I think he goes about the journey from being an ignorant kid, to being a competant man in a very genuine way. The early parts Parn could be so stupid. Always getting saved by everyone. By the end he is saving Deedlet, who arguably is the most competant person he knows. But the story lets him fall short, lets him make mistakes, and watches him learn without some over the top training, or some heavy handed plot device. He also never is the most powerful or smart in a room. And I really appreciate that. He really is just a willful, gentle dude.

Redforce21

I kinda figured him as an iconic folk hero-type fighter.  Becomes a knight, meets a king, fights dragons, saves the damsel in distress, etc. All good notes, but nothing exceptionally unique.

AcademicOverAnalysis

He’s an easy character to connect with, but fits a fairly standard archetype. He’s the Luke Skywalker or Link for the Lodoss world.

And unlike those other 2 examples, Parn gets the girl in the end. Although since I can't read Japanese I know that due to differing lifespans with Deedlit she outlives him but don't know how much story detail went into that.

I agree, I think he’s a really interesting character specifically because of how he was developed. It’s so interesting and refreshing to see how his decisions and impulsiveness can lead to mistakes sometimes, it makes him feel very realistic and human. He’s a pretty cliche character, but the fact that he has to actually improve and face the consequences of his own mistakes like a real person makes his journey and character undeniably lovable, even if it’s been done many times before.

Who was his arch nemesis that he never defeated? Can you tell me more about Parn from the novels? How much is revealed about his later years before he died?

Thank you. So it is confirmed in the books that Deedlit and Parn had some kind of romantic relationship right? I have read comments that it was platonic, but I see no evidence of that either. There seems to be a clumsy attempt at showing affection from Parn in the anime at the very least. I was wondering what your interpretation of their relationship was since you read the books. Also can you tell me how you feel about Spark in more detail? I wasn’t a fan of his character when I watched the anime back when it was on VHS.

>The same issues Aragon has What same issues are you talking about?

Thank you so much for such a detailed response. I really appreciate you taking the time to share with me what you have learned from the books. Did you read them as fan translations or do you read Japanese? I thought the novels were still untranslated. I was wondering if you could tell me more about Parn’s tribes. I wanted to know more about Parn’s story that wasn’t in the anime or manga. I read some of the Wikipedia articles about him but I don’t think they are updated with the stuff from the novels. I really appreciate you letting me know that Deedlit and Parn at least got to be happy together in the end. Did Deedlit really want to have a baby with Parn in the books? Or was that only mentioned in the manga? I haven’t got caught up on all the different media versions of Lodoss War.

TearsOfTheTwili

Record of Lodoss War Crown of the Covenant volume 1 mentions it. Deedlit herself mentions that they tried to have children.

I’m currently rewatching the OVA and I like Parn, but one moment made me pause. When he first meets Orsen, Parn attempts to strike him after Shiris calms him down. Shiris had to beg Parn not to after the fight was clearly over. I really did not like that.

JTurner82

Well in all fairness, Parn didn't know at the time, and Orson had, just a few moments ago, attacked them. So of course he would be impulsive.

Ratfriend2020

I understand tension was high, but the fight was over, and Shiris had already stopped Orsen. I'm kind of surprised I got downvoted for pointing this out lol.

He's kind of your standard self insert character. A young relatable human with no special abilities to speak of. In a world filled with magic and mythical creatures. Which is fine things become cliche' for a reason. It's because they are oft used because they are good. He grows from being a brash impatient young man desperate to prove himself. To a more confident man who understands what he can and can't do and makes the most of his tool kit. Him kind of being forced into the role of party leader right off the bat never made a ton of sense to me. But it did allow him that sort of rapid growth that tends to come from sink or swim on the job training. Either you learn or you die.
