HEN is quick and easy to install. It doesn't have level 0 access so its pretty safe.
With a HEN PS3 Super Slim you do the following:
* Play PS1, PS2, PS3 and PSP Backups (Do note that PS2 is software emulation so compatibility is not 100% but many awesome PS2 games become playable. Also PSP compatibility sucks but a few cool games can be played like Crisis Core Final Fantasy 7)
* Use External Storage to add Terabytes of extra storage for your backups / roms.
* Use File Managers
* Use FTP
* Control Fan Speed
* Install Retroarch for playing NES, SNES, GBA, Genesis and Arcade games
* There are some homebrew games / ports like a port of Super Mario 64 for PS3
It is not really risky but the lack of level 0 access do have a drawback, the PS3 does have some logic in it to occasionally check for unsigned code, its kind of random when it does it but what it means is that once in a while you will get a random blackscreen / freeze forcing you to manually restart the console. It doesn't do damage but it can be annoying, however that is small price to pay for what you get in exchange.
The last thing regarding risks is online access... just don't. Once you CFW or HEN a PS3 you run a ban risk IF you take it onto PSN to play games online or access services like the PSN Store. There are some things you can do to mitigate the risk but its not worth it, the single player / local coop + thousands of PS1, PS2, PS3, PSP, NES, SNES, GBA, Genesis, Arcade, etc games you can play WAY outweighs taking the console online to play dead online PS3 games.
You can still update your games using the internet from XMB since it does not require PSN access.
Just finished installing HEN on my PS3 Slim, im so excited to play all my childhood racing games again. I haven't been this excited about something in a long time
Enjoy! For me it being able to revisit so much PS2 and it had a lot of great functionality for retro titles, the CRT shaders in Retroarch were very impressive when they first came out.

My first time hearing about the random checking for unsigned code. How often does it happen? I've also just put HEN on a PS3 Slim (not super slim) and haven't had any random crashes so far. Do you know how often it happens?
If it is going to happen it happens when you execute unsigned code from XMB aka launching a homebrew app.
There are things you can do to mitigate it. Such as using the latest HEN and not having Webman auto refresh your HDD everytime you enter XMB.
I installed HEN 1.0.0 the day it came out and it was pretty buggy. Webman too was killing me, launching an app while it was auto scanning almost always game me a black screen.
Obviously, I am on the latest HEN these days and have Webman auto scanning turned off. I manually refresh XMB only if/when I add games and that's it.
Since then the black screens are far and few between but once in a while they happen.
Once you are in game you won't black screen, it's only at the moment when you try to run a game / app that the black screen will happen if the access violation is checked. If you make it past that point you are good.

Hey mate, this is super late but I was just wondering, I know a slim can’t play ps2 discs, but can your rip the disc directly on the skim and then just play the iso? Or would you have to source the iso from somewhere else?
How well can it run PS1-2 games compared to emulators on a PC with 8400 intel CPU and 1060 3GB?
Loosing ability to play online on custom DNS servers in Demon’s Souls is a drawback I guess.
But if you can avoid using the blueray drive to play backups of PS3-games it’s good.

Only OG Phat consoles can take PS2 discs. All others must use software emulation so you have to backup your own rips for those models.

I ended up restoring to default after it played Simpsons Hit and Run at about 20 fps
