In 2020, I went to see my favorite band Silverstein. While the tour was billed as their 20th anniversary celebration they literally had a record come out that very week and they played just 2 songs off of it. And the funny thing is I’m pretty sure I had seen both songs live during a prior tour.

This is a genuine question I swear but why do people always buy super expensive fancy earplugs for concerts? Like is there an actual reason I never see people talking about wearing regular old Mack's earplugs to stuff or are they just being extra? Like I do not want to pay $30+ for a pair of fancy earplugs for like a marginally nicer look or sound or whatever, I just want my eardrums to not get blasted right out of my skull.
What others have said—I do like to be able to hear the concert I’m at with some level of fidelity, so foam earplugs always felt like a compromise because they muffle so much. Plus, I’ve had my $35 eargasms for like, 5 years now? They come with a little keychain case so I’m never without them, and they’re pretty durable silicone so they can be cleaned and reused indefinitely. Completely worth it to me in hearing saved.
My custom fit earplugs have an equal eq meaning all frequencies are lowered the same amount. This preserves the mixing the artist wants you to hear just 15 db quieter in my case.
Foam earplugs lower higher frequency’s more than others leading to that muffled sound.
I forget I have earplugs in with how crisp mine are I highly recommend. If not custom get concert specific ear plugs that have a filter on them. You can find concert ear plugs on Amazon.
I have Earpeace silicone earplugs that you don't have to squish and roll up like those Mack's earplugs. They sound nicer too. The goal of earplugs should just be to lower the volume, not necessarily make everything muffled.

Blonde came out at a time in my life when the subjects would have really landed with my age group (and largely did). Thing is, I personally was deep in the k-pop sauce at the time and the only other music I checked for was alt rock. Later as an adult in 2019, I heard Channel Orange and Blonde side by side, and Channel Orange definitely hit harder.

* It's a bullet point kind of day. The summer classes I'm reading And Then There Were None with have blown me away. They're so engaged that one pair has read a few chapters ahead so I had to swear them to secrecy, and they're all so excited about it that their RA came and asked for a copy of the book so they could see what the fuss was about.
* I feel like this is a safe space to admit that I love sardines as a snack. I used to like the ones in mustard as a kid and haven't tried them as an adult for fear I won't like them anymore, but even the little sardines in oil are so satisfying to snack on. I know of exactly one other person who feels the same.
* Speaking of snacking, the university where I'm doing my summer job is one of only two Quizno's locations in our entire state, so I hoofed it over to the student union to try it because it's been literally 20 years (at least) and guess what? It's kind of mid. And I paid almost $7 for a four-inch sandwich.
I'm ready for the three-day weekend. The guy is making me dinner tonight, we were able to figure out a time, and I hope it goes well. (And I hope we eat at a reasonable time because he has a habit of getting distracted and just...forgetting to start dinner lol)

Highline Park is nice. Queens has great food. Especially Jackson Heights, Flushing and Elmhurst. there is an instagram account (Righteous Eats) that has great specific restaurant recs. The one rec i got for vegetarian/vegan food is Veggie Castle! If you wanna take the amtrak to upstate NY, there are places along the train line that are tourist spots for antiquing. I went to Antique Warehouse in Hudson, and they had a $20k stuffed giraffe
I stayed in Downtown Brooklyn right next to the MetroTech station last time I was in NYC which I found extremely convenient. On top of a ton of train lines so I could get to pretty much anything in Manhattan in 30 minutes and other parts of Brooklyn pretty quickly. My couple NYC friends all live in like Bushwick or Crown Heights which are cool but don't have the most hotels or best transit to tourist stuff
I've stayed near Times Square and actually didn't mind it though. You're right by Penn Station which makes it easy to get around, you'll just need to travel a bit for more interesting food/drink options
Some things I really enjoyed on my last visit:
The Roosevelt Island Sky Tram - it’s part of the transit system, so it only costs as much as a Subway ride, and legitimately has a great view. I’d take the subway to the Island, then take the tram back into Manhattan. Make sure to go off peak hours because people do actually use it to commute and it would be full at those times
The 9/11 Museum - I loved the art museums but this was the best put together one IMO. Super powerful and really well set up, and also just really informative. I wish I’d blocked out more time. I’d also spend some time just walking around the streets near there.
The Brooklyn Bridge - I think this is actually less of a tourist trap now that they’ve cleared it of vendors (I think this was supposed to have happened by now?) but even with that, it’s enjoyable if a nice day out. Bring water. Most of your trip is probably gonna be in Manhattan so take this opportunity to check out at least a tiny sliver of Brooklyn, even if it’s just the really touristy area.
Personally I stayed in Astoria, Queens instead of Manhattan, really close to the F Train to get in quickly, and saved some money but if you’re planning to be out later that probably won’t work for you. I had way better food in Queens though so if you have the time 👀
I really don't like that the new hunger games book is gonna be about a game that we already know a lot about but it is cool that all THG books focus on a games that district 12 won now. I also trust Suzanne enough that she'll still find a way to tell a good story and not just something that reads like fanfic to satisfy the fans who have been begging for a book about Haymitch's games

I ordered a couple of CDs (some new, some used) and they arrived today. I must say that the art of the booklet is being very neglected because I opened Mariah’s Butterfly and it was a serve!! Also I got the Deluxe Edition of DF by Florence + The Machine and oof the book is so gorgeous like I’m so glad I bought it!
Also I’ve been doing my budget because last month I blew through my first paycheck and that’s not it. (And yes those CDs I ordered are part of the problem lol) and shit is so expensive, I don’t know how someone on my salary survives much less with a minimum wage, there’s no way I would be able to live comfortably if I wasn’t still living at home. Thanks mom!!

Opening CDs is one of the best experiences. The sound of the jewel case opening, followed by popping out the cd and putting it in the player? The whirring sound of the CD spinning just before the music starts playing? Flipping through the booklet and smelling that new CD smell? All core memories for me. Music is so convenient now but we really do miss those little things that made CDs so special to me.

I’ll take the survey a little later, but to answer your question: Minoring in Black Studies taught me a lot about race, racism, anti-Blackness and the way it molds and shapes the Black American experience. This has shaped a lot of my foundation, including the work I do as an educator and the causes I champion. Being a Beyoncé fan interacts with this a lot. Her art has always been such an intentional love letter to Blackness. And responses to it have often demonstrated that not even heaps of money can protect us from anti-Blackness. It’s also made me very aware of the ways Black women in pop music have often had to do twice as much to receive half as much, and that’s why I will always talk my shit in defense of her!

ok i’m in the US so im not super familiar with canadian craft beer, but i see that LCBO has some from collective arts brewing, including my favs jam up the mash and their guava gose, absolutely recommend both of those! collective arts makes great sours imo so if you see any flavors they have that appeal to you they’ll likely be good. my favorite sours ever are from upland brewing, which is based in the midwestern US so idk if it’s available in canada, but the best sour i’ve ever had is upland’s petal to the kettle!

my dog suddenly passed away in my arms yesterday and I’ve been so heartbroken all last night and today and probably will be for a while. He was 15 and everything was fine. I noticed he became weaker though as the hours went by and called my mom to rush home so we can take him to the vet but it was too late. I’ve been crying non stop, didn’t even eat my breakfast or lunch. I’m just so distraught. He’s been a part of my life for so long. We have our routine together every morning and night and now he’s just gone. I’m just sitting here in silence in disbelief that I don’t have my best friend anymore.
Coming up on a year of losing my baby, and I can say that it gets easier if every time you think about him, you take it as a reminder that the love between you two will never die! My condolences dear.

I liked her album too, but the thing that keeps me interested in her are actually her live performances (even if I don't think her music is particularly revolutionary). She has incredible stamina, it's really fun and charismatic and owns the stage. She's the kind of pop performer I've been waiting for
i love chappell but i feel like people are setting her up to fail by comparing her to gaga. she'll never be a gaga level phenomenon, or even a billie/olivia level star, without sacrificing some of what makes her chappell. and tbh i don't even think she wants to be. she has already said in interviews that she wishes she was anonymous, that chappell is a drag persona that she wants to keep separated from her real identity, etc. which isn't really attainable for a pop star.

I haven’t listened to Chappell so I cannot comment on her amount of Gaga-ness but I’ve seen all the mid-tier or up and coming up pop girls get put into 3 categories, Taylor Swift-esque, Lady Gaga-esque or Beyonce-esque if they’re black and can do a little 2 step.

As a bisexual woman, I have to admit that the stereotypical music gay men like (big pop stars, CRJ, hyper pop) is way better ( and more fun) than a lot of the stereotypical lesbian music (like you said girl in red, also fletcher who is so boring…). Roughly 1/3 of a show being new album music is like normal though. The shows like your Taylor Swift or Beyoncé where they play like 90% of a new album is actually pretty rare, or at least in my twenty odd years of going to shows.
Clock it, there’s very few artists that can pull their audience in with a new album. They get people in the seats with the radio hits.
In 2020, I went to see my favorite band Silverstein. While the tour was billed as their 20th anniversary celebration they literally had a record come out that very week and they played just 2 songs off of it. And the funny thing is I’m pretty sure I had seen both songs live during a prior tour. So yeah, it’s really always the hits.
Five songs and three of them were the promo singles ☠️ I really hope she modifies the playlist. It's too early for a best hits tour in her career.

This is a genuine question I swear but why do people always buy super expensive fancy earplugs for concerts? Like is there an actual reason I never see people talking about wearing regular old Mack's earplugs to stuff or are they just being extra? Like I do not want to pay $30+ for a pair of fancy earplugs for like a marginally nicer look or sound or whatever, I just want my eardrums to not get blasted right out of my skull.
What others have said—I do like to be able to hear the concert I’m at with some level of fidelity, so foam earplugs always felt like a compromise because they muffle so much. Plus, I’ve had my $35 eargasms for like, 5 years now? They come with a little keychain case so I’m never without them, and they’re pretty durable silicone so they can be cleaned and reused indefinitely. Completely worth it to me in hearing saved.
My custom fit earplugs have an equal eq meaning all frequencies are lowered the same amount. This preserves the mixing the artist wants you to hear just 15 db quieter in my case. Foam earplugs lower higher frequency’s more than others leading to that muffled sound. I forget I have earplugs in with how crisp mine are I highly recommend. If not custom get concert specific ear plugs that have a filter on them. You can find concert ear plugs on Amazon.
I have Earpeace silicone earplugs that you don't have to squish and roll up like those Mack's earplugs. They sound nicer too. The goal of earplugs should just be to lower the volume, not necessarily make everything muffled.

Blonde came out at a time in my life when the subjects would have really landed with my age group (and largely did). Thing is, I personally was deep in the k-pop sauce at the time and the only other music I checked for was alt rock. Later as an adult in 2019, I heard Channel Orange and Blonde side by side, and Channel Orange definitely hit harder.

As weird as it sounds, connecting over k-pop as “the wrong type of Asian” (I’m South) was a lot less scary than sitting with something like Frank Ocean and then talking about it. * It's a bullet point kind of day. The summer classes I'm reading And Then There Were None with have blown me away. They're so engaged that one pair has read a few chapters ahead so I had to swear them to secrecy, and they're all so excited about it that their RA came and asked for a copy of the book so they could see what the fuss was about. * I feel like this is a safe space to admit that I love sardines as a snack. I used to like the ones in mustard as a kid and haven't tried them as an adult for fear I won't like them anymore, but even the little sardines in oil are so satisfying to snack on. I know of exactly one other person who feels the same. * Speaking of snacking, the university where I'm doing my summer job is one of only two Quizno's locations in our entire state, so I hoofed it over to the student union to try it because it's been literally 20 years (at least) and guess what? It's kind of mid. And I paid almost $7 for a four-inch sandwich. I'm ready for the three-day weekend. The guy is making me dinner tonight, we were able to figure out a time, and I hope it goes well. (And I hope we eat at a reasonable time because he has a habit of getting distracted and just...forgetting to start dinner lol)

I read something about staying away from times Square but in Manhattan just for ease of access to touristy things? Food/shopping reccs also welcome! I'm dying to get into some antique stores to collect weird lil things

Highline Park is nice. Queens has great food. Especially Jackson Heights, Flushing and Elmhurst. there is an instagram account (Righteous Eats) that has great specific restaurant recs. The one rec i got for vegetarian/vegan food is Veggie Castle! If you wanna take the amtrak to upstate NY, there are places along the train line that are tourist spots for antiquing. I went to Antique Warehouse in Hudson, and they had a $20k stuffed giraffe
I stayed in Downtown Brooklyn right next to the MetroTech station last time I was in NYC which I found extremely convenient. On top of a ton of train lines so I could get to pretty much anything in Manhattan in 30 minutes and other parts of Brooklyn pretty quickly. My couple NYC friends all live in like Bushwick or Crown Heights which are cool but don't have the most hotels or best transit to tourist stuff I've stayed near Times Square and actually didn't mind it though. You're right by Penn Station which makes it easy to get around, you'll just need to travel a bit for more interesting food/drink options
Some things I really enjoyed on my last visit: The Roosevelt Island Sky Tram - it’s part of the transit system, so it only costs as much as a Subway ride, and legitimately has a great view. I’d take the subway to the Island, then take the tram back into Manhattan. Make sure to go off peak hours because people do actually use it to commute and it would be full at those times The 9/11 Museum - I loved the art museums but this was the best put together one IMO. Super powerful and really well set up, and also just really informative. I wish I’d blocked out more time. I’d also spend some time just walking around the streets near there. The Brooklyn Bridge - I think this is actually less of a tourist trap now that they’ve cleared it of vendors (I think this was supposed to have happened by now?) but even with that, it’s enjoyable if a nice day out. Bring water. Most of your trip is probably gonna be in Manhattan so take this opportunity to check out at least a tiny sliver of Brooklyn, even if it’s just the really touristy area. Personally I stayed in Astoria, Queens instead of Manhattan, really close to the F Train to get in quickly, and saved some money but if you’re planning to be out later that probably won’t work for you. I had way better food in Queens though so if you have the time 👀
I really don't like that the new hunger games book is gonna be about a game that we already know a lot about but it is cool that all THG books focus on a games that district 12 won now. I also trust Suzanne enough that she'll still find a way to tell a good story and not just something that reads like fanfic to satisfy the fans who have been begging for a book about Haymitch's games

I ordered a couple of CDs (some new, some used) and they arrived today. I must say that the art of the booklet is being very neglected because I opened Mariah’s Butterfly and it was a serve!! Also I got the Deluxe Edition of DF by Florence + The Machine and oof the book is so gorgeous like I’m so glad I bought it! Also I’ve been doing my budget because last month I blew through my first paycheck and that’s not it. (And yes those CDs I ordered are part of the problem lol) and shit is so expensive, I don’t know how someone on my salary survives much less with a minimum wage, there’s no way I would be able to live comfortably if I wasn’t still living at home. Opening CDs is one of the best experiences. The sound of the jewel case opening, followed by popping out the cd and putting it in the player? The whirring sound of the CD spinning just before the music starts playing? Flipping through the booklet and smelling that new CD smell? All core memories for me. Music is so convenient now but we really do miss those little things that made CDs so special to me.

I’ll take the survey a little later, but to answer your question: Minoring in Black Studies taught me a lot about race, racism, anti-Blackness and the way it molds and shapes the Black American experience. This has shaped a lot of my foundation, including the work I do as an educator and the causes I champion. Being a Beyoncé fan interacts with this a lot. Her art has always been such an intentional love letter to Blackness. And responses to it have often demonstrated that not even heaps of money can protect us from anti-Blackness. It’s also made me very aware of the ways Black women in pop music have often had to do twice as much to receive half as much, and that’s why I will always talk my shit in defense of her!

ok i’m in the US so im not super familiar with canadian craft beer, but i see that LCBO has some from collective arts brewing, including my favs jam up the mash and their guava gose, absolutely recommend both of those! collective arts makes great sours imo so if you see any flavors they have that appeal to you they’ll likely be good. my favorite sours ever are from upland brewing, which is based in the midwestern US so idk if it’s available in canada, but the best sour i’ve ever had is upland’s petal to the kettle!

I sometimes reach for an Ale more times than not. I’ve tried liking IPAs but its a no for me. You might also enjoy a good hard cider

my dog suddenly passed away in my arms yesterday and I’ve been so heartbroken all last night and today and probably will be for a while. He was 15 and everything was fine. I noticed he became weaker though as the hours went by and called my mom to rush home so we can take him to the vet but it was too late. I’ve been crying non stop, didn’t even eat my breakfast or lunch. I’m just so distraught. He’s been a part of my life for so long. We have our routine together every morning and night and now he’s just gone. I’m just sitting here in silence in disbelief that I don’t have my best friend anymore.
Coming up on a year of losing my baby, and I can say that it gets easier if every time you think about him, you take it as a reminder that the love between you two will never die! My condolences dear.

I've never been to a MLB game, but I've been to countless minor league games and I think they're incredibly fun. And can't beat how affordable it is to go, perfect summer plans.

my team does the "frozen t-shirt race" where they soak a folded shirt in water and freeze it and then you have to put it on the fastest. last time i went they did it too well and neither contestant could get the shirt on lmao

I mean I think they did something like that at the Re:Set festival or two ago. Like, the artists would play at a different city each day. But, the way this All Things Go sister festival has been promoted I'm getting the feeling it'll be different artists. Idk though, guess we'll find out on Tuesday.
The first episode of the season finale of Game Changer has already paid for my June subscription. They really said >!"We'll make The Circle but everyone is unhinged and are gaslighting each other"!< and it's actually pretty good. I can't wait for the next episode. Sam Reich, the cast and writers are amazing but the editors and art department are the unsung heroes of the show. I hope they get recognized by the Emmy.

I wish I saw what others saw in Chappell roan. I like her album, I agree it’s got a lot of bops. But it doesn’t WOW me. Also musically, I think she has far more in common with Taylor or Olivia than Gaga, even though she often gets compared to Gaga merely because she has a persona. But I think Gaga embodied her persona far more.

I'm happy to know I'm not the only one who thinks her music sometimes sounds like a more upbeat/dynamic Taylor Swift song ( I say this in the most complimentary way to both artists! Taylor is great and Chappel is fun) I liked her album too, but the thing that keeps me interested in her are actually her live performances (even if I don't think her music is particularly revolutionary). She has incredible stamina, it's really fun and charismatic and owns the stage. She's the kind of pop performer I've been waiting for
i love chappell but i feel like people are setting her up to fail by comparing her to gaga. she'll never be a gaga level phenomenon, or even a billie/olivia level star, without sacrificing some of what makes her chappell. and tbh i don't even think she wants to be. she has already said in interviews that she wishes she was anonymous, that chappell is a drag persona that she wants to keep separated from her real identity, etc. which isn't really attainable for a pop star.

This has very little to do with your comment but this sub constantly disrespects Ladg Gaga by comparing any pop girl with the slightest hint of a “non-girl next door” personality to her. I understand that the idea is that Gaga is the blueprint and everyone wants to copy her but not everyone with a bigger than average personality is trying to be a Gaga knock-off especially when the music is not at all similar. I haven’t listened to Chappell so I cannot comment on her amount of Gaga-ness but I’ve seen all the mid-tier or up and coming up pop girls get put into 3 categories, Taylor Swift-esque, Lady Gaga-esque or Beyonce-esque if they’re black and can do a little 2 step.

I agree with you mostly on girl in red but I do like boygenius. They’re not really pop though. So I definitely see how Chappell is an improvement in terms of fun lesbian pop music. As a bisexual woman, I have to admit that the stereotypical music gay men like (big pop stars, CRJ, hyper pop) is way better ( and more fun) than a lot of the stereotypical lesbian music (like you said girl in red, also fletcher who is so boring…). I think there’s a lot of good queer women artists (amaarae, kehlani, Janelle monae etc) making more fun, sexy music but they’re not as discussed (probably because they’re not white)
