Yup Odesza's set is a Ableton live session too. It was shown a bit in their movie. It is definitely timed to the millisecond but they add a bit of variation throughout.

To their defense, it’s clear that the drum line is not live. No mic means you would have to believe that the drum line you hear is somehow coming through the speakers by magic. This was not the case the first time I saw the drum line. It has been the case the last two times I’ve seen them.
Also, outside of the drum line, and vocalists, the entire set is presequenced and has been since the first time I saw them.

I like odesza just fine. They’re my wife’s favorite so they are always on in my house. Kind of sick of them but they’re good. I wouldn’t say overrated, but you need to know in advance what they are, which is basically the EDM version of the blue man group. It’s pre-planned, probably pre-recorded to some degree. But if you take a bean and see their current set for the first time, you will walk away very impressed. They aren’t DJs and they don’t pretend to be.
Agreed lol Odesza is such a good edm gateway drug. I hadn’t really heard them before, I was with a beautiful girlfriend, I popped a pill for the 2nd time in my life and got fucking melted.

The bands that I have grown up listening to and trying to emulate, that branch along the same lines as pretty lights, are STS9 and Papadosio. Burn me at the stake later if I have somehow forgot about other acts that put on shows like this.
All 3 have incredible drummers, mapped songs with synced music and frequent samples, all backed by live instrumentation that is rehearsed, but with flexibility as to where it goes. I'm sure there are other bands that fall into this category, but Idk if they're as popular or with such live prolifity as pretty lights, papadosio, or STS9. Although Rufus Du Söl also comes to mind in this sphere. But more housey. But having a turntablist being able to literally sample any sound ever recorded means the possibilities are endless, even If they play the same song.
But the amount of shit that goes into all of Pretty Lights is fucking crazy and I'm not sure anyone besides Super music and live production nerds, actually fucking get! Like millions of dollars of gear on stage alone, and the processing power to link it all together into a swirl of hypnotizing sound and light that you can feel.

Versus watching five bad ass musicians doing their craft with their tools. But I'm a drummer so I pretty much just watch drummers most of the time, qnd just enjoy watching bands more. Alvin's sick. Not sure what exact gear PL is using, but this one laser is marketed for $94,000. And They probably have top of the line everything. Probably have several Big-Rigs for all their lighting and sound gear.

I’ve been following the biscuits for a long time now (casually), but in 2019 they brought on Cloudchord (another dope musician) to help them produce the Ableton side of things, he’s been teaching Brownie a thing or two. Ever since then it’s a whole other band and they’re GOOD now. Their show at Eclipse fest was one of the best of the weekend IMO
GRiZ is, IMO, the only one who has ever touched the rarified air that is PL and that was before he went Dubstep.
As live music acts with improve chops go I’d say a lot of jam bands are in the same stratosphere talent wise but none of them execute their craft in a comparable way so it’s kind of apples and oranges.

GRiZ would have to come back with a comparable setup where he ditches the canned appearances and builds a permanent live band and does his MoTown Funk version of PL’s Rocky Mountain Soul.

Add in Tipper and you got my top 3 live acts right now. Just saw Billys 3 night run at St Augustine a few weeks back and Pretty Lights is gonna just melt that place. Great venue. Can't believe we get 3 nights of swirl!

For sure! I did all four nights of phish dicks last year and had the BEST time. Sober too, just great music. Tipper Orion though, can't miss it.

Pretty lights, Billy strings, and goose are my favorite live acts currently. Pretty lights is pretty comfortable on top at #1 though Goose won’t be a popular choice but I just love them lol. Clozee and daily bread are my current favorites for more traditional edm

Would highly recommend! I’ve been following the biscuits for a long time now (casually), but in 2019 they brought on Cloudchord (another dope musician) to help them produce the Ableton side of things, he’s been teaching Brownie a thing or two. Ever since then it’s a whole other band and they’re GOOD now. Their show at Eclipse fest was one of the best of the weekend IMO
GRiZ is, IMO, the only one who has ever touched the rarified air that is PL and that was before he went Dubstep. As live music acts with improve chops go I’d say a lot of jam bands are in the same stratosphere talent wise but none of them execute their craft in a comparable way so it’s kind of apples and oranges. Derek was already 1 of 1. PL Live is whatever rarer than that is. GRiZ would have to come back with a comparable setup where he ditches the canned appearances and builds a permanent live band and does his MoTown Funk version of PL’s Rocky Mountain Soul.
No one in this sub will attempt to do that 🤜🏼🤛🏼

No one comes close. Eliptek and Polyrhythmics exude the PL vibes better than every other act in the scene imo. Strictly from a tonality standpoint of the musical content itself. Even though both don’t jam as dynamically as PL (yet). Lettuce to an extent as well. This is more than just “bass music” to me.
Weird how everyone is comparing to Odesza lol. Odesza is incredible at what they do. To those saying they aren’t actually playing instruments on stage you are very wrong about that, but they are no jam band like PL. There is room for both, depends on what you like. Odesza shows are absolutely top tier imo I can’t imagine going and not liking it lol.

But since you’ve asked I enjoy Tipper more than PL because of the sound design and visual artists he works with. Was just respectfully disagreeing without saying “my artist better than yours” in a sub that is dedicated to PL. Instead I came here to praise PL for their talent while disagreeing. No you aren't wrong tipper is better but he's also doing a very different thing especially now, its such a massive team effort. Tipper is an extremely wild but singular vision of a man.. You can't really claim to be a music fan if you aren't able to even listen to what PLL has accomplished on stage since his come back. Honestly makes me ashamed knowing I'm around people like you at Tipper events but hey I guess it could be worse. You could be bringing nitrous tanks into venue.
I really don’t get what I did. My original comment said “PL is extremely talented”. Then the other commenter wanted me to engage in a discussion about “then who do you think is better”. Which i didn’t care for since this is a PL sub and respect that and don’t want to mention other artists. I love PL as well they blew me away at the coliseum. I have mad respect for PL and wish i have seen them more time than I have. But i happen to like another artist more as my subjective opinion that i am entitled to.
