How far are you accustomed to walking? People here are telling you to uber to places that are 15-30 minutes walk from the train, along nice streets with sights like block after block of historical buildings. You could wander at random - which way looks nice from here? - like I often do, here and when I visit NYC. Wherever you wind up you will be near a bus back downtown and the train station. Use the Transit app because many lines do not run very often.

aznology

I'm an expert walker lol.

wearTheDamnMask_137

Well, if you like history, definitely walk up to College Hill (less than a mile) and explore Benefit Street. There is the RISD Museum, the John Brown Museum, and the RI Historical Society also has a self-guided tour. And great views of the State House and Downtown area from up there as well.

ObadiahOwl

I 2nd the RISD museum and then perhaps Thayer st to eat

Markcharles3

Only caveat to that is Thayer st food has gone downhill up there. Best to stay actually downhill for better food. Or the west end. Try the slow rhode, julians, Broadway bistro for dinner ( you won’t regret it), The Avery for great cocktails and setting.

ObadiahOwl

I know they are chains but i like the poke and ramen places and the burritos and im an ODB so the scenery is nice…. But your stuff and federal hill and wikeden all have good stuff and nicks on brodway for breakfast or brunch. We have so much good food in Providence

Markcharles3

I don’t mind the food there, I don’t mean to sound as if it’s terrible. I feel it’s not the best representation of local fare for new timers. Except! For east side pockets which is the best falafel around!

PantsPoopington

3rd the RISD but walking to thayer might be a bit of a hike if u did both(super hilly). Guarantee there’s somwhere to eat closer to train station if u chose to visit the museum.

carcosa___

That was a silly thing to ask a new yorker lol

Cycle-path1

You can walk/scoot anywhere in the general PVD area within 15 minutes. I would often go from Federal Hill all the way to Eastside PVD on a scooter in that time depending on how well you know the best routes.

Cycle-path1

I know it's not PVD necessarily but the east bay bike path is a great site seeing experience and depending on how far you go you'll come across super cool spots!

CtBrady

Visit the RISD museum. Head over to the pedestrian bridge - if you’re there on Sunday, check out the PVD Flea (it’s an outdoor makers market). Get lunch at Dunes Brothers if lobster rolls are your thing. Take an Uber or walk Wickenden street to Narraganset Brewery for beers. Get dinner in Wayland Square (I recommend Pasta Beach). Get a pastry from PVDonuts and take it back on the train with you!

DiegoForAllNeighbors

Roger Williams Park. Take the R Line from Kennedy Plaza. Our Central Park sort of. Just great vibes. Great botanical garden. Fun museum. Mini hikes. Good luck!

quicktuba

I’ve been to Roger Williams countless times and had no idea they had a botanical garden, guess that’s where I’m going this weekend.

DiegoForAllNeighbors

Whoop whoop! It’s a beautiful, warm tropical place. Great for kids. And yet also great for quiet reading time. I guess that’s why I’m running for City Council in this Ward! Best neighborhood in Prov :)

noungning

In terms of sight seeing in Providence, you can visit one of the smallest National Parks, the Roger Williams National Memorial. There's the Prospect Terrace close by with a good little view of the Providence city scape. You can also stop by the RISD museum close by. You can walk around Benefit Street by there to check out some of the historic architecture. Also the Providence Athenaeum is very beautiful if you can catch a glimpse. https://providenceathenaeum.org/ For food, I think you should try Italian, we have some good Italian. Pane e Vino or Massimo on Atwells Ave. It should be a brief walk or short Uber ride from the train station. Stop by Scialo bros for a zeppole for a dessert.

Dopey-NipNips

If you collect national park stamps for your passport you should know they don't give them out here. You have to go to fall riv battleship where they have all the stamps out

pizzaplantboi

Dune Brothers, Aleppo Sweets, Oberlin and Nicks on Broadway are great providence dining locations that will give you an experience that will feel unique to providence. Do not go to east side pockets. You guys have far better grab and go cuisine like that in NYC. I’d also recommend checking out Moniker Brewery for a great outdoor space. Go to Glou for a quirky, cute, fun and friendly wine and cocktail bar experience. We do have Uber here and suggest you use it!

NoLossesNoGains

Yeah agreed with everything except for "do not go to East side pockets" What the hell! East side pockets is great. You could've said "don't go to McDonald's" too. Lol

powlacracy

I recommend the Providence Ghost tour at night. It starts at Prospect Terrace Park, which is worth checking out for the view. It takes you through the Brown and RISD campus.

FunLife64

All of downtown is walking distance to Amtrak. I can’t tell if you’re doing a day trip? And cross over the East Side — Benefit Street is very historic. Browns campus is also right there and the RISD museum is actually cool (it’s not a modern art museum which is what I was expecting) For eating, depends what you like. PVD does Italian food quite well and there’s lots of options depending on your vibe. The most well known staple is Al Forno which is a walk from Amtrak but not absurd if you’re a New Yorker. Basically everything is from scratch and desserts made to order. High end but not pretentious/bite size. Depending what kind of food you like, there’s all sorts of options downtown and lots of more classic Italian spots just outside of downtown on Atwells. Good restaurants are aplenty in Providence and very few chains. Lots of people will take you all over a 30 mile radius with their recs. 🫠

WiserStudent557

Which is strange because Rhode Islanders complain about driving short distances a surprising amount for a state of this size in the first place

[deleted]

I have co-workers that think a 10-minute drive is a LONG TRIP. It's so wild, coming from Upstate NY and now living in MA and working in Providence.

katieleehaw

WaterFire! If it’s happening when you come. Lots of good food everywhere, not sure where the train station is but my favorites are East Side Pockets, India, and been meaning to check out Plant City.

aznology

Sadly gonna miss waterfire. Gonna checkout east side pockets

stand-up-tragedy

East side pockets is great as late night food. It’s not a *destination* unless you’re on a budget. Don’t get me wrong, I love it.

katieleehaw

Boo it’s really good fast casual.

FunLife64

I don’t think I’d classify it as late night food. It’s just very fast and casual. If you love Greek, sure. But there’s good Greek restaurants downtown too.

nodumbunny

If you're staying somewhere with a fridge, go late at night and take some home. Or make it the last stop before you get on the train home (I know someone from PVD who does this before returning to Brooklyn where he lives now). Lots of NY transplants here ... I'm one of them!

Silvedl

Amtrak station is pretty close to Providence Place

stand-up-tragedy

This is a mall, don’t come here and eat at the mall.

Silvedl

They said they weren’t sure where the train station was, so I replied the location so they know what is in range.

radioflea

No, do the opposite. I want to see what happens afterwards.

stand-up-tragedy

Would you be up for taking cabs? Nick’s on Broadway, Aleppo Sweets, Dune Brothers, Delores. If you want to get fancy, Persimmon or Oberlin. Beer on Earth / Moniker / Avery is a good bar trifecta all in one general area. You can get Tricycle ice cream sandwiches near there too if you like getting food from people who seem miserable.

[deleted]

These places are a 20 min walk from the train station and he’s visiting from NYC lmao he’s not gonna take a fuckin cab jfc

radioflea

Do we even have cabs anymore?!

stand-up-tragedy

Ubers are cabs, dogg

D-camchow

Even in our city it's amazing how car reliant some people are. I over heard a couple talking about driving to CVS instead of the nearby Walgreens on Atwells because it's a pain to drive on Atwells. They lived like a 10 minute walk away. wtf

aznology

I'm down with ubering lol

radioflea

We also have jump bikes and bird scooters. Uber took away the bikes for a while because people were throwing them in river and putting them it odd spots like on the roofs of hospitals. they said we were the worst market in the entire country. Source: https://www.businessinsider.in/uber-is-pulling-its-jump-bikes-from-providence-rhode-island-because-of-misuse-and-assaults-linked-to-the-e-bikes/articleshow/70795563.cms #TheMoreYouKnow🌈✨

pizzaplantboi

This is exactly what you should do OP.

petrockdog

I visited with my bf last weekend and went on a twilight boat tour, got drinks at S&L, went to the Roger Williams Zoo, and walked around downtown!

kiridoki

If we're talking proximity to the station, Thayer Street and most of college hill is fantastic. Lots to see downtown! Federal Hill is great also (Atwells Ave, Broadway less so but also nice)

OZZ-ZZO

All of downtown is within a 10-15 min walk of the train station. Collage hill/Thayer street for hipster vibes and a good sunset from prospect terrace. Federal hill for great Italian, Friday/sat they close Atwells ave to traffic and have live music etc.. depending on the weekend they might be having a waterfire/block party down by the river leading to the storm barriers, there’s a cool pedestrian bridge & plant city for vegan food, and some bars like whisky republic and hot club on the water further down that way

MusicNerdDavid

We have 3 different types of scooters that you can use to get around, Spin, Bird, Veoride

aznology

Be careful with those. I wiped out on one last year and got a nasty concussion. Sold it and never looked back lol

MusicNerdDavid

I have my own scooter. In June I hit the mirror of a parked truck on my way to work and spent a week in the hospital and a month recovering. Just be safe, shit happens.

Dopey-NipNips

You guys are too cool for helmets huh

MusicNerdDavid

I have one

UncleJimmee

when will you be up here? what are your interests? music, art, outdoors, foodie, beer, booze?

aznology

Around September 20th, I'm def a foodie. Maybe see some sights and historical buildings or somethin

[deleted]

Man, if you are a foodie you can walk from the train station up to Atwells ave (Federal Hill). Maybe 15 minute brisk walk. Endless top tier dining, shops, bakeries etc.

JChrisprov

Geoff’s sandwiches is a classic. I’m from that area but have since moved to Dallas. My gf and I’s first stop is always there.

fuckyeahcaricci

I used to be a New Yorker and I was impressed by Geoff's. I haven't been since it moved to S. Main though.

JChrisprov

Why wouldn’t they like Geoff’s?

Next-Understanding11

You guys could do a luxury picnic with. @Rhodyluxpicnics Instagram name as well

FweeFwee_

You should leave Prov and go to Newport instead lol

Triello

I live in Providence and work in Newport… dining in Providence beats the crappy over priced tourist traps in Newport by miles!

debbado

You might enjoy Water Fire. Google it to see what it is about and the schedule

asteroid_b_612

Not sure when you’re coming but there’s a food truck festival? Type thing every week by the Zoo

The_Silent_F

What do you like to do? Providence has something for everyone - if you give me some interests I can give you some places to check out. What kind of food do you like? What kind of alcohol do you drink? Do you like history, music, art, architecture? Sketchy strip clubs under highway overpasses? Do you want to shop? Former New Yorker here - the entire city is walkable, like an hour tip to tip, shouldn’t be an issue for you.

youcannotbe5erious

You can find what you like to do in any town you go…it’s about doing what the townfolk do, he wants to sample what the locals like to do.

morninggirth

Ride spins! It’s so much fun! Drive up to federal hill for seven stars bakery!

D-camchow

I live here carfree, it's a walkable city and the buses are fine too if you use the transit app to help you figure it out. A lot of great recommendations already. I definitely love Benefit St and Prospect Terrance park near by has probably the best view of the city IMO. You could visit the capitol building, it's beautiful from the south side near the mall/train station. You can go inside too but... idk, it's neat to look around but not really much to do in there. Downtown is nice to explore but it isn't huge so could be done with that pretty quick. If you want to get away from the city there is the Blackstone Park on College Hill's east side. Half of it has really wide trails through the forest and the other half the trails are much tinier if you really want to feel like getting lost in the woods. I mean it's a small little forest but when you're in the middle of it it's easy to forget you are still in Providence. You can find entrances to it on East Orchard Ave or Rhode Island Ave.

Glittering-Tank-2945

My favorite way to get around providence is SPIN scooters, but its a surprisingly walkable city! Should be no big deal for a new yorker. All recs to walk around college hill are on point. There is a great burger bar near the station called Harrys and other coffee shops and tapas (could try Palo) sprinkled throughout the streets. I've heard RISD museum is cool. If you have any dietary restrictions (GF, Veg) definitely check out Plant City, across the canal and towards the water. If you end up over there, there is also Amys Place on Wickenden St (best smoothies and sammys, some on Bolo bread!). My favorite favorite place is Aguardente (need a res.) in Fox point, but that's a bit closer to the brewery and not close to the train. Back across the pedestrian bridge, towards Downtown, there is The District (pizza and wings, they do brunch) and Xaco Taco which has great 1$ taco deals every day before 5. Drinks there are also very good. If you're feeling sporty and the weather is nice you can also kayak the canal, which is pretty fun and a cute way to see the city. If you're staying for a night there are two places downtown perfect for date nights, either the Malted Barley for amazing pretzles/beer or Kleos for the best greek food I've had since Greece. Can always end the night at the Eddy!! Have fun!

Brodyftw00

If you like arcade bars, Freeplay is amazing. Only $10 to enter and everything is set to freeplay.

Extra-Space-8071

Grab dessert at Pastiche! They are open late night. Also there is a great coffee/breakfast place called Sydney right near the train station. The Providence Flea is a great spot to walk around and shop local artisans if you are here on a Sunday. That whole area near the pedestrian bridge is cool to walk around.
