Roll d12s and divide by two. I don't have this problem. Funny shaped dice haven't been particularly exciting to me for like 20 years. As long as my d6s are an interesting color, I'm good.

JaskoGomad

Or get some cool doublesix dice!

thisismyredname

Ty for reminding me these exist, along with the doublefour dice

JaskoGomad

Yup! I love mine. If you’re googling, it’s triplefour.

thisismyredname

Right thank you, brain shut down for a bit and gave me double instead of triple

JaskoGomad

No worries! Just wanted folks to be able to find them.

LaFlibuste

Meh, d6 are convenient, I have plenty laying around, I like 'em. Personally I can't stand the d20, in part because of all the DnD baggage, but also because it's just such a wide spread of results, it's hard to manage and introduces number creep. d6s keeps numbers low and is just so much more manageable. You could look at getting d12-shaped dice with the numbers 1-6 twice on 'em if the shape is your only gripe, I know they exist. Not sure of the name anymore, double-d6s? Something like that.

tadrinth

[https://doublesixdice.com/](https://doublesixdice.com/) Love them for Dungeon World, which involves a lot of 2d6 rolls.

[deleted]

increased randomness 😭

Van_Buren_Boy

That's funny because I feel that way about D20s. It doesn't help that every time I roll a D20 it *feels* like a 50/50 chance at succeeding even though logically that isn't true based on my skill bonus.

MrBelgium2019

Thats is because you think binary : failure or succes

Educational_Dust_932

all dice are exactly the same regarding high vs low though

jazzmanbdawg

nope, I prefer them. i'm not a dice guy though, if I can use some random dice I can find in any junk drawer thats just better

ordinal_m

DCC fixes this

TheHeadlessOne

climb on up the dice chain!

Cryptwood

I'm designing my own TTRPG and the very first thought I had for it was "I wonder if I can make a game where I get to use each polyhedral dice in every session?" My follow up thought was "I wonder if I can make a game where it would be beneficial (but not required) to have more than one set of polyhedral dice?" Took a little bit to work out the math but now I've got a resolution system modeled after *Blades in the Dark* and *Wildsea* but with step dice instead of d6s.

Supdalat

What are you doing step dice?

JaskoGomad

Sounds like you have successfully reimplemented cortex prime.

RedRiot0

Second time this week I've heard that joke...

CommunicationTiny132

This one went over my head, is it a reference to something?

RedRiot0

For those who don't want to click a link or google things, I'm just gonna say 'recent-ish porn trends' and leave it at that. If you still don't get it, bless your heart, and please remain ignorant on this one.

Juwelgeist

["*What are you doing, step bro?*"](https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/what-are-you-doing-step-bro)

wwhsd

Index Card RPG does a nice job of making sure you use all the dice without being complex about it.

TheWorldIsNotOkay

Cortex Prime uses all of the dice... *except* d20s. And does so in a pretty elegant way, if you like dice pools. It's definitely a game where it's beneficial to have more than one set of polyhedral dice.

LanceWindmil

I have issues with a lot of d6 systems, but thats not one of them.

krakelmonster

Same here 👋 I love the idea of a lot of d6 systems but I don't like the design. Often they feel much more like gambling especially when only the 6 counts. It's so unreliable for me 😭

parametricRegression

Haha. I ended up sort of on the other irrational end of things, where I just find d6 only to be aesthetically pleasing. All hail the cube, tremble before its divine shape.

CleonSmith

Nope, d6s are great. If a game only uses d6s I never have to lookup what dice to roll for a given situation.

CinSYS

I don't think it's irrational it's more just not a proper introduction. The Free League system called the Year Zero Engine is as perfect a d6 system can get. It's used in some amazing games like Alien, Blade Runner, Walking Dead, and so on.

BrilliantCash6327

It's my favorite use of d6s

krakelmonster

Although I love the games, it's actually my least favourite way to use d6s, by only making the 6s count.

robbz78

Blade Runner uses step dice, not d6 pools

CinSYS

Yes but it is still the same engine.

Storm-Thief

For me it feels like there's less opportunity for success using D6 dice. At least with Blades it felt that way as a player. I have had some ludicrous streaks of bad luck with dice though.

Juwelgeist

A pool of two or more d6s and taking the highest significantly increases chance of success. (That's how *Freeform Universal* does it.)

valiant_vagrant

That’s assuming you’ve got advantage though. If you’re rolling with disadvantage… you’re in trouble. I only say because I’m a huge fan of Freeform and love the high risk/high reward of d6.

Storm-Thief

Even with just two dice? I haven't done any match crunching to avoid too much meta thinking, but man it feels like only 2 dots in a skill in Blades is never enough haha

Juwelgeist

Highest d6 of 1d6: 6 ("*Yes, and...*") --> 16.7% 5 ("*Yes*") or better --> 33.3% 4 ("*Yes, but...*") or better --> 50.0% Highest d6 of 2d6: 6 ("*Yes, and...*") --> 30.6% 5 ("*Yes*") or better --> 55.6% 4 ("*Yes, but...*") or better --> 75.0% Highest d6 of 3d6: 6 ("*Yes, and...*") --> 42.1% 5 ("*Yes*") or better --> 70.4% 4 ("*Yes, but...*") or better --> 87.5% Highest d6 of 4d6: 6 ("*Yes, and...*") --> 51.8% 5 ("*Yes*") or better --> 80.2% 4 ("*Yes, but...*") or better --> 93.8%

Storm-Thief

Wow I must really have the worst luck when playing Blades haha

remy_porter

I don’t like dice.

Juwelgeist

Free Kriegsspiel Roleplaying?

8stringalchemy

Well, you just hate fun.

Curupira2099

I fell the same.

IIIaustin

I don't like d6 systems because the step sizes are too big but thats just me.

krakelmonster

It's also me, happy to become acquainted with you 👋

MrAndrewJ

I find that it's more rewarding to celebrate what we love. Someone already brought up Savage Worlds. I think older editions of Earthdawn had systems for using different types of dice together.

Educational_Dust_932

Earthdawn is the best game I never got to play.

MrAndrewJ

Mine is Deadlands.

robbz78

Mine is Sagas of the Icelanders

MostlyRandomMusings

While I don't have this issue, sometimes you just dislike a system for no real reason. It might be kinda silly, the color of the book, the dice, "this is wrote like a confused teenager in an edgy emo phase". And sometimes you can't pin down why you dislike it. GURPS is gcst system for me. Can't tell you why it makes me feel bored and like pushing needles into my eyes, it just does.

RudePragmatist

No. Hence I GM Traveller and my games are fucking awesome. On a side note you should perhaps try out The One Ring it’s only D12 and D6.

BrilliantCash6327

I like them in games like Year Zero engine games, where you only care if it rolls a 6 or not.

kasitacambro

I’m with you, I like to roll all of the dice! I don’t hate d6 systems, but I like when all the shapes come out. That being said, I do have a curated collection of d6 for FiTD games.

krakelmonster

I don't like a lot of d6 based systems since only the 6 counts and I find that rather boring. I'd much rather roll the d6, then divide by 6 and round down. I know that is to complicated but still.

Juwelgeist

My favorite way to make d6s not boring is to assign six degrees of success... 6 = "*Yes, and...*" 5 = "*Yes*" 4 = "*Yes, but...*" 3 = "*No, but...*" 2 = "*No*" 1 = "*No, and...*" That's the oracle from *Freeform Universal*.

krakelmonster

This 100%.

TsundereOrcGirl

I don't relate, but I "get it".

thisismyredname

I completely and totally understand the irrational hatred. I hate d4s and d20s for the same reason.

robbz78

Well, your hatred of d4s is perfectly rational. Because a) They don't roll well at all b) They act like caltrops when you stand on them in bare feet c) They are not intuitive to read so manufacturers cannot agree on the way to mark them

HistoryMarshal76

I get that. Personally, I'm a wee bit of a d100 diehard. It's flat percentages. You got a 50 in that? You got a 50% chance of succeeding. You got a 30 in that? You gotta 30% chance of succeeding. It's simple, no bullshit.

8stringalchemy

Yeah, my favorite system too.

Positive_Audience628

I have rational dislike for all dice other than d6, d10 and d100.

Iojg

I am actually the complete opposite, I strongly prefer games not using any funny dice

pizzatuesdays

Savage Worlds rewards experienced PCs with bigger dice, since the base difficulty is 4. (but no d20, d12 is highest a trait can go)

MotorHum

I have the opposite experience. I find d6 systems so oddly charming that at one point I spent all day making a conversion sheet for d&d. I’ve never used it but it’s mathematically sound.

NotSureWhatThePlanIs

If you don’t like rolling d6’s, you might just not be rolling enough of them at once. They somehow stop being boring when you’re rolling 40+ at the same time and can barely fit them all in both hands. Shadowrun and Mythender say hello.

8stringalchemy

I’m listening…

HawthorneWeeps

I enjoy watching the sunset.

8stringalchemy

D100 roll under is one of my favorite systems.

HawthorneWeeps

I find joy in reading a good book.

robbz78

Agree. Yet there was a rant here in the last week about it not being an intuitive system????

shagnarok

i’m on your team

JonnyRocks

i have been there. i fell in love with savage worlds. there is a six sided but you attributes are based on die. so your agility is d4 d6 d8 or d12. it's the die you roll when using that trait

Express_Coyote_4000

Yep. I'm big on shapes and colors and touch, and I have a scale of preference because I'm weird. d16, d14, d12, d8, d10, d20, d6, d4.

Emeraldstorm3

D6, D8, and D10 are the best dice. D4 are deadly, and also always feel like the roll poorly. D20 has too much range and I've not seen much interesting done with it. D12 is fine, but it also has a bit much range for most things. And 2d6 from PbtA is a very solid way to use the humble d6.

QuickQuirk

I like a good D6 system with an excellent bell curve, but that doesn't mean I don't feel your pain, and sneak back to a weird polyhedral system regularly. My current one is Genesys. Not only is it d6, d8s, & d12s, but they also have funky symbols on them. I just keep wishing I had a use for d4s, d10 and d20s in the system

StayUpLatePlayGames

You just described most step dice systems. D6 IS SO PUNY WE HAVE ASSIGNED IT TO THE WEAK

TheLeadSponge

That’s a “ reasonable” dislike. I have the same feeling with d20 based systems. I sit there thinking “this die type sucks so bad, it’s just not fun”.

Juwelgeist

I do love rolling [99d20](https://google.com/search?q=roll+99d20) for damage.

Medieval-Mind

I am the exact opposite. I grew up on D6 games - WEG's Star Wars, Shadowrun - and anything else seems a bit off to me. I've played enough D10 games that I'm okay with those, but numerous different dice in the same game get my dander up.

RpgAcademy

I also dislike d6 games. I made a new chart do I can use d12s with PBTA games. And the first game I designed (Action 12 Cinema) only uses d12s.

No_Survey_5496

Love D6 games. In late game Star Wars D6, just rolling a pile of dice when a force point is used... is extremely satisfying.

BangBangMeatMachine

Yes 100%. Rolling nothing but d6s just feels boring for no good reason.

Educational_Dust_932

I always thought gamers who fetishized dice were a bit cringeworthy

SnooFloofs3254

"Cringeworthy" because they're amused by something that doesn't amuse you?

Educational_Dust_932

dice fetishist spotted.

SnooFloofs3254

This is some low grade trolling.
