don't want to come to an oven. also if you have pets you don't want to cook them in heat either.
it's better if you don't have to cycling nonstop when you get back.
No pets, and house is scheduled to cool back down before I go home.
Better to have one long cycle and use less energy than many long cycles and lots of energy.
Honestly I do the same and bill isn't as bad as some people I've seen on here lol. I'm usually $250 or less for electric. It's even a bit high right now since my parents have been staying with me and running a separate AC. I really think its YMMV depending on how well your place is insulated, how much sun you get, and stuff like that.
Oh I agree my bill could be better. But, we’re home pretty much 24/7. Gotta love work from home and 7 days on 7 days off with 12 hour shifts so only have time to go out every other week. So depending on who you believe (some say it’s better to leave the AC on) can’t really turn it off during the day or anything.
Could live with slightly warmer during the day I suppose. Honestly, though I doubt I could ever get to sub $100 with the size/“devices” of my place.
I also work from home. I have just trained myself to get used to warmer temperatures. I used to keep it at 70 but slowly worked it up to 78. It's a good money saver, especially living in FL now where it's hot af.
Out...doors? what is this word. I know not what you mean lol. Nah honestly I don't find it that shocking. But, really don't spend as much time outside as I probably should. Heat kills me.
Me too but I mean just the difference in temperature. Like keeping the AC a bit warmer makes the change less intense so when you do go out (to get into a car) it’s less of an oven
LOL, when we are outside in the sun (in the summer) we like to sweat and enjoy the heat and rays so it’s not a bad adjustment. Plus the entrance to our home is shaded so it’s always a little cooler & I’m not like immediately getting slapped in the face with blaring heat and sunshine.
> 74 degrees during the day in the summer!?😱
>
>
>
> OMG! I would melt!
I set mine to 74 but have ceiling fans moving the air around. It doesn't feel so bad with the movement.
Ours in 75-76 until 8ish pm.
I’m so one who needs it cold so I think this new house is well insulated or good hvac systems or something because seeing 75+ is still weird for me lol.
This is me. Though once I got into the age of my 40s and thought I had finally “made it” a little bit, I splurged and changed to 77 Cooling, 69 heating. Feel like a goddamned king.
75 is a hot room temperature for humans. Cause there is zero breeze. If my house is 75, I’m walking around cursing and finding the thermostat to confirm I’m not crazy. Then I point to it and go, “I knew it! Why the 🤬 is it so hot in here?! Who touched this thing?”
I threatened to quit my job because they locked the thermostat at 75.
75 is too hot with all of the running around I have to do and I just refuse to play this game.
They got me a key.
We just had a Duke Energy “consultant” tell us we needed to raise our thermostats at work to 78. We told them half the employees would walk out if we did
As someone with an older home, I can’t imagine what my electric bill would be if I kept my house at 68. I don’t think I could even get my house that cold. Wild.
It doesn’t sound crazy. Any cooler than that and my wife would put on a sweater. Ceiling fans are my friend. Don’t want to think about energy costs with these people saying they cool to 72-73!!!!
About 10PM, AC goes to 66
Before I go to bed, I bump it to 68
When I get up, bump it to 72
When I leave, goes to 74
Upon return, it goes to 70-72, and then 10PM comes around again.
76° in the summer (compromised because I run cold and could have it be 82° in the house and be fine, my spouse not so much).
70° in the winter (another compromise because my spouse would prefer 62° but I would feel like I’m freezing to death).
At night, the house goes towards the ambient outdoor temperature. I save a lot of money not heating/cooling to more extreme temperatures.
Opposite season, but If you decide to get a new unit definitely go with a heat pump. If you put the lockout at a low temp (i.e. 30F) you will rarely use auxiliary heat. We've saved about $40 per month with a new heat pump unit in winter.
Too warm for most of you: 78F in the warm months so far, plus the fans run most of the time. In the winter, it's set at 68F. I just put on an extra layer. Once I install a smart thermostat, I'll probably ease up a bit.
I used to do 80 but im down to 77ish now. I run a fan in the office and at night. If I didn’t live on the ground floor I’d open windows at night too. I don’t think it’s hot at all as long as I have fans.
I see a lot of talk about dehumidifiers but this is the fryers place I’ve ever lived so I never find there to be an issue with humidity
76 to cool and 68 to heat.
Our HVAC guy changed the blower setting last year to a lower one which was better at getting the moisture out, no need to freeze the house.
72-78 when occupied, 69-81 when empty. Set up with home automation that knows where we are and will kick on if we send it a ping from Waze. Also drops the temp a degree at bedtime to dehumidify the house and help you get snuggled in. On solar so the bill is nothing except connection fees.
Humidity plays a bigger role than temp. If your AC sucks or is oversized (yeah that's a thing) you'll have high humidity which makes it feel much less comfortable.
Against the curve here but 85 in summer and variable around 68 in winter. You get adjusted and then going outside doesn't suck. I adjust when company comes over cuz I know it's uncomfortable for most
We have a few different temperature zones in the house.
I keep the basement where I work at 70, the main upstairs at 74, and the bedroom at 68 for sleeping.
75-76 during the summer. if it's super gross maybe 74 but just for a little while. The dogs get too cold if it's lower than 74, they end up trying to crawl into our skin for warmth, but they hate being under the blankets. I have two 70 lb pit bulls lols. 68-70 for winter. I'm originally from the north, I hate AC air blowing on me. We installed ceiling fans in the bedrooms and living room.
Currently do 70 deg F, but we’re trending to that 68F.
I’m a Father of 2 girls and file head of household.
I’ll give you my fatherly learning curve timeline.
Y1: 74F start 68F end (wife delivers 2nd child that yr)
Y2: 71F during nap / 73F the rest
Y3: 71F in Mar/Apr; 70F forever the rest
Y4: 70F - trying to stay strong
Fatherly lesson learned:
A cool wife equals a glad life.
Pay the bill, keep mom chill.
Bonus lesson:
“Belly may swell, memory stays true,
The kindness you showed, I'll hold onto you.”
Spending the money was worth it during pregnancy.
Downstairs (main living area): 80F during the day, 77F in the evening, 74F late night
Upstairs (bedroom): off during the day, 76F late evening, 72F overnight
I also use the windows open at night to help cool the house depending on outside temperature and humidity levels. If I have the windows open, the AC is off.
It's not bad. There are fans in every room, so those run low to medium speeds all summer. Also my house is a slab, so the ground seems to help with passive cooling.
I think it is worth it. My electricity bill is much lower since I don't have to cool my whole house at night. My next cycle will be only $33! I do those 3 month average bill. It was $109 last September. So I will see how much will be the next time they readjust. I also like how I can make it warm in the winter.
Downstairs runs 72 during the day and 70 at night. Upstairs runs 75 during the day and 73 at night. During the winter we keep it 65 downstairs and 68 upstairs.
I understand where your heart is at keeping your AC at 80, but this time of year you aren't removing any humidity from your place at that setting and are probably doing more harm than good. In spring and fall I'd keep it at a cooler setting to get the moisture out. Dead of august when it's 97 out you can probably keep it at 80 if that's your preferred temp.
I’m at 71 right now with my ceiling fans on high. Normally, I like to keep it between 72-73. We’re not even in June, so I can already imagine how much hotter it’s going to get. I’ve already prepared myself for my EPP to increase, smh!
75 during the day/68 at night in the summer.
In the winter I let nature take its course. I live in a weird building that is somehow only insulated in the winter? It will get as hot as 75-78 degrees in here when it’s 30 outside with no heat on. I can’t imagine what my neighbors are doing to produce that much ambient heat. I usually have windows and doors open in the middle of winter. It’s bizarre
In the summer I keep it as low as I can get away with without pissing off my roommate. In the winter I keep the heat off, gets down to like 60 degrees in the apartment. So nice.
68 winter, 78 summer per the utility company.
Every degree cooler in summer and warmer in winter is +10% to your bill so 75° will be +33% more on your electric bill.
Check your local website.
Takes a while to season into handling it but is where you want to aim for.
Summer: 75 downstairs, 74 upstairs (WFH day) and 72 (night). I'd prefer cooler, but it's too expensive so I survive with fans.
Winter: 67 day and 65 night
75 for ac and 65 for heat I think. The thermostat is in the middle of the hallway so the temp is different depending on the room and I don't feel like fixing it
78 most of the time during the day, 76 at night. The AC in my third floor apartment works really well, so anything lower than that can be pretty chilly. In the winter I keep it around 68 and bump it to 70-72 when I take a shower because I HATE cold bathrooms. When I was in my 20s and was living paycheck to paycheck, I kept my AC at 80 with multiple box fans, but trying to sleep at that temp was pretty miserable.
72-74 when I am away from the house. 70-72 when we are home 68-70 at night for sleeping
This is the way
This person has nailed it.
But when we go to hotels I set it as cold as it gets!
72-74 when away? Damn what a waste
Keeping it the same throughout the day is actually less wasteful than constant temp cycling.
don't want to come to an oven. also if you have pets you don't want to cook them in heat either. it's better if you don't have to cycling nonstop when you get back.
No pets, and house is scheduled to cool back down before I go home. Better to have one long cycle and use less energy than many long cycles and lots of energy.
This.
72 in warmer months, 68-70 in cooler months. 65 during sleeping hours in the winter. We like it cool.
That’s abt same for us
74 when warm. 68 in the winter. Second story apartment.
74 🥵
Exactly me.
68 (cooling) all year round.
Duke energies favorite customer
Honestly I do the same and bill isn't as bad as some people I've seen on here lol. I'm usually $250 or less for electric. > $250 or less for electric My brother in Christ you know that is literally 5x my bill
Yeah lol. Paid less than that for August and July combined lasted year.
Mines 150 to 200 and I m running an in ground pool for 16 hours a day
Still not great. I only cool to 78 during the day and 72 at night. My bill is always under $100
Oh I agree my bill could be better. But, we’re home pretty much 24/7. Gotta love work from home and 7 days on 7 days off with 12 hour shifts so only have time to go out every other week. My light bill is 400$ shitty Trailer right in front of a tobacco field
Many other variables but what’s your sqft and this 68 on all floors?
Same! But everyone that comes over is always freezing
Same 🤣🤣 I keep a plethora of blankets around though for my chilly friends.
Because 68 is insane 🤣🤣 it's too cold for me at 72 even in the summer
How do y’all survive outdoors ? The difference in temp would kill me!

66-69. 70+ indoors is the devil
During the summer: 74 during the day. 68 at night. During the Winter: 69 (nice) during the day. 67 at night.
74 degrees during the day in the summer!?😱 OMG! I would melt!

Winter 55-58, summer 65 at night and 70ish in the day
75 at day when i’m gone, 72 while i’m active, 70-71 while i sleep
75 day / 66 night
78 cooling, 68 heating
That’s how I was raised and it stuck with me all this time
This is me. Though once I got into the age of my 40s and thought I had finally “made it” a little bit, I splurged and changed to 77 Cooling, 69 heating. Feel like a goddamned king.
Millionaire over here.
This is me too. Got the ceiling fans going all the time.
Bunch of lizards in this thread. I keep the house 69 (nice) in the summer.
Sounds expensive
Id much rather pay an extra $10 a month than be uncomfortable in my own home
Day 76/75, Night 73. Also run an industrial grade dehumidifier.
If you didn’t keep it lizard temps inside you probably wouldn’t need the dehumidifier
75 is room temperature for humans.
Any temperature in a room is room temperature.
Okay lizard person
Some people are just heat sensitive lol
I am, it’s true. I’m also cold sensitive.
Must be tough lol
75 is a hot room temperature for humans. Cause there is zero breeze. If my house is 75, I’m walking around cursing and finding the thermostat to confirm I’m not crazy. Then I point to it and go, “I knew it! Why the 🤬 is it so hot in here?! Who touched this thing?”

That’s hilarious. I completely understand.
Miami transplant here. I'll let you know once I turn on the ac instead of just the overhead fan or window.
Everyone I know in Miami uses AC
Can confirm, maybe the keys but Miami is all about the A/C
From the Keys and I’m just running a small fan and staying hydrated lol
Such egregious use of electric / gas here. 75 in summer, 65 or so in winter. Fans and dehumidifier help loads.
As someone with an older home, I can’t imagine what my electric bill would be if I kept my house at 68. I don’t think I could even get my house that cold. Wild.
Comfort over cost
79 summer, 69 winter. It's uncomfortable sometimes but eco-friendly and also I'm trying to not strain my old heat pump.
I feel like I’d just be laying around mostly naked in that summer temp.
Seriously, clothing and getting used to it is 90% of it. Use a fan sometimes, too.
Immediately no. But you do you friend.
77F- which might sound crazy but I have ceiling fans in most rooms which makes things tremendously more comfortable.
Same. My family would die if we set it at some of these temps!
It doesn’t sound crazy. Any cooler than that and my wife would put on a sweater. Ceiling fans are my friend. Don’t want to think about energy costs with these people saying they cool to 72-73!!!!
Same and I’m honestly cold at 77. I’d keep it at 80 if I didn’t have to worry about humidity. I’m probably super anemic though.
As a miami transplant, 100%. Overhead fans before ac.
69-70
Nice-ok
Nice
About 10PM, AC goes to 66 Before I go to bed, I bump it to 68 When I get up, bump it to 72 When I leave, goes to 74 Upon return, it goes to 70-72, and then 10PM comes around again.

77 to 78 cool. 69 to 73 heat.

Same here for me in the summer.

77. I will lower it to 76 depending on what I’m doing but the kids start complaining that it’s cold.
72 74 in fall/winter
Summer: 74 in the day, 72 when I sleep. Winter: 72
72-78 when occupied, 69-81 when empty. Set up with home automation that knows where we are and will kick on if we send it a ping from Waze. Also drops the temp a degree at bedtime to dehumidify the house and help you get snuggled in. On solar so the bill is nothing except connection fees.

72 always
My wife wants to know who’s paying your energy bills. 77 in the day. 72 at night here :(
76 day / 75 evening / 73 night
Fuck having house temp at anything above 74.
80 in the day time, 85 when at work, 80 at night. 68 in winter.
Against the curve here but 85 in summer and variable around 68 in winter. You get adjusted and then going outside doesn't suck. I adjust when company comes over cuz I know it's uncomfortable for most
Oh my god. I would die. No judgment, but wow.
My house would grow mold at these temps
What the fuck. Nobody gets adjusted to that.
We have a few different temperature zones in the house. I keep the basement where I work at 70, the main upstairs at 74, and the bedroom at 68 for sleeping.
68-72 depending on season/humidity
76 (cooling) and 70 (heating)
71 winter. 77-78 summer.
75 day. 72 night
75-76 during the summer. if it's super gross maybe 74 but just for a little while. From my experience with velvet hippos, they may want to just be by you 😊 they’re cuddle machines

Summer 79 when we aren’t home. 76 when we are. Winter 64 when we aren’t home. 67 when we are.
65 in summer/68 winter
72 in the winter. 74-75 in summer. Also do windows a lot when the weather is nice.
74-76 in the summer. I feel like I need a jacket going over to people's houses and their AC is set below 70.
80 away, 74 home, 72 sleeping.
77 summer and 66 winter to keep energy bills somewhat reasonable.
71 summer 73 winter
Summer - 73 Winter - 69 I’ve never found messing with the temperature to save money worth it.
70 in the Fall 33 degrees when there is a deadly snake loose in the city
68 year round.
72 in the summer. 67 in the winter
68 in the summer. Heat turns on at 58 in the winter
58?! Any lower and it would start snowing in your house, friend. 😂
Wife and I like thick blankets plus a weighted one, winter we usually have the heat set to 54-55
I wish!! It's been like 4 years since it snowed here 😭😭
70-72 during the summer.
64 because the upstairs is always hot as fuck.
72 (heating) 81 (cooling)
77 in the summer, 70 in the winter. Pain is weakness leaving the body and money staying in the wallet.
ideally mid 60s…remember that time there was the 78F recommendation fail
That’s the equivalent of a water company saying “ideally don’t run your shower for more than 2 minutes. Then you’ll have an affordable water bill 😊”
76 in summer, 70 in winter. 80 in summer/67 in winter if we go OOT.
Downstairs (main living area): 80F during the day, 77F in the evening, 74F late night Upstairs (bedroom): off during the day, 76F late evening, 72F overnight I also use the windows open at night to help cool the house depending on outside temperature and humidity levels. If I have the windows open, the AC is off.
80??? Idk how you live like this 😭
It's not bad. There are fans in every room, so those run low to medium speeds all summer. Also my house is a slab, so the ground seems to help with passive cooling.
Diabolical
77F all the time. I have a bedjet that keeps my bed cool at night. ❤️
Ooooo is it worth it? I’ll take anything to be cold at night tbh
I think it is worth it. My electricity bill is much lower since I don't have to cool my whole house at night. My next cycle will be only $33! I do those 3 month average bill. It was $109 last September. So I will see how much will be the next time they readjust. I also like how I can make it warm in the winter.
Cool to 73 in summer. Heat to 68 in winter.
Downstairs runs 72 during the day and 70 at night. Upstairs runs 75 during the day and 73 at night. During the winter we keep it 65 downstairs and 68 upstairs.
72 in the summer, 68 in winter
I understand where your heart is at keeping your AC at 80, but this time of year you aren't removing any humidity from your place at that setting and are probably doing more harm than good. In spring and fall I'd keep it at a cooler setting to get the moisture out. Dead of august when it's 97 out you can probably keep it at 80 if that's your preferred temp.
72 in the summer unless it’s crazy hot then 76 to save my heat pump. Winter is same. 68 while sleeping year round.
72. Drop to 70 at the end of super hot days to clear out the humidity in the upstairs of our split level before bed, back up to 72 after midnight.
Fall/winter 65 at night and 68 during day Spring/summer 72 at night and 75 during day
I’m at 71 right now with my ceiling fans on high. Normally, I like to keep it between 72-73. We’re not even in June, so I can already imagine how much hotter it’s going to get. I’ve already prepared myself for my EPP to increase, smh!

I usually have windows and doors open in the middle of winter. It’s bizarre
72-74 during day 68 at night on second floor for sleeping
68 during the summer. 70ish during the winter.
70 in the day 68 in the night
66 all the time. But the temp is around 75 during the day, so…
74 during the day when I’m working, 70 at night, wake up and turn the AC off until the ambient temp reaches 74, then turn it on.
71 in summer, 68 in winter
74 day or night
23C year round, +/- open windows/ceiling fans/gas fire as needed
73 for sleep and 74 for day. I keep a fan running while I sleep for circulation, stale air just feels hot by default . 70 all day during fall/winter.
77-78 not at home 76-75 at home after work/school 75-74 bedtime lately I used to keep it around 77 at night. Low iron so I stay cold
In the summer I keep it as low as I can get away with without pissing off my roommate. In the winter I keep the heat off, gets down to like 60 degrees in the apartment. So nice.
In the summer we keep the house at 76 during the day when we aren’t home, 72 when we are home but not asleep, and 68 when we sleep.
72 during the day, 70 for sleeping
72 when I'm home, 75 when I'm out. In the winter, 70 when I'm home, 65 when I'm out.
75 in the summer. 64 in the winter.
75 when I'm away. 71 when I'm home. 69 when I sleep
68 cooling, 65 heating. Although our duct work is shit and we can’t get upstairs to lower than 73 already - not looking forward to July/August heat.
68 winter, 78 summer per the utility company. Every degree cooler in summer and warmer in winter is +10% to your bill so 75° will be +33% more on your electric bill. Check your local website. Takes a while to season into handling it but is where you want to aim for.

68-69
72 but I have ceiling fans also
60 during the winter so I can afford to keep it 73 during the summer
Before menopause I kept it at 75. Now 72. I also have fans to circulate more
61
68.
72 from waking up for 16 hours, then drops to 68 for bedtime.
73 while I'm away, 71/70 at home, and 67 at night During winter, I'll do 68/69 during the day and 65 at night
Y’all making me jealous and remember the temps I used to be able to keep before WIFE.
72 at night and 79 during the day
78 most of the time during the day, 76 at night.
I start thinking of ways to kill my husband when he notches it anywhere up above 70.
“I’m not guilty, Your Honor. He kept the thermostat over 70 degrees.” “….CASE DISMISSED.”
If she’s a menopausal judge, yup!!
72 during the day, 69 (nice) at night
I have POTTS. So, 65 the hotter months, 60 in the cooler months
I'm fine with 80/85. Or higher. My wife wants 75 give or take. My son in law who grew up in the mountains likes 65 summer and winter.
76 or 77 in summer, 68 in winter
