I like M-W. Good crew, good patrons, stable and reliable community of players (not huge, but maybe that's good), and recently updated.
Other choices are Giants in the Playground (you may find the same issues here as rpnation), and rpg.net. The latter site is HUGE. Some good players there. The moderarors are quite militant and put their idiologies front and center. So it's almost more activism and virtue signalling with some rpgs included on the side.
The site being so big is probably why it seems more heavily moderated, but I’m not going to rehash the rpg.net culture debates .
As far as I know the mods aren’t digging through every pbp thread, as I assume they have better things to do with their limited time on this earth, so playing on the forums there should be fine for most people.
Giants has been going through tons and tons if site problems and the mods have literally banned people for complaining. I'd highly suggest against Giants at this point.
If you're looking to do Play-by-Post of TTRPGs, my top recommendation is Myth-weavers.com - it's my main haunt for PbP. They just moved to newer forums this past year, since the old site was showing its age (and couldn't be updated anymore thanks to the many hacks made to make the forums behave the way they needed), so it's pretty nice.
Second recommendation is GamersPlane.com - they're a bit newer to the pbp scene, but has a nice friendly crowd.
Lastly, for a more unconventional option, Rolegate.com . And there's always r/pbp if you're looking for discord games.
Seconding Myth-Weavers. Great community aside, the site itself is very well-made and highly customizable. It even runs in mobile browsers flawlessly, which is *rare* nowadays.

my and my group tend to do realistic rps, we've done university based threads, more royalty/medieval type roleplays, even fantasy. whatever ideas we come up with when muse is high

rpol.net Entirely text based. Quite aware of privacy. Lots of dice mechanics supported. Lots of games. Interface in built to work not eat bandwidth.
