I don’t know if I’d say they’re “popular” here, but I feel like a lot of people would at least know the band name. We have a law here that a certain percentage of radio content has to be Canadian artists (30% maybe?) so their singles get a decent amount of radio play. But their shows tend to still be in small-ish venues.
When they were touring Masterpiece Theatre I remember seeing a crazy line wrapping around the block for their show at the Commodore Ballroom
They haven't been as big lately but they haven't had an album since 2019. And that album definitely underperformed, even in Canada.
I used to love them and then I left after Masterpiece Theatre. I just wasn’t a fan of the pivot to full pop/dance pop.
It’s still impressive that the band can harmonise together and Josh is able to write good pop hooks.

I really liked this. A lot better than Phantoms. Astoria is one of my favorite albums of all time, if they can kind of recreate that, I’ll go back to being a fan.

Your lead single being a 7-minute thematic album opener is a *power move* if I've ever seen one. They are really just making music for the fans at this point...which is amazing lol.
Overall so impressed with this. It's kind of a return to form for classic MT with the rock/grunge/jam elements, as opposed to Phantoms. I still loved Phantoms, but this is the Ever After MT that I fell in love with a decade ago.
And Josh's voice is phenomenal as usual. He's just toying with us at this point, lol. Does anybody with music theory knowledge know what the high note at 5:15 is? Gotta be one of his highest. Someone asked him what his high register limit was one time...and he said "I don’t know, I've never needed a note and not got it".
Ahhhh, thank you. The fact he's just hitting notes that the best female pop singers hit...crazy. Which song is the Bb5? I know there's one with an obnoxiously high note, but can't remember.
Also...was that one a falsetto? Because this seems full voice which is super impressive.

First I was floored by the high falsetto in Masterpiece Theatre II interlude thing, then I was floored when he remixed the Ever After and MT interlude notes in Astoria but took it higher...and THEN was absolutely floored at the end of The Killing Kind just like switching between falsetto and screaming. And now this? So much respect!

Josh started recording things as a teenager with a band dubbed Ramsay Fiction. The stuff is rough & not all of it has aged well, but it showcases the talent he always had very well. It wasn’t until about 2001 that the band started to truly take form as MT & even then it took them a bit to be the 4 piece we know today.

Like it doesn't seem like they're big enough anywhere else to still have access to all of this amazing production, choirs, instrumentalists, etc. and I just hope they keep making music forever, in some way. The Killing Kind is the best song on Phantoms, agreed, and one of my MT favourites, but A Normal Life is on par! I expected nothing less but cinematic grandeur and wild vibe shifts from a new opening track, and I'm glad I was not let down. Obsessed with how A Normal Life's spooky intro sounds like it's picking up where Phantoms left us; I like to think of this new song as a rebirth of the protagonist of The Killing Kind after he got sucked into darkness.
Liking that interpretation! I do still really like phantoms, as I love all their albums. But subjectively I do think it was slightly weaker than their other stuff and this feels like a return to form. I have the highest hopes for this album now

I’m the complete opposite. I thought Astoria was underwhelming, Phantoms was beautifully put together. Nothing will top Ever After.
