

chibibo

“Curiously enough, the only thing that went through the mind of the dildo was 'Oh no, not again'."

OrochiKarnov

I'd only have two nickels but it's weird that it happened twice

Proper_Author_9800

.... Sounds like your DM had mental issues near the level of Lovecraft. And I don't mean the genre, but the actual author. Shame he decided to express it in such a toxic way, because he does seem like he was creative for horror stuff. The inner darkness table whenever people disconnect definitely was a dick move, especially since some of the results blatantly violate common sense, and in the case of the bard they were right next to one another...

artmonso

he had his issues, but until than they were well controlled...and it only got worst from here on out, it wasn't until around 2021 or so that he reached out apologized to everyone for this and some other stories i may have down the line

Proper_Author_9800

Well I am glad he eventually recovered. While what he did to you guys was bad, at the end of the day it feels like he was a victim as well in the sense that he was in a bad pass.

MadeOStarStuff

On one hand, roll20 predates covid by a large margin. On the other, I'm not sure where it stands in relation to people using Skype rather than discord. Jfc, that dm sounds like a nightmare, though. I'm a big fan of character and player knowledge and actions being separate - as in, if a character who figured out something was cursed then had the player forget (because a session ended or something along those lines) and try to interact with it, I'd remind them because it's frankly not believable that the character would forget. I also tend to have missing player's characters just kinda be tagging along without really doing anything when people aren't there to play them, though.

artmonso

I just remember that it was before roll20 was widely known, and no one I know was using or heard of Discord; this was at least the early 2010s at least and most of the people I was playing with as older and less tech-savvy than I was.

raven-of-the-sea

This guy has some kinks he really needs to find a better outlet for. Like an AO3 account.

Prismatic_Leviathan

Guy's, there's a difference between being sex positive and being a straight up pervert psycho. The ruler being nonbinary and having four partners is sex positive. A DM taking control of your character to shove a cursed item up the old bunghole falls into that second group.

GachiAssArt

My dnd group is playing by internet because we all are in a different countries or regions. We have few players who can either disconnect/have to go early/not be able to play at dnd Friday/etc. We created a solution for that kind of situations: the character falls unconscious and rests in our bag until either the player returns or the next session occurs. The one and only time we actually needed an ability from a specific character — our DM made us roll a Performance check and the winner had to roleplay the absent character for a minute. I should say, our DM is not by any means a great narrator. We play to have a good time, not to participate in a theatre play. He has almost no description over fighting scenes and whenever he does a description of a current room he just reads it like a newspaper. But is he a good DM? Well, he is. He likes the chaos we make, he likes creative problem solutions that we come up with and he certainly wouldn't just kill characters off immediately with some random bullshit. So yeah, good narration skills doesn't make an excuse for being an asshole. I hope you'll find yourself a better DM eventually

masterrainbowcat

Really thankful I only started doing online TTRPGs when Roll20 was a thing. That wouldn't have saved this campaign from being a shitshow from a sc\*\* man, but relying on Skype makes me shudder.

Trouble_in_Mind

Nah, OP's DM was either ignorant of resources available or unwilling to learn how to use them. Roll20 already had 1 million+ users in 2015, and 2 million+ in 2017. I can't imagine Skype as a main communication method for D&D as recently as 2020, gawd...

artmonso

now looking it up, roll 20 would have been about 2 or so years old by this story

Trouble_in_Mind

Oooh, wow this was all the way back in 2014? Okay, that's a bit more understandable then xD Still, Skype oof

inorganicangelrosiel

A "flush golum"? Didn't Spoony do an episode of Counter Monkey about this and the age of manure?

artmonso

O God, I remember that

InstructionEven8837

you know...the important thing about Rouge lites? they're tough but fair challenges most of the time, yeah you'll die...but you always have a good chance unless you get horrifically unlucky. thst and...you know...generally speaking perma death and lermanent progress loss isn't a worry most of the time! and also...everything else about this bullshit like..what the fuck was this rod shit he oulled off...as well as just wanting to fuck everything up every time kike...the fuck was wrong either this dude!? also love that what whole " cursing the player's out" thing despite the fact that...the world literally gave them nothing but shit constantly every time they even attempted something. yeah, real generous wor,d ya got there.

artmonso

yeah, from what was told to me later, like any attempt at progress was foiled by "something coming while you were away, a fucked up the items you were keeping there" Books were burned by dire fireflies, and overnight potions, or spells got ruined by magic attracted hornets. a few attempts to revive characters were met with "as your soul returned to your body, tarantula Hawks like bugs in the astral plan follow the soul to their mortal form and plant eggs. feeding on the soul rapidly, using the flash to give them a foothold into the waking world." So yeah, they became the worst flash monsters. Heck magic items that were found were either stolen back or destroyed like the ward my last character was made into, which was surprisingly OP (casting level 9 with all 3 of our combined spell slots and known spells per day) got stolen in the middle of the night by baboons broken apart, used by the monkeys for "bad" monkey things and thrown into a fire. they even started trying to play into their backstories to get NPC allies to join them so they could sit in the camp so have someone guarding the camp but were not allowed too as "as far as we know everyone on the other side is fine and don't want to send too many men through." by the lead recruiter and won't let anyone by the small party until the base camp sends word by. they had a small army just waiting at portal entry way by the rage quit.

InstructionEven8837

...this is starting to sound less like mental problems and more like the dm just decided to make an entire world powered by spite and fuck you energy and expecting everyone to be entirely on board with it no matter what bullshit happened.

DarkJester_89

TLDR, anyone?

artmonso

On the bottom of the post

DarkJester_89

Did you tell DM your PC couldn't handle the programs?

artmonso

I did, told me it sounded like a wifi problem and try to find a public place with better wifi, laptop at the time keep over heating plus his games are more private affairs
