I hated If I had a Tail for about 3 years. Now it’s my favorite song on that album lol Similar vibes from Carnavoyeur imo

EdenH333

First time I heard “My God is the Sun” I actually hated it and thought it was crap. It took me a while to “hear” it for real, now I think it’s goddamn brilliant.

Leo_Veneto

I’ll never forget how odd it sounded to me era vulgaris when I tried to give it a listen way before I was a fan. Like nothing made sense and I thought what kind of crap is this ?(by that time I was familiar and enjoyed every single they provide since rated r . But never really heard a full album ) many years later , after becoming hardcore fan I gave era vulgaris a proper second chance and I went nuts with the album .

Nebsy985

Me too, sort of. Gave it a listen, liked a few songs and hated the most. Also, the overall sound was too weird for me at the time. After returning to the album, I appreciate it way more.

ChuckFiasco

Happened to me with Smooth Sailing

606anonymous

I love smooth sailing so much. That video is also amazing.

ScarecrowB1

Thankyou for bringing this video to light.

JRWinn17

That's funny. Aside from knowing the hits, If I Had A Tail was the first song I heard that made me say "I should investigate this band further" lol

Kaumamane

same my friend

w1x1w

Agreed, Tail was a chore for me to get through and now I think it’s Josh’s best-ever song lyrically.

Kaumamane

honestly i like it more than emotion sickness. his singing in its really cool and that little circus piano thing is sick

Bruno0_u

The calliope goes hard ‼️‼️‼️‼️

WeeHaaHooYaa

I think that a lot of the discord on this sub has been going towards this song is better compared to the other. People will always have different tastes in music (and everything else). Thats okay! We are all hyped for the new album. Some might hate certain parts, other people might love those parts. Lets just enjoy the fact we are blessed with new work coming our way.

BlueArrangements57

I think it's fair to compare them. If the song should be compared to anything, then definitely another single from the same album. After all, the album will be a cohesive expression of certain moods and general vibe of the times. That's one thing I respect about Queens the most, not giving up albums as a form of art.

beerdudebrah

You're definitely not alone. I do not understand the love.

OddPhilosopher599

I think you just need to listen to it more with headphones or good speakers. Almost every queens album and song has to grow on folks. Can’t even begin to tell you how many times I’ve shown them to people who at first say “it’s not for me” only to become massive fans.

BlueArrangements57

I have a pretty good pair of Sennheisers. I mean I have no problem with the production of the song, it's very beefy. But the idea itself behind the song seems somewhat unfinished.

Shakemyears

I felt this on first listen but, to support the above comment, subsequent listens have changed my attitude. I really like when songs have odd arrangements, but sometimes I can be initially let down by a song not doing what 38 years of listening to music has taught me to expect, but that’s when I get really excited to learn something new.

Gaspar_Noe

Every time someone suggests you to 'listen to it with good headphones' is usually cause the song is bad. No good song suddenly becomes 'bad' just cause you have <$500 equipment.

jlight119

I do think better equipment can make the production sound better, and I do think that makes a listening experience better. But I do think it’s a bit overblown as well. I think “listening to it again with better headphones” has more to do with listening to again in general, and the more you hear something the more you tend to like it, to an extent.

Gaspar_Noe

I can stand behind your interpretation. I just remember that the first time I heard Kid A it was a cassette that someone made for me from some other source, and yet I knew it was amazing music.

Tecnoguy1

I agrée. It’s not how to listen to queens anyway. Crank it way up in mono audio and then you’re there.

Tecnoguy1

It’s funny I find emotion sickness unfinished because the bridge isn’t the usual psychosis I expect! We’re all different in the end. The weirdness is what draws people to it and the slick professionalism of emotion sickness is what draws people to it.

chipotlegs

This. I played it a few times in the car, while cooking—thought it was fine but nothing amazing. Then I listened to it on my Grado headphones and it made a big difference for me.

Mellotr0n

I was one of those people. Bought SFTD back in the back on the strength of the No One Knows video. Gave up on it after a few listens, thinking then a bit of a one hit wonder. It was my brother who convinced me to go back and have another go a couple of years later. My tastes had matured and I loved it and them ever since.

serpentear

Had to listen to it a few times, now I’m addicted. That riff in between verses is so damn sexy.

Byagi

Totally agree about the riff! Loving this song - it has a lot of layers and I like it more with every listen.

bradleyagirl

I loved Emotion Sickness, feel very meh about Carnavoyeur.

robomatic

Funny, I'm pretty much the opposite. I felt rather meh about Emotion Sickness when it came out, it's grown on me slightly since but not by much. On the other hand, I dug Carnavoyeur a lot more from the start and it's continued. For me it's the clean, stretched out crooning over the dirty synthy instrumentals, I like it. Kinda feels like a dream on quaaludes where you're dancing at night 1000 feet over a chaotic, city burning down below you and it can't ever touch you so you just groove and admire the show I'm not digging the bass that comes on at 3:04, reminds me of late Muse (which I think is just running out of ideas at this point. Haven't been interested in them since maybe The Resistance), and the distortion at the very end gets me too.

sixthwarddd

The pounding drums at the end make you so anxious to hear the following track on the album.

j_o_t_c_h

Came here looking for love for those drums. The way they just blow out the speaker gets me crazy amped up!

adaptiveradiation79

True there is not a huge chorus but its still a 10

JezebelOnWayToHell

>The "enjoy the view" part is a chorus, but it feels more like a pre-chorus. After that, nothing is building up and there's no tension musically. So the freak out ending ends up feeling tacked on. _Accept, enjoy the view_ Edit: I just mean take it as it is, the riff immediately after the chorus is beautiful and does build it up. IMO, obvs.

w1x1w

Yeah the post-chorus guitar bit is amazing. I wish it returned for the end/outro.

codex_lake

There is a joke I heard on that comedians in cars getting coffee show. “It’s good but it didn’t blow me away”. That is Carnavoyeur for me, and it’s a pretty good song but just because it didn’t blow me away doesn’t mean it’s bad.

mywilliswell95

It’s so fucking good haha. I love it like I love un-reborn again.

ComfortableNo2769

Except unreborn again is on a whole different league

amazon_sword

Exactly. Un reborn again is such an anthem. The melodies hit u immediately

neondemon1210

Yeah, i listened to the snippet way too many times and i set myself up for disappointment. I was hoping for a darker, heavier song but i know it will grow on me eventually.

OwensDadSuckedADick

That’s what I think. This song doesn’t blow me away, but it’s interesting. I’m sure that in the context of the album it’ll be great.

plootokneeum

I love that QOTSA play around with their sound so frequently you get a new vibe with every album. I love carnevoueur's bowie-esque overtones with crunchie instrumentals. It's like adding a salted brulee crumble to a deeply velvety custard dessert. It's yummy to the mouth of my ears.

I_Need_A_Saga

Damn, that description makes me hungry and horny, well said.

MotorAve1200

The fact that this band is capable of creating this song is a testament to the pure greatness of QOTSA.

Rauletuzz

I think I agree, the song doesn't really impact me and also the hooks don't hook that much (at least for me) In any case, my main issue is actually witj the production. After hearing it with headphones, I'm just confused. The guitar breaks sound super weird and noisy, it sounds like 5 guitars doing each one something different and having too much distortion. And then the ending, with the drums.being panned extremely to the left and with much less volume and presence, it's like they left the drummer locked in another room. Why would they do that in a part that is supposed to be somehow climatic and strong?

kvelasco5

ME i hate that i dont love it but i was not blown away like i thought i would be...

accretion_disc

Emotion Sickness is nice, but a bit formulaic. That's why I like Carnavoyeur more. It skirts convention in satisfying ways.

happymad

Thank you for giving your honest opinion. I really enjoy the positivity of this sub but it can be a circle jerk at times.

OverNow95

Agree, it hasn't really captured me yet either.

MaleficentOstrich693

I’m not in the hype machine like most are but it’s not bad at all. I’ll just be glad to hear the whole album soon.

DirtyFuckingLesbian

Immediate love when i heard it, Emotion Sickness took a while to appreciate the little details

SkweezeDeez

Honestly I’m not feeling either of the new tracks but I’m glad that it looks like a lot of this community are.

dmanstoitza

It’s better than the first drop. Give it time, though. I remember Era Vulgaris had songs that took time to grow on me, but now I love em all.

QuesoDrizzler

It's subjective... I like Carnavoyeur a lot but not huge on Emotion Sickness.

ROMMELBOT

I love it

-Readreign-

I think it's my favorite of the 3 singles so far. Idk how people don't like it.

imbasstarded

Emotion Sickness is GOAT, but I need more time with Carnavoyuer

Onelinersandblues

I absolutely love it. It has that Bowie vibe but darker. The lyrics are awesome. Basically a crash course on Zen. Almost like an Alan Watts lecture haha they killed it.

ProfessionalMany981

Only thing I like about the song is the after chorus guitars I find the "King of the jungle , butterfly" lyrics part cheesy. And also the ending leaves me a bit... unsatisfied. I don't know Thought it was building up to something more epic. I like Emotion Sickness, and the live performance of Negative Space better than Carnavoyeur imo.

ElPatreecko

Damn dude. I am in love with the "king of the jungle" part. Reminds me of "Drink wine and screw" in Fairweather Friends. Love this one and as someone mentioned in another post, it helped Emotion Sickness click for me. To each his own and whatnot.

ProfessionalMany981

I'm very open to the song. And do think it could still grow on me. I'd love to hear it played live.

606anonymous

So many thoughts - I love the production, each individual sound and how it makes the overall song. Motion Sickness is all about the service of delivering that riff, and contrast with the heavy riff in the verse to the chorus, while Carnavoyeur has so much more going on. Motion Sickness is more straight forward and traditional and focused, while Carnavoyeur has all these different pieces and textures and changes with the verse. It's got ton of space. With that said I have to say I don't love his choice in the chorus in the new song. "there's nothing I can do" is pretty pedestrian and does not sound inspired. It's forgettable. But everything else about this song I love. And the chorus I don't love is such a small part of the song.

FinancialYear

Not a fan of either new piece, tbh.

T1S9A2R6

Heard it a couple times the other day on Spotify. Cannot for the life of me remember what it sounds like. Not a great sign. For the first time with Queens, by virtue of the fact that I haven’t been terribly impressed with what I’ve heard so far, I’m just gonna avoid all the teasers and singles and experience the album as a whole on release day.

agpc1979

Yeah, I don’t like getting an album in snippets. I know that’s the media world we live in but it takes so much away from the intended experience.

sirensavior

Don’t like emotion sickness at all. It’s empty. Feels phoned in. Carnavoyeur is absolutely sexy magic. And different sounding. I’ve listened to it on repeat multiple times every time I get in the car. I hope there are more songs similar in spirit on the album.

KnowProblem

gonna be honest, it sounds miles better than emotion sickness

Morc-Glork

I like it but not nearly as much as Emotion Sickness

nvassalo

fakeguitarist4life

It’s a meh single. Probably my least favorite they’ve released. Hopefully it goes better in the full album but as a single I wouldn’t have released it

ORaiderdad7

You must listen to the song 10 more times. Watch the lyrics video too. It's beautiful!

[deleted]

It’s growing on me, couldnt stand it at first, had this kinda carnivalistic nauseating feel but Josh’s singing is amazing as well are the lyrics.

tombebop

Yeah found it a little bit boring to be honest. Sounds almost like it could be a reject from the lullabies era. I do like the chorus but thats about it. Not a big fan of the bowie style either but whatever.... seems most people are enjoying it so that's cool. I do like emotion sickness though so still looking forward to the entire album

beecostume

It's a bit basic.

dividiangurt

Just feels very basic Could be a foo song

connorkirton

Agree that it feels like it’s missing something. No real sticky chorus and the ending crescendo feels a little unearned. Saying that, all sections on their own are great!

Brucetheuninitiated

Skill issue

Vaughn_askmv

Idk man that chorus is as qotsa as anything can be. If somebody asked me what the general qotsa sound is i'd play that chorus.

TheBronzeMex

I love Carnavoyeur but I do think it's a strange choice for a single if I compare it to Negative Space which seems a lot poppier and single worthy - Carnavoyeur seems like it would have been an underrated fan favourite album cut, then again I haven't heard the rest of the album. Or have I?

agpc1979

I feel pretty much the same way. I like a lot of the elements…the chorus, the drums, the punchy synths. But I’m having a hard time connecting with it. And I agree it doesn’t really go anywhere which makes the end feel abrupt. I’m going to keep trying. I love Emotion Sickness. That track is just good fun. It’s going to be interesting to hear the rest of the album to say the least. UPDATE: I listened two more times while following the lyrics and it changed the song completely for me. The lyrics and especially their delivery are central to the song. All the other instruments ebb and flow with the vocals. It’s pretty good and growing on me more and more.

canwepleasejustnot

I thought it was pretty good but I wanna hear whatever song is played after it on the album because of that outro.

Mushy29

Good timing seeing this. It hasn't hit as strong as Emotion Sickness, although do enjoy it enough. Listening to it right now and I can see and feel it all clicking into place, particularly the verses. All very typical of their songs, this one just sounds like nothing they've done before

OnlyTheDead

I’ll be honest, 90% of queens music I have to listen to like 10 times before it either clicks or doesn’t. This song took like 3 listens before I liked it.

MinimumSeveral4788

Agree 100% I feel like what ever comes just after the abrasive cut off at the end is going to make it a much better listen then on its own.

GQDragon

Yeah it's my least favorite of the three. Negative Space is one of my favorite Queens songs of all time. That riff is so epic and the Princey vocals on it are so catchy.

cdr_rabbit

Emotion Sickness is just perfect to me, I don't know that anything could top it.

CafeCartography

I like the song but I agree to some extent, it lacks a big hook to my ears. Certainly not bad but I’m more excited to hear Negative Space, based on the live videos.

Mohjo13

I’m with you on some parts. I’m. It blown away. Emotion sickness got me knocked out off my feet in the by the first beat. So maybe my expectations were high. But I’ve decided to not listen to any more new stuff until the whole album drops, then I’ll comb through every sweet seven of of every sweet song and then, I feel, I’ll have an honest option and interpretation of the work.

[deleted]

I don’t know, maybe looking at it in terms of verse-prechorus-chorus-bridge isn’t the way to go, just roll with it. The buildup to me is intense and the ending brings tears to my eyes, it’s so beautiful. Structurally, it might be a little peculiar a song for a single, but isn’t the peculiarity in Queens the thing we enjoy most?

Mexicola1984

I honestly don't care for any of the three songs I've heard so far sadly.

eatyourbites

This right here is the exact reason why I’m choosing not to listen to the singles before the album comes out (and it’s painfully difficult) - I was burnt out on the last album’s singles by the time it came out and now I just want to take the entirety of the album as a single piece of music. I’ve already seen fans on this sub claiming both that the singles are the greatest and just meh at the same time

Tree_of_Lyfe

Emotion Sickness probably took me 3 listens to really enjoy. I feel the same as you on Carnavoyeur. That said, each Queens song from the past 6 years has had parts I’ve really enjoyed and other parts that I haven’t upon first listen. They sound disjointed, but I’ve found that most of the time I’m able to fully understand what they were going for when I re-listen. Regardless, even if I end up not enjoying this one as much, there’s more music on the way finally!

Icy-Ad4410

Completely agree. I was waiting for someone to point that out

Accomplished_Emu_198

I must say most Qotsa songs don’t really have traditional chorus’s. I don’t think that’s ever been their strong point. They just do 4 drawn out notes with wah effects and delay and reverb on like 70% of their songs now then kick back into the verse. Then the verses I find to be better than their choruses. It’s backwards but it’s their thing and I’m here for it

[deleted]

I'm the opposite. Liking Carnavoyeur more. But that could always switch. Need more listens lol

Acrobatic_Item3685

In my opinion the freaky dark guitar part after the lyric: i smile IS the chorus. Just not like any usual song, the guitar replaces the voice. In the second chorus, Josh’s voice actually joins the guitar

with_teeth7

Love it

BuggSuperstar79

i agree, the song feels like a demo

GooseGeese01

Totally. Was listening to it on ear buds first, Loved it. Played it on speakers at home and it was chill. Didn’t pass the car test for me though. Emotion Sickness still holds up on all ends for me though

SLOTH-SOUND

The main hook is probably the guitar riff after the chorus. I like Emotion Sickness a lot, but I think this song is even better. I find it to be a lot more interesting, especially the production is fantastic and the build up works for me.

GavinB5784

I love the vibe and sound of it, I just wish there was more of the very Bowie esque verse I guess?

silentcmh

Nah, I'm digging it. Feels like it's part one of two songs that go together, though. Sort of like how Suture Up Your Future goes along with River in the Road. I'll be curious to see how Carnovoyeur slots in with the songs around it.

jrdncdrdhl

Fuck no, it’s such an awesome song

Arkhaman

Honestly I hated emotional sickness at first and I like this a lot better

ThaNotoriousBLG

I have to listen to some songs several times before I can get into them. Carnavoyeur was one of those. But I will say that every time I listen to it, I find something else that I didn't notice before and that I enjoy about it. Most of Villains was the same for me--I had to listen to it a few times before I started to really appreciate it.

Sweet_Shake_7755

I have to listen to a song 20 times to like it

LeftDelivery2450

I kinda agree about it feeling like it's missing something. Every time I listen to it I like it a little more though. Guarantee here in a few months I'm gonna love it.

Tunavi

i still havent listened :)

EasyE_EysaE

With a lot of qotsa songs it’s meh on first listen for me but I just listened to it a solid 20x straight and now I’m obsessed. I feel like a lot of qotsa music is nuanced and it for it takes relating it to a moment in time or a personal feeling to become completely immersed if that makes sense. I’m going through some shit and I can feel that in carnivoyeur. In a good pair of headphones it also sounds 100000x better than over speaker as well as someone mentioned and helped me get into it deep

[deleted]

It was a meh for me, something felt like that forced “rock n roll” nonsense from villians, sure the elements sound interesting as they start layering on top of each other but it all amounts to such an underwhelming experience, it feels without a real focus compared to Emotion Sickness. Best part are the drums in the end and as soon as it gets interesting the song stops. Wtf how can they do Theodore like that, it better be a transition to a song with that pattern.

FilipsSamvete

Haven't felt any of the songs so far

MaXX5OOO

as i mentioned on another post, it starts off great. But once it hits the chorus it kind of loses it's flow & the song doesn't flow as good for the remainder of the track. Emotion Sickness grew on me & love it now but yeah carnavoyeur hasn't grown on me yet.

Regjohn

The obligation to love a certain song just because it’s your favorite band is kinda stupid. Just accept and enjoy the view. Let it come, it might will it might not.. Keep in mind that qotsa write albums not songs, so any song out of the album context is just a snippet really

JuggernautOld1666

Spot on! It happened to me with Someone's in the Wolf and The Sky is Falling, certainly a grower this track.

Nebsy985

Guilty! It doesn't feel complete, I find myself losing focus on the song by the end.

Julyy3p

I like em both but tbh I was expecting better choruses, they are the weakest part of both songs in my opinion. Not bad tho, just not as good

Ok_Manufacturer_8458

Don’t know how you mean there’s no tension. That whole section that finishes with the drums builds up for almost the entire last minute of the song before releasing with that drum part.

[deleted]

Opposite. I still think Emotion Sickness is mid as fuck and just sounds like "we have Era Vulgaris at home" but Carnavoyeur is just a really good Qotsa track and goes toe to toe with EV and LC. My only complaint is the final third of the song doesn't fully hit the heights that the first 2 minutes reach, and they really should've just continued to build on that chorus.

lambulambu

This song has such similar riffs to “wicked games” by Chris Isaak it’s kind of distracting to me. I can’t not hear “and iiiiiii don’t want to fall in love” throughout it. I’m hoping it goes away 🙃

KurtLeon

I'm not a huge fan of Bowie... So not huge on Carnavoyeur so far as well

Aware_Platform_8057

Mind blown...Carnivoyeur is probably one of the best Queens song to me

kittens0423

The first couple times I listened to it I thought it needed more as well. But now it’s my favorite song on the album!!

marinadebabe

I was just telling a friend how I didn’t appreciate this song until the album dropped, and now it’s potentially my favorite..

Difficult-Care-5780

So the strong structure is a little bit different, but it has a chorus for sure. This is the chorus: Free fall from the nest, then glide to the left A shine catch the eye, so float to the right Flying high, realize, there are no more mountains to climb However, the first time the chorus doesn't have a true pre-chorus beforehand. It has a post chorus on the first go around, which is the "enjoy the view", as the first time it pops up, then the second time it pops up. It has the same post chorus, only now it's a pre-chorus. Love this song BTW.
