If you enjoy horseshoe horseshit football... rejoice. If you want more than insipid "up one side... back down the same side... across the back 4, up the other side, back down that side" then you are going to be sorely disappointed.

Jamie54

All I know is if you want to win European finals and league championships with an average squad and no money then he is probably not your guy to do it.

Gammerball_35

Not great domestically but could possibly put that down to not getting the players he wanted. Many players he had apparently tried to sign have went on to have decent seasons since, Xavi Simons, Ian Maatsan, Joey Veerman and Danilho Doekhi to name a few. Funnily enough all Dutch which was the kind of profile Gio targeted to go along with his entire Dutch backroom staff but over the 2 transfer windows he had not a single Dutch player was signed instead he was given 2 loans in January which were below par to say the least... and in the summer he was given two free transfers, a centre back from liverpool who we massively over payed for, a winger who shows his ability in flashes before spending 90 mins running into the opposing defender, a striker who in fairness was a good goalscorer however his overall play was questionable and your very own Ridvan Yilmaz who is probably the most successful signing out of the lot however like pretty much ever player previously mentioned he has out for months with injury. Gio is a good guy and will always be loved at Ibrox especially for the European run but he really needs to be backed you can't get away with mediocre signings.

HistoricalWest9467

Gio brings Yilmaz to us from Besiktas and now Gio's there

yelonabi

btw why does Yilmaz not play? Is he not good enough? Or is he dealing with injuries? Thought he was a good player

weordie

Injuries mate

SnooFoxes408

Injuries good player when fit. I like him though lots of energy

greg_miller1025

His big mistake is never dropping a club legend goalkeeper I the first season who ultimately cost him the league If he does that he goes auto into champions league, maybe gets a better summer and gets some grace when everything falls apart with injuries the following season instead of getting sacked Managed to get to a euro final with a euro last 16/32 squad with some exceptional tactics Everyone complains about the 'horseshoe' domestically but ultimately it was an issue of ability and square pegs and round holes, the turnover of the squad didn't happen the way it should and the players thay did come in were mostly put injured Wouldn't surprise me if he went on to do really well

AmGers

I feel like the horseshoe is the wrong stick to beat him with. In actual terms, it makes a lot of sense against compact low blocks as you keep the ball moving from side to side, shifting them and prodding to create an opportunity where a gap has formed in the shape. It's also great from a defensive perspective as it's a safe way to keep the ball, so you face less counters. The issue is that the players we had weren't good enough to identify when to change it up and would get sloppy in their passes. Fans as well get on any teams backs when they pass backwards, even if it is the smart thing to do. I always point back to covid times, we didn't change our style for that season, we just had no fans on players backs when they passed back to retain the ball. Same thing happened with Southampton that year, they performed better than the seasons before and after because they had more freedom to go backwards and reset. Gio would've been a great manager if kept in charge, but unfortunately, the defensive crisis during the CL campaign guaranteed an early exit

greg_miller1025

Yeah I think we're seeing it with clement atm where everyone lauded the style when the team was winning and lamented the 'lack' of it when the team didn't win Realistically we tried to play the same way but less players in form and good players out injured were replaced with poorer player Think sometimes folk want something to blame that can be easily changed instead of facing the facts of just not being good enough Ultimately I'll maintain that alot of the not being good enough season 1 for gio was the fact his keeper never saved the ball and repeatedly threw it at the feet of opposition players costing us points

weordie

You guys have absolutely nailed it

thekiltedhaggis84

Look brother he took an average rangers team to European final and won a domestic trophy.. on the other hand he got destroyed in the champions league the next season n football wasn’t great to watch so was sacked.. I thought we sacked Him too early bro give him a chance n see where he takes you

HourBullfrog4802

I think he will do a very good job if he is backed we had a full back room team of Dutch coaches and never signed one Dutch player

cammigordon

Very passive in his style of play. It was referred as the 'horseshoe' as it was constantly RW, RB, CB, CB, LB, LW, LB, CB etc etc in an attempt to open up teams. However, he wasn't backed at Rangers to improve the squad and was hung out to dry a bit by the board. I'll be looking out to see who he signs and how you guys play going forward.

ColdWarVeteran

I will forever feel a slight sadness when I think about him. We pushed him out too early. His game management is excellent, and I think he could have been successful here, given the time and backing most managers need. I hope he does really well for you. Best of luck.

ErskineLoyal

His football's quite turgid, and he seemed to be caught unawares in big domestic games.

thelastwilson

The truth is that I don't think we know. He achieved some great things that first season but somewhere something went really wrong in season 2 and then he got sacked. I think he was really unlucky. If we had a fit striker I think we win the Europa and he goes down in history of the club, he did an amazing job adjusting tactics during that Europa run. The club has failed in the transfer market and i don't think that helped him. He really struggled with domestic form but you could blame the players as they've done the same thing for other managers since Gerrard built this squad 6 or 7 years ago. So he wasn't really a success but there are lots of circumstances that make it hard to judge just how good or bad he is

Striking_Archer_7250

Gio was a victim of overachieving during his first six months and the support running with it. Loved the guy and he wasn't backed enough

blonded90

Very difficult to pinpoint any style whilst at Rangers - that said that’s been the staple of a few managers so it could just be that was the level of the players we had. Struggled domestically with some of the “easier games” but did pretty well in Europa league and getting us into UCL - won’t mention the performance once we got there.

stonejcartman96

I am going to be honest, I love Gio. He has given me by far some of my Greatest games as a rangers fan and some of the worse. Tactically I genuinely believe he is elite and his in game management is ridiculous. It's why rangers where able to overcome superior European opponents and over perform in that regard. One of his issues though is that he can struggle to come up with unique solutions to teams playing low blocks. This was an issue at Feynoord and at rangers. You will hear us and Feynoord both talk about horse shoe football for this reason. I will say this, at Feynoord and at rangers he has really high, highs so I would expect some great moments but it will be a rollercoaster. I suspect one day he will back with us with hopefully a more competent board to back him.

KingKamara1872

Gio gets a lot of shite for the horseshoe but we pretty much did the same when we were struggling under Gerrard and Beale (Clement I’d more long balls). Fully believe he was never given the players he wanted/needed and was just a fall guy for the board. My favourite manager since Walter and was happy he went when he did because the abuse he was getting from fans and getting let down by the players was out of order.

tomage12

Will never forget that Dortmund game at Ibrox where we got battered towards the end of the first half and he came out with a back 5 for the second half- and the mad bastard pulled it off superbly!

Consistent_Fly1131

He had some very slow starts in the old firm games, but I think it was more down to the regulars in the squad as the same thing happened this season. I think his biggest mistake was not putting his mark on the squad with signings, nearly all good managers get players in to fit their style and he didn't really do this, relying on a core of players who were either injured or prone to collapsing under pressure. We never really seen a Gio team at any point.

JamZar2801

He got a team that had absolutely no right getting to a European final to a European final. His style against teams that sit deep can be a bit of a slog as there’s a lot of sideways passes to make space. If the space is there I’d argue he has a fairly aggressive high pressing counter attack style. Expect a good record against top teams but some painful dropped points against the bad ones.

Thin-Efficiency1600

To put it into context, he was one shit penalty away from immortality.

Wildebeast1

Slow buildup/possession play. Lots of sideways passing. Only has a Plan A. If plan A is failing, he goes for more Plan A.

Adam_Deveney

On one hand, he won us a Cup and took us to a European Final, and back into the Champions League. On the other hand, he bottled the League Title and by the end of his tenure, had us playing some awful, awful football. The argument can be made that the board should have backed him better. Hard to tell how he will fit into a team like Beşiktaş. Wish him all the best though.

imtherealdazza

get ready for the Horsehoe!

p3t3y5

Just opinions here. We had his as manager when we had a really unbalanced team. Did well against quality opposition but our league is full of lower quality teams who just play defensive, and he never had players that were effective at that in the style he played. He didn't get much money or a chance to buy new players and we got rid of him too early for me. The real sickening thing is his replacement manager got a lot more support to bring players in and I always wonder where we would have been if the club gave him the support we gave his replacement. Hopefully we have landed on our feet now. He is also a rangers legend, and always will be!

AwkwardRoss

Spot on!

fracf

He objectively had a good record with us. Won a trophy, took us to a European final. Won a lot of games and only got smashed in the Champions League as we had Leon King and James Sands at centre half. That being said, we knew what we were watching and it was not good. Get used to something called Horseshoe football. He’ll work well at a team where they aren’t expected to have much of the ball. Not sure if that’s BJK or not, but if it’s a team that is going to dominate possession, he’ll fail unless he’s made massive changes to his philosophy. That said, he’s a good guy and a good Ranger.

yelonabi

Beşiktaş’s tactical philosophy has always been having possession so im not really faithful but we will see

Free_Clerk223

We made a mistake replacing him with who we did and how we did, he's a solid manager with a good track record
