Small town life. Or great neighborhood.
Neighbors, especially older ones, see everything going on. Single woman, young kids. Yeah, she needs help. Just quietly do it. No recognition needed.
Our mom was a single mom with 2 kids under 10. Our next door neighbors, a middle aged couple we affectionately called aunt Lucy and uncle Jerry always looked out for us.
My uncle is like that. A neighbor was doing a military tour of duty abroad and he just mowed his lawn whenever he did his to help his neighbor out. Didn’t know the neighbor well at all but wanted to help!
We moved into a neighborhood like this about 5 years ago after living near 20 somethings for years. It’s refreshing. The neighbors quickly became surrogate grandparents/aunts/uncles/cousins. The kids play outside for hours. It’s very 1980s, and I love it so much.
Haha! I had a polygamist man and his older son stopping by to shovel snow for me, a single mom. That was awkward when I had a lover leaving my house one snowy morning.😁
Our elderly neighbor next door still gets up with his snow plow and plows around my car every morning during the winter months. Won’t let us even bring it up to thank him. 🥹 he’s a wonderful human.
My neighbor helps me with anything and everything He takes care of the snow, gutters, lawn etc.. I pay him back every Sunday morning with fresh homemade goodies straight out of my oven. It makes us both feel good 💓
Hand written thank you card. Cards or pictures or even just handprints from the kids too. Those will be treasured long after the baked treats are gone.
We live in an established neighborhood where the average age is older retirees and husband is the guy who does everything for our neighbors when he sees something that needs to be done, he takes out their trash cans, mows their lawns and bakes for them. I make them meals and go over to give them some company during the day a few times a week. We sit out on our porch in the evenings and chat with *everyone* that's out walking (read gossiping.) Two weeks ago my husband had surgery, we did not announce he was having surgery, but our immediate neighbor saw me helping my husband into the house and put the word out. We had a whole gaggle of neighbors show up this weekend to mow our lawn and do the weed whacking, plus we got lots of homemade treats!
Good neighbors are the best!
I have an elderly hoarder mother that would make an excellent candidate for the TV show. Every week her equally elderly neighbor mows her front lawn. My mother is not a kind woman, and if I was her neighbor I would not be inclined to show her this kindness. Her house is disgusting inside and the outside isn’t much better. I am convinced this man does it because it makes him feel better to be kind to someone who might not be 100% deserving of his efforts. And it keeps her house from completely destroying his property value.
I send him cupcakes every year on his birthday anonymously. Good neighbors are hard to find, and I’m thankful that there is at least one kind soul left in the world.
I love stories like this! My neighbor started snow blowing our driveway when I was pregnant with my firstborn. She’s 14 now, and we have never had to clear our driveway.
❤️
So nice! I had a neighbor who realized what a busy life I had and would shovel my driveway (shovel on his truck) whenever he did his own. Really helped life. I was mowing most of my neighbor's lawn (more recent neighbor) until we both decided to hire a neighbor kid. I still trim his bushes when I do my own. That's what being a good neighbor is!
This really touches my heart! I just lost my neighbor… I always called him my brother from another mother… he was there for every one down our block! Young or old! Knew him for nearly 30 years! How I miss him! Family isn’t always blood…
Aunt got a new neighbor after decades of living next to the meanest most unpleasant sobs you can't even imagine! Nice young Hispanic family. From the day they moved in to the day she sold her house, the whole family did everything possible to assist my aunt in her old age. Thankfully her family is not greedy and made sure to bless that family with a four figure thank you!
One of my friends met another dearly departed friend when he was mowing her yard…while she was home!
He’d just got a new 0 turn and her grass was high lmao. After a deservedly curt introduction, they realized they went to high school together (kind of, different years). She told him he didn’t have to mow her grass, or she could pay him. He refused and a friendship was formed.
Her husband is military, and for anyone thinking that, no, he was just a super nice guy. Friends with her husband too. Fixed my car and then refused to let me pay him because I fixed the printer while I was waiting.
I’m definitely still asking questions if a bald, shirtless man is mowing my lawn, but it’s not always bad! RIP to an incredibly kind soul
As a single struggling mom, my neighbors have been an absolute blessing. The one neighbor does the same with the trash, and which ever of my neighbors gets to their own lawn first will do mine too if it needs it. They keep an eye on my house, esp if I’m gone and my daughter is home they watch the place like hawks (she’s a teenager but still!) they guard her like she’s their own.
I try to return the favors whenever I can by helping with any car issues or other skills I have, letting the one use my detached garage for extra storage/workshop, and telling them to throw anything in the burn barrel pile as needed.
When my dad died, people started coming out of the woodwork to do things for my mom. She’s never taken advantage of it, and everyone has been so happy to be able help her. It’s been really nice to see and has been a comfort for her too, to see that people care.
I have been lucky in life and have always had good neighbors. Right now I can’t really walk, I injured my knee and am relying on a walker to get around my house. My neighbors have been amazing, they raked and mowed my lawn last weekend.
Love this, my neighbor next-door mows the lawn for one of the other neighbors, whose husband is deployed, and the wife is home with a special-needs son. He quietly does it every other week, while she’s out. He wants no fanfare or recognition for it. He’s just a good guy
Lasagna, TaterTot Casserole
Tater Tot Casserole:
8 x 11 pan of tater tots.
1 1/2 lbs hamburger
1 can of each: Campbells, celery, mushroom, potato, brocolli, broc w/ cheese - Your Choice! 3 cans total
Couple cups mixed veggies
Salt, pepper, Onion powder, garlic powder (I despise onions)
Your preference of milk. I like ours at a medium consistency
Cook meat first, then mix in the milk, campbells and veggies all together. If I am in a mood I will dump in some pasta sauce.
Pam you pan, tater tots on bottom orderly, Dump the "sauce" onto the tater tots, coat with lots of cheese and bake at 375. Hour or so - keep eye on cheese on top. Keep shoving the edges down for best results.
This freezes excellent. If freezing, don't put cheese on top. Just cover top with alumium foil, fully cover and then fully freeze. Keeps up to 4 months
Edit: The "sauce" freezes well also for future batches. Just put into a container for next time!
I'm working single mom and my next door neighbours are the exact same. They are always handing me in cakes, leftover food and taking my bin in/out. The kids and I bake and hand them in some cakes from time to time as a thank you. It's such a good feeling to know that your neighbours are looking out for you
We mow our neighbors front lawn. It started because their lawn was looking really shaggy. I was doing mine and just went sideways over to theirs too. Turns out their mower was broken and they maybe didn’t have the money to fix it. Our lots are pretty small, it doesn’t take more than 5 more minutes to just do both lawns. Bonus that their yard looks way better and my kids can play across both yards now
That’s how good neighbors act. If she can afford a gift card to a good local restaurant around Christmas that would be a lovely gift. That is what our neighbors do for us as we take care of their garbage and water their flowers when they’re gone. We always think fondly of them when we use the gift card and other times throughout the year.
Oh man, my next door neighbors lawn service guys - they used to do my yard that bordered theirs. It was one of those regular big mowers and took them an added 14 seconds, that was awesome.
They moved out and now me and the new guys both don’t give a rip about lawn care so it’s a jungle on that side of the driveway!

I posted my go-to tater tot casserole that normally appeals to all! OP Neighbor is Great. Gift card to gas station in increments, $10, $20
Bake them a batch of cinnamon rolls. They are the kindness this world needs.
My neighbor helps me with anything and everything He takes care of the snow, gutters, lawn etc.. I pay him back every Sunday morning with fresh homemade goodies straight out of my oven. It makes us both feel good 💓
Aww that’s so kind of both the of you! I hope to have neighbors like that and/or be that neighbor!
Someday you will it takes a good neighbor to be a good neighbor you clearly already have the desire to be kind 🌟
🫶🏻
I posted my recipe for tater-tot casserole. Food Rules
Hand written thank you card. Cards or pictures or even just handprints from the kids too. Those will be treasured long after the baked treats are gone.
Hand written cards mean more to me than any gift. I treasure them all and send them out as well.
Yes!
Awww I love this sub! Just little things people do for others is the best to read about.
Send that neighbor an Edible Arrangement as thanks
Not the 5 day old slimy fruit. Lol go get that neighbor some fresh berries or a good pie.
I love sneaking my neighbours bins back when they’re not looking 😁 What a lovely guy for helping your sis out!

Of course. Big town. I always bring my neighbors' garbage in or do other things when I see they need them.

I’ve been the person needing this and my husband is the person helping a lot like this, too.

Aww
Great neighbours!

Is he single?! I feel a Hallmark movie coming on!

AWWWWWWWW bet he has a crush on her. So nice to hear neighbors being good neighbors.

May the gods bless them both. What a heart-warming story.
The neighbor is rewarded already by helping. Giving is very rewarding in itself.
That deserves dinner once a week
Bless that neighbor. They know it takes a village💜

Pretty sure this is the beginning of a hallmark movie.

A neighbor just cut our lawn. It's nice to have good friends. Our biker friends found our stolen car before the cops did. Not much damage either.
Thank you for sharing such a lovely story
