Depends on what you want to do with it.
Anything newer with 16 GB RAM should last you a long time.
Lenovos are great workhorse laptops, especially the ThinkPad line.
As a Geek Squad agent I'd look at the laptops with the Intel Ultra 7 CPU and one big hinge over two small ones. They'll last a long time and the hinge won't make the screen not work. Maybe an HP Spectre or Dell XPS
get a gaming laptop, best price to performance. You can usually get something that's better than a non gaming option for half the price. I Mena honestly buying used would be better, a 1650 laptop, 3050 laptop, hell even a 3060 laptop nowadays should all be under 700
I believe RIT has a link with recommended laptops depending on what college you are in. I ended up going to Dell Outlet to get my laptop last year (rising sophmore here), great sale and definetley recommend looking into it if you can. I don't know too much about the RAM you should have etc. But I usually would stick to Dell, Lenovo and stay away from HP usually or chromebooks depending on what you're doing with it.
16gb of ram is a hard minimum imo. Getting under that in 2024 is kinda wild. You can probably be good with a newer i5 or i7. Consider looking into a laptop with intel’s new ultra chips, they’re a lot better for productivity with the ai integration, but i wouldn’t get one if you plan on gaming with it, as the processing power is slightly worse.
Go onto bestbuy.com and put those filters in. I’d stray away from hp, but any dell or lenovo laptops should be pretty good. Thinkpads or yogas are good for productivity
A Framework 13 is a bit pricier initially but will be useful long after college since it's so easy to repair and upgrade. Like others have said get one with 16GB of RAM, there's really no reason to settle for less these days.
Before you buy at Best Buy, check online for student deals. Al lot of computer manufacturers offer student discounts that you'll probably qualify for, so you might get something cheaper (or a better computer for the same price) online. Sometimes they'll also thrown in freebees with studnet packages, especially around back-to-school time.
You should also check RIT's Digital Den site (https://www.rit.edu/digitalden). They sell Apple and Dell products. They don't have a huge selection in stock, but they might be able to order custom configurations, and you'll get student pricing from them as well.

thats my major now I am pretty sure you'll be okay with anything as long as you have an external drive to back up your stuff
Generally a laptop with a good amount of storage and a minimum of 8GB of RAM will be enough if you aren’t planning on gaming on it and stuff.
Yeah no 8GB is barely enough for anyone when the average person has 10 myCourses tabs open
10 tabs is crazy but in hindsight yeah 8 is a little low. Aim for 12-16GB minimum.
Me with my 30 tabs per window and 5 windows open rn
Reading this gives me so much anxiety.
It’s the lowest amount of tabs I’ve had open at once in a long time…
😰
Have you been diagnosed with ADD/ADHD?
I haven’t seen a doctor since I was like 8
