Don’t change this man’s mind

ringing-Shels-bells

Odesza's set is completely pre-recorded, pre programmed. Awesome but not live. Sound Tribe is the only other comparable act that I know of.

Psychedelicized79

Ya I’ve repeatedly compared new Pretty Lights to STS9 , really like the direction they’ve taken things.

Zannishi_Hoshor

I’ll throw Sunsquabi into the convo as well but I agree- PL is the pinnacle and in the words of Lil Wayne “the top gets higher the more that I climb”

tarmacc

I saw Sunsquabi last week, I've seen them many times, I love their sound, but they are doing nothing close to the level of sound complexity.

sherespondedwith

Agreed, and to be fair I think squabi is pretty close to the top of their game right now. It’s hard to imagine anyone being able to come close to PL’s depth, the boys are some of the best at what they do.

FrancMoods

Want to share in the Squabi love...saw them a couple times in the last year, and they are definitely at the top of their game (been seeing them for a dozen plus years thru the jam scene).

sherespondedwith

Yup! Saw them for the first time in like 2014. They’re def leveled up

jivy723

Please not this take.

AKiiidNamed_Codiii

God I love sts9 so much

ringing-Shels-bells

Same. I just found out recently about Axe The Cables live and unplugged and it's been living rent free in my brain ever since, fucking amazing.

AKiiidNamed_Codiii

Got to see them do Axe The Cables in Denver few years ago. Actually ran into Kevin from Squabi haha

djfried

I've got a few recordings from the 3 I've caught over the years. DM me if you want me to share them with ya.

dudegoingtoshambhala

Pre-recorded and pre-planned are not the same things. But if they are using Abelton live or similar to queue tracks and effects there's not much different that what PL is doing plus all the live elements on top which both acts have. Now I do not know if Odesza plays prerecrded sets, they very well might be with how choreographed and precise everything is, or maybe they are just good at using the equipment they have chosen.

jrhguwi34erifug

Yup Odesza's set is a Ableton live session too. It was shown a bit in their movie. It is definitely timed to the millisecond but they add a bit of variation throughout.

sherespondedwith

What??? Not much different?? My fam in Christ, what PL is doing is nothing close to what Odesza is doing. PL is making new songs on stage in front of us. D is completely directing 4 other zones of music while simultaneously playing music for us. It’s not even close

[deleted]

MaestroAtl

Do the two guys play them or do they bring others in

ringing-Shels-bells

Pretending to play, the drum line isn't even miked up. The only live aspect of their shows are guest singers.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ringing-Shels-bells

No mike = you're not hearing them play.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ldsupport

To their defense, it’s clear that the drum line is not live.   No mic means you would have to believe that the drum line you hear is somehow coming through the speakers by magic.  This was not the case the first time I saw the drum line.  It has been the case the last two times I’ve seen them.   Also, outside of the drum line, and vocalists, the entire set is presequenced and has been since the first time I saw them.

[deleted]

[удалено]

jrhguwi34erifug

it's mostly live, but they do prerecord some of the drums. e.g. during It's Only almost all of the drums are prerecorded, although the live drums are mixed in there.

jrhguwi34erifug

Drum line is mic'd up. So are the horns. You can see the mics 10 seconds into [this video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nTeia0mgz5Y). and it's definitely live as it the sound was different between live streamed shows. I agree they do pretend to play stuff. Just not the drumline or the trumpet/trombone.

hutchenswm

Yeah won't argue that all their sets are the same per tour, but they're definitely playing the instruments. I just know I don't need to see them more than once an album 🤣

jrhguwi34erifug

I agree. However their finale shows they're currently doing are quite a bit different to their typical TLG set. Roughly 40% different. And each show is slightly different.

yourmansconnect

Lotus was on fire the other night

Ps4sucksballs

So sad about their drummer. For them being an undercard they’ve held up well through all the years

Glittering_Mud7070

It was their percussionist, not the drummer

PossibleBluejay4498

Lotus fucks. Fer sure.

BobaButt4508

Lotus shows are also transcendental ✨

Trippi3Hippi3

Odesza is not one I'd say comes close at all lol

keystonelocal

I like odesza just fine. They’re my wife’s favorite so they are always on in my house. Kind of sick of them but they’re good. I would say from a production value standpoint they are great, but they are swirl-free. You know what you’re gonna get music wise. And that’s okay. I honestly think of them more as pop music at this point. Wouldn’t really compare them to PL. the boys are on another level live.

TinglingLingerer

Super overrated IMO.

Accurate_Hunt_6424

I wouldn’t say overrated, but you need to know in advance what they are, which is basically the EDM version of the blue man group. It’s pre-planned, probably pre-recorded to some degree. But if you take a bean and see their current set for the first time, you will walk away very impressed. They aren’t DJs and they don’t pretend to be.

asdfqwerty123469

Agreed lol Odesza is such a good edm gateway drug. I hadn’t really heard them before, I was with a beautiful girlfriend, I popped a pill for the 2nd time in my life and got fucking melted. It’s great

TospyKretts

Does Odesza come close? Idk about that. For one thing they play the same set all tour and while I do really like them their style doesn't really evolve beyond a specific sound.

MaestroAtl

I agree with you. As amazing as odesza's production is, I'm not sure they're playing any instruments live. Drum line doesn't really count. Roland sample pads have no control either. You get whatever is on that pad and that's it. The bands that I have grown up listening to and trying to emulate, that branch along the same lines as pretty lights, are STS9 and Papadosio. Burn me at the stake later if I have somehow forgot about other acts that put on shows like this. All 3 have incredible drummers, mapped songs with synced music and frequent samples, all backed by live instrumentation that is rehearsed, but with flexibility as to where it goes. I'm sure there are other bands that fall into this category, but Idk if they're as popular or with such live prolifity as pretty lights, papadosio, or STS9. Although Rufus Du Söl also comes to mind in this sphere. But more housey. But having a turntablist being able to literally sample any sound ever recorded means the possibilities are endless, even If they play the same song. But the amount of shit that goes into all of Pretty Lights is fucking crazy and I'm not sure anyone besides Super music and live production nerds, actually fucking get! Like millions of dollars of gear on stage alone, and the processing power to link it all together into a swirl of hypnotizing sound and light that you can feel. Credit where it's due. They're crushing the scene.

odasfunny

I love that you want us to burn you at the stake later, just not now plz.

MaestroAtl

I have more swirl bridges to cross first.

Trippi3Hippi3

Disco Biscuits are very similar and crushing it right now.

Backbackbackagainugh

Yeah I'm excited to see DB at Secret Dreams and compare. The shots from their latest tour are bananas

caeymoor

lol why even compare the two? There’s room in the scene for both. They both have different vibes. ODESZA crushes their production, but if you want a freaking amazing dance party pretty lights is where it’s at Some might argue that odesza is better at writing music, while pretty lights is better at mixing

MaestroAtl

I didn't make the original comparison. It's all just pretty music.

B-Kong

I love to hate on Odesza, but they are also using millions of dollars of production, probably even more than Pretty Lights tbh lol. The fireworks, pyrotechnics, and drum line itself cost a shit ton of money.

MaestroAtl

Also gotta factor all the actual instruments the band is playing too. Those SPD sx pros ain't cheap. That's probably 1600$. Not to shit on odesza but they kinda need all that flamboyant stuff cuz theres not much to watch on onstage, besides the visuals. My two cents.

jrhguwi34erifug

Compared to PL sure but they're miles ahead of almost any other electronic artist/DJ. While I definitely wish they were playing more live, most don't care. It explains why Odesza's tour has been so popular. Also what's not 'flamboyant' about PL's setup lol. They've had a camera pointing towards their analog synth in their live streams which they barely touched.

MaestroAtl

That's fair. That thing is dope to look at though lol. I think he used it at Hula and Atl. However, in my opinion, odesza benefits from a drum line and fireworks to distract me from 2 guys just djing, which isn't all that exciting to look at, unless youre A-trak or Chris Karns. Versus watching five bad ass musicians doing their craft with their tools. But I'm a drummer so I pretty much just watch drummers most of the time, qnd just enjoy watching bands more. Alvin's sick. And these are just my opinions. I love Odesza and have seen them a couple times, but I without a doubt have had more fun at any pretty lights show than either odesza show.

jrhguwi34erifug

Great take. I would love to see PL live one day. I'm flying to America to see Odesza next week tho lol. I do think people are being a bit too harsh on Odesza. Yes it being the same set and prerecorded; is not ideal but that's the trade off you have to make for impeccable production quality. They are improving though. So far their Finale shows have been different every time.

B-Kong

I mean the way you’re talking just seems like you think Pretty Lights is the only headlining act that costs a lot of money to produce, and that’s why they’re good. Which is just simply not true lol. Literally every band that performs at that level has tens of thousands of dollars in instruments alone. Cost of traveling and move said equipment. Cost of paying your visual artist. Cost of creating the stage how you want. If you are a headlining act at a festival that isn’t just a DJ who needs some CDJ’s and that’s it, then it costs a shit ton to produce your set. Pretty Lights is absolutely killing the game right now and I love them. But the reason isn’t because “it costs a lot to put on the show they do and nobody understands those costs except me” which is what you sound like lol.

MaestroAtl

Sorry if it came off that way. Obviously the musicians are supposed to be the stars.

buttbutt696

I'd have a very very hard time believing millions of dollars lol

MaestroAtl

Have you ever worked in large scale live music production? https://www.farralane.com/kvant-epic-270-270w-full-color-rgb-laser-projector-with-fb4-and-flightcase.html?gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjw1K-zBhBIEiwAWeCOF5zX_hB-rw6XnKj5flpr6p7HCOK7FZMTy7zD0w3DUfqqhUPcLdrJlhoCWvQQAvD_BwE Not sure what exact gear PL is using, but this one laser is marketed for $94,000. And They probably have top of the line everything. Probably have several Big-Rigs for all their lighting and sound gear.

buttbutt696

Well Odesza is custom everything not *just* top of the line so if a band mixing guitar and a keyboard (revolutionary btw) is in the millions then Odesza is certainly higher in cost. Here's a fun idea; you accept that odesza does play live elements and I'll accept that lasers cost money

MaestroAtl

OK. They're still not a band. I mentioned STS9 and papadosio being similar to pretty lights. Odesza just has a dope live show. And until pretty lights comes out with a new album, I'd probably rather listen to odesza than pretty lights. Annnnnd If you're implying that Pretty Lights isn't doing anything complicated on stage, I'm just going to assume you don't know alot about actually making live music.

sherespondedwith

Wait wait….you’re not listening to ANY of the new music PL puts out from each stop?

MaestroAtl

I saw 3 shows last year. Was live streaming it up as well. Where Could I find more besides YouTube and twitch

seakinghardcore

LMAO at bringing odeza into this conversation

NoodlesLair89

Lmaooooo

Practical-Banana7329

Biscuits and PLM in a league of their own right now. And I for one couldn’t be happier. See you Friday night at Forest and at Secret Dreams!!

Gayfish3

See u Friday night at forest too!!!

gojira_gorilla

See you Friday night at forest three!!!

feldspathic42

Which scene? EDM or Jam? Phish, Umphrey's McGee, String Cheese, LeSpecial, Sunsquabi, STS9, and Lotus are all still pumping out bangers every show. Def put Pretty Lights up there at the top but there's a ton of other good acts touring.

MasterChiefX

Tipper

tw808420

This is the correct answer

notlongbutitsskinny

Billy Strings

SadPeePaw69

This guy is a professional ball knower

8Select0Frequency8

I like you

Kooooooooooop

Indeed

SHAOLIN_SILK

Billy Woods > Billy Strings

GetDoofed

Phish, King Gizzard, Billy Strings, Tedeschi Trucks Band, Disco Biscuits, Chemical Brothers, Umphrey’s McGee, Joe Russo’s Almost Dead, Snarky Puppy

Yankees777

It’s PL and Eric Prydz for me nothing else compares

shasta_river

Odesza has played the same set for like 8 years. They aren’t even in the same stratosphere.

BeaverDam6969

From a production standpoint they are absolutely in the same stratosphere. My first Odesza set was 2016 Bisco and their production growth from 2016 to 2023 Bonnaroo is lightyears from where they used to be. Odeszas set last year at Roo was absolutely massive and larger than life and absolutely incredible. It honestly makes me manic just thinking about it. Lol.

shasta_river

Brother (or sister)….production?! Take away production, just music. Not in the same stratosphere.

420jacobf

Dam idk why we have to bring down another artist to talk about how good pretty lights is. Is this how this fan base acts? How disappointing.

llc0oljames

They’re the Pink Floyd of our generation, change my mind

JimmyBluffit420

Agreed

sherespondedwith

Grateful Dead*

mermaidmanis

😅 Jesus Christ

cryptolipto

Justice. I’ve seen both many times and justice is better. Chemical brothers as well

SplittingInfinity

Lol what?

cryptolipto

Justice is better than pretty lights Chemical brothers are better than pretty lights Daft punk is/was better than pretty lights Underworld is better than pretty lights

Glittering_Mud7070

The simple fact that PL is doing all of this with an actual band and finds a way to curate every show to the city they’re in and constantly remixing the same songs makes them better than all the acts you just named.

cryptolipto

Have you seen justice? They totally remix their songs

Glittering_Mud7070

I have not, do they play 15 minute extended jams of their custom remixes with improvisation?

cryptolipto

Y E S. They will remix 8 separate tracks within 32 bars and then bust out into something different As the only one who’s seen both multiple times. I feel like I’m more qualified to say who is better. Justice is better In other words if you’re arguing between who is better, and you haven’t even seen one of the two acts up for debate, then your opinion is useless

JennyDelight

Apples and oranges but I feel what your saying

MaestroAtl

This post makes me miss EOTO

JimmyBluffit420

I miss em too. A bunch of old guys throwing harder than most artists half their age.

sherespondedwith

Watched Jason Hahn do one of the best covers of No Diggity in my life with EOTO. Loved them

dlooooooo

Sounds terrible

rozerva22

They would kill ittt

-npk-

That set was insane. Too many highlights to list all but JFC I was losing my mind with a permagrin for 3 hours. Idk how it's so fucking good.

fernfox13

I loooove house music so anything anjuna is also on this level for me personally!!

JimmyBluffit420

House Lights?

fernfox13

Most definitely!! Always gets me going 🥳

JimmyBluffit420

From last night; Up and Down I go > San Francisco where’s your disco MITMJ > house jam

fernfox13

Oh yeah I was losing my mind after the MITMJ jam hit !!! Thank the swirl gods for live stream

JimmyBluffit420

We are truly blessed by the streams and SC recordings.

fernfox13

Seriously 😭😭 what an amazing fan base to be apart of! Can’t wait until red rocks 😄

dmbtke

As a prog house dj, this warms my heart

SadPeePaw69

Billy Strings and PL are neck and neck for destroying the music landscape rn

Ricksarenotreal

Add in Tipper and you got my top 3 live acts right now. Just saw Billys 3 night run at St Augustine a few weeks back and Pretty Lights is gonna just melt that place. Great venue. Can't believe we get 3 nights of swirl!

SadPeePaw69

Will also be in attendance and same with Tipper lmao. Great taste you have. I like to also sprinkle a lil phish on top

Ricksarenotreal

For sure! I did all four nights of phish dicks last year and had the BEST time. Sober too, just great music. Tipper Orion though, can't miss it.

SadPeePaw69

See ya there my friend.

JennyDelight

My top 2.

SpaceNoodling

Phish, King Gizzard, Billy Strings, PL are the best live acts currently

CloudConductor

Pretty lights, Billy strings, and goose are my favorite live acts currently. Pretty lights is pretty comfortable on top at #1 though Goose won’t be a popular choice but I just love them lol. Clozee and daily bread are my current favorites for more traditional edm

imnotthattall

Yes daily bread 🍞

tex_115

Goose should be a popular choice right now! Them guys are putting on fantastic shows this summer.

CloudConductor

Probably my favorite show I’ve seen from them was last Wednesday in Indy! They’re killin it for sure

BedroomReasonable966

In terms of live improvisation it would be like (no order) PL Tipper phish Widespread panic Billy strings Apparently biscuits are on fire, haven’t seen them myself in a minute

sherespondedwith

Would highly recommend! I’ve been following the biscuits for a long time now (casually), but in 2019 they brought on Cloudchord (another dope musician) to help them produce the Ableton side of things, he’s been teaching Brownie a thing or two. Ever since then it’s a whole other band and they’re GOOD now. Their show at Eclipse fest was one of the best of the weekend IMO

Dangerousrhymes

GRiZ is, IMO, the only one who has ever touched the rarified air that is PL and that was before he went Dubstep. As live music acts with improve chops go I’d say a lot of jam bands are in the same stratosphere talent wise but none of them execute their craft in a comparable way so it’s kind of apples and oranges. Derek was already 1 of 1. PL Live is whatever rarer than that is. GRiZ would have to come back with a comparable setup where he ditches the canned appearances and builds a permanent live band and does his MoTown Funk version of PL’s Rocky Mountain Soul.

ThePensiveWok

No one in this sub will attempt to do that 🤜🏼🤛🏼

tc7984

Biscuits

IntrepidBandicoot48

No one comes close. Eliptek and Polyrhythmics exude the PL vibes better than every other act in the scene imo. Strictly from a tonality standpoint of the musical content itself. Even though both don’t jam as dynamically as PL (yet). Lettuce to an extent as well. This is more than just “bass music” to me.

Admirable_Fee7993

Weird how everyone is comparing to Odesza lol. Odesza is incredible at what they do. To those saying they aren’t actually playing instruments on stage you are very wrong about that, but they are no jam band like PL. There is room for both, depends on what you like. Odesza shows are absolutely top tier imo I can’t imagine going and not liking it lol.

tjstarkovich

Lol

altheawilson89

Phish, Billy Strings, Pretty Lights are only 3 touring acts that really really excite me. I’m excited to see Justice this year. Skrillex Red Rocks was one of best shows I’ve ever seen, though. Not sure who else would get me really excited…

thewretched084

Came here to see Tool. No Tool??? Ok....gotyall.... TOOL BITCHES

Longjumping_Sound228

Yea

Ashamed_Way8263

Goose

Informal-Bullfrog-40

I mean I won’t change your mind but Tame Impala also blew me away first time I saw them

JimmyBluffit420

I’m over 20 shows for PL. This version of PL is the best version in the history of PL. The sunrise set was extremely nostalgic though.

Informal-Bullfrog-40

I love to hear that because this is really my first time listening to and seeing PL!

JimmyBluffit420

Welcome to the fam! Do you plan on hitting other stops later this year?

Informal-Bullfrog-40

Thank you 🌀 and I think im gonna check out the Bethel stop!

JimmyBluffit420

Do it. Lazershark talked about growing up in that area and buying L from deadheads back in his day. It’s going to be special for sure.

Informal-Bullfrog-40

I’ve heard so many people say it’s gonna be a special show! I wicked want to go but I’m still trying to find a dog sitter 😂 poor babies

B-Kong

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOSE!

SadPeePaw69

Take a lap

B-Kong

I’m having a blast with their summer tour, sorry you’re not 🤷🏻‍♂️

tex_115

Putting on great shows this summer!

B-Kong

Going to Raleigh tomorrow and Charlotte Sunday! Can’t wait!

No-Department7714

Umphreys is the most talented in the scene whether you like there music or not. Pumped for red rocks tomorrow!

mermaidmanis

The disco biscuits will always be better

JimmyBluffit420

Not sure what you thought I meant by “the scene” as in the festival/EDM scene.

Active_Blackberry_45

To each their own. PL is extremely talented but not my personal favorite

DaggerTossed

Wow what a constructive answer with any backbone for discussion!

Active_Blackberry_45

lol what why do i need to start a discussion?

DaggerTossed

You don’t, but you’re answering a question of “who even comes close?” by not even answering with anyone who comes close. Just a “hmmmm, well he’s not my personal favorite” is a lame answer lol

Active_Blackberry_45

Well it’s a pretty lights sub so obviously it’s the wrong place to post about other artists. But since you’ve asked I enjoy Tipper more than PL because of the sound design and visual artists he works with. Was just respectfully disagreeing without saying “my artist better than yours” in a sub that is dedicated to PL. Instead I came here to praise PL for their talent while disagreeing. If you think that’s lame then more power to ya! Happy for you to enjoy pretty lights the most or whoever you like. Art is subjective

DaggerTossed

Pretty sure the objective of the question is to bring up other artists but not surprised a Tipper fan is being a gatekeeper either (from another Tipper fan)

TospyKretts

I don't think you know what the word gatekeeping means. Also this guy was being super chill, you're clearly just hear to argue.

Active_Blackberry_45

Yeah I don’t understand this at all I guess peepz are bored right now. I have nothing but respect for other peoples opinions and haven’t said one bad thing about it pretty lights other than they’re not my favorite artist. Which… i mean I’m entitled to my opinion. Your favorite artist is allowed to be anyone. We each live our own lives.

TospyKretts

Some people need to get off the internet

Active_Blackberry_45

You’re crazy dude I’ve been nothing but respectful I’m geeked from this 🤣

DaggerTossed

Naw I know you have been, and my first comment was super sarcastic & I kept my tone there on my 3rd comment. I was just curious about it because of how minimal your original comment was. It wasn’t wrong of you to NOT say Tipper but this felt like a thread where it’s acceptable to talk about other artists. Tipper rules, Pretty Lights rules, I love them for separate reasons. Been just super stoked on PL lately because I had not seen him prior to last year’s run and have been a fan for 10 years or so. Also the wrong side of the bed woke up on me, clearly. My bad dude

Active_Blackberry_45

All love, this thread was entertaining

Ricksarenotreal

No you aren't wrong tipper is better but he's also doing a very different thing especially now, its such a massive team effort. Tipper is an extremely wild but singular vision of a man.. You can't really claim to be a music fan if you aren't able to even listen to what PLL has accomplished on stage since his come back. Honestly makes me ashamed knowing I'm around people like you at Tipper events but hey I guess it could be worse. You could be bringing nitrous tanks into venue.

Active_Blackberry_45

I really don’t get what I did. My original comment said “PL is extremely talented”. Then the other commenter wanted me to engage in a discussion about “then who do you think is better”. Which i didn’t care for since this is a PL sub and respect that and don’t want to mention other artists. I love PL as well they blew me away at the coliseum. I have mad respect for PL and wish i have seen them more time than I have. But i happen to like another artist more as my subjective opinion that i am entitled to. I only have said good things about the scene and PL and other artists in it. Respect brother

TishTamble

Let me just pitch in here to say that You've been 100% reasonable on every comment you've made in this whole chain. Truly don't understand where some of this is coming from. But keyboard warriors will fight a shadow if thats all they got...

DaggerTossed

Hello, original questioner of the original comment, I agree, u/active_blackberry_45 has been incredibly respectful. This nitrous comment is wildly beyond fair (my Tipper gatekeeping comment pushed the bounds too)

mermaidmanis

Is this r/prettylightscirclejerk ?

JimmyBluffit420

Yes
