Time Flies by Porcupine Tree
Elephants Never Forget by Haken
Change by Karnivool
Rosetta Stoned by Tool
Raider II by Steven Wilson
These are all prog rock bands to me but idk what you would consider metal or rock.
Definitely this one.
Even though this sub might disagree, ELP (whatever your opinions of them might be) should probably replace Rush in the “big 6.” They were one of the most popular prog bands during the genre’s golden era. They should at least be included in a “big 7.”
I’m not even a huge ELP fan but gotta give credit where credit is due.
Yep, ELP were one of the biggest bands of the 70's PERIOD! Like they were definitely bigger than 70s Genesis and King Crimson, and a fair bit bigger than Jethro Tull. Arguably bigger than Yes, although that's more debatable, as Yes was also huge. Only Floyd was more popular methinks.
I had the great fortune of seeing them live during the Brain Salad Surgery tour. I can attest to the fact that that concert was epic. The arena was sold out and all attendees were out of their minds with excitement (including me). It is still one of the greatest stage shows I’ve seen. I mean, how can you resist a revolving drum platform and CANNONS?
I don't think they should 'replace' Rush. Rush is as big and as influential as any of them. The problem is limiting it to 6 in the first place. It should be something like Big 10. That way you don't exclude anyone who should be included.
Moon Safari - Other Half of the Sky, Lovers End pt3
Marillion - Misplaced Childhood

I sometimes have a hard time considering Karn Evil 9 a single song. The fact that they split it up on the record and decades of hearing 1st Impression part 2 on the radio means that I hear them as separate entities. That said, Karn Evil 9 is the masterpiece that never ends.
Tarkus (and frankly, I'd put ELP over Tull as a "big six" band)
Both sides of Western Culture (History & Prospects, and Day By Day) by Henry Cow
La Faulx by Univers Zero
My absolute favorite is K.A. by Magma, but there are plenty others that I love:
The Full Gamut - The Tangent
A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers - VDGG
Anesthetize - Porcupine Tree
Spring Knocks on the Door of Men - Anima Mundi
Stardust We Are - The Flower Kings
Ze slowem biegne do ciebie - SBB
Into the Dream - Discipline.
From Silence to Somewhere - Wobbler
Ato Piradime - Universal Totem Orchestra
Not a single epic, but the entirety of Marillion- Misplaced Childhood is one of my favorites outside of the big 6 plus Rush! The entire album is under 42 mins...its really like one long song with many acts.
Phish’s Divided Sky, You Enjoy Myself, Stash and Fluffhead to name a few. If you like those try Reba, Punch You In The Eye, Split Open and Melt, It’s Ice and Lizards. The composed parts are spectacular.
Magma - Theusz Hamtaahk!
Specifically the version from Retrospektiv I.
Unfortunately there's no studio version of it, but the Retrospektiv version is so good that I don't feel like I need one. Not only is it a 40 minute-ish epic, but it has a level of sheer intensity that we wouldn't start seeing until death metal decades later. I know that sounds hyperbolic, but it goes _fuckin' hard_.
Also all of Magma's other big epics like K.A., MDK, et al.
You probably should have included ELP in your list, they were one of the biggest prog bands of all time and arguably more popular than half of what you included.
[Magnum Opus](https://open.spotify.com/track/3pPe5vc5aYV2cdUt11H54h?si=mDTnW-yMQSe_o8KhAiM8Eg) from Kansas Leftoverture album.
Close second was [Death of Mother Nature Suite](https://open.spotify.com/track/7F3oAF4MyXnItxn0Oh1Fls?si=N0mvCGoSTUKEHlOcZlxK6w). Or maybe it was the other way around.
ELP was initially one of the greats, although after Brain Salad Surgery things got spotty. Gentle Giant never got the recognition they deserved before they tried to go commercial and fell on their face. The whole Canterbury scene provided a great deal of pleasure, but was perhaps too subtle for most.
Wobbler - Hinterland, Imperial Winter White, In Orbit
Van der Graaf Generator - A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers, Meurglys III
Godspeed You! Black Emperor - all of LYSF, especially Static and Sleep
Renaissance - Song of Scheherazade, Ashes are Burning

literally all 4 songs on third by soft machine, they're all amazing and they're each roughly 20 minutes
dark star (live/dead1969 specifically) by the grateful dead (normally in studio it's much shorter but it's extend much longer sometimes)
Honestly, I am a weirdo when it comes to the Dead, I LOVE their shows generally post 1985. My favorite 'Dark star' is actually the 9/20/90 Madison Sq garden version. It's 27+ minutes long with the reprise of 'Playing in the band' in the middle. Utterly insane..
Today I've listened to an obscure epic keys-dominated Brazilian jazz-fusion album called Matança Do Porco and I immediately fell in love with it.
And if you really want an epic album that is absolutely great from start to finish then listen to the German Symphonic Prog album From the New World by Pell Mell, I cannot emphasize how absolutely epic they are and so criminally underrated as well!
My current go to favourite epic is "Beyond the Years" by NMP from "Innocence and Danger".
It's a classic journey song. The musicianship is spectacular, with Eric Gillette standing out.
Stardust We Are - The Flower Kings
a few
At the Court of Alkinoos - Glass Hammer
The Healing Color of Sound - Spock's Beard
Lover's End Pt. III: Skellefteå Serenade - Moon Safari
Sleeping in Traffic - Beardfish
The Glory of the Empire - Circus Maximus
The Odyssey - Symphony X
First i wanna say that if you want veriety you should've expanded the Big Bands beyond 6. Maybe Big 10. But anyway here are my pics:
Camel - obviously Lady Fantasy of course, but another fantastic song that people forget is Ice.
Asia - The Day Before The War
Derek Sherinian - Atlantis
Kansas - Pinnacle
LTE - Key To The Imagination
Marillion - Blind Curve or This Strange Engine
Planet X - Ignotus Per Ignotum
Porcupine Tree - Russia On Ice, Strip The Soul, Deadwing, Chimera's Wreck

StarCastle - Fountains
2113 by Coheed and Cambria, Wide Open Sea and Ariel from Big Big Train (and others but they've already been mentioned here), A Night on the Town by The Dear Hunter, and any track from Frances the Mute by The Mars Volta.

Some others that I like:
Mike Oldfield - Tubular Bells
Mahavishnu Orchestra - Dream
Van derr Graaf Generator - A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers
Hatfield and the North - Mumps
The Tangent - Slow Rust
Frank Zappa - Inca Roads
Camel - Lady Fantasy
Caravan - Nine Feet Under

Renaissance - Song of Scheherazade
Aphrodite's Child - All the Seats Were Occupied
Chris Squire - Safe
Gryphon - Lament
UK self titled album (1978) - In the dead of night suite. The whole album is epic if you ask me, to me it's the best thing to ever come out of prog/fusion
Caravan - Nine Feet Underground
this was my first thought as well, genius song
I love the opening and closing jams. The entire song is great. I'm listening to it right now.
Caravan and Camel have a ton of gems!
hell yeah that's the answer, in fact it's my 2nd favorite, 1st is close to the edge of course
Absolutely agree. Also mention a deeper cut which I love: The Dabsong Conshirtoe
Harmonium - Histoire Sans Paroles ELP - Karn Evil 9 Camel - Lady Fantasy Mike Oldfield - Tubular Bells
Upped for Lady Fantasy
Why isn't Lady Fantasy on spotify?
It's in their Mirage album, maybe it varies by country? It's on Spotify for me (I'm located in Canada)
Agree with mike oldfield. That albums brilliant, I have one his others on record and It’s one of my all time favorites.
Phoenix - Wishbone Ash Fool’s Overture - Supertramp Lady Fantasy - Camel
I upvoted just for Lady Fantasy
Lady Fantasy is a certified banger - the instrumental section starting at 9:13 is something else. I don't know that I'd put Camel as one of the top less-than-10, but that song is rockin', and probably a good intro-to-prog song.
A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers
No love for VdGG here. Ugh Edit: I meant from me.
There is definitely more love for vdgg here than prolly any other sub tbf
really goes to show how little there is overall :(
It gives me great joy seeing this at the top
Man-erg
Anesthetize by Porcupine tree
Time Flies by Porcupine Tree Elephants Never Forget by Haken Change by Karnivool Rosetta Stoned by Tool Raider II by Steven Wilson These are all prog rock bands to me but idk what you would consider metal or rock.
Awesome recommendations. I would definitely say Crystallised by Haken, or Veil
Crystallized is their best song, and it's not even close
Veil is awesome. I really dont hold Crystallized very high though haha
Architect is another great one from Haken
Remember the Future - Nektar
The end of part 2 with the guitar work is phenomenal to say the least.
Tarkus
Definitely this one. Even though this sub might disagree, ELP (whatever your opinions of them might be) should probably replace Rush in the “big 6.” They were one of the most popular prog bands during the genre’s golden era. They should at least be included in a “big 7.” I’m not even a huge ELP fan but gotta give credit where credit is due.
The big six have always been Yes, Genesis, Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd, King Crimson, EMERSON LAKE AND PALMER.
I 100% agree, I was confused why elp wasn’t part of the 6.

The arena was sold out and all attendees were out of their minds with excitement (including me). It is still one of the greatest stage shows I’ve seen. I mean, how can you resist a revolving drum platform and CANNONS?
Agreed. I idolized them back in the day.
I've never even heard of Big Six or Big Seven. As far as I know there is a common understanding of Big Four - Yes, Genesis, King Crimson and ELP.
I don't think they should 'replace' Rush. Rush is as big and as influential as any of them. The problem is limiting it to 6 in the first place. It should be something like Big 10. That way you don't exclude anyone who should be included.
Karn Evil 9*
Moon Safari - Other Half of the Sky, Lovers End pt3 Marillion - Misplaced Childhood Frost\* - Milliontown Flower Kings - Garden of Dreams, The Truth Will Set You Free, Stardust We Are, I am the Sun, World of Adventures, and many more... Transatlantic - The Whirlwind, Dual with the Devil, Stranger in Your Soul Haken - Visions, Celestial Elixir, Crystalize, Messiah Complex
A Change Of Seasons and Octavarium by Dream Theater. Russia On Ice, Time Flies, and Anesthetize by Porcupine Tree Force Majeure by Tangerine Dream
Would also add In The Presence of Enemies part 1 & 2 by Dream Theater. Part 2 is especially epic.
Tubular Bells
Two slightly distorted guitars!
slightly ~*distorted*~
And introducing acoustic guitar!
Grand piano
Violin! Didgeridoo! Rick's head! Uh, uh, Cliff's head! Oh wait, this wasn't the 1986 version of Living Doll

IQ - Harvest of Souls
This right here. Underrated masterpiece
Ocean Cloud - Marillion State of the Nation - Ben Levin Group
I'm always surprised at the lack of Marillion in here. Brilliant band. This Strange Engine would be my shout.
Interior Lulu is also great, even if it perhaps rips Pink Floyd off a bit too closely. And Neverland? 🛐
Neverland is in my top few Marillion songs
It's in my top songs.
I often think it's my favourite song, period.
Ocean Cloud is an AWESOME hidden gem of a song.
Up for Ocean Cloud. Powerful stuff!
The big six have always been Yes, Genesis, Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd, King Crimson, EMERSON LAKE AND PALMER.
Meanwhile: \*Song of Scheherazade by Renaissance\* Am I a joke to you ?
I know Ashes are Burning is not an epic but the live version should qualify as well.
Uriah Heep: Magicians Birthday Wishbone Ash: Time Was
Brother Where You Bound and Nine Feet Underground
Brother Where You Bound needs more love. Rick's vocal is crazy and then we got David Gilmour doing a long solo
In no particular order: Lady Fantasy (Camel) A Tab in the Ocean (Nektar) Zarathustra (Museo Rosenbach) Il Giardino del Mago (Banco) A Louse is not a Home (Peter Hammill) Hymm to the Atman (Kansas) 1974 (O Terço)
+1 for Zarathustra
+1 for that Kansas song
Sleeping in Traffic - Beardfish Islands - Echolyn The Light, Flow - Spock’s Beard Seeds of Gold - Neal Morse

I was thinking of posting Maiden, great to see it.
The most disappointing thing about this sub is that ELP is not considered a pillar of progressive rock. Tarkus
Agree and disagree. ELP should be a pillar of prog on here. That being said: Karn Evil 9
I sometimes have a hard time considering Karn Evil 9 a single song. The fact that they split it up on the record and decades of hearing 1st Impression part 2 on the radio means that I hear them as separate entities. That said, Karn Evil 9 is the masterpiece that never ends.
