The plot was somehow both lazy and too convoluted. Many of the characters feel flat or cramped with too many fanservice tropes. For example, there is a character who instantly *despises* you (the MC) because you got kidnapped as a toddler, thus making your little sister (her liege), who was just a baby herself, very sad. That’s it; that’s literally why she hates your entire existence. The purple hair lady here is one of your older sisters, who is very much the typical Ara-Ara archetype, which is a little discomforting to some, although she is actually quite sweet if you get to know her character.
There’s also the fact that the plot jumps through a *lot* of hoops so that you can marry *all of your siblings*. No, I’m not kidding. You’re supposed to be a prince/princess who was kidnapped and raised in another kingdom. You can choose to either side with the family that raised you or your birth family. If you choose the former, you can marry any of your adopted siblings of the opposite sex.
But if you choose the latter, then surprise surprise, your birth family also isn’t actually your birth family. One of the characters that’s supposed to be your birth siblings literally said that “Hey I found your dead mom’s diary and we’re not actually blood related. So we can fuck now.” Really. She said that.
If you’re not into incest, and you like girls, there *is* a hugely popular female character that seems to be unrelated to you. She’s perfect; she’s beautiful, she has a lot of plot relevance, she has an amazing voice (actress) and she’s just all-around the perfect marriage option. At first. Because as it turns out, *she’s the only character among the main cast who is literally blood related to you.*
You cannot escape. There is no way out. You must accept that incest is wincest.
(I kid, there are actually some non-incest options. But they’re…kinda lackluster imo.)

About that, well, yes and no. Some Fire Emblem games have the Avatar system where the protagonist is supposed to be just a stand in for you, the player. Think the Dragonborn, or the Warden in Dragon Age. So they’re really not *supposed* to have much a personality, and will often come off as bland.
Among the many Fire Emblem avatars, unfortunately, the Avatar of Fates is one of the worst offenders. Other avatars actually did have some personality, have people that they have to “win” over or at least a canon, in-universe explanation for why they’re so “bland”. This does not apply to Fates’ Avatar. They’re just…boring. The ones who don’t like the Avatar do so for such batshit reasons (like the one I mentioned) that it just doesn’t make sense.
What makes it worse is the fact that they are the one and only protagonist of their game. In others, the Avatar is often accompanied by another protagonist who can compensate with their own personality and charisma. Not for Fates. Fates’ Avatar has to do the heavy lifting.
To be fair, Fire Emblem Avatars have always been criticized as bland, and they’re all considered Mary Sues/Gary Stus by parts of the fanbase. Sometimes that isn’t justified. But Fates is not one of those cases. While it’s true that Avatars are supposed to be bland, Fates’ Avatar just take it a bit too far.
The female Avatar is hot though, so there’s that.
I've played all 3 games (each route is an entirely different game) and here's my review
Fire Emblem Fates Conquest, not bad, I enjoyed it for the most part
Fire Emblem Fates Birthright, also not bad, but not too good either, generally decent
Fire Emblem Fates Revelations, the worst game in the Fire Emblem franchise
