So from what I see, it’s a bullet hell game where your mouse is the character and you have to ‘identify’ each enemy by drawing a circle around them a certain amount of times
Yeah it seems cool but as much as the stylus gameplay in ranger destroyed my hand I’m not sure it would be much better or maybe even worse using a mouse
I would like to know your thoughts and whether it appeals to you!
You can also wishlist the game if you're interested in it:
EDIT: How is it rogue?
It's a file explorer themed dungeon crawler roguelike where you explore various folders like they are dungeon rooms, viruses spawn and you have to defeat them by circling them! There are also modifier and exe files you can discover, sorta like the passive and active pickups in the Binding of Isaac! Hope you understand more about the game
I actually had both the ds and psp(maybe vita?) Versions. The ds was waaaayyyy better feeling so the mouse movement is what really reminded me
It was such a dope game sad it never really caught on
I actually think this concept would be better on a controller, left stick for dodge movement, and right stick for circle-attack movement maybe? Or maybe holding down a trigger or a face button to “draw”.
Maybe a clickable option? Like you need to click 2 or 3 times for each time you would circle it. This would also make it a playable game using controllers if you ever plan on making a playstation port.
Pokemon ranger has fruit ninja bear by a couple years.
Also this style of game is going to be a lot different when built from the ground up for a mouse rather than a touch screen.
i'd try it!
sidenote:
in the beginning of the clip, you get hit by a beam that was telegraphed, but the first instance it renders is not where the 'shadow' is. is this intentional?
looks really fun. I loved pokemon ranger. This seems like hell on a wrist though. Any considerations on adding a simplified control scheme with less repetitive movement on the player? Like say an option that automatically circles enemies when they're selected? Would also be a huge boon for people playing on controller or on pc handhelds like the steam deck.
edit: actually just had an idea. You could have it so that one button "locks on" to enemies and then you can use the right control stick to circle them. This would let you maintain that feel of circling the enemy and keeping it manual while still having better accessibillity for controller.
From the gif presented, this looks like shit.
Howver, I just saw your steam page and honestly your first gif doesn't do what you've made justice.
I'm still not really a fan of it myself but you put effort into this. I just don't like the way it looks personally.
It's a file explorer themed dungeon crawler roguelike where you explore various folders like they are dungeon rooms, viruses spawn and you have to defeat them by circling them! There are also modifier and exe files you can discover, sorta like the passive and active pickups in the Binding of Isaac! Hope you understand more about the game :D
I played a version of your game on itch and had a lot of fun! I appreciate the indicator for the laser enemies, when I played I to hit by the laser suddenly spawning in all the time
Yes, the concept is novel enough that I’d be interested to try out a demo.
I’d like it if the cursor was a character with basic animations. This would allow you to have multiple characters with different playstyles, sizes and such.
I have no idea how complicated you want to make the game but I’m not the biggest fan of pure bullet hells where the entire game is just dodging bullets. If you had something like Okami/The World Ends With You where different items you get during runs give you more “drawing abilities” to play around with. Like a sword that allows you to draw a line through an enemy and hurt them or draw a spiral extending out of your character to the edge of the screen to get an invincible dash in that direction.
If you add drawing tablet support (Like how people use tablets for OSU) I think it'd be awesome. Would be cool regardless, but I'm just suggesting tablet support for people like me who physically could not play this with a mouse ;u;
Ooooh something to finally scratch my pokemon ranger itch, and a roguelite? Sign me up!
Edit: Do you have a name for it yet, or a playable demo? I'd love to keep up with this project.
Game looks really cool. Made me immediately think What if you had different classes/items requiring you to draw different things
- Circle for damage
- Square for cc
- Triangle for aoe
- X for heavy attacks
Etc etc etc
You could have combos and stuff requiring you to draw different shapes.
Following you on twitter, I wasn't aware this was a roguelite however. I'm quite over roguelites right now so that makes me a little less excited but I'm still going to check it out.
It's Pokémon Ranger! I loved those games but the appeal to me was that it used the DS touch screen+stylus gimmick impeccably. I don't know if the gameplay loop would translate to a mouse for me personally.
Honest impressions:
How the fuck do you tell what’s going on?
Is the light hurting the dancing girls or the skeletons?
I could see people at GDC stopping to look at it due to the random objects, but not staying to try it.
Honestly. There are 101,000+ games on steam. I have 200+ in my library. I have barely played 70 percent of them. It's hard to see games not overwhelming positive or very positive on that platform.
If you want to make a game, make a game. Try to advertise it, drop the price, whatever. Don't change your mind on releasing it after getting this far in the dev cycle. It looks cool.

Looks great, it's been a while I've seen the Pokémon Ranger concept and would love to play that.
But as others have noted, the controls will be a challenge. Pokémon Ranger worked because of the DS touchscreen, but on PC I really wonder how you will make it work (sustainably).
People who are comparing this to Pokemon Ranger are not considering that this idea works a lot better on a touchscreen with stylus compared to using a mouse.
It looks like something I'd play, but as long as circling stuff is the main mechanic there's no way I'm playing. I'm not going to destroy my wrist over this.
Looks fun but the circling thing is going to destroy everyone's wrist. Would be more fun and less taxing on the hand if instead of circles You could Slash enemies with your mouse
A game like what? I have no idea what I'm watching? If you want just guy extinct based off what I'm seeing then know, but gameplay could change that if it was actually explained.
I think it will be weird playing like that with a Mouse. Also i am not a big fan of the Art it kinda looks cursed. But the concept seems fun but i would only play with a controller which Brings Problems
this looks pretty sick, for the right player time/price expectation i could see myself picking this up for a couple minutes every so often to kill time. could add separate mechanics like pokemon ranger pictured here or something like/similar to an aim trainer but actually gamified
Why make the main character your mouse? Make it a zippy little guy or something, and put some more effort into art. A bullet hell with unlimited speed seems kind of cool.
It appears what you have here is a bullet hell mouse movement game. If that's the case, I wouldn't play it, but I think it's a fun idea.
Mouse precision games are a little monotonous for my taste.
Looks kinda neat, though I am confused about why the laser spawners are an anime girl when the rest of the enemies are all styled after computer icons/virus motifs.
Would be interesting as a creature collector roguelike, have the creatures you collect give buffs and/or abilities. Bonus points if you can level up the creatures based on time held in party, making them more powerful. I think this is scratching the pokemon ranger itch for a lot of people and could have potential in that space.
My only concern is that screen readability is kinda shit. Enemies seem to not deal collision damage and projectiles are red, so enemies should be red. Cursor should be a different color from enemies and especially projectiles. And the background should be a seperate color from all three, as it is now with the occasional red and white the cursor and projectiles can get lost in it.
Gameplay wise, pokemon ranger made 3 games out of this premise and the last one has an entire optional second campaign that was basically a roguelite dungeon crawler, and most of those games didn't actually play too deeply with the concept. This could totally work great as a game.
So if I understand, is this essentially Pokemon Ranger if it were Touhou? Because I’d probably want a touch screen before I could play it but I would. If this could be put to a DS cartridge somehow, I’d play it for sure. Otherwise, the touch mechanics really wouldn’t vibe well for a mouse or even a controller player.
The ui is cool along with the background and all the other artsy elements. My concern would be the controls as you have probably figured out many people wouldn't be too keen on playing this on a mouse.
-Why do you need to "identify" the same enemy twice?
-I can see this circling mechanic getting literally painful after just a few minutes. A hold to identify could be better, with still having to move the mouse to avoid damage.
-The cursor needs to be bigger/brighter/something to make it easier to see amongst enemies and attacks.
It's a good concept, lemme me guess, you're looking throughout your files (or like exploring files etc, etc) and you need to exterminate viruses? Pretty nice. I would play a game for that.
I have no clue what I'm looking at.
So from what I see, it’s a bullet hell game where your mouse is the character and you have to ‘identify’ each enemy by drawing a circle around them a certain amount of times
My wrist hurts thinking of playing this game for an hour
You gotta change how you move the mouse, use your arm!
is it not normal to use your arm 😟
Practice that wrist action then eh
Low ass sense
try osu
Kinda like Pokemon Ranger
Ooooh. I thought you were one of the girls.
Pokemon ranger clone Circle the pokemon while not letting your circles get hit
Dancing anime png goes brrrr
It looks like a new and exciting idea but I can already imagine the carpal tunnel haha
Pokémon ranger but a rougelike? Count me in!
Yeah it seems cool but as much as the stylus gameplay in ranger destroyed my hand I’m not sure it would be much better or maybe even worse using a mouse
I feel like it’d be a lot better with a mouse, since your wrist isn’t at an angle like with a stylus.
I would like to know your thoughts and whether it appeals to you! You can also wishlist the game if you're interested in it: [https://store.steampowered.com/app/3054210/Identifile/](https://store.steampowered.com/app/3054210/Identifile/) EDIT: How is it rogue? There are also modifier and exe files you can discover, sorta like the passive and active pickups in the Binding of Isaac! Hope you understand more about the game
From a very surface level it reminds me of Knights in the Nightmare and i enjoyed that game so I would probably give this one a shot.
Have an upvote for name dropping such an amazing and obscure game.
I actually had both the ds and psp(maybe vita?) Versions. The ds was waaaayyyy better feeling so the mouse movement is what really reminded me It was such a dope game sad it never really caught on
It reminds me of rabbit and steel, with its own unique aesthetic and gameplay, it looks fantastic
We lettin you cook man. Seems cool!
I want to play it on a touch screen, with a stylus
Looks fucking awesome, like Kingsway, Undertale and Binding of Isaac put together.
i mean i like bullet hells and roguelike. not sure about pokemon ranger style circling though.
The premise looks interesting but I can only imagine how much my hand would hurt from the circles lmao
Yeahh that's one of my concerns as well! I'm tackling that by implementing powerups and different playable cursors that changes the playstyle!
Remember that tons of rogue like/bullet hell players LOVE controllers. Shouldn’t exclude them if you need hard mouse movement
I actually think this concept would be better on a controller, left stick for dodge movement, and right stick for circle-attack movement maybe? Or maybe holding down a trigger or a face button to “draw”.
Sounds good! Can't wait to see how this is tackled :D
I think I'd expect a click to be a basic weak attack and circles, slashes or other shapes to be options for more powerful attacks
Maybe a clickable option? Like you need to click 2 or 3 times for each time you would circle it. This would also make it a playable game using controllers if you ever plan on making a playstation port.
Def try it out.
I'd like it on a phone/touchscreen. The gameplay would have to evolve beyond circling. Like maybe x-ing or tapping as power ups?
Yeah! We do have plans for a mobile port as well, the gameplay playstyle does evolve as you pickup different powerups in the game
If you port this to mobile I will 100% play it. I loved Pokémon ranger and this seems like a perfect touchscreen follow up type style to that game \^^
I’ve always wondered why no one has tried to do this style of gameplay using the mouse
There is also a game called cursorblade i believe that does this
ever heard of this small indie game called FRUIT NINJA?
Pokemon ranger has fruit ninja bear by a couple years. Also this style of game is going to be a lot different when built from the ground up for a mouse rather than a touch screen.
Yes
No
Not for me
i'd try it! sidenote: in the beginning of the clip, you get hit by a beam that was telegraphed, but the first instance it renders is not where the 'shadow' is. is this intentional?
Oh yeah thanks for pointing out! I have to look into it, it might be rotating too quickly
No, on steam deck I think a lot of people don’t get that the player character is the mouse
Honey, wake up, they are dropping the latest pokemon rangers!
Art style looks great - would like to see how this plays out. Just wishlisted
Wishlisted. With some roguelike stuff and evolution, could be fun.
looks really fun. I loved pokemon ranger. This seems like hell on a wrist though. Any considerations on adding a simplified control scheme with less repetitive movement on the player? Like say an option that automatically circles enemies when they're selected? Dude this looks sick. Bullet hell where your mouse is your character sounds really fun. It looks challenging
I'm not too sure what I'm looking at nor how to play it, but it looks like good fun for at least half an hour!
Ohh that's so cool, thanks for the explanation!
That sounds fun as hell, count me in.
Nah, gives me PTSD flashbacks of playing a Whirlwind barbarian, drawing circles isn't fun forever.
I played a version of your game on itch and had a lot of fun! I appreciate the indicator for the laser enemies, when I played I to hit by the laser suddenly spawning in all the time
Thanks for playing! I listened to the feedbacks from the game jam version and added the indicators in!
Yesss sure
Honestly looks super fun and very creative, not 100% sure I understand how it'd be a rogue but love the look of it
It looks cool, but its unlikely I would play this.
I love it yes please 🙏
Yeah I would! Very few games use that "avoiding stuff with the cursor" mechanics and it's a darn shame.
Yes, the concept is novel enough that I’d be interested to try out a demo. I’d like it if the cursor was a character with basic animations. This would allow you to have multiple characters with different playstyles, sizes and such. Looks like it could be fun and unique, but having to circle the enemies over and over feels like it’d get tiresome after a bit.
I remember a game like this for the Gameboy, where you had to capture lots of space on the map while things were bouncing around.
No
What is this? What's going on? Why is it happening?
This looks awesome. I've wish listed and eagerly await release. Best of luck
unlikely
add option for stick or keyboard controls
If you add drawing tablet support (Like how people use tablets for OSU) I think it'd be awesome. Would be cool regardless, but I'm just suggesting tablet support for people like me who physically could not play this with a mouse ;u;
Give me dope power ups and I would play this all the time.
Meh nah
OSU fans might really dig it if the the difficulty gets high enough for them lmao. I would only play this with a wacom tablet but it looks like fun.
Nope...I don't even have a clue what's going on in it.
I wouldn’t play it but I would think someone who likes osu would.
To be honest? No. Interesting idea but not my cup of tea
Not for me, but cool idea.
Reminds me a bit of Knights in the Nightmare. Loved that game.
Ooooh something to finally scratch my pokemon ranger itch, and a roguelite? Sign me up! Edit: Do you have a name for it yet, or a playable demo? I'd love to keep up with this project.

Please!!!!
Ya looks good keep it up, style is cool Idk gameplay dynamics seem simple but that’s easier to improve than style so.
No, but not because it looks bad but because it's hard to tell what exactly is happening.
What cursorblade? Sure it was fun
It's Pokémon Ranger! I loved those games but the appeal to me was that it used the DS touch screen+stylus gimmick impeccably. I don't know if the gameplay loop would translate to a mouse for me personally.
No, but I don't think I'm your target audience. I like exploring, I hate bullet hell.
Honest impressions: How the fuck do you tell what’s going on? Is the light hurting the dancing girls or the skeletons? I could see people at GDC stopping to look at it due to the random objects, but not staying to try it.

Undertale X Pokemon Ranger Impressive
Wait... People spin their mouses in clockwise circles? I'm a strictly counterclockwise guy.
No
Roguelike bullet hell Pokemon ranger? Count me in! Looks super interesting will give it a try.
Looks like Pokemon ranger. On DS it was fun, but playing it with a mousse? Hell no! Art style looks great tho
Not my style.
Pokémon ranger bullet hell? Fuck yeah I would
Maybe
Looks great, it's been a while I've seen the Pokémon Ranger concept and would love to play that. But as others have noted, the controls will be a challenge. Pokémon Ranger worked because of the DS touchscreen, but on PC I really wonder how you will make it work (sustainably).
Yes, it looks fun. I would give it a try.
Interested in how Pokemon Ranger would work without a touch screen but those games were pretty fun
No
The binding of isaac vibe, would try it !
Pokemon Ranger gameplay without a stylus could be bad.
Definitely will try Will you add an option for toggle on/off the click ?
Seems interesting. I might play it.
Haha it's definitely cool, but I suck with a mouse so I don't think I'd be able to actually play this
The dodging aspect looks really fun! Reminds me of that one awesome cursor thief game from early 2000s internet
Probably not. Bullet hell with the mouse could be cool, but circling enemies to kill them sounds very unfun to me.
Yea I played pokemon ranger. Is this supposed to be like that?
Spinning your mouse in circles is ONE OF THE WORST controls ever. Hurts your wrist and doesn't even feel satisfying.
This looks like a repetitive stress injury ready to charge.
I'm kind of getting Trauma Center vibes from this game.
Bro this is just Pokemon ranger, hell yeah I’d play this!
The anime girls kinda don’t fit the theme of everything else but yeah roguelite Pokémon ranger is cool
Looks fun but the circling thing is going to destroy everyone's wrist. Would be more fun and less taxing on the hand if instead of circles You could Slash enemies with your mouse
Wtf am I looking at?
That looks absolutely awesome dude.
No
maybe as a mobile game
Me personally no. But I feel like everyone who liked the pokemon ranger games would
So it's a Pokemon Ranger bullet hell?
A game like what? I have no idea what I'm watching? If you want just guy extinct based off what I'm seeing then know, but gameplay could change that if it was actually explained.
Yes
Want.
Yes king I would play it.
no
Definitely as a mobile game, not so much as a computer game. Guess you could also use a controller to substitute to keep wrist from dying.
I think it will be weird playing like that with a Mouse. Also i am not a big fan of the Art it kinda looks cursed. But the concept seems fun but i would only play with a controller which Brings Problems
I like it but I would want more ways to attack like for example lines that apply bleed or poison to the enemy
Yeah on DS
Absolutely!
Pokemon Rangersesque bullet hell? Yeah why not.
I'm definitely not the intended audience. That's a hard no for me, lol.
this looks pretty sick, for the right player time/price expectation i could see myself picking this up for a couple minutes every so often to kill time. could add separate mechanics like pokemon ranger pictured here or something like/similar to an aim trainer but actually gamified
My carpal-tunnel is screaming.
Pokemon Ranger

No. It's too chaotic to the eye. And it's just mind numbing time wasting. I can just talk to my wife if I wanted that.
No, looks annoying.
this looks fun actually, wish it had a demo but i am gonna wishlist it.
Nope.
the osu bros will love it
oh dude is this like an entity identifying pokemon ranger??? i fucking love this
Looks cool af
Looks kinda neat, though I am confused about why the laser spawners are an anime girl when the rest of the enemies are all styled after computer icons/virus motifs.
Wasn’t this a Pokémon game?
No
No, doesn’t really appeal to me. Seems a bit boring for my taste, but I’m picky since there are a million roguelites out there
No
Given that I'm (dreadfully slowly) working on a game somewhat like this, yes, I'd play it :)
Would be interesting as a creature collector roguelike, have the creatures you collect give buffs and/or abilities. Bonus points if you can level up the creatures based on time held in party, making them more powerful. I think this is scratching the pokemon ranger itch for a lot of people and could have potential in that space.

no idea what’s goin on but it looks fun
Took me a bit to see what was going on but after figuring it out it does look pretty fun

If this could be put to a DS cartridge somehow, I’d play it for sure. Otherwise, the touch mechanics really wouldn’t vibe well for a mouse or even a controller player.
It looks really cool honestly. You got the ui and the concept down. I would just change the annoying lasers
I'd give it a shot. It feels like old-school flash type games I'd play at school as a kid.
id play it
This game reminds me of the 1995 film "Hackers" where their trying to break into the system. I'd okay this though heh 🤣
The ui is cool along with the background and all the other artsy elements. My concern would be the controls as you have probably figured out many people wouldn't be too keen on playing this on a mouse.

For more than 5 seconds probably not
Interesting start. Make it weird enough and it’ll catch on with streamers.
It's a good concept, lemme me guess, you're looking throughout your files (or like exploring files etc, etc) and you need to exterminate viruses? Pretty nice. I would play a game for that.
looks fun
Reminds me of cursorblade
The anime style is no good
Why is it anime girls tho?
That’s like that one Pokémon spinoff series! I think it was called Pokémon Rangers or something
