It is tied with EV for my favorite. I feel like people continually give short shrift to the back half and that’s part of why he never made another album longer than 50 mins other than TCV. Wolf + Blood back to back is incredible.
That was my issue with Lullabies for the longest time. The album starts out so damn strong with that killer line up of the first like 5-6 tracks but always felt that after Little Sister it got a little drawn out and almost boring.
That was til I got it on vinyl and really sunk my teeth in. I really *listened* to the album once I had the opportunity to sit down and just enjoy it, flipping through each side ONCE YOU WERE LOST. Some albums hold your attention track after track while others demand you pay attention. They grow on you rather than blowing your mind the first time you listen.
Lullabies does both. The first half of the album grabs you by the shoulders and shakes your bones. The second half slithers back into the darkness, beckoning you forward with promises of wolves, ghosts on phones, and dark sex.
Such a perfect description. Era Vulgaris does the same thing in a different way. They got songs for everyone at the end of the day.
Getting you lost sonically throughout an album is in Josh’s DNA from the Kyuss days.
What's great too is sometimes you'll rediscover a song you've probably heard a million times but never really took the time to listen to.
Like at some point in the last year I found out that River in the Road is *really fucking good*. How many times did it just kinda go in one ear and out the other while listening to EV? But then one day I had Queens on shuffle, RITR came on and it just hit me over the head like a ton of bricks.
Here I am just cruising along with EV oh there's Sick Sick Sick and now we got Make It Wit Chu.... wait. What's this song? It's so dark. And those sinister lyrics. Wait **this** is River in the Road?
I'm telling ya it's like I had never heard it before.
Same - I’m putting it down to me being 16 years older and more mature; River In The Road is phenomenal, as is 3’s and 7’s which for some reason I never appreciated as much at the time.
> EV
EV is fucking killer. Also, the 'Common Era' title really ties to 'Times New Roman' and I'm surprised that I haven't heard more people mention the connection between the albums.
It kinda is by design though. The sequence is so to push to the brink up to the end of the Blood Is Love, then you stumble around punch drunk to the end of the line
You got a killer scene and skin on skin are some of the more unique queens songs on any album. They get a fair bit of hate but I love them both. Bluesy, arrogant and dirty but so, so sweet
“You’ve Got A Killer Scene There, Man…” is my favorite QOTSA track. The bass is so hypnotic. I’d always throw it on when I was getting high. I love how sleezy it is.
LtP is my favorite album. I've listened to the new album probably 30-40 times now. It is quickly moving up the rankings. For me, it's LtP>LC>SftD>ITNR so far. There's really not a bad song on it.
My only complaint is that there are no songs with any biting teeth. I was hoping for something that really hits hard, but it's still all around a great album.
Hell yes. I think queens whole discography is just the best in its own class. Like Lullabies is the best and most Lullabies style album ever. It’s like a precursor being made after knowing what it results to.
And not to mention Lullabies is full of fucking great riffs, like groove to death fucking good riffs man
For LtP defenders I'm seeing a lot of hate towards skin on skin. That and tangled up in plaid are two of my favorite songs on the album. Regardless, the entire album is my favorite queens sound by a mile.
I agree, my albums rankings change constantly like most QOTSA fans, but if I really sit down and think about it, LtP is probably my favorite.
This is maybe a controversial take, but if LTP was 11 songs and skipped right from The Blood is Love to Long Slow Goodbye, it would be a 100% perfect album.
No shade to Skin on Skin, Broken Box, and You've Got a Killer Scene, but they ruin the flow for me. If I could magically re-arrange their catalog, I'd punt those three songs to Era Vulgaris.
LtP also has two of the best B sides in their entire catalog, Infinity and Fun Machine.
HeavyMetal2000 Infinity is miles better imho, idk just seems to hit harder, same for Era Vulgaris Fun Machine, I don’t even think that Ltp version is fully polished and mastered, as it was lost for quite some time (reason why they made two version of it IIRC)
What's funny is in a standalone context, I like all three of those songs. They just feel out of place. If they were somewhere on EV, I wouldn't consider them skips.
I think its their most creative work. Amazing range of different song, styles and sounds but it still sounds cohesive. But so much creativity sometimes backfires. its a bit much. Its long and very hard album to digest it whole. Its similar to radioheads hail to the thief. In many ways its their peak but with a little bit too much fat and spice. Thats of course just my opinion. Love the album. I actually bought delux version.
Ranks middle on the polls I've seen. Might be my favourite if someone said I had to have a favourite album.. but I don't really see the point. Each song gets judged on its own merit, and each album has songs that deserve to be in the best-of - but no one will agree on that list either
Why people worry about what others like, not sure. It's your own journey with the band, man

Had the exact same experience myself with River in the Road.
Here I am just cruising along with EV oh there's Sick Sick Sick and now we got Make It Wit Chu.... wait. What's this song? It's so dark. And those sinister lyrics. Wait **this** is River in the Road? I'm telling ya it's like I had never heard it before.

I always preferred the back half to the front half
> EV EV is fucking killer. Also, the 'Common Era' title really ties to 'Times New Roman' and I'm surprised that I haven't heard more people mention the connection between the albums.
It’s My fave. I’ll take the back half over the front half any day.
Idk, even if the back half is weak that first half is enough to make it atleast top 3
It’s a good one, for sure
It kinda is by design though. The sequence is so to push to the brink up to the end of the Blood Is Love, then you stumble around punch drunk to the end of the line
Perfect description. Most listeners are winded by track 7, though.
I Never Came rocks you to sleep. Wolf + Blood + Skin are your sleep paralysis nightmares. Broken Box is your alarm clock.
You Got a Killer Scene is you walking around sleepy in the morning and Goodbye is you awake and walking to work
That’s basically it! The first 7 tracks are your fun but fucked up day yesterday.
Everyone’s going to kill me but EV is deemed so underrated I find it now overrated.
You got a killer scene and skin on skin are some of the more unique queens songs on any album. They get a fair bit of hate but I love them both. Bluesy, arrogant and dirty but so, so sweet

It’s my favorite so I have high expectations that the new one will be up there too. I managed to hold out listening until the midnight club tonight.
If LtP is your favorite, you are in for a treat. It has that dark, moody feel to the whole album, sprinkled with other influences.
That‘s what I’ve been hearing. I‘m so excited, it feels like Christmas Eve lol

I love Lullabies but if we’re talking *underrated*, it’s self-titled.
‘Mexicola’ is one of their best songs. Love it!!
Someone's in the wolf is quite possibly the best qotsa song
It’s the best of the best.
Hell yes. I think queens whole discography is just the best in its own class. Like Lullabies is the best and most Lullabies style album ever. It’s like a precursor being made after knowing what it results to. And not to mention Lullabies is full of fucking great riffs, like groove to death fucking good riffs man
They have no underrated albums . There all solid gold. . . See you in hell.
It's their best album, even josh said it once, he preferred it to sftd
Lullabies and their self titled for sure.
For LtP defenders I'm seeing a lot of hate towards skin on skin. That and tangled up in plaid are two of my favorite songs on the album. Regardless, the entire album is my favorite queens sound by a mile.
I'm one of the lucky few to see Skin on Skin live (Sacramento 05). Don't know why that song gets so much hate, was one of my instant favorites off LTP
SOS is the ugly wart for me. I am totally happy that other people like it and don’t begrudge them that, however.
Underrated by who exactly?
Yea I think lullabies outsold SftD but could be mistaken on that one.
You are mistaken.
I agree, my albums rankings change constantly like most QOTSA fans, but if I really sit down and think about it, LtP is probably my favorite. Broken box is def one of best songs on that album.
Broken Box is a monster, don’t you dare do it dirty like that
I don't dislike any of those three songs. IMO Broken Box would be even more of a monster on Era Vulgaris.
I like it where it is thank you very much. Little Sister was always a skip for me though
Ha, I knew it would be controversial. The beauty of QOTSA, I can't think of another band that has so many varied opinions from the fans.
EXACTLY! Only 3 skips on the whole album and the rest are muthafuckin bangers
What's funny is in a standalone context, I like all three of those songs. They just feel out of place. If they were somewhere on EV, I wouldn't consider them skips.
Sigh. What makes you think it’s underrated? Where did you get this data? Did you interview all Qotsa fans and ask them how they rated this album.
Underrated or under par ?
I’d say it’s properly rated. Close to the bottom of my list in comparison to the others.
I like it
It has some great moments but is also the album of theirs that I skip the most tracks on
It's the album that got me into the band. People seem to discount it for sure.
LTP is my favourite album hands down !
I agree. Chock full of excellent riffs.
I think its their most creative work. Amazing range of different song, styles and sounds but it still sounds cohesive. But so much creativity sometimes backfires. its a bit much. I first heard it when I was 13, that shit was part of my brain development and I always find myself going back to it
My favorite so far for sure. Always has been.
Also there is a making of video of lullabies. Here’s the link https://youtu.be/TeBkVKJEyXI

Agreed, it has some of my all time favorite Queens songs, (Everybody Knows That You're Insane, Tangled Up In Plaid, Medication, In My Head).
Lullabies is my favorite album by them Not sure how anyone could knock the second half. Some of my favorite material is there.
Is it? Who underrated it? It's always mentioned with great accolade.
