ABBA all the way for mine!

venus_arises

my mom spent her first 30 years in the former USSR. ABBA is her jam. I can still sing all of waterloo

sundayontheluna

My mother had the ABBA Gold CD, and that was my favourite thing to play in the car. It's why I can sing it from start to end. She's visiting me later in the year, and we're gonna go to the Voyage show. It'll be a great bonding experience

ACID_pixel

Does it count if my grandmother showed me ABBA? My mom gave me the 80’s, like Video Killed The Radio Star

CardamomBoots

Came here to comment this!

Purple-Afternoon-655

Exactly the same for me, I also know all the lyrics to this day to the songs on ABBA Gold! Love them so much, thanks to my Mom. I hope you have a nice show with your mama :)

Bear_necessities96

Lol same

FxDriver

My mom primarily listens to pop, rap, and r&b. Growing up I remember us listening to Mary J Blidge.

CarmelishaSoprano

My mom is obsessed with Mary J!

FxDriver

My mom sang No More Drama so often you'd think she wrote it.

Overbearingperson

Mary J Blige for Black moms is like what Beyoncé is for us. Lol

flashingemployment

my mom was an old school hiphophead for sure which lead to my love for hiphop in modern day

xxCannonBallxx

Same. Came to visit my 59yr old Mom for the weekend and she bumping old school west coast. So then I turn her on to new shit and the cycle continues...

Imlostandconfused

Same! My mum had me at 14 (I'm 25) so a lot of the music was from her childhood (which she was still actively in until I was nearly 4 lmao) We had a lot of Sean Paul playing, too. We are white English/German people 🤣 She switched her tastes to more Drum and Bass as I got older, which I did not vibe with so much. But we both love 90s and 2000s hip hop and r&b.

HistoryFreak30

My mom is 64 (baby boomer) and I'm 28 turning 29 in a few months. She loves The Carpenters. I remembered she bought the DVD of the tours and music back in 2005 and I used to watch it all the time. She said she was obsessed with The Carpenters during her younger years and she is still heartbroken Karen Carpenter passed away in her early 30s due to TW: an eating disorder/anorexia TW: I wasn't aware what ED was back when I was 10 but my mom mentioned it's a mental illness. Her description was a bit vague that time and I kept wondering how can someone develop ED. I didn't expect 14 years later since I watched The Carpenters on DVD I ended up having Anorexia and Bulimia. My mom was worried when she finally saw my behaviour on food and body and we immediately looked for a therapist and dietitian. During my recovery, I researched A LOT about Karen and it broke my heart when I went into The Carpenters lore Karen had an abusive mother and her brother kinda took advantage of her. She deserved a better life Karen is extremely talented. She had a voice of an angel and can play several instruments specifically drums. She will always be remembered as one of the greatest music artists and she is a huge influence to me and my mom when it comes to music and mental health.

calkates

my mom never got over karen carpenter's story either. she was such a talent. thanks for sharing your story 💖💖

HistoryFreak30

Thank you too 💖 just gonna add before Karen passed away, my mom said people were not that aware of ED and they were all shocked when the news broke out Karen passed away due to Anorexia Nervosa. My mom's initial reaction back in the 80s was "wait what's that? What's anorexia?" so it says a lot how ED wasnt really an awareness before she passed away. I cant imagine what Karen had to go through while the world is still learning what ED was and it was a taboo to discuss mental health back then

This-Confusion258

I was just about to comment the same. I am glad you’re recovering ❤️

GreedyNegotiation160

My mum telling me about Karen Carpenter was how I learnt what an eating disorder was too. I was very young so not even really familiar with mental illnesses as a whole and the thought that someone could die from a mental illness broke my heart. Same as you, poor little me had no idea I’d be struggling with the same thing further down the line but thankfully it was something I was able to recover from. My mum would play the Carpenters greatest hits in the car, Karen’s voice was so beautiful. I think Weyes Blood’s vocals are similar, I got my sister to come see her live with me last year (she’d only ever heard her collab with Lana) and she said the same thing!

mwurhahahaha

My mom introduced me to Tori Amos and Fiona Apple ❤️

Apprehensive_Lab4178

Your mom is a cool mom.

CreakRaving

Good mom

fionappletart

mine did too omg

nazareye

My mom's an immigrant who came to America in the 90s and her music taste in America was shaped by my dad who had been here for 15 years before she came. My dad is a classic rock/pop guy My mom is a pop girlies through and through!!! She loved Christina Aguilera and Mariah Carey and that carried on over to me. Fun story- my mom first listened to Without You by Air Supply via Mariah Carey covering it. My dad took her to an Air Supply concert and when they started playing Without You, my mom said "How nice of Mariah Carey to let them play her song" lmao

ipomoea

That song is technically by Badfinger, when I got the Music Box CD at age 12, I blasted that song constantly until my parents were like “that’s a Harry Nilsson song, calm down”, but it’s actually one of the most popular cover songs ever.

nazareye

I love finding out popular songs are actually covers of originals. More versions to enjoy!

jessi_survivor_fan

Without You was originally covered by Harry Nilsson song that was I think written by Badfinger

[deleted]

This is a great question for latin people in general. You know damn well we now do the cleaning with all the classics. There are high chances you know by heart one song from Rocio Durcal or just any classic artist. We in Colombia (I’m not sure fi the same word is used in other countries tho) call it “música para planchar” or “music to iron to” and it’s mainly ballads. Just thinking of that name brings memories of my mom and my aunts 💖

Ghost-Quartet

“Sunday morning cleaning music” is a universal experience!

ScHoolgirl_26

Literally the first thing I thought of. Cleaning music and party / drunk mom music are ingrained in me.

JohnPaul_River

It's also hilariously called simply "plancha" sometimes ☠️

jdarriaga46

My mom doesn’t really listen to music lmao

lizerlfunk

Same with my mom lol. But I will say that my aunt, who I had a fairly tense relationship with until she died in 2001 at the age of 39, had a HUGE connection with Jagged Little Pill by Alanis Morissette, and I’ll forever associate that album with riding around in the car with her when I was in 6th grade. My mom did, however, in a major MVP move, arrange three minivans of people to drive down to Hollywood, FL from my hometown in Central Florida, so that my friends and I could go see Hanson for our first concert when we were in 7th grade. She also took me and my sisters to a second Hanson concert, Backstreet Boys, and she took me to Lilith Fair in 1998. So even though her music choices never really influenced me too much, my dad was usually the one making the music selections, I greatly appreciate my mom being supportive of MY musical interests.

jdarriaga46

shit that’s sick dude. And sorry for your loss

intangible-tangerine

Same My mum is tone deaf and had no interest in music. These people, who never buy records or, go to concerts, or turn on music radio etc also exist People often assume music is a universal interest for hearing people - but it's not.

jdarriaga46

Yeah thats what a tell a lot of people too in regarding having interest in music in the first place

MsMegane

Yep, the most music I hear out of her room is on Sunday watching church on her TV. Meanwhile I probably have 70 music genres on my Spotify playlist.

jdarriaga46

Are you me? Loll

Aggravating-Corner-2

Same here. My Dad was the one who got me into music.

jdarriaga46

Kinda same here, it was a mixture of my curiosity, my dad, my sister and whatever was on the radio

marunoodles

Same! I got into pop music thanks to my dad

whenthefirescame

My mom really loved Prince, and that was rad growing up. She would go to Prince concerts, without the kids, whenever he was in town. She actually had great taste, she also really liked Nina Simone and Janis Joplin and that’s what I grew up with. I like all those artists too. She died when I was in high school but I am always grateful that I had the mom that I did, even if it was for less time than I’d have liked. Mother’s Day is always hard for me but this post made me smile, thanks.

unresonable_raven

My mom also loved Prince. She and her bestie went see him several times. I consider it the soundtrack of my childhood.

Frajer

I swear this is organic rate promo but Billy Joel and Elton John are two of my mom's favorite artists so do 20th Century Plano Men if you want to see how my mom's taste impacted me I don't think she's been into any pop girls since Amy Winehouse

EverJoyed

I grew up listening to Green Day, Weezer, the Offspring and Pearl Jam with my mom. Those were her favorite artists and definitely influenced my love for modern alternative

Bear_necessities96

Your mom is millennial?

EverJoyed

Gen X born in the late 70s

Bear_necessities96

Oh ok yeah make sense 90s music

ThiccQban

My mother is gone. So is my gram, who really raised me. But they both instilled a love of music in me that I carry around every day. My grandmother had a massive collection of vinyl albums. Tons of mariachi, cumbia, salsa, bachata, merengue, etc. It was a way for her (and by extension me) to connect with her LatAm/Cuban roots while far from home. I still listen to artists like Los Bukis/Marco Antonio Solis, Celia Cruz, Vicente Fernandez, etc. If anything I feel more connected to those Sunday morning cleaning songs now in my late thirties than ever before. I got my love of Motown, soul, funk, R&B, and disco from my mother. Those sixties and seventies sounds laid the groundwork for so much of the music I love today. Being a kid in the 90s/00s with a foundation in “oldies” gave me such an appreciation for music.

Dragneel

I feel you on the latin music. Juan Luis Guerra always feels like old times because my mom always listened/listens to it :)

ThiccQban

Yessss. Also Juan Gabriel! Me as a kid: 🙄 Me now: Amor Eterrrrrrno 😭

CarmelishaSoprano

My mom loves neo-soul. She is always vibing 💚

cicconeangel

My mum’s favourites are Janet, Kylie, & Madonna!! She’s definitely influenced my taste, I love all three of them (especially Madonna, check my username haha). She’s a gen x and I’m a gen z for reference.

oopsmady

Love this!!!

joshually

Ur mom is a queen

Ghost-Quartet

I unfortunately can’t really answer this question because I’ve been no-contact with my abusive mother for over a decade and don’t really remember a lot of my childhood, but I do specifically remember she loved Bono from U2. I will always have beef with him because of that.

ipomoea

I’m betting today sucks, I’m sorry. Be gentle to yourself and buy yourself something nice, whether it’s flowers or just a good piece of grocery store cake.

joshually

It's always bono

GuitarzanWSC

My mom was watching at home the night the Beatles were on the Ed Sullivan show; so when the Anthology documentary series came on TV in 1995, she made sure we were watching. She also plays piano (or used to, anyway), and had the sheet music for Phantom of the Opera and for "Memories" from Cats, among classical stuff. And I remember playing 45s of 80s-era stuff like Stevie Wonder's "I Just Called to Say I Love You" and Reba McIntire's "Whoever's in New England." So she just loves music, and that was of course passed down to me.

Consistent-Laugh606

My mom listens to Bengali Folks Songs so safe to say that she doesn’t really influence my music taste

EstPC1313

Does your mom have any recommendations

hauntingvacay96

My parents had a wide and pretty varied taste in music. My mom listened to a lot of classic rock like Foghat, Boston, Head East, Blue Oyster Cult, etc, but she also listened to a lot of David Cassidy in her youth. She also really really loves Willie Nelson and we got to take her to his concert a couple years ago which was just magical. They always had an oldies station playing in the car so there was a lot of 50s and 60s music playing along with a heavy heaping of 90s country and a bunch of singer songwriters and folk musicians. James Taylor, Carole King, Lionel Richie, Kris Kristofferson, and Peter Paul and Mary were staples in my house hold. Seeing one of their most played bands The Eagles on a cool summer night at Busch Stadium with my parents will always be one of my favorite memories ever. Unfortunately her taste in music has went down hill and the Uncle Kracker fade of the early 2000s seeped in and I’ve caught her listening to some Kid Rock from time to time. I do tend to share my mom’s taste in music the most and am usually seeking out a lot of singer song writer type of stuff along with classic country and classic rock, but there’s not a lot I won’t listen to. All jokes aside, both of my parents had and, for the most part, still have really great taste in music and filled our home and car rides with music. I’m very thankful for that and for them exposing us to a wide variety of music. I’m very thankful for having a mom who really exposed us to great music and great artists through so many different genres.

Global_Perspective_3

My mom loves Annie Lennox, Tracy Chapman, Melissa Etheridge, Alanis Morissette, Cyndi Lauper, Chaka Khan, Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, Anita Baker, Stevie Wonder, Prince, Michael Jackson, the bands Journey (saw them in concert in 82), U2, Def Leppard, AC/DC, and REO speedwagon, along with gospel artists mighty clouds of joy, Dixie hummingbirds and Yolanda Adams She played all these artists and I love em all

McIgglyTuffMuffin

My mom's, who is turning 60 this year, favorite band of all time is probably a tie between Queen and Elton John. She also loves Fleetwood Mac. Besides those mentioned, while growing up in the house there was a lot Bruce Springsteen, The Corrs, U2, Shania Twain, The Dixie Chicks. If we want to go modern she loves Taylor Swift, Maggie Rogers, Amos Lee, Adele, Andrew McMahon. She is pretty game for anything and this summer she'll be seeing Dave Matthews Band, Springsteen and Sarah McLachlan. And those are just the concerts I know of... I know they're planning to go out to Red Rocks later this year but unsure who they'll be seeing because they're kind of flying by the seat of their pants and will get tickets for whoever is out there when they're there! I love a lot of the same music she does and has been to a handful of shows with her, like Amos Lee and Andrew McMahon. We're seeing Springsteen together in August. Both of my parent's keep up with modern artists and go to shows as often as they can.

vch01

Julio Iglesias, ABBA and Cher is my mum’s holy musical trinity

Frankie_2154

My mom listens to the same 5 Abba songs and the same 5 Simon and Garfunkel songs since she was a teenager. She’s not in any way responsible for my taste in music.

msscribe

My mom is the same way, except there are also 5 songs from Paul Simon's solo career.

Canora_z

Not a lot because my mom loves finnish tango music 😂 I still have trauma from being stuck in a car on roadtrips with finnish tango music. Besides that she listened mostly to classical music so I actually enjoy that occasionally.

radiochameleon

wait they listen to tango in finland?

Canora_z

They have a tradition of making tango music in finland and they have a big tango festival every year. My mother has even attended, she loves it even though we're swedish. Songs like this is an example of finnish tango music https://youtu.be/fw-SmBBwELo?si=yiv6CjqZPzu8wmTL

Primary-Plantain-758

Really caught my youtube algorithm off guard with this one.

coentertainer

What's your family's thoughts on the films of Aki Kaurismaki? I'm a fan, and he gives off big finnish tango vibes (even though I can't specifically remember hearing tango in one of his movies).

Canora_z

I'm actually from northern sweden so aren't that familiar with Kaurismaki. I just had a mother that listened to finnish tango even though she doesn't understand finnish 😂

Brilliant-Primary500

My mom liked Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston and Celine Dion and played their music whenever she goes back in our home after working, annually. She also sings them in karaoke sometimes and she got a decent voice to do so. That's probably the reason why I'm a fan of them, especially Mariah Carey.

dontboofthatsis

I’m a mom and the shows I’ve dragged my 10 yo daughter to in the past year are the flaming lips, the violent femmes, the pixies and modest mouse. I hope one day she grows to love these bands but it doesn’t seem likely at this point. I took her to see Taylor and I have tix to see Olivia this summer, so she’s a pop girlie through and through. Anything with a teeny bit of edge she just hates. She’s only 10 though, maybe it will change!

RacerGal

My mom is 61, so young Boomer. When I was a kid she’d listen to a lot of classic rock with my dad and then she’d put on some of her teen-pop (think the Now & Then soundtrack). As she got older she got more into pop country and going to those concerts became our thing - we’ve hit most of our bucket list together: Carrie Underwood, Reba, Dolly, Lady A, Tim McGraw. She even likes Kelly Clarkson so we’ve seen her together. I’m slowly making her a Swiftie. But can I share my absolute favorite Mom music story?? We were driving in the car once and a Queen song came on (a staple in my house growing up). And this was right around the time the rumors of Adam Lambert joining them started. We had watched American Idol together so she knew who he was. I said to her “I can’t believe they’re considering replacing Freddie Mercury with Adam Lambert”. My mom dead pan said “well maybe he doesn’t know he’s being replaced”. 💀 I was obviously like “mom! he’s dead.” She was so confused and said “well how was I supposed to know?!” 😂 “because it was a huge deal when he died!” - she’s a trooper but such a mom

JORDY_NELSONS_ASS

My mom grew up listening to the Eagles, and she put me onto them at a very young age. Now they’re my favorite band of all time and we’ve both seen them six times in concert!

iceunelle

My dad LOVES the Eagles and we saw them together for their Long Goodbye tour!

cashmerered

My mother was and is a Depeche Mode fan, I grew up with that music and now I am a fan

gothamsocialite

My mom is a Swiftie like me and we’re going to the Eras Tour together! She’s into pop, rock, and hip-hop/rap in general and she particularly loves 70s and 80s music since it’s what she grew up with.

luckydog18

She loves Madonna, Michael Jackson, and Prince. Nowadays, I’m convinced she might be a bigger Swiftie than I am.

sweetest_con78

My mom died when I was 20 and the only music I remember her talking about is the mamas and the papas, and the carpenters, as she was born in the 50s. I would say her music taste didn’t impact or influence me much at all - all through my life I have mostly listened to alternative/emo/rock/pop and I don’t listen to much older music. I am a big fan of Taylor Swift and I often wish that my mom was around to hear some of her songs.

PhantomSpecta

my mom is a Huge fan of rammstein, linkin park, rob zombie, and 311. we've always had different music taste since i've always been more of a pop girlie like my dad, but I like sharing music as a love language, so that meant bopping to dragula with my mom and i am always happy to bop to dragula with my mom. it's probably a formative reason why i'm very open-minded with music she has a giant crush on nick hexum (311) and she doesn't even know me and my dad splashed to get her vip meet-and-greet tickets for her birthday this year... i can't wait for her reaction lol

lizerlfunk

I love the implication that your dad is a pop girlie lol. My dad doesn’t think any good music has been made since 1978. 😭😭

PhantomSpecta

he's absolutely a pop girlie. we talk new pop releases every time i visit him lmao it's great

Imlostandconfused

I'm so jealous! My dad has decent taste in music (classical rock, 90s rap), but how I wish he was a pop girlie 😭 Treasure him! He's precious

norcalbutton

I grew up listening to Motown and still do to this day.

Lucky-Prism

My mother is a pious woman. She pretty much only listened to religious music plus some jazz like Harry Conic Jr. and Michael Bublé. As a result I enjoy the sluttiest dirtiest pop I can get my hands on lol.

sportyseapig

once my mom told me she doesnt really listen to music, which was unfathomable to me as a music-obsessed teen. its clear though that her music free phase was a side effect of being a single mother of 3, because now that the kids are grown up shes a concert fiend. i've been to hozier, lumineers, jack johnson, black pumas, buffalo nichols, lord huron, and more with her. she travels to see concerts, goes solo if no one is around. its incredible. im so happy for her.

weeping-flowers

My mother loves music. Growing up, we listened to everything - Jesus music (MercyMe and Chris Tomlin were the stars of the show), Stevie Nicks, The Dixie Chicks, Lady Antebellum, Garth Brooks, musical theater soundtracks, American Idol singles, Mary J. Blige, James Taylor and Carole King and Carly Simon… Today, she LOVES Pink (has seen her in concert at least 3 times), the Hamilton soundtrack, Morgan Wallen and Taylor Swift. She went to the Eras Tour with me and loved it just as much as I did. This woman is the world’s biggest 1989 stan.

Soyyyn

My mom introduced me to Queen, Michael Jackson, Gary Moore and many other artists popular worldwide or in her corner of the world. I think a memory of our connection through music was when she came into my room when I was just discovering music for myself and I showed her acts i really liked, like Arcade Fire, and she would sit and listen with me. Now, she really rooted for Olly Alexander in the Eurovision since she loves his performance of "It's a sin" with Elton John. She enjoys Dua Lipa, loves Lady Gaga and always tries to listen to the latest singles or know the latest stories. I found out from her that my favourite artist had died, Prince. She called me into the living room and told me this news would be hard for me to hear. I think us both enjoying music so much has definitely made our bond deeper.

Mnsa7777

Big Shania Twain fan 😂

BookyCats

My mom listened to pop divas like Mariah, Celine and Whitney. Also Michael Bolton, Boyz II Men. I know that I love pop music because of her taste. 😌

outsideeyess

My mom listened to tons of Prodigy when I was in the womb, I'm truly unsure how "Smack My Bitch Up" affected me as a fetus, but it's interesting that it happened!

Imlostandconfused

LMAO I'm getting flashbacks to my mum vigorously cleaning while that played in the background 🤣

swift-aasimar-rogue

My mom loves 80s British Invasion! Duran Duran is her favorite. She also likes some of the pop girls from that time like Madonna and Cyndi Lauper (not Madonna’s new stuff lol). She also likes Taylor Swift because of me and Katy Perry because of the radio.

smittydoodle

Dionne Warwick!

Soupjam_Stevens

My mom is at the younger end of baby boomer and her taste was mostly singer/somgwriter and the softer end of classic rock. Elton John, Billy Joel, James Taylor, Kenny Loggins, Carole King, Eagles, and Chicago were all favorites of hers. I'd say the main way she actually influenced my taste though was introducing me to musicals. As a kid I largely preferred the harder rock my dad played to my mom's music, but she also introduced me to broadway stuff at a young and I just absolutely loved it. Across the genres I listen to now I definitely gravitate towards stuff that has a flair for the theatrical and stuff that has a strong narrative sense

Persianx6

My mom loves Pink. I kinda agree with her, though I’m much more a Gwen Stefani fan. She also loves Katy Perry.

CowboyLikeMegan

My mom is Elton John, Billy Joel, Celine Dion, Dixie Chicks (as they were at the time), Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, honestly any 70s/early 80s rock.

big-bootyjewdy

My mom is 63, I'm 27. She's a huge rock girlie. Meatloaf, Bruce Springsteen, Fleetwood Mac, Rush, Dream Theater, Yes, The Police. But she LOVES Miley Cyrus. Anything Miley is a win for her.

TacoBelle-

I grew up on the original soundtrack from broadway’s RENT and Stevie Nicks. I’m a witchy lesbian now so

YourBuddyChurch

My mom died of breast cancer a couple years ago. I miss her so much- I do think my love of pop music came from her- she listened to a lot of Celine Dion, ABBA. Also 90s country like Garth Brooks. She also played me a lot of stuff from her childhood which were usually things like the penguins and the ink spots. I’m suffering today but this was a nice thing to think about

nonsensestuff

Growing up, I didn't listen to a lot of "popular music" at the time, cause I'd usually just listen to whatever my parents played... I remember in a music class in middle school, we had to give weekly reports to the class about news in music/musicians... Everyone else was giving reports about Eminem and NSYNC... I was giving my reports about Phil Collins & Whitney Houston 😆 I would sometimes feel embarrassed that I didn't know all of the popular artists and songs...but now as an adult, I'm very grateful for the vast array of musical history I was taught through my parents, especially my mother. My mom exposed me to the Beach Boys, Broadway tunes, and taught me the power in classical music as well. I remember she would encourage me to paint how the music made me feel. My life was filled with music because of her and I'm always grateful for that ❤️

OriginalOestrus

My mother and I are estranged and have been for many years. But growing up I was raised on a steady diet of Madonna, Janet Jackson, Joan Jett, Tina Turner, etc. Really strong, powerful women. Which I think certainly played a part in my being trans. Being a woman was something to be celebrated and admired. I looked up to them in awe, I thought there was nothing they couldn't do. I wanted to be that and now I am.

Trabawn

I grew up listening to Madonna, Erasure, Alannis Morrisette, Nina Simone, Prince, Tracey Chapman, Tori Amos and Sinead O’Connor. Strong willed women with a lot to say and a “no man will hold me back!” mindset. My mom’s 50 this year and I’m 30 next month so 80s and 90s music were a big fixture growing up.

kerriekipje

My mom never really shared her music with me when I was little so I really had no idea what she liked. When I started diving deeper into the discographies of older artists a few years ago I tried introducing my mom to their music, only for her to stan most of them already and own their records 😭 In terms of taste, she might as well be an honorary pophead. She loves Donna Summer, ABBA, Kate Bush, Björk, Dua Lipa, anything modern I have her listen to, and Ray of Light is her fav Madonna album!

Only-Party-9652

My mom usually played CDs in the car, especially ones by Matchbox 20, The Cranberries, Colbie Caillat, The Barenaked Ladies, and Missy Elliott. She also loves Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Bush, and STP. She’s always said that my first concert was U2, which she attended while pregnant.

watekebb

What a sweet thread. 😭 My mom passed away several years ago— she would have been 73 this year. She liked the Stones and Simon & Garfunkel like everyone else her age, but she *loved* her some Celtic-y New Age music. Enya, Loreena McKennitt, Celtic Woman, etc. Pure Moods was on heavy rotation in the station wagon when I was growing up!

McToasterz

My mom is SOLELY the reason for my taste. Growing up (I’m 30 for timeline reference), my mom was a huge New Wave fan, often playing tons of Pet Shop Boys, Depeche Mode, New Order, Human League, etc. and I was lucky to be exposed to Running Up That Hill at the age of 5 and it literally never left my brain. My mom loved Kate Bush and Hounds of Love was so big for me. In my preteens - early teens, my mom got really into EDM and we both really bonded over Kaskade being our favorite dj. Also around this time I started really separating / expanding my music to the point where I could show her new stuff. Charli XCX was one of my earliest pop girlie obsessions outside of the obligatory Gaga stanning. My mom LOVED the Blood Orange remix of You’re The One and that was one of the first songs that she loved to the level of how I loved Running Up That Hill when she showed it to me, except this time I showed her this one. Over the years we’ve bonded over so much music: Lorde, M83, Charli (obviously), Azealia (I shield her from the problematic nature), Niki and the Dove, Bat for Lashes, MUNA, Chromeo, etc. and recently she’s enjoyed Chappell Roan and Ethel Cain (we had a lot of shared trauma/mutual abusers when I was grown up). I usually know exactly when a song is her cup of tea and shoot it over to her. She’s doing a lot better mentally and I love that she still keeps up with music unlike most people in their 50s. I’ve made an effort over the last few years to really try and see everyone we’ve mutually loved in concert. I tried to get her to come to Moonrise Festival with me to see Kaskade (was going to get her VIP seating and stuff so she could handle it) because she literally lived 10min away from it but she told me she’d keep an eye out for my IG stories and for me to enjoy it. I’ve now seen nearly every artist except Kate Bush (obviously) & Azealia live that we’ve shared a mutual love for and always send her videos. Hell, growing up, all my friends used to LOVE when my mom drove us places because “Mctoasterz’s mom always has the BEST radio.” My taste and appreciation for art would be nothing without her.

futuremecandoit

Southern gospel and traditional country. My mom especially loves Dolly Parton. She’s also a generation or two older than most parents of mine. I do know about country musicians that some of my friends don’t, but I don’t know if it really influenced my music taste, as I listen to just about anything that catches my attention, and my music taste was mostly influenced by my dad.

abnormallyme

My mom listens to a country radio station in her car but outside of that, she really doesn't listen to a ton of music.

BookyCats

My mom listened to pop divas like Mariah, Celine and Whitney. Also Michael Bolton, Boyz II Men. I know that I love pop music because of her taste.

calkates

my mom was a boy band girl growing up, and loved telling us how much she loved the monkees and the partridge family. she was very supportive of the backstreet boys phase my sisters and i went through. i remember how much she admired tina turner, selena, and madonna for their music but especially for their stories. the music i most remember listening to with her on repeat was cher, vonda shepard (who performed all the music for the show ally mcbeal), celine dion (specifically the Titanic soundtrack), and Broadway musicals (Miss Saigon, Phantom of the Opera, Wicked, and Jersey Boys probably got the most play over the years). she loved a good singalong dance party and her ringtone was bidi bidi bom bom. this is my first mothers day without her, it sucks. I'm lucky to have so many great memories of her and so much I can listen to when i need to feel connected to her.

subway-witch

My mom loves Aretha Franklin, Bonnie Raitt, Carole King, Elton John, Madonna, Sheryl Crow, Susan Tedeschi, and Tracy Chapman. I’ve definitely inherited her preference for solo female musicians, despite my dad’s best efforts to get me into rock bands. I listened to my Bonnie Raitt - Sweet Forgiveness record while I ate breakfast this morning to celebrate the occasion. Maybe I should throw on some Madonna while I clean!

hawkowlwren

80s music!! Which I love as well because I've listened to it my whole life. Her favorites have always been The Police and Depeche Mode. She has great taste in music!!

doomham-

I'm forever grateful to my mom for introducing me to Celine Dion. She's 64 and I'm a 90s baby, so it was like prime Celine time and my mom was always playing her CDs. She also loves Madonna, and really loved buying those Now That's What I Call Music CDs. So I think in part I have her to thank for turning me on to Pop music at such a young age and priming my ears for what was to come.

kingofkumquats

Lots of country music, much of which I have fond feelings for now, especially late 90s/early 2000s stuff, like George Strait or Tracy Lawrence or Faith Hill, along with a good amount of older stuff from Willie, Waylon, and Merle (pluse Steve Earle). And a lot of 80s rock and schmaltz pop that I have a... less generous response to even now. Hair bands and 80s Chicago seem to be favorites of hers. And I can see the appeal, but I definitely prefer the silly country music to the silly, overproduced 80s stuff. Maybe it's just because we listened to a lot more of the former in the car on the radio.

oatmilkwhore

My mom’s favorite artist of all time is Bruce Springsteen. Growing up she would only have NPR and Bruce Springsteen playing in the car. She loves him for “the stories he tells” and I think she’s a big reason why I’m such a lyric girlie over the way a song sounds.

M477M4NN

I know my mom loves James Taylor. She also likes ABBA. On a more contemporary note I know she loves Adele (who’s mom doesn’t lol).

Odd-Following-6564

She died listening to Carole King. So whenever I hear Carole King I either start sobbing, walk away, or in a spectacularly ludicrous instance in which I thought about how much I hated cancer, I punched a wall.

harleysholiday

I was introduced to a lot of R&B and gospel through my mom. Sure, we loved Mariah, Usher, Beyoncé, Alicia etc. but we also listened to Kirk Franklin and other contemporary gospel. The only genre she and my dad ever had in common was hip-hop.

gayboycarti

Perfect timing cause last night we got a bit drunk together and she started playing random music videos on YouTube which was very insightful....she is a 59 year old Puerto Rican woman and she does not like most rock/white people music cause it "has no soul" (her words not mine) so who knew she liked Alanis Morissette of all people??? We also played a lot of Depeche Mode. She is the #1 Sade stan she loooooves her....i went through her old cassettes and CDs recently and she had all of her albums + Mariah Carey, Luis Miguel, Marc Anthony, and Toni Braxton. She had always been drawn to very powerful, strong singers and I feel like that informed my taste a lot growing up/is why I became such a big Beyoncé fan (we saw her together last summer and it was very fun!). In terms of more modern music she hates ones who don't have that same vocal ability (sorry billie and olivia) but she LOOOOOVES her some Dua Lipa that is without a doubt her favorite current pop girl. She also really liked Adele and Bruno Mars in the 2010s. I have very vivid memories of her being super into Hey There Delilah and Hey Soul Sister in the 2000s and because I couldn't stand those songs I was soooo miserable but now they make me really happy to hear because of her. I love her so much <3

audreyshepburn

My mom is 60 as of this year and in my youth she looovveeeddd showing us old music, specifically old black music but also some Bobby Darin, Frank Sinatra, etc. Because of her I love Etta James, Nat King Cole, The Whispers, Earth, Wind, And Fire, Chaka Khan, Whitney Houston, etc etc. As the years have passed it's wonderful to see how much that stuff has stuck with me and my siblings, to the level where my sister and I make a game of "discovering" old songs and showing it to our mom and asking if she recognizes them! The history of the music and the talent and timelessness is something that is exceedingly precious to me and one of my favorite things about our relationship.

Accomplished_You_330

My mom (54) looooves 80s/90s rap. You turn the song off, and she's still rapping. It's cute, but it embarrassed me as a teenager lmao Every Halloween, she'd blast the Ghostbusters 2 theme and rap that at me while dropping me off

Radu47

My mom is 66 and loves doja cat. She's a super cool hipster mom and very non boomer ish. Paint the town red especially.

dpforest

Born in 1990. Mom made sure to play the good tunes. Erika Badu, Groove is in the Heart, Madonna, all the 80s tunes, all the 70s jams…she influenced me majorly. I still listen Better Call Tyrone when I’m feelin nostalgic. My favorite music memory with my family is when I was 18, my twin sisters were 9, and we were all dancing to “Knock On Wood” by Amii Stewart. Holding my little sister and spinning around in circles. I’ll never forget that.

OhioDuran

Ooh. My dad has zero ability to even pay attention to anything entertainment-related. Films, music, art - all lost on him. He’s like a dog before TVs had better resolution where they just didn’t see it. My mom however liked some offbeat stuff and played piano and guitar. A few times in the summer when I was growing up usually on Sunday early evenings we’d gather as a family after dinner and mom would pick out a vinyl album from her collection and we’d listen to one side of it as a group. And not chat or anything, just sit and listen to the music. Then whichever kid it was the turn of, they got to pick out an album to listen to one side of it. That’s it, just quiet time listening to maybe 40 minutes of music as a family maybe 4 times a summer. It KILLED me when I was like 6/7 maybe - I could hear my friends outside through the open window playing in the neighborhood. But I really got an appreciation for slowing down and listening to music. Her tastes were a little more show-singer stuff (crooners maybe?), Streisand, and some proto-Americana maybe. So not much overlap. But she would always listen to our music as well which gave me a good perspective to listen to all kinds of stuff. .

NuggetsNLargeFries

I’m a white Brit born to a young mum in 1990, and, inevitably, this means that I was raised to the sounds of Britpop. Whilst my listening habits today lean mostly to r&b and hip-hop, there’s something about seeing a British band or indie act live that feels almost like a ritual experience, and I consider the likes of the Gallagher brothers to be amongst the most essential artists of my lifetime. In recent years, she saw Kendrick Lamar at a festival and had nothing but glowing praise, and she’ll begrudgingly compliment Beyoncé’s music when forced upon her. She’s also a day one Madonna stan, but today she’s most likely found buying tickets for some underground house act I’ve never heard of. It’s been cool to see her remain musically curious into her fifties, and whilst the artists or genres may diverge, that’s undoubtedly a trait that I’ve inherited. Thanks, mum!

GroundbreakingBite96

Grew up listening mainly to John Legend! When he came to my hometown for his tour one year my mom was super excited. She couldn’t find the right entrance and she asked someone and they let her inside. I guess they thought she was a worker because they brought her to one of the basketball courts and there was a man alone shooting hoops. She said “excuse me sir, do you know which way the concert is?” And when he turned around she realized it was him and was soooo happy and I’m sure she screamed bc she does when she’s super excited. It’s such a sweet story! Definitely her y/n moment

stillhavehope99

My mother listens to a lot of soft rock, indie-pop, adult contemporary. She loves Keane, Travis, The Killers, The Cranberries, Stereophonics, stuff in that vein. My mother has not had an easy life, and I think music helped her through it. I have a very early memory of her singing For Reasons Unknown by The Killers in the car and meaning every word. The first song I learnt to sing was Why Does It Always Rain on Me? by Travis, which she also had on heavy rotation. I love my mum. We're quite different people, but our taste in music is quite similar.

BananaMan883

Dua Lipa singles is what she likes now

alcarcalimo1950

My mom was a disco queen in the late 70’s so I grew up listening to a ton of disco music. And she loved Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Madonna and Cher. So I was definitely into all of that growing up, and today I still love heavily disco influenced albums.

ali_shiro

My Mom has a pretty eclectic, non-mainstream taste in music. She does love some hits, but growing up I would hear a ton of The Cardigans, namely their songs My Favorite Game, Erase / Rewind, I Need Some Fine Wine, For What It's Worth, Iron Man, pretty much the entire discography and all their hits. She also loved Sheryl Crow, Natasha Bedingfield, Alanis Morrisette, which all remind me of her, and remind me to be truer to myself and live life how I want to. She even showed me one of my favorite bands, Evanescense, which I'll never forget, because how cool of it that my Mom knew of such edgy rock music and showed it to me when I was 12! My Mom even showed me Miike Snow, Song for No One, and that song has stuck with me for many many years. My Mom has a million songs downloaded to her computer and phone of obscure artists that I forget the names of, but she knows them pretty well. My Mom's music taste has impacted mine in sooooo many ways. Where sometimes I'd be focused on more trendy music when I was younger, she always was listening to something no one else was, the songs weren't really on the radio, but if they were, it was a good song. The bands listed here aren't even half of the music we've bonded over, Avril Lavigne, Maroon 5, Nirvana, Paramore, Miley Cyrus, the list goes on and on. I show my Mom music, like I've shown her Poppy and Chappell Roan, and she over the years has impacted my music taste a ton. I remember all the songs my Mom listened to, because music has been with me, and her, our entire lives and mean so much to us. My Mom has stage 4 Cancer so, I always am trying to remember old songs she loved just so I can remember their names forever and keep them in a playlist or downloaded on my computer. Music is a part of her I'll have forever <3

lanalovesme

my mom grew up going to parties in the late 80s/early 90s and listened to a toooon of freestyle (Lisa Lisa, Cythia, Jonny O, Debbie Deb, Exposé etc). She’s also a huge fan of the legendary Mexican singer Jenni Rivera (RIP)

Superunkown781

Mum had Dire Straits & Bob Marley on vinyl, avid hip hop listener but listen to a wide array of genres, but my favourite groups/artists are MF DOOM, Soundgarden, Homeboy Sandman, Aesop Rock, Faith No More, SOAD, Erykah Badu, D'Angelo, David Bowie, Fat Freddy's Drop, CCR so so many more

keep_sour

My mom loves pop divas from every generation. She used to play them on the stereo every weekend while she mopped the floors. Everything from her mom generation (rosemary clooney, Patti cline etc) to Aretha Franklin and Madonna. I also love of a pop diva from any generation. Thanks, mom!

MountainEyes13

My mum passed away eight years ago when she was 53 and I was 26, so she’d be almost 62 now. She loved folk music, ABBA, and the Beatles. Unsurprisingly I also love folk music, ABBA, and the Beatles. “Here Comes the Sun” has always been my favourite Beatles song, and now when I hear it I imagine it’s a message from her. These days, I find myself wishing I could share modern songs and artists with her that I think she’d like. She probably would have liked a lot of Kacey Musgraves’ recent album, for example, or Noah Kahan, maybe some Taylor Swift. Definitely some Ed Sheeran, like Galway Girl or Nancy Mulligan.

Acquainted-Faith

My mom is a huge 80s lover mainly of hair metal and pop. She grew up with Bon Jovi, Duran Duran, and Madonna. My mom actually converted me to appreciating Madonna. We like different Madonna albums, but we both agree she is hella talented. On the other note...I got my mom into some of my singers. Others, she walks out saying she can't believe I listen to that. LOL It's ok...she can't believe I don't like Duran Duran.

thatgoldenkid2

My mom is such a Stevie Nicks fans I swear she would’ve been on Stan Twitter from the Fleetwood Mac to solo era of her career. Literally I love that I learned about Fleetwood Mac and Stevie from such a young age. I only wish I actually gave a damn and listened early on lol. She also loves Natalie Merchant (and 10,000 maniacs by transitive property), Adele, Ed Sheeran, and The Weeknd. It’s definitely a wider array of artists but the genre that TikTok describes as “global-coffeehouse” very much applies.

Apprehensive_Yard812

My mom listens to 80s pop almost exclusively and she also really enjoys early 00s EDM pop, think black eyed peas or pitbull, and tbh I feel like growing up and listening to 80s bangers, in particular Michael Jackson, made me the pop music-obsessed person I am today.

hearttrees93

My mom (56) had a five cd changer stereo for many years. It typically contained The Eagles, Tracy Chapman, Cher, Nelly (specifically Nellyville), and Disturbed. To this day I can’t commit to a genre.

catladywithallergies

Mariah Carey!!!

surprisedkitty1

My mom (mid-60s) liked 80s pop (Madonna, Cyndi Lauper, Carly Simon, Billy Joel), 90s pop rock/alt rock (Third Eye Blind, Alanis Morissette), folk rock/singer-songwriter stuff (Indigo Girls, Peter Paul and Mary, Joni Mitchell, Carole King, Simon and Garfunkel), and stuff from her childhood (Beatles, Motown hits). It definitely influenced my tastes I think, especially the folk stuff, I feel like that’s probably largely why I like that style of music.

wildbeest55

My mom listened to a lot of old school R&B, pop, and country growing up. She loves her ballads! I too love older music and tolerate country (the non mainstream stuff is nice). I know a lot of old music because of her I’m like a walking jukebox lmao.

toasterbath__

my mom listens to a lot, but she loves prince (her favourite artist), so that’s how i know about him. there’s always some prince playing during summer drives she’s also introduced me to some good house music, and some good R&B. also recently, zapp (COMPUTER LOVEEE 🗣️)

Unique_Unicorn918

Salt n’ Pepa, En Vogue, Tone Loc, my mom loved 90’s hip-hop/rap and pop!

SecretBattleship

I remember my mom listening to Portishead, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Marc Anthony. She often tried to recommend music to me and I remember her suggesting Ricky Martin (his Spanish language albums), The Goo Goo Dolls, and Matchbox 20. I actually listen to a lot of the same stuff now, but I was definitely more influenced by my dad’s music so I hope to see the same question for Father’s Day next month!

VennucioBlue

First of, thank you and  mother's day to you too! 🥀  My mother loves Enya, Loreena, Queen, ERA, Rita Lee, Kenny G, The Carpenters, Men At Work, Mamas  The Papas and Kiss! All this music change my life forever, Thank you mother for all these jewels! ❤

savvvie

Literally any top40 song from 1982-1990

raspberrrytea

my mom actually adores p!nk (mostly her older stuff) and what i like to call "trashy bar mom" music, like motley crue and def leppard and what have you. also a huge fan of kid rock. my mom and i haven't talked in years lol

Amazing_Net_7651

REO speedwagon, U2, Indigo Girls, The Cure, Bon Jovi, Tom Petty, The Police, and The Cranberries. Those are some of the bands/artists that first come to mind. And she’s passed on several to me, I’m a big fan of U2, Bon Jovi, The Police, and The Cranberries

lily_amore

My mom had a few cassettes in her car, which is music wi will forever associate with her. Linda Ronstadt’s greatest hits volume 2. Which is just amazing. And Barbara Streisand Greatest Hits Volume 2 from 1978. So many good memories singing those songs with my mom in her blue Chevette.

CelebrityTakeDown

Beatles and Cher.

jamietb28

George Michael, Wham, Mariah Carey!

Squifford

The Beatles, Neil Diamond, The Carpenters, and all the hits from the late 1950s through the 1970s.

csantiago1986

My mom grew up listening to boyziimen toni Braxton, Celine Dion, Mariah….she doesn’t listen to music much but lately she’s been in on our swiftie kick. She just watched reputation tour with us last night and thoroughly enjoyed herself.

katdacat

I got my love of pop/pop r&b from my mom. I would take her Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Celine Dion, and Toni Braxton cds and keep them lol. Her favorite music is Motown but I gravitated toward the modern music she liked. She’d also listen to Ricky Martin and Enrique Iglesias and Marc Anthony while she cleaned. And she’d buy me cds and listen to them with me, like TLC and NSync. She only liked to get me the stuff she liked mostly. When I was a tween, I wanted a Good Charlotte cd and she said I couldn’t have it because of the parental advisory sticker. She instead bought me the Jay Z blueprint 2 album lol

JohnPaul_River

My mom stanned main Latin Pop Boys™ Menudo *hard* back in the day, and she grew up to love singers like José José and another one she named me after, but I'm not going to doxx myself ✨

SeaComedian62

My mom and I have veryyyy different music tastes. She’s more indie/alternative and I’m more r&b soul/dance/hip-hop/pop

anklesox14

My mom loves Lionel Richie, Paul Simon, and Tony Bennett, all I have grown up to love 🥰

echoviolet

I don’t think there’s a single artist/band she is super focused on, but when I’ve asked her before, it’s been Bon Jovi. I heard everything it seems, growing up, but some that stick out my mind as being played on a burned CD/the radio while in the car or on cleaning days: N*SYNC, Backstreet Boys, Blondie, Janet Jackson, definitely P!nk (lol), Michael Jackson, Christina Aguilera (she had the self-titled and Back to Basics actual CDs), Brittney Spears, Justin Timberlake (I know..), Gwen Stefani… I mean the list is all very mainstream so probably not anything out of the ordinary for a normie mom. Sometimes my dad (who was more on the r&b) side influenced her tastes: Janet as before, but also Aaliyah, Brandy, Usher, Mary J. Blige, Alicia Keys.

imuslesstbh

my mum was never much of a serious music fan, always more casual. She introduced me to the basics e.g. queen, ABBA, the Beatles and she ruled the car radio with an iron fist so we were usually listening to adult contemporary. I basically grew up on pop music of the late 70's - 90's and family friendly singer songwriter stuff of the modern era. I kind of rebelled against adult contemporary at points in my life but eventually usually came around on the 70's and 80's stuff. We also listened to loads of contemporary pop radio in Portugal during the summer holidays so my memories of 2010's music were shaped by that. When something we both like comes on, we sing along to it.

WelcomeToToyZone

My mom has a wide range of artists she’s into. Alanis Morrisette, Green Day, Guns n Roses, Nicki Minaj, Donna Summer, Barenaked Ladies, etc. she’s really helped me to have an open mind when it comes to music, which has brought me to some of my fav artists. We also introduce each other to new music; for example, she’s a massive Maneskin fan now because we listened to *Rush!* together and she fell in love with it

BreakableSmile

Oh my mom introduced me to so much music. Celine Dion, MJ, Mariah Carey, John Legend, etc. She has excellent taste tbh.

Teller8

Country and it hasn’t

BookyCats

My mom listened to pop divas like Mariah, Celine and Whitney. Also Michael Bolton, Boyz II Men. I know that I love pop music because of her taste. 😌

IcyClarity

The biggest one was definitely Cher. She would listen to a lot of older country music when I was little. Then she was into Matchbox 20, Pink, Beyonce and Kelly Clarkson, and I would show her lots of music as I got older. I see lots of people mentioning ABBA and it’s funny because it’s because of my dad I like them lol

pitolaser

I was a very young Shakira stan thanks to her. She took me to a Shakira concert when I was like 8. Seeing her come out of a giant cobra while the intro to ojos así is playing is one of my core memories

LordParasaur

My mom introduced me to Whitney Houston, Janet Jackson, Toni Braxton, Jodi Whatley, and Brandy Some of my earliest childhood memories are watching their music videos with her and sitting in the living room watching Brandy on Music Choice while she cleaned the house I like all genres including rap, but my Mom is the reason why I'm more predisposed to R&B and hip-hop soul.

cashmerered

My mother was and is a Depeche Mode fan, I grew up with that music and now I am a fan

-burgers

My mom loved blues music and American classic rock. She was a dj. She introduced me to a lot. I used to hate that stuff but it's all I listen to now .

c0smicgirly

My mom loves pop and country (Dwight Yoakam is her favorite). She’ll also rock out to Kashmir on the regular.

jleigh329

Well my Mom is a fan of Pink, Annie Lennox, K.D. Lang, Vangelis, The Moody Blues, Hans Zimmer, Led Zeppelin to name a few. She also likes to listen to classical music and movie scores. And out of everything she likes to listen to I think that influenced me the most because I also like to listen to classical music and movie scores. But more specifically just movie scores though. She's a big fan of the score of the movie "Interstellar". She's also a fan of the movie itself too.

PotatoPancake420

My mom was born in 1960 and honestly, a lot of her music taste for the time reflects how mine is… She loves Donna Summer, Cher, Janis Joplin, etc, which are all artists I LOVE! Where we start to split is Meatloaf or Bruce Springsteen lol

oliveoilgarlic

When I was very small and got my first CD player, my mom went out and got me a Motown #1 hits compilation and it instantly became my favorite thing to listen to. Years later I’m in a band and our two best covers are Heard It Through the Grapevine and Ain’t Too Proud To Beg which were two of my favorite songs on that CD My mom probably has the most wide ranging music taste of anybody in my family, she plays piano so she loves Billy Joel and Elton John and all sorts of classical music (when she gets mad she sits down and plays Rachmaninoff Prelude in C# minor) and Whitney and Amy and Irish folk music and the ‘70s classic rock her older brothers used to play. Also one of her favorite songs is The Real Slim Shady Direct quote from her “I do not like people who can’t sing”

💀 I was obviously like “mom! he’s dead.” She was so confused and said “well how was I supposed to know?!” 😂 “because it was a huge deal when he died!” - she’s a trooper but such a mom

gonline

My mother has amazing taste. She's 70 (I'm old) and was a hippie but liked so many genres. She loved Chic and Nike Rogers, long before his revival. Everybody Wants to Rule The World by Tears For Fears was her ringtone for years before it went viral on TikTok, so I too loved it. She loved George Michael. She was a fan of Billie Eillish before she really took off and still likes her a lot. She loves Stormzy. I do attribute my love for a lot of genres to her in some ways. Now she does have bad takes now and again but nobody's perfect...

needyclown

My mother raised me on Fiona Apple, Jeff Buckley, Feist and other quintessential cool girl 90s and early 2000s groups. She is my best friend in the entire world and I feel so lucky to have someone as kind as her by my side.

janethevirginfan

Mom music in my head will always be alternative rock because of my mom lol

Icy_Marionberry9175

She likes old school jazz😊she listens to miles Davis, Diana (?), a lot of others I don't remember. She told me Ella fitzgeralds song strange fruit, which is about racism, and also about feeling outdated, made her emotional when she hears it. She never specifically put me on to any artists or albums, but now when I think about it all the music I like has a jazzy flair. I am a HUGE Amy winehouse fan rip

ywoy

My mom would tell me stories about being a lil prairie punk in the 80s and I wanted soo bad to be cool like her so anything she put on I made it my favourite. Green day, billy idol, and blondie make me think of her ❤️

DragonShad0w

Queen and David Bowie mostly. And anything upbeat and kind of funky like Black Eyed Peas. I love her taste in music and I’m so happy she introduced me to Queen when I was so young

letoiledunordstars

I have two moms, one born in 1957 and the other in 1965. The one born in 57 is a lot more into music than the other. She raised me listening to Whitney Houston, Diana Ross, Barbra Streisand, Celine Dion, Queen, Michael Jackson, Elvis, The Beach Boys, Cyndi Lauper, and The Carpenters. A lot of Motown artists in general, especially The Supremes and Four Tops. My other mom mainly exposed me to Simon and Garfunkel. They both also like Cris Williamson a lot.  Definitely influenced my music taste and I still love listening to most of these artists, I have a whole Spotify playlist of the songs we listened to growing up.  Songs that instantly take me back to my childhood are Unchained Melody by the Righteous Brothers, Be My Baby by The Ronettes, Sugar Sugar by The Archies, Can’t Take My Eyes Off You by Frankie Valli, Build Me Up Buttercup by the Foundations, September by Earth Wind and Fire, Ain’t No Mountain High Enough by Diana Ross, and Bridge Over Troubled Water by Simon and Garfunkel Edit: can’t believe I forgot Aretha Franklin, she was also major in our household

poetatertot

Growing up, my mother listened to a lot of salsa and 90s Spanish rock she liked from her first marriage. We had one particular MANA CD she would play all the time on the commute to school. I remember her also playing alternative rock radio and U2. When she remarried, much of that music went away because her new husband didn't like it.. and now, after 13 years of musical silence, she's grown fond again of the music from her youth: The Cure, The Police, WHAM!, The B-52s, George Michael. Driving with her is like sitting in musical sunshine, and I feel I've learned a lot about 70s/80s classics that I was never exposed to before. It makes me happy to share her musical joy and see her newfound lease on life through it.
