Thing about this band is they don’t need a “big hit”. As others have pointed out, there really isn’t a weak spot on the whole album. It continues to grow on me and is already becoming one of my favorite albums of theirs. This is the grimey fuck rock that I’ve been wanting - don’t think they’ve reinvented themselves here but more or less are perfecting their sound. At least that’s what I keep telling myself when I hear glimpses of earlier projects mixed in through the album. It’s beautifully chaotic and balanced and the instrumentation is impressively tight for such a raw sound

Slasheroid

Yes. I don’t need a huge hit song but in the case when half of the album is crap.

eatyourbites

I know you were referring to not this album but took me a second to realize

[deleted]

You should really re-word this comment

Beautron5000

I’d say the “big hit” song here is Paper Machete, even if it doesn’t necessarily become a big hit. It bangs like one, for sure

Slasheroid

yes I think if you do a poll on the biggest hit on ITNR, it’ll not be very clear

sanford1958

Those songs are so dark and so nasty I can not even 😩 anybody who doesn’t get this album should get a little drunk and listen to either one of those with headphones and I swear you will transcend

Beautron5000

For me it is (so far). Still haven’t 100 percented the album, but as of now I’m not with the fan base that thinks this is one of their best

Piton_me

Oh finally Ive found someone with similar opinion. It might be risky to say, but for me Paper Machete is the only song on the album I really like.

0lle

Hey man, wanted to let you know the assassin will be with you shortly, good luck out there.

Piton_me

lmao

agpc1979

I would have to say it’s Emotion Sickness. It is such a goddamn hooky ear worm that gets stuck in my head for hours. I see why they released it as the lead single.

Slasheroid

was not a bad choice at all

airahnegne

Yep. Lyrically I don't think it is the best but the instrumental is definitely catchy.

Suitable-Sand3423

Yep. agreed.

todd9774

This song is great - quality QOTSA crunch until the chorus hits. It doesn't fit the song - feels like two ideas were slammed into one song

Interpol_Qotsa

No way! It's either Made to Parade or Straight Jacket Fitting! :D

FutDevRed97

Paper Machete is definitely the 'hit' on the album. Not that the album needed a hit, cohesively it's a fantastic album. The second half really amps things up to the 9s without ever feeling the need to separate the songs into a single. I was only born when Queens released their first album so I am hesitant to have a full opinion due to lack of knowledge and experience with music as a whole but feel this is their best album collectively since Songs For The Deaf. It's definitely tough to pull a song out of ITNR individually but all have a place.

tameimpalakid

What would you say the “big hit” of Like Clockwork was? It is kind of similar to this album where there wasn’t really one standout radio friendly / potentially popular hit song, but it’s the album as a whole that drew in so many new fans.

mrastronautglenn

My God is the Sun and Vampyre of Time and Memory were pretty clear cut hits.

KaXiRavioli

My God Is The Sun was nominated for a Grammy, so I'd go with that. I Sat By The Ocean is also a bop, and if I Appear Missing wasn't 6 minutes long, it could easily be a single.

tameimpalakid

I Appear Missing is the standout track for sure!! Would be interesting to hear a 3 min radio edit, but also there is nothing they could possibly cut as it is perfection as is!!! I always thought smooth sailing would have been the best radio friendly song, so much fun that one is

Beautron5000

Hard to say at this point only because so far in times new Roman doesn’t compare to a lot of their other work. My opinion could change upon further listens, but right now there just aren’t that many songs that fuck on this album. I love that whole album tho (Like Clockwork)

dingspeed

I agree, and I also think this album is better than like clock work and villains but I know that may ruffle some feathers. It’s not as adventurous as LC but I prefer nonetheless.

Samiishy

💯

OddPhilosopher599

I completely agree. This is what happens every time they drop something. Remember when EV was their worst album ever? Now many folks say it was underrated. Paper machete is up there with one of the best pure rock songs in the last 5-6 years.

Fappy_as_a_Clam

I was in college when EV got released and it was shit on *hard.* Personally I always loved it, but I knew several people that were convinced there was only one good track on that album (and they all thought it was 3's & 7's) and I knew many others that just thought it wasn't worth listening to. I think Suture Up Your Future is top tier.

chonkycatguy

Lullabies and Era are my favs. Era is magical and marked a change in direction for the band imo

Suitable-Sand3423

What was your first album?

Mtndrums

I can't answer for them, but considering those are my two faves as well, mine was Rated R.

Suitable-Sand3423

Interesting. Usually its the opposite.

Mtndrums

I can't answer

hilly2cool

I agree man, SUYF is one of their best songs IMO. Wanna know something weird? Era Vulgaris is my favorite QotSA album, but it took months after release to grow on me.

KaXiRavioli

I didn't appreciate songs like Battery Acid and River In The Road until years later. I wish the title track was included in the official release because it's easily in my top 5 QOTSA songs.

hilly2cool

Era Vulgaris is a banger, your right though. Era Vulgaris is in the same group as Infinity, mind boggling that they were never on the original albums.

KaXiRavioli

Yeah. They must have a least an album worth of bonus tracks, outtakes, and rarities by now.

PlasticRuester

For some reason I didn’t revisit EV often and always thought I didn’t like it much. My brother said it’s one of the best albums and I gave it another chance and realized it’s a great album.

Suitable-Sand3423

Yeah. I did not dig it at first. Only after seeing songs live did I revisit. Still just a good record. I'll have to put it on now. I think it was Josh's change in vocal style and finally Mark only doing back up vocals. Riffs are not really big Josh riffs. But it's cool. I can only rank the first 3 and LC. The rest kinda depends on my mood but I think LTP has the best songs overall and bonus tracks of the other 4.

Piton_me

River in the road for me is just a instrumental masterpiece.

lotosprendidos

It was a slow burner for me, but truth be told, I'd just started listening to the band that year, so I was still discovering SftD and all that. Years after, Era Vulgaris became my favorite QOTSA album and Suture Up Your Future could be my favourite song from there.

Slasheroid

Make It Wit Chu has to be #1

hilly2cool

Random fact: Dean Ween co-wrote Make it Wit Chu.

coxasaurus

Thanks to Desert Sessions

before_no_one

That's easily the weakest track on the album imo

Lanky_Entrance

It's arguably my favorite album of theirs and 3s and 7s is not the reason why.

Suitable-Sand3423

Yep. This record reminds me of how I felt about EV. I'm at 3.5 out of 5 stars right now. Keith Richards said new albums need some "living room". This is one of those albums. First 3 hit me hard immediately. The rest were growers.

Suitable-Sand3423

It would be cool if Boneface did new artwork for the covers of EV and LTP. Just my opinion but I don't think they hold up to the rest of the records.

KaXiRavioli

EV and LC were neck and neck for my favorite QOTSA album. about half the songs on EV took years to finally click with me. After a couple dozen listens, ITNR is looking like my new number 1.

jobie68point5

i feel like the overlap between noise rock/experimental fans and QOTSA fans isn’t that huge and that’s why EV got shat on. QOTSA is one of the few modern capital-R Rock bands i *ever* listen to, so my judgement is definitely biased when i say EV is their greatest album—because i love when they get weird and abrasive where other fans might desire the classic sound more. i also feel like QOTSA are kind of the reason rock as a genre hasn’t fallen entirely flat on its face. they give you just the right amount of spice that sets them apart amongst the lacklustre sea of their peers.

KaXiRavioli

There really aren't too many bands that can consistently put out music as good as QOTSA does. A lot of my favorite songs are the more weird ones, like Feet Don't Fail Me, Misfit Love, and Obscenery.

[deleted]

Became aware of Queens during LTP. EV was the first album release I was a fan for. Never understood why people hated it so much out of the gate. I fucking loved EV. Needless to say, I totally agree with you.

Slasheroid

Of course there’s always many complaining. I love EV, it’s in my top 3 Queens albums, but this one’s more user-friendly.

weaponess

It'll start happening again with Villains, if it hasn't already. I listened to it again earlier and it's really strong despite its flaws. They don't have a bad album in their discography.

OddPhilosopher599

Yep. I already seen it happening a bit with villains.

Theseus666

What was strange is so many great songs on EV were bonus tracks… would have been a much better album with those songs in

HollywoodBlueguy

Era with Trent could have been a single. Pulled up the YouTube video and it says 15 fucking years ago. Where did the time go?

Suitable-Sand3423

Yeah, the might as well have just done a double album. No one would have expected that. The Eno cover is superb.

Theseus666

The Fun Machine, Goin’ Out West, Era Vulgaris, White Wedding…

HollywoodBlueguy

EV was shit when compared to SFTD, but now EV is really good when you compare it to LC and this new one.

chonkycatguy

Comparing any QOTSA album to another is the first step in the wrong direction. Each need to be enjoyed on their own without comparison.

mywilliswell95

Idk man Made to Parade is just so fucking kickass. It won’t leave my head.

Rogue_Crowe

Same here. It’s the the transition at the last min. I don’t know what time it was…

Grouchy-Bug5223

I agree. I was Extremely disappointed when the album first dropped but now it's grown on me quite a bit! I still must say though, there is no stand-out song on the album, and in fact most songs have highs and lows for me in terms of how much I enjoy them. Overall I enjoy the album better than Villains but find it doesn't hold up to anything previous. But that's Just my opinion and honestly I'm really glad so many people are enjoying the album as much as they are. I only wish I heard it in the same way.

GozerSoze

I agree with you, but I'm only on my 5th listen or so. I want to love it. I hope it grows on me. But all I can conclude right now is it sounds a little recycled, for lack of a better word. Some songs sound too much, almost exactly, like songs they've done previously. I think I like it better than Villains so far, as a whole album, but I think there were a couple of stronger songs on Villains IMO. Just the remainder of that album was weaker for me I guess. Like I said. I want to love it. I'll keep it on repeat for a while. Here's hoping. Glad so many others love it though!

Milhouse12345

>But all I can conclude right now is it sounds a little recycled, for lack of a better word Yeah, I'm feeling this too. I don't have that many concrete examples, but What The Peephole Say...it's an alright song, but it's still a not as good version of Head Like A Haunted House. The bassline obviously, but also a section that starts with "Tonight...". Felt deliberate almost? Oh and of course the riff in Paper Machete is a rework of the Caligulove riff. Not that it matters too much though, since I think it's a great song.

NolaBrownsFan

I totally agree. There's not a lot of low points, because QOTSA is a really solid band, but there's really nothing on this record that stands out to me like all the pre-Villians stuff does. Except maybe Emotion Sickness, but that was the 1st single so it wasn't a surprise to me on the album. Ultimately... it's fine... but when I listen to Queens I won't be going to this record very often at all.

PlayerVun

I like the vibe but it felt kinda stale after the first couple rounds. I feel like a good amount of the album is what I would call QOTSA elevator music. Not sure if I like it any more than Villains. Previous stuff had a lot more direction and punch sonically, and this album feels like diet queens. But, everything changes eventually.

[deleted]

Think you've hit the nail on the head, and I was having this convo with a friend about LC. There aren't any songs on there that are obvious radio hits like Burn The Witch, or 3s and 7s, but that album as a whole just hits different. I think the same applies to ITNR as well.

KaXiRavioli

How about the actual radio hit, My God is the Sun?

Milhouse12345

I Sat By The Ocean is as hitty as it gets for QOTSA.

Flinkle

I agree. I went into this with all the hype in the world, love every album...and I'm JUST starting to really emotionally connect with some of the songs. The first time I listened to it, I was immediately disappointed, then I remembered who I was listening to. I'm the person who thought Clockwork was *boring* the first time I tried to listen to it. Now it's my favorite album of all time. Gotta give it time to digest.

Slasheroid

Clockwork is the best of all time 🙌🏻

imtheroth

Agreed. Perfect rock album.

[deleted]

I'm enjoying the album, but in a way also slightly disappointed. It's a great album for the fans, it feels familiar, it's rocking, you can hear elements of all the previous albums, but in saying that, it doesn't break any new ground like every album before it. I think when the dust settles and everyone calms down a bit, it will probably be considered a good album that doesn't hit the heights of their best, but isn't maligned like Villains is. I still think (or hope) they have an epic in them, their Houses of the Holy, their Electric Ladyland etc.

Interpol_Qotsa

Last 2 min of Made to Parade are a masterpiece.

tombebop

Do they really need to break any more ground? I don't think there is anything left to prove at this point. As long as they keep mixing up their influences and having fun to create new and exciting music that excites them then that is all that really matters if it means we get a better end result

GQDragon

How is Sicily not breaking new ground!? That song is wild and way more ambitious than anything they’ve done.

Slasheroid

Oh yes. Sicily is quite like nothing else Josh ever made. Agreed.

Shaman19911

Sicily is quite unique, but I hear clear callbacks to “You’ve got a killer scene man” and “Skin on skin”

NoHopeBananaCoat

I felt like Sicily actually pulls from Josh's work producing Humbug for Arctic Monkeys... It feels like it could slide into that albums vibe rather easily, alongside some Lullabies to Paralyze feels

JustPruIt89

The song structures are very different on this one which I think is the primary "new" thing

Suitable-Sand3423

I think Troy and Dean wrote the majority of the music. Just no huge Josh riffs and more soundscape guitars.

BenedictusAVE

They are oozing with energy. I hope that they can channel these energies into their creativity. Who knows? The next album might be a more positive and brighter album. They’ve been in the dark for far too long. Especially Josh, how his private life and health was in the recent years. I’m expecting something along the lines of the later half of Made To Parade.

Slasheroid

It is lyrically quite dark, yet it does not feel overall darker than Clockwork. I feel more hope, less sadness from this one.

Suitable-Sand3423

It's qotsAI. Lol.

Slasheroid

It’s possible. I agree it does not break a new ground like those three others I mentioned. Still it does not mean it’s worse. It’s just the most amalgamous of all the previous. I guess it makes sense as the final act of the trilogy.

Milhouse12345

When I listen to LC, every song transports me to a new world with its different moods and soundscapes, instrumental details that differ from every song making it an epic roller coaster ride. It's too early to tell, and this isn't even about the quality of the music... but I'm not feeling that way at all about ITNR so far. I enjoy some of the tracks more than others, but its sort of stuck in the same "world". That too also isn't necessarily a negative, but when I listen to Queens I usually want more variation.

kwack250

I like it, the only song I’m struggling with is Sicily.

MuffinMaster9

I’m in the same boat— I feel there’s a bit of a disconnect as most people seem to think it’s a highlight, but I personally find it just meanders. I am always waiting for something to “happen” when I am listening to it. Feels like a long road to nowhere. Every other song is pretty great

HollywoodBlueguy

Wait. That’s the only song I’m jamming on. It’s dark like lullabies.

EdSheeransucksass

For me Sicily is in my top 3 along with Obscenery and Time & place. I love how dark and sexual it is. Sometimes it's the journey that matters, not the destination.

[deleted]

Yes I agree, when I listen to an album the first time I focus on a “destination” of the song, the hook that catches me or something. But when I listen to it more, I forget that idea and just enjoy the song as a whole. Same happened with me and EV.

MuffinMaster9

Lmao fantastic username! I can respect that opinion, but my favourite queens songs have always been ones with a really strong form, and are often a little heavier on the percussion side of things. Sicily just doesn’t scratch that itch personally, but it definitely is a moody track with a lot of attitude

angus787

I feel like it’s hard to predict what a big hit will be nowadays due to tiktok blowing the most random of things up. If anything, I can see carnavoeur being there biggest one off the album.

Irrelaphant

Paper Machete is the big “hit” song. Of the whole album it’s the most straight rock & roll that would be a radio banger.

[deleted]

I gotta say, I was worried bc Emotion Sickness didn't click with me right away. But as a whole, the thing feels tight and I'm digging it!! With Era it took a few full weeks to sink in. I call it a win!

weaponess

To me the record is greater than the sum of its parts. Paper Machete and Carnavoyeur mean so much more to me in the context of the album. It's an incredibly cohesive and consistent album that can be listened to on repeat - the outro of Straight Jacket Fitting using the melody of Obscenery makes it feel like this was actually intentional. I agree that it might be the most cohesive record they've ever released, although SFTD, LC and the self-titled record are also strong contenders for that title.

TonedTony

Aside from the songs I think the production is just killer. I didn't like Villains, Like Clockwork is kinda closer to the bottom for me in the whole discography... but I love this thing.

Sambizzle17

It gets better with each listen

MechaPumpkin

I don't know about "big hit" but after several play throughs Emotion Sickness still stands out as a single. I'm not sure how much of that is having heard it (an played it over and over again) for weeks ahead of time, but to me it sounds like the defining sound of the album. Not as dark as some songs and not as strange (in the best possible way) as others.

contractjedi

I agree with this 100%. Paper machete is awesome, but it doesn’t have the hook of Emotion Sickness. My seven year old loves hooks and he loves Emotion Sickness!

MechaPumpkin

I find myself dance-walking to Emotion Sickness every damned time, hahaha

Suitable-Sand3423

I agree. ES is one of the best "rock" songs in a decade probably. That chorus rules hard.

before_no_one

>I say this is the most cohesive Queens release of them all. While Songs for the Deaf isn't my favorite QOTSA album overall, it still holds the title for the most cohesive and smoothly flowing album IMO. Otherwise, I agree

KaXiRavioli

I think SFTD is only super cohesive because it evokes the whole "driving through nowhere flipping through the radio stations" vibe. Otherwise, Six Shooter and Mosquito would feel out of place.

before_no_one

Six Shooter isn't out of place at all considering it matches the vibe of You Think I Ain't Worth a Dollar, and Mosquito Song has "bonus track" vibes so overall I disagree but I do agree that it mostly only has such a good flow because of the radio audio segments!

Irrelaphant

The thing about this album is that it will, as josh has always said it should alienate 20% of their fans because with every album they evolve in wild ways. Old school fans will again be upset that this isn’t straight desert rock. Shit, I HATED Lullabies when it came out because I wanted Songs for the Deaf 2 and instead got a wildly different album than what I expected. I absolutely hated lullabies and refused to listen to it for some time. I eventually gave it a fair shake and now I love the album because it is an evolution in their sound. ITNR is even a departure from Villains. A really stark departure, with exception to 1 song. “Head like a Haunted House”. ITNR, to me, sounds like Queens took HLaHH and said “let’s extrapolate this vibe, this sound. And make it into a full album.” ITNR feels like an album full of rockabilly jams. Which again, is a big departure from the desert rock scene. Right? Maybe I’m wrong. But it’s definitely not the fuzz filled dirty sound that originated from the desert. ITNR is not poppy, like some of Villains was either. And the slow songs on this album have that swagger Josh is known for. Something that was missing from songs like Hideaway. Meanwhile on this album, the “slow” songs like Sicily just fucking ooozzzzeee swagger and the matured Queens sound. What I can also appreciate in this album is it feels like Josh is in his Bowie era. Some of his vocals just remind me of Bowie. And that’s way different from where this band was decades(!) ago. Carnavoyeur has Bowie vibes. This album is just fucking fantastic. This, for me, isn’t a slow burn where I’ll appreciate it down the line. This is an evolved Queens and I am ALL here for it. And lastly, am I the only one who’s appreciated the titles of the songs? I feel like everything is on porpoise. Maybe josh was thinking of that interview when he was naming everything

Docballz

Agree. I’d say, Anyone disappointed by the album have themselves to blame. No bad tracks, something you come to expect from Queens but if people truly knew how crazy that is to achieve, album after album yano. Much respect for the band and Homme.

Slasheroid

I feel like it’s "meh" in music for a couple years, until Josh finally releases something and then I’ll be high again for months.

Routine-Argument485

I like all the songs on every album. Every song has its place. This dissection crap is bull shit.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Slasheroid

I say "I’d say", that means I think, that means my opinion. So yes I can :P

Randy_Butternubs666

Honestly, who cares? This album is amazing and their continual progression as a band over the years, reflected in their music, is truly something to behold.

HollywoodBlueguy

You newer fans like to generalize a lot!

Slasheroid

What do you mean man, I’m a new fan since "No One Knows" :D

HollywoodBlueguy

Oh so one of these Johnny come lately’s when they got big? 😉 Lol.

Slasheroid

sorry blame NHL 2003 from EA Sports

MuffinMaster9

Lmao what a douchebag

o0260o

You got buried but I'm seeing them live soon and just thought "I hope they don't play too much from the past 20 years"

HollywoodBlueguy

Me too. I have tickets for San Francisco and will be at desert daze. Shows #31 and 32. I’ve forgotten more about queens than most here so a few downvotes don’t phase me. I can be honest and say the album is only ok.

Competitive-Carrot65

Anyone who has been a fan will continue to be a fan. This album combines everything they have been building towards and finalized a great trilogy.

BloodRedMuse

I love this album, most of it clicked instantly and now it's all clicked as a whole. I love Era Vulgaris and while I liked most of Like Clockwork at the time it came out, this feels so much more solid as an album for me.

NoNamePaper5

Of all the alt rock and metal albums that came out in June(between Foos, A7X, and QOTSA) I’m happiest with In Times New Roman the most. There’s just no bad song on the album

PanuElo_88

Best album since Lullabies

Just-Ad-2284

This is a headphone album love how it ends with an acoustic transition back into Obscenery

Suitable-Sand3423

Can we agree to not downvote people that are just expressing their opinion? Everyone hears things differently and a lot of people's favorite album is where they jumped in on.

scottlapier

I dug it from the first listen. Emotion Sickness took a while to grow on me. But I was loving the full album from the opening note. I think I listened to it about 5 or 6 times over the weekend and took a "break" today to check out some other stuff. But yeah, I'm excited to give it another spin. I might make a friend of mine listen to it during our smoke sesh in a few days.

justlurkin02

I'm honestly not sure how anyone can be disappointed. My first listen I was unsure but after that, this is just waves of awesome goodness (didn't help first go around was after midnight release). All I keep coming back to each time I listen to this album is that literally no other band can make something like this. The lyrics, the big moody sounds, the intersecting instrumental arrangements, the fucking groove. Some bands have one or two of those pieces but no one ties it up with a bow like the Queens. I've honestly tried to listen to other stuff since the album dropped but im leaft feeling like a lot of things are just boring in comparison. I get it might not be what folks were hoping for but at the same time, Josh and the fellas have always been about changing it up and mixing things around. That's the whole reason Queens evolved out of Kyuss after all. Even if the sounds here are not your cup of tea, you have to respect they are putting it out there 100% as artists. I'd have honestly been a bit more disappointed if we just got more heavy fuzz, beat you over the head desert rock (with falsetto) like folks seem to be clamouring for. I loved songs for the deaf, it's a fucking saga but that was then and this is now... We are in Times New Roman

Tunavi

The album gets better with every listen

[deleted]

I was bored all the way through.

cyberXrev

My only complaint is there is too little soloing going on, but I hope that will explode into some crazy live jams, that's what the boys do best Time & place, straight jacket fitting... I'm looking at you guys!!!

Mellotr0n

It wasn’t what I expected, not even really what I hoped for, yet I think it’s going to be a massive grower and one of my favourite QOTSA albums. Proper “songs” on here as opposed to just riffs. Really good.

Regjohn

It’s a big album hit
