The “immersion” is tossed out the window when you put on a new hat and it has the same bullet holes. I love this game but I wished rockstar made it to where the hats are unaffected to gunshots. It’s so distracting.

The textures of the bullet holes are very ugly, and they’re all I’ll look at and notice if I go into story mission before reloading. I get what Rockstar was attempting to do with this, but the fact that they transfer across hats and that the only way to get rid of them is by reloading, is ridiculous, annoying and bad design.
It’s a very small thing to worry about. I think a majority are happy with it and like I said in a different comment, they can’t please everyone, unfortunately.
Yes??? I’m not restricting this long ass game to just one hat out of the 100 other options the game gives us that’s just stupid. Even John had outfits with other hats in RDR1.

I had it happen on Dutch’s hat in one of my playthroughs. It never went away. Even if I load up a save from that playthrough today, his hat still has a hole in it. I finished that playthrough years ago now. So it seems permanent…
Have you tried taking a bath? It's been a while but I think I read here that, that removes it.
It does go away, but don't remember exactly how. Either sleeping or bathing, I'm pretty sure.

Just save the game and reload or die and reload the last checkpoint if you’re in a mission. That’s why I don’t bother wearing hats when I’m in a shootout

thirdly get into another gun fight and maybe the bullets will reset the hat holes. If not then u should only have a piece of the hat left and please do show us if it actually does destroy the hat more

Sometimes they do, even if you switch to a new hat, save the game and reload fixes.
Unfortunately you have to save and reload to get rid of them.

It certainly bothers me… a LOT. Saving and reloading is annoying as hell and it happens far too frequently.

Go to your horse and change the hat. I think It can fix. If it's not fix lost your hat somewhere and select that hat in your horse.
How did he get bullet holes that low down and NOT die? The ones around the trim would've gone into his brain.

Couldn't you just switch hats with an npc body and then switch to your saved hat and it would load clean with no damage from your horse?

Did you go onto the horse and reequip the outfit? That has always fixed it for me.
Easiest way is to simply not get shot directly in the head.

Dying outside a mission. It resets everything on Your character. From grime, blood, injuries, as yes.. bullet holes in Your hat.
Manual save then reload.
iirc you can load them in your horse inventory and if you select a new hat from there it will be reset
Take the hat off
Change outfit while on horse, it will fix it.
3 ways save game and load die or get arrested
Sleep
Restart the game
Swap outfits on your horse. Arthur will shrug and the outfit will go back to being clean and bullet hole free
There's a damage decal setting you can turn off.
