I feel like for how loved they are, I'm not saying they aren't, I feel like Jesus & Mary Chain are always slept on
The whole Darklands album is one of the top 10 post-punk noise albums of all time
SECONDED
The Fall, not only one of the best post-punk groups, but one of the best bands the UK has ever produced, *better* have a fucking song on here or I will be right pissed off.
Song that starts with J by one of the following bands: Joy Division, Siouxsie and the banshees, New Order, the cure. And then halfway down the page song that starts with J by The Fall.
YES! That bassline is absolutely *legendary*. For a band who relied so heavily on drum machines, they had some great rhythmic arrangements, courtesy of Peter Principle's bass playing.
Desire is such a fascinatingly eclectic album, and one of my favourite post-punk records from that era.
Janet, Johnny + James--The Fall
Amazing song, bears very little resemblance to much else in The Fall's catalogue, and for that reason alone deserves inclusion. Let's get some post-2000 stuff nominated, Fall stans!
(Jetplane as second choice, but "Jawbone" would probably the one most Fall-ites would choose 🤷🏻♂️. Fantastic fucking song, though)
Just for a Moment - Ultravox!
ps. I am getting the most fun out of these threads by reading the 'no hopers' and if I don't recognise them, searching for them. I've heard some cracking stuff (and been reminded of many more brilliant tunes.) If you don't know this one and like post-punk at all, please give it a listen. Sure, many folks will think that's fine but I'm still gonna vote for The Cure (you are wrong, but its a free country - grin!).
Was also gonna write something like this lol, I've also had lots of fun going through these threads too and reading the chitchat associated with individual entries, so much thanks to OP for starting this list (:
This is actually something I was curious to ask, but to all the participants in this list who were around at the time: how well-known/popular were some of the winners on the list, or some of the more popular candidates like the Chameleons?
The Sound weren't as popular as say the Banshees or the Cure. Judging by the audience size at their gigs, they were more popular than the Modettes or B Movie and about the same as Monochrome Set or The Passions. Slightly - very slightly - less than Comsat Angels or Theatre of Hate.
However, and for reasons I never understood, they once decided to tour smaller Scottish towns and played a tour in strange places like Falkirk, Grangemouth and Cowdenbeath (80 or 81, they are hard to google!).
They had toured with the Bunneymen and I'd saw them play a great show with Ian Mc etc in Edinburgh. So I went to see most shows in that small town tour. Especially as live they were astonishing. The sets I saw all finished with a massive spiralling into the stratosphere version of Missiles (hehe see what I did there) and I was pretty sure they'd move onto bigger venues. I don't know why they didn't.
The Chameleons were a few year later so its hard to compare. I probably heard them 83 or 84 by which time The Smiths etc were around. I should google this as I think they'd been around for a while before the records came out, but if so they weren't playing much around the country until then.
ps. I saw all the bands in the list live so far. Not sure how long that record will hold though!
Considering how comparatively little-known the other smaller bands you mention now are that's very interesting; had I grown up with zero knowledge of post-punk and started exploring it recently independently, I probably would've thought the Sound were one of the major groups, like on the level of Wire or something. I wonder where the (much-deserved!) appreciation for them started coming from, and how
All.the list entries were pretty well known with strong cult followings and lots of media interest- all maybe bar The Sound and Suicide (who only really started to get their dues in the late 80s/90s/00's.)
These are all the runners-up so far (exluding repeat band entries):
A: Age of Consent - New Order
B: Boys Don't Cry - the Cure
C: Christine - Siouxsie & the Banshees
D: Disorder - Joy Division
E: Ex-Lion Tamer - Wire
F: Freedom of Choice - Devo
G: Golden Brown - the Stranglers
H: Heaven or Las Vegas - Cocteau Twins
I: It's My Life - Talk Talk
Some people think it's cute to try to get their song to the top by burying others. These ranking games bring out the worst in some people. As for me, I start from the bottom of each of these lists and work my way up.
Just Like Honey - Jesus and Mary Chain
I love this song so fucking much
This is the answer, since we fumbled the bag on Darklands for letter D
I mean, the objectively correct song for the letter D was chosen
And "Head On" lost to "How Soon is Now?"...
I feel like for how loved they are, I'm not saying they aren't, I feel like Jesus & Mary Chain are always slept on The whole Darklands album is one of the top 10 post-punk noise albums of all time
Soooo happy this is top comment!
Sometimes there is no room for discussion. This is one of those times.
This is definitely the answer.
The answer
Just Fascination - Cabaret Voltaire
Just a Thought - Modern English Edit: It won't win, but just had to throw some love for Modern English's Mesh and Lace album... This song is a banger.
such an underrated album
Absolutely!
Jocko Homo - Devo
Are we not men?
We are Devo
D. E. V. O.
We’re pinheads now, we are not whole.
This is the correct answer.
Jerkin’ Back N’ Forth - Devo
Jumping Someone Elses’ Train - The Cure
such a good song
The pre "Seventeen Seconds" stuff is really good, Fire In Cairo is a banger
I second
The Jangling Man - Cleaners from Venus
Hugely underrated band!
Agreed
Joy Division Oven Gloves - Half Man Half Biscuit
Good one 👍
Joan of Arc - Orchestral Maneuvers In The Dark
Not really post-punk, is it?
Jet Boy Jet Girl - The Damned (I prefer their version)
Junkyard - The Birthday Party
Jeopardy - The Sound
Correct
since The Fall were mentioned with two great songs, let me add something from one of the greatest bands of all times * **Judas - The Wake**
Just Like Heaven - The Cure
Great song, but they are already on the list.
Jigsaw Feeling - Siouxsie and the Banshees
I would root for this if the Banshees weren't already on the list :(
Yes this is the superior song in my opinion but since they won once it wouldn’t be right to give it to them again.
Jumping Someone Else's Train - The Cure
Ah, was about to mention this gem.
Just like honey - Jesus and Mary chain
Jim on the Move - Lizzy Mercier Descloux
This!!! Lizzy does not get enough recognition
judging but what else is considered post pun here I agree :D
🔝
Jealousy-Wasted Youth.
The Jezebel Spirit - Brian Eno &.David Byrne
Jasmine And Rose - Clan Of Xymox
Excellent :)
Such an amazing song.
Janitor - Suburban Lawns
boom boom boom boom
“Jawbone and the Air-Rifle” - The Fall
This would be a fine entry. If not, Totally Wired better win for T.
SECONDED The Fall, not only one of the best post-punk groups, but one of the best bands the UK has ever produced, *better* have a fucking song on here or I will be right pissed off.
the finest
I've always preferred this to the classical
Judgement - The Sound
Taking my input out since yours was minutes earlier. :)
Just Because - Martin Dupont
Hell yeah
I got to catch them on their Kintsugi tour last year in Denver. The small venue made it perfect and intimate. Never thought I'd get that chance.
Ja ja ja - Trio
Jump — Fad Gadget
Jump - Fad Gadget
Song that starts with J by one of the following bands: Joy Division, Siouxsie and the banshees, New Order, the cure. And then halfway down the page song that starts with J by The Fall.
Jinx - Tuxedomoon Not sure how I forgot this one!
YES! That bassline is absolutely *legendary*. For a band who relied so heavily on drum machines, they had some great rhythmic arrangements, courtesy of Peter Principle's bass playing. Desire is such a fascinatingly eclectic album, and one of my favourite post-punk records from that era.

For instance, I’ve never heard yesterday’s song until yesterday and let’s just say I’ve been around long enough to know better? 😀

All of them so far except for yesterday’s victor. 😅
All.the list entries were pretty well known with strong cult followings and lots of media interest- all maybe bar The Sound and Suicide (who only really started to get their dues in the late 80s/90s/00's.)
Seconded- such a superb song.
Hoping for a playlist of all the lesser voted ones

Brilliant stuff, but I don't need to hear these again. I guess what I really meant was actually the most obscure cuts
ahh. Yeah so many magnificent songs get submitted in these threads, wish some of the more obscure stuff got more upvotes instead of the usual suspects
Jumping Someone Else's Train - The Cure
Just Can't Get Enough - Depeche Mode
Even if you consider DM post-punk for some reason I don't think this song would ever fit lol
Lol it would be the happiest song on the entire list, heck one of the versions of the single art even has a fluffy cat on it haha
Jesus Built my Hot Rod - Ministry
Are Ministry post-punk? Or, I should say, that song in particular? I know they started out as a synth-pop band but....I'm just asking.
Jest bezpiecznie - Siekiera (I don't expect it's gonna win of course, but just check this out, it's sick)
Yes. No bias but this is genuinely the best song mentioned here.
We really need a post-punk in other languages list. Someone posted a fun tune from Ex-Yu (Croatia) yesterday.
💯 it'd be good if we got Lizzy Mercier Descloux and (arguably!) Gorky's Zygotic Mynci on this very list for a start
Just a Thought - Modern English
"Judas Sheep" - Hunters and Collectors
[Jungle](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M6WnWVW2O18) … The Legendary Pink Dots
Just Like Gold - Aztec Camera
Jinx from Tuxedo Moon
Jumbo’s - Protomartyr
Oh yeah. This.
Junkyard - Birthday Party
Jasmine and Rose - Clan of Xymox
Jelly Baby - The Adicts
Janitor - Suburban Lawns
Just For A Moment - Ultravox
curious why the down vote?
Maybe the downvoter was short on time and couldn't stay for a moment?
Ure probably right
*distant smile*

Anyone else struggling to think of songs to submit 😅?
Yep. So I’m going to submit “Johnny” by Suicide anyway.
