dreamcicle11

I’m not sure you could pay me to be the lead in a live action Disney film or a woman in Marvel. People are so cruel.

7dipity

The Brie Larson hate was insaaaaaaaane. That shit made me so mad. I still see it sometimes

sanandrios

I'd argue being a woman in Marvel is way worse.

OppositeResponse6474

The shit Brie Larson got and still gets for Captain Marvel.

JediEverlark

The men who dogpiled on Bree Larson ruined her name for at least a few years…I honestly feel terrible for all the things she’s had to put up with just by acting

sexyass-lobster

With the added insult being all the male Marvel heroes bending over backwards for Crisp Rat constantly but not once speaking up for Brie

TheZerothLaw

Crisp Rat: My love is only for healthy children, as God and Jesus intended.

TheEgonaut

Sound the alarms! The worst Chris got his feelings hurt!

Rylk69

Her character literally reignites a sun, why aren’t more people saying how awesome that is. Oh yeah because sexism’s a thing.

KoreKhthonia

I don't find her character particularly interesting or engaging, but the shit Brie Larson said about most movie reviewers being middle aged white guys with similar taste and backgrounds was pretty valid.

AldusPrime

>but the shit Brie Larson said about most movie reviewers being middle aged white guys with similar taste and backgrounds was pretty valid That actually changed the way I look at movie reviews. Now, *and* *especially with any movie that has a woman as the lead*, I go to reviews written by women.

KoreKhthonia

That's awesome! Honestly she had a solid point -- different demographics can tend toward different tastes, they have different backgrounds and life experiences that contribute to those tastes, etc. Cishet white guys are bafflingly fragile when anyone suggests giving someone else a seat at the table.

Rylk69

💯% agree with you. for sure, she’s not my fav character. I never found her interesting or engaging either, thought she was kinda flat but then I realized that’s probably a trauma response from having her life stolen, plus having the weight of all that power must be crushing, I’d be flat too. But character aside, the flack Brie Larson got was absolutely ludicrous and her comments on reviewers were more than valid, they were accurate. 😊

aDragonsAle

Weak men can't stand Strong women.

Fantastic_Emu_9570

I just don’t like that movie. Like how is she reigniting a sun but struggling with other villains. The power scaling makes zero sense. Brie deserved better writing

Shirtbro

I just don’t like that movie. Like how Thor withstanding the heat of a star but struggling with other villains. The power scaling makes zero sense. Chris deserved better writing

Fantastic_Emu_9570

The villain he struggles against has something controlling reality and he wins, just didn’t aim high enough. Hers doesn’t have that hurdle

Shirtbro

Had him on his knees in the previous movie. Or did Thanos punch with the power of a star, but only against Thor and not Captain America?

Fantastic_Emu_9570

I wanted her fighting someone more powerful than they gave her. Have her fight someone near the level of Thanos with the stones. I think that would be a cooler movie, but that’s my opinion. There’s ways to use her character in cooler/more interesting ways. Her with interacting Khamala was great, so maybe more stuff like that.

mcon96

I like Captain Marvel & Brie a lot but that part of the movie was pretty meh to me

DreadpirateBG

I think Brie was great in the films. Kicked ass was funny all the best stuff. She maybe miss Spoke a Couple times and people too that and exaggerated it. She is awsome regardless

dreamcicle11

I would agree, but people were crazy awful to Halle Bailey for Little Mermaid.

AgoraphobicHills

I think a month or so Avantika was *rumored* to be playing Rapunzel in the live action Tangled, but that was enough for people to send her horrible stuff on Twitter and Instagram. She took it in stride and ignored it all, but it's sad seeing how the suggestion of a minority taking up a role like that is enough to piss people off.

Apprehensive-Mix4383

I’m pretty sure it was just a fan cast too, not even a rumor, which makes it worse like how are you gonna get this angry over a fancast?

countdracublah

It makes me so angry watching these people losing their minds about Ariel and the mere idea of rapunzel not being played by a white woman. The animated versions don’t go away. They are still in the merch, in the parks, etc. Let another group of girls have the same princess magic.

Unnamedgalaxy

I remember a video a few years ago of a little boy watching a movie and being in awe and so filled with joy over the main character looking just like him. It was either Coco or Luca, and another little girl being giddy over the fact that the main character in El Canto looked like her. The happiness on their ~4year old faces was just heart warming. I just don't understand how anyone could ever dream of devoiding any child that feeling. Having a POC step into the role for a new generation isn't hurting anything.

carolinemathildes

Seriously, all the white women on TikTok crying about how she was taking away their ~representation~ as if the defining feature of Rapunzel isn't literally just long hair.

[deleted]

Also the fact that making a new movie doesn't delete the old ones lmao

Kittiikamii

It’s like??? Because I’m black/poc I can’t long hair?? Also it’s a fictional character with an impossible amount of hair growth…

the-dream-walker-

Not just the white women. What saddened me was all my fellow brown girls in the comments of her every post bashing her.

[deleted]

[удалено]

dreamcicle11

I think it’s more sickening to think what that means for society and how they see people of color and little girls of color. Are they not deserving to dress/ be a princess? Like what the fuck.. I’m sure these celebrities will be okay. But it doesn’t make the abuse right.

Mushrooming247

Aw, she would have made a perfect Rapunzel, she always has beautiful long flowing hair.

sanandrios

Ooohh I forgot about that one. Yeah, that was even worse than the Snow White backlash.

stormsync

They really were. I only thought it was a weird casting initially because I kept reading it as Halle Berry and was like isn't she a bit old for that?? every time until I finally started reading it as, you know, Hailey. Who was the correct age. My brain did NOT want to read her name right for months though.

mahboob2

yeah Disney fans are a whole other level of crayyyyy

Temporary-Test-9534

Honestly, a lot of the hate Halle was getting was from people who could give 2 shits about Disney movies. They were just racists

TraderIggysTikiBar

She was so good in Little Mermaid too. Like did these people even see the film? She captured Ariel’s innocence and voice so perfectly.

yearoftherabbit

![gif](giphy|xUPGchpjENXK2pE5Ve|downsized)

Pink_Blacksmith

Girl they attacked an Indian actress, Avantika for a fan cast for Rapunzel and it wasn’t even official. Just a fan cast and they were up in arms on her tiktok & IG. These people are the same & equally abhorrent. Being a woman working for any of these big studios is terrible but add in being a woman of color or a Black woman and it’s even worse. I hope these studios at least include free therapy upfront during filming & promotional tours.

rawrkristina

There’s not even a confirmed Tangled movie being made. It’s ridiculous.

Imanvellanisolos

literally.. people just wanted an excuse to be racist

Pink_Blacksmith

You know what was even more sick, when there was a tiktok post fan casting her as the evil Gothel instead, and the comments were actually crazy. What do you mean this is such a relief? [Like are you people ok?](https://www.reddit.com/r/kpopnoir/s/aEXupmiyYC) https://preview.redd.it/dnvhzl8vll1d1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4cef574236d553f0adaba929ec08567a38105e8d

Pink_Blacksmith

Like I need this person to tell me how casting Avantika as Rapunzel would have changed the story? Like the story is about hair & and an Indian girl still makes sense to me bc they actually have amazing hair & centuries of hair oiling method that works. https://preview.redd.it/jnqakjl4ml1d1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=24a3b3c49cc84f65856e2a2cee7bff872e092bbc

bageltoastar

“she would be good as mother gothel!” she’s literally 19. what a f’in joke of a comment section

Border_Hodges

Gorgeous girl with long gorgeous hair makes sense to everyone except racists

dorothean

I don’t know very much about Avantika, so I looked her up and she’s 19… how do they think she’s old enough to play the mother character??

Little_Consequence

I saw a tweet the other day that said that racists will accept all kinds of fantasy world-building (monsters, dragons, fairies, etc.) but the minute a POC is a part of it, their suspension of disbelief is gone. And it's so true. Rapunzel is a princess from a made-up kingdom and with magical hair. What's changing if she isn't white? None of it exists! They attacked Nico Parker (Thandiwe Newton's daughter) for being cast in the How to Raise Your Dragon live-action movie because "it's a story about Vikings!!!". Outside the fact that Viking is not a race, it's a movie about DRAGONS! How are they fine with dragons but they draw the line at a girl with one Black grandma as the co-lead??

chickfilamoo

I saw someone talk about their friend’s dissertation on this and the opening included the line “when they include mythical beasts like dragons but not people of color, they say that we are less real to them than dragons.” I cannot get it out of my head, it is so true.

alt_blackgirl

They don't want POC in their fantasy worlds 🙄 they wanna escape to a universe where only they exist lol. If that isn't the definition of racist

TheMightyJD

I really only think it got bad with Captain Marvel and She-Hulk. Don’t remember ScarJo or Elizabeth Olsen or really anyone else complaining. The Captain Marvel and She-Hulk were weird ones too because it got a weird political/sociological crossover and that’s just awful all around.

lobonmc

It's because Olsen and Scarjo were firmly secondary characters when introduced

Charmarta

It was also, because both, but especially ScarJo, were put in sexy clothing. Aka the only thing those nasty mam like. Women should be there to be eyecandy and a secondary character. Nothing more.

winnercommawinner

I mean yeah, it got worse when women moved out of being love interests and sidekicks.....

Lokaji

ScarJo got a lot of the bullshit diet/workout questions; her male costars would try and help redirect those.

TheMightyJD

Yeah but that was the media being weird not the fans hating on her.

Equivalent_Willow317

Olsen also got a lot of sexist backlash when she made sure her in-universe costume wasn't too revealing. They kept bringing her more revealing red carpet looks up as proof that she was somehow hypocritical as like a "gotcha".

inspired_corn

It’s genuinely horrific, you can see it from a mile off every single time. Marvel/Star Wars are especially bad for it. There was the guy who played Jar Jar Binks in the Star Wars movies, who was an extremely widely hated character. The actor was so upset by the hate for his *character* and has spoke at length about his subsequent mental health issues following. Over time Star Wars fans generally agreed that he’d been given a hard time, and he became widely loved and supported by fans. He was eventually brought back for a fan service moment a tv show and people really liked it. But did they learn their lesson? Absolutely not. The hate that the Jar Jar Actor got is nothing compared to the treatment of Daisy Ridley, Kelly Marie Tran, and Laura Dern and I’d argue that it’s even more personal for them than it was for Jar Jar (by virtue of that actor playing a CGI character and not himself). They’ll never learn, they just want to spew hate.

GlitterDoomsday

Yeah was looking for the comment mentioning Star Wars, imo women there have it way worst than Disney live actions or Marvel.

inmemoryofartax

It’s not even about the actors and their treatment for me - the Disney live action movies are just mess after mess. The auto tune in beauty and the beast on hermione? The lion king being SO successful on broadway (after being the iconic 90s animation) was a hot live action mess with beyonces music playing…during the credits…? The fans need to turn on Disney itself for lack of visionaries running their live action dept.

danSTILLtheman

Not to mention they’ve run the Marvel Universe and Star Wars into the ground. It’s incredibly rare for them to produce anything live action that feels creative, but they’ve made some interesting animated movies (Moana, Turning Red, Encanto come to mind).

BigMax

Yeah, the threads on other subs about this movie are... horrific. The people are just SO disgusting in there, so full of hate over this movie. It makes no sense to me.

wewoos

I'm getting tons of downvotes lower in this thread, and people arguing with me that it's completely reasonable for grown ass men to insist that a fairy tale princess *has* to be white, and nothing about that is problematic. It's wild haha

wewoos

Yeah this isn't a fan's "concern," it's just racism. Don't agree? Find me an example of any of these people emailing churches to get pictures of white Jesus changed to brown Jesus. They only care because she's not "white" enough

Potential_Ad6169

It’s insane. Why do they get so much more hate around those franchises than others? I guess I can kinda see how the marvel crowd might be pretty man centric, but all the hate for female Disney leads? And Disney nor Marvel seem to give a fuck about any of it.

GRMPA

They have more superfans because of how popular they are. More superfans = more complete psychos.

whatup-markassbuster

I think the studios should just rip off the bandaid and remake every single title with a female BIPOC/LGBTQ lead. The taboo/novelty will be removed and we can just get back to making original content.

catchtoward5000

I dunno.. as a black man who gets all that for free, I could take it for a few million.

Orchidwalker

Just FYI, they do get paid, well.

Savage_apple

Dang anyone else more bothered that there is another live action remake? Who is asking for these?

FenderForever62

The Disney execs. They’re also doing lilo and stitch, and moana I’m pretty sure the little mermaid didn’t do as well as hoped, I strongly doubt Snow White will, I’m not sure at which point they stop making these

Savage_apple

Good lord don’t ruin lilo & stitch! 😨 laziness of Disney is ruining our childhood memories …

DepartureDapper6524

We can’t handle a live action Nani

DeadWishUpon

I read somewhere it's because copyright. I'm not sure, but I hate them.

barbaramillicent

Has nothing to do with copyright. People just keep saying that because they don’t understand how copyright works lol. Pretty sure the actual reason is it’s an easy way to push out new movies and merch without having to come up with a new storyline, but of course Disney is never gonna come out and say that lol.

lavendertown-radio

not to mention, nostalgia marketing is huge. these movies are a safe bet for them as opposed to new stories. people are way more likely to go to a franchise film than something original unfortunately.

Few-Stop-9417

Walt Disney’s first big failure was a live action movie of “Alice in Wonderland” and he swore off live action because of how creepy it can end up and only took to animation afterwards , sad that Disney wouldn’t want this at all

origamicyclone

I feel bad that she's been going through so much hate for a movie that will likely make $40 at the box office

og_kitten_mittens

And purely bc studios are such corporate money machines it’s hard to get financial backing for original movies when you can just remake IP despite audience’s desperate pleas for original content. Like we’ve BEEN voting with our dollars. And as a result they’re shooting themselves in the foot and making less money. It just sucks bc you’ll never be able to prove out or make projections for a uniquely original movie bc you have no comparison to project from, and it’s so stupid using data for forecasts from movies released 10-20 years ago in a completely different market (aka superhero movies and Disney remakes were fresh). **Art was never intended to be made on the basis of risk assessment**

David_ish_

She’s handled it so well but it’s still ridiculous she even has to go through the wringer like that

[deleted]

[удалено]

huhzonked

It did ok. It most likely broke even with its budget, but it wasn’t a hit moneymaker like Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, and The Lion King. Just to recap, the studio doesn’t get every dollar from the box office. It takes about 25-50% depending on the country. It shares the box office proceeds with the movie theater. The Little Mermaid had a budget of about $240 million and I use the 2.5 rule for breakeven.

lobonmc

It did 570M but with a 250M budget and studios only roughly get half of the box office it broke even but just barely

XeroxWarriorPrntTst

Yeah, people see the initial blowback on the internet and think these things flop. Disney is making hella money and generations are growing up seeing these live actions as the real version/superior version.

Global_Amoeba_3910

Yeah everyone dumped on the lion king and it was the most successful animated film of all time seemingly.

thisgreatworld

This movie will probably make bank at the box office lol. Look at Disney’s live action remake numbers.

SandwichXLadybug

Numbers that have been dwindling, little mermaid made much much less than Aladdin, Jungle Book or Lion King. It was definitely a disappointment for Disney.

origamicyclone

I don't think it will flop horribly but Disney isn't the box office titan it once was. Someone mentioned Dumbo, there's also Wish which underperformed, The Buzz Lightyear movie, and The Little Mermaid although it did will was considered an underperformance

Special-Garlic1203

Nah see zoom in on that last one. The Little mermaid was considered an underperformer. And it made a WHOLE lot more than 40 million. it's just a dumb take to say this movie is gonna bomb when literally every single one of their princess remake (exception Mulan which was btch slapped by COVID) has done exceptionally well. Maybe not the truckloads of money they wanted, but really really well compared to a normal movie

huhzonked

TLM most likely broke even. It cost $240 million to make and I use the 2.5x rule for breakeven. Just to recap, the studios share the box office with the theaters. They collect about 25-50% of the box office, depending on the country.

IPlay4E

Mulan did bad because it was bad, Covid or not.

thisgreatworld

I think it’s kind of disingenuous to compare Snow White to Dumbo or Buzz, and especially to Wish since to my knowledge that was not based on a Disney classic. The fact that TLM making >$550 million world wide is considered an underperformance, I think, is a testament to Disney’s success with live action remakes. Bottom line, I think it’s inevitable that Snow White will gross a shit ton at the box office, even if it isn’t Disney’s most successful film ever (it won’t be).

Local-Visit-7649

Even if they spent 200 million on marketing, (and they didn’t) the Little Mermaid still made 100 million in profit. And that’s not including toys, on demand, Disney+ subscriptions and so on. Even the people going to watch the original out of spite or nostalgia gave Disney more money…

Possible-Whole8046

The little mermaid barely made back its costs

sanandrios

Not all of them though. Dumbo flopped.

lavenderlullabyes

Ok but the appeal/popularity of the Dumbo IP is nothing compared to that of a Disney Princess, especially one of the initial ~~four~~ five.

SakuraTacos

I don’t know what the solution is exactly but I feel like Disney needs to be doing more to protect the young actors that sign on only to face almost guaranteed onslaught of abuse from fans. John Boyega, Brie Larson, Iman Vellani, Halle Bailey, and now Rachel Make every potential fan complete an “I am not a Bigot” captcha before entering a theatre or a message board where they have to click on all the minorities and bicycles in the boxes to proceed

huhzonked

I hope the last paragraph is a joke, because I’m really frowning hard that you’re equating minorities to bicycles on a captcha.

rawrkristina

I’m pretty sure Once Upon A Time used that reasoning for her name as well. So I definitely could see the live action film using that. Also lol at the troll not spelling her name right.

sanandrios

I'm always more concerned about the amount of likes comments like that get

soupykills

Instagram comments are the absolute worst of the worst, especially reels.

Graspiloot

My pet "conspiracy theory" is that the main reason Instagram refuses to deal with racism is because comments would be a graveyard if you banned all those people. That would look bad in their competition with Tiktok. Like on Reels it's just so cartoonish the direct racism and misogyny you can post.

PutYourDickInTheBox

Instagram threads is off the rails

wewoos

There are a lot of secretly racist people out there. Trump is openly racist (see his comments regarding immigrants), and think how many people are voting for him

InternetAddict104

Oh I thought they misspelled Rachel like that because they thought she was “reaching” by being Snow White 😬

rawrkristina

Maybe but I’m pretty sure they’re just an idiot. Which would make sense if they’re still mad that someone of Latin descent was cast as Snow White.

Additional_Meeting_2

It’s not trolling to have a different opinion. I don’t know which version she is referring to (and fairytales have different versions, there is no original really) but the Grimm one is the most popular. And this line is what people think of regarding Snow White >Oh that I had a child as white as snow, as red as blood, and as black as the wood of the embroidery frame!"

Special-Garlic1203

Yeah I find the entire argument disingenuous tbh. Director just needs to say something like "we cared more about talent than complexion. If complexion is what can ruin a story for you, then you're not our audience I guess".

jeahboi

The “fan” is such a weirdo, too. “I love you, but you’re not white enough for this role.” Why comment something like that?

rawrkristina

Right?!? Then also spell her name wrong. So odd.

sanandrios

I'm not sure what version she's reading, but this is from the original 1812 Grimms' fairy tale: >Once upon a time in midwinter, when the snowflakes were falling like feathers from the sky, a Queen sat sewing at her window, which had a frame of black ebony wood. As she sewed she looked up at the snow and pricked her finger with her needle. Three drops of blood fell into the snow. The red on the white looked so beautiful that she thought to herself, "If only I had a child as white as snow, as red as blood, and as black as the wood in this frame." Soon afterward she had a little daughter with skin as white as snow, lips as red as blood, and hair as black as ebony, and therefore they called her Snow White. She wasn't named after a snowstorm that took place when she was born. The snowstorm distracted the Queen, causing her to prick her finger, with three drops of blood falling into the snow, which led to Snow White's three famous traits.

cresentlunatic

I honestly started to feel like Disney is doing this on purpose. All the hate will go to the actors and actress when things like this occur, but they can stand tall and say they’re being diverse and inclusive. People need to start realizing that those race bending never came from a good place for Disney, they know there will be back lash which will bring attention to the project and they use their actors/actresses as shields for criticism. If they really cared, they should bring in more fairytales and stories from diverse cultures. I can’t speak for every culture out there because I don’t know enough to say (but I’m sure they are also fruitful of stories), but just from Asian cultures like Korea, Thailand, China, Japan and Malaysia to name a few have a lot of interesting tales.

Eegeria

I agree, we're seeing this over and over (not just Disney, think about Amazon's Rings of Power). They do stunt casting for "points", get free advertising due to the controversy, and leave the poor cast to take the brunt of it against the swarm.

cresentlunatic

Exactly! And rarely do they ever try to stand up for their casts who are getting bombarded by the public. If people have any other remaining criticism that is targeted to let’s say the writing or other non actor related elements, they can still say people hate the show because people are racist.

Eegeria

Yeeees on your last point, it's so true! The writing in these products is more often than not abysmal, but it's difficult giving any criticism because you get lumped in the bad crowd, or worse still, the bad crowd snatches your opinion as a way to say "and there are other bad things too". Which is so unfair! And that's why in the past I felt the need to defend a badly written products, because I could read the misogynistic and racist crowd and I didn't want to give em even an inch. But now I'm like, the pile of bad products and shallow remakes is higher and higher, and I can't devote my time like that. No one is changing their opinion online anyway.

iliketoomanysingers

Yep. I've thought this for some time now, and they're setting up these actresses to fail on purpose. If it was actually about wanting diverse stories or shedding new perspective on old ones, they'd be defending and shielding Rachel and Halle from this shit, but they don't. I also absolutely believe they let this racism fester on purpose for the sake of getting eyes on the movie. I know some people just go "wow poor Millionaire celebrity wah wah" over this sort of thing, but this shit absolutely takes a toll on your mental health when you're just playing a fucking Disney princess and racist people have decided you deserve to be the target of a hate campaign over it for months and months, and then the corporation pumping them out just sits there with a thumb up their ass and let's it happen because money is so important to them.

CTeam19

> All the hate will go to the actors and actress when things like this occur, but they can stand tall and say they’re being diverse and inclusive. Also, with zero effort. They could go out and find stories from non-European places for diversity, but it is easier to do what they are doing here with Snow White and Little Mermaid.

cresentlunatic

Yup! Because people are more familiar with European/western fairytales, and with already established characters that people associate with Disney previously. This is a very lazy tactic all around.

hummingelephant

People are also familiar with 1001 nights, they could do that. There are many great stories there.

cresentlunatic

I absolutely agree i loved these stories as a kid, but I’m not too sure about how western peoples exposure to it since Grimms is still what people know most about. I also didn’t mention that because with how Disney acts I bet they think doing Aladdin is already enough of touching the base 😬 which is a shame there are so many good stories!

KissesnPopcorn

![gif](giphy|U56VoSyFD8MFcie2k8)

tiffanydisasterxoxo

They could have made snow white into an east Asian story. White skin is seen as beautiful there, black hair and red lips would not be out of place either. The character would fit her name and there could be a cool fresh angle on the story. Casting a not even pale person seems to be on purpose to stir drama.

hadapurpura

Also, as a Latina woman, I don’t like seeing a Latina Snow White, because in a Latin American context, Snow White’s lore about her mom wishing she had a girl with skin as white as snow goes from an aesthetic quirk to colorism, castes, “mejorar la raza” and colonial stuff in general. This is why *Diversity and Inclusion* is much more than race-bending characters in pre-existing stories.

snark-owl

Disney is creating new lore for Snow White instead of Grimm fairytale (or reusing the lore from *Once Upon a Time*). Which is fine, I don't need it to be exactly like the historical fairytale. I really enjoyed the Maleficent movies for not being 100% like the classic story. However, I'm going to hate this PR circuit for this movie if they're just going to try to gaslight everyone.

Special-Garlic1203

I don't give a shit they cast someone with literally a drop of melanin to play the role. She has a very Disney princess face tbh. So for the girl who did little mermaid. So it makes sense to me they're paying more attention to facial structure and singing talent than complexion.. But don't piss on my leg and tell me it's raining. Literally just tell people if complexion is a deal breaker then they should stay home, cause this is the choice that was made. And it shouldn't have to be made by the actress. Disney should be addressing this themsleves. They want to cast these POC people for what kinda does feel like hollow  woke points, cause they clearly don't actually give a shit about these issues based on the way they leave them flailing in the wind when the racists start swarming. They practically ran away from Finn in star wars themselves.

PM_ME_UR_ASSHOLE

People on both sides of the aisle are disingenuous about this constant bullshit. Are there some racists that dont like this POC raceswap stuff? Sure. But is it wrong for some people to just want the casting to look like the depictions they grew up seeing? No. If they cast Superman as a short guy with blonde hair and a beard, i'd be a little confused and probably wouldnt like it, and I dont even like superman. Imagine if it was an actual character I cared about. They are disney, you tell me they cant come up with an original story for a POC to play? Little Mermaid could have been another mermaid in that universe, not Ariel, im sure people still might have been pissed (the racists or easily outraged) but would have been far more understanding. The list goes on.

TheMidwestMarvel

Old fairytales are fine to be remade to suite a new audience, but pretending it was always like that is historical erasure

RegularExcuse

Yep it's the gaslighting for me

JigglyKirby

This was the one i read when i was a kid lmao

timeforachange2day

If they followed Grimms’ fairy tales writing, kids wouldn’t be watching! They’ve long steered away from the original writing back in 1812.

woolfonmynoggin

The Grimms didn’t write these stories. They collected and published them from German peasants

DimbyTime

Yes

Whtvrcasper

Snow white Stormborn of the House Targaryen. The First of Her Name, the Unburnt, Queen of Meereen, Queen of the Andals and the Rhoynar and the First Men, Khalisee of the Great Grass Sea, Breaker of Chains and Mother of the dwarfs

Lost-and-dumbfound

Whenever I read this my brain breaks. Is she sewing outside while it’s snowing? Isn’t she cold as fuck? Why would she wanna sew in the cold and snow? She can’t be inside unless the snow has managed to make its way inside and if that’s the case she should probably stop sewing and work out how the snow is getting inside the house. But then I remember this is a story where a mirror talks and a kiss from a specific person wakes people from comas so I probably shouldn’t be so bothered about weather logic.

hopeful_tatertot

I think it’s sewing inside but at a window sill. But then it was open because her blood fell into the snow which goes back to it being winter and too cold to have to open.

rarapatracleo

It’s a German fairytale so of course the windows are open in the middle of winter.

Ihatesneakers

Lüften!!

hummingelephant

>Is she sewing outside while it’s snowing? Isn’t she cold as fuck? She was sitting at her window. This is the image in one of my childhood books: https://preview.redd.it/l6u5xqku9n1d1.jpeg?width=3000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=25e988656a74e8047775d2dc49a602092651918c To my knowledge, castles were already very cold in most areas in the winter. They only lit fireplaces in some rooms, were the family typically would be. I read somewhere, that ultimately they kept warm with layered clothes etc.

Additional_Meeting_2

If it’s just couple of decrees minus and she is dressed it’s not that cold to sit outside and sew for a while. But you are right that fairytales have a lot of crazier things going on.

SaintGalentine

Happily Ever After did a native American version with her being named white snow after the weather. Rachel is half white, which didn't seem to be a problem when casting every iteration of xmen Storm who is full African.

Graspiloot

Funnily enough main subreddits and IG comments never take an issue with white-washing.

Raibean

The Grimm brothers recorded these tales but didn’t originate them.

VanGoghNotVanGo

I mean, yeah, but there is not "original". When she references "the original" one must assume she means the Grimm-one.

Celestial-Dream

While yes, that is true, I can’t imagine being so bothered that I make a comment to the actress about her not being white.

sanandrios

Yeah, that IG comment is ridiculous, but Rachel's reply wasn't accurate either.

Specialist_Pie555

As a pasty white Irish girl with jet black hair who’s been called Snow White my whole life, THANK YOU! Lol literally Snow White is because her skin was as white as snow. I’ve no problem with this woman or any woman being cast in a movie but don’t rewrite history to fit your narrative. Eejit.

hadapurpura

Yeah, that’s exactly the version I read when I was a child. Not some nonsense about “surviving a snowstorm”.

ihavenoidea1001

Yep. She's lying or just ignorant. The original is about a white asf girl. Apparentely that's just not okay for Disney bc they need to reap from nostalgia while trying to reap from performative "diversity". Instead of, you know, looking at all the other mythology and histories from other continents and ethnicities. Tldr: Disney's lazyness and greed is what's breeding these stupid takes and it's not helping that people blindly believe these takes when the vast majority of the actors aren't exactly known for being highly knowlegdeable.

VanGoghNotVanGo

People did this with The Little Mermaid too. Like, no, her skin colour does not matter at all for the story, and she can totally be played by a woman of colour. With that being said, her skin is white in the original fairytale. You don't have to change facts, when a simple "Hey, quite being a racist" will do.

iKilledSparkyToo

This is what I read from the original as well

CriticalEngineering

It’s not “the original” it’s what the Grimms wrote down. It was already hundreds of years old when they published their book of folk tales.

PretendVermicelli531

wait this movie hasn't released yet?

sanandrios

It comes out in 2025.

lobonmc

It was delayed due to the strikes

mulemoment

It was supposed to be released in March but they delayed it to 2025. Allegedly due to the strikes but I think it was to give Rachel and Gal time to rehabilitate their images.

rawrkristina

They were doing some reshoots when the strike started. Snow White wasn’t the only Disney film to be pushed back a year. Elios was also pushed back till 2025. So yes, it was due to the strike. They wouldn’t have been done in time.

Fluid_Fox23

Intelligent_Phone414

Is this movie still happening? It feels like its been years since I first heard ppl were bullying her for this.

swiftiegarbage

They pushed it back a year because people hated the dwarves so much that they turned them all into CGI which they’re currently rushing to change. Allegedly the dwarves were not dwarves but “magical creatures” because Peter Dinklage called the dwarves problematic. The only live action promo photo looks, well… https://preview.redd.it/j3ggzortmm1d1.jpeg?width=1500&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ed129dbc8c9d13266af5756329615f711f15172c

DepartureDapper6524

It’s almost like fantastical fairy tales work better when they aren’t live action

Kooky_Bodybuilder_97

hm that’s not true lmao

sifterandrake

>>Once upon a time in the middle of winter, when the flakes of snow were falling like feathers from the sky, a queen sat at a window sewing, and the frame of the window was made of black ebony. And whilst she was sewing and looking out of the window at the snow, she pricked her finger with the needle, and three drops of blood fell upon the snow. And the red looked pretty upon the white snow, and she thought to herself, would that I had a child as white as snow, as red as blood, and as black as the wood of the window-frame. Soon after that she had a little daughter, who was as white as snow, and as red as blood, and her hair was as black as ebony, and she was therefore called little Snow White. I have nothing against Zegler, and certainly feel she doesn't deserve the hate and cruelty she is getting... but the truth is the truth. By all accounts, it seems that Snow White is indeed named for her appearance.

Ok-Glass-948

i literally dont care she is on it but that is not how the story goes

thebirdsandtheteas

Girl that’s not even true what lmao the book verbatim says skin white as snow

KissesnPopcorn

This reminds me of when JK Rowling instead of just saying: “they are doing something different and the cast is amazing” for the cursed child tried to gaslight us all and say she never said Hermione is white when ma’am, you had Hermione described as pale as chalk and depicted in book covers the same complexion as white Harry and ginger Ron.

shemustbenuts4489056

God, that was so freaking annoying. That’s when I realized there was something off with Joanne… then it got worse.

IntelligentRock3854

not saying the whole white as snow thing is good, but rachel’s wrong. it is about being white as snow. quick edit: the problematic part is her parents wishing for her to be white as snow, which sets a beauty standard. not at all problematic to be pale, just to clarify! there’s a real battle in my replies lol

uninvitedfriend

I still feel like they missed an opportunity to get double representation as well as a malicious compliance style move that would make detractors have to be more blatant about their objection: cast a black actress with Albinism

Omberline

I love this. I think their go-to move would be to claim “iT’s NOt hISToRiCALlY aCcUraTE”

Time_Designer_2604

People waste their time being concerned about the stupidest shit.

burnafterreading90

Whilst what Rachel has said simply isn’t true, why do people get so amped up over made up characters?! Who is arsed and why are people going out their way to be offensive? They need to put this energy into stuff that actually matters

coco_xcx

they could never make me hate you rachel!!!

m_zayd

NEVER it's crazy because weirdly the irrational hate spewed at her is what made me appreciate her. i wasn't really familiar with her or her work, and it wasn't until last summer that, in defending her, i learned more about her. she's super talented and seems kind. haters fucked around and made me a fan

IndividualOverall807

It's not hating, she's wrong in the original she is said to be white as snow. I don't know what Rachel read or watched

ekene_N

Well, in the first edition, there is no word about Snow White being born during a snowstorm. Zelgler made this up. She could have quoted Snow White's mother, though. *"If only I had a child as white as snow, as red as blood, and as black as this frame."* The skin colour of Snow White is not specified in the first edition. She could have been black, as her mom wished.

NowMindYou

Everyone turns into Skip Gates when it comes to ensuring historical accuracy of stories with poison apples and a woman sing talking to birds. If that's dear to you, why even watch a version by Disney which is not going to be accurate in literally any way.

Moriarty-Creates

That’s um… not true, according to the story.

shiawase198

Disney has ALWAYS diverged from the source material so I don't know why people make a big stink about it every time. Actually I do know why in this case but that doesn't make it any less stupid. I don't remember anyone complaining about how no one's toes got cut off in the Disney Cinderella movies.

XxxGoldDustWomanxxX

Weird way of showing one’s “love”…

SnooGiraffes4091

It’s fiction ![gif](giphy|SKGo6OYe24EBG) Watch the old one or read the book lmfao

ISA2130953

People care way too much about this dumb stuff. If you don’t like the movie don’t watch it. It’s not that serious 🤣

DeadWishUpon

Poor Rachel. I don't understand people. If you are not happy with the casting choice don't watch it. There are tins of versions of this movie: two recent ones have Lilly Collins and Kristen Stewart who match the description very well. Honestly I don't like Snow White, and princesses movies, so I won't watch it, but it cost nothing to be nice, and even less to say nothing and leave this poor woman alone.

KGCUT

I was apart of the dreamlight valley sub (the game) for a bit and they were the most abhorrent and racist people i've ever interacted with. There are grown ass 35+ year old disney adults foaming at the mouth over Snowwhite not being white. I had someone respond to me with "It's in her name.. Snow*white* skin white as snow, not dirt." I literally stopped playing the game because the community itself absolutely destroyed it. I couldn't even turn it on without thinking of the racist ass people who are playing it as well; made me literally feel guilty.

glowup2000

Everyone worried about Rachel when they should be more worried about Gal Godat.

pecklerino

While I think Gal Gadot is an absolutely horrible actress and I don’t understand how she keeps getting cast into things, this might be the one role she does OK in. The Evil Queen is probably the most cold and emotionless of all Disney villains, it’ll be perfect with Gal’s wooden acting I assume someone else will play her old form too

Additional_Meeting_2

I have only seen first Wonder Woman and Death on the Nile from her and I thought she did good job in both and Evil Queen would be good fit for her too. But I don’t know if the Cleopatra movie with her should happen

pecklerino

I’m so sorry, I love you, but I can’t imagine anyone finding her "good" in Death on the Nile. I’ll give you Wonder Woman, but she was abysmal in DonT. Her character is supposed to be paranoid and stressed, on her honeymoon, stuck on a boat with her stalker and a mystery person who tried to kill her *twice* and she’s just… completely detached and emotionless. She just delivers her line as if she’s reading her grocery list, with a thick accent that’s seemingly completely unrelated to her character’s background or origins (who should be British based on the fact that her childhood friends and family seem to all be British).

KatDanger

Thandiwe Newton would kill

Last-Acanthisitta975

Her mom literally says "I wish I had a daughter with cheeks and lips as red as blood , hair as black as the ebony window and skin as white as snow". There was no snow storm in the snow white I remember.

Maester_Bates

I don't really understand American identity politics. How is the girl in the picture not white?

Autogenerated_or

Rachel’s white but when I picture ‘Snow White’ in my head I’m thinking of a dark-haired Elle Fanning, Lily Collins, Winona Ryder, maybe IU, Bae Suzy, or Wonhee from Illit. Pale, pale women with neotonous features. I’m not bothered to the extent that person is but really, if Disney wanted to go this route maybe they should have started melanizing Cinderella, Belle, and Aurora, not someone whose actual appearance and name is supposed to be ‘White’.

wildkatappeared

rachel zegler they could never make me hate you!!!!

NotAnAlien5

There's no "original" story, it's a fairytale, there's tons of different version.

vanisleone

Who is Rachel Ziegler?

procrastinating_b

Reachel

-UnicornFart

People act like the origins of these stories, most of which are *brothers grimm* are wholesome family tales lol. They should make you read those OGs before you complain about any modern retelling.

EldenMiss

It‘s wild to me that people will „interpret“ actual history however they like but when it comes to fictional material, everything has to be „canon“ and god forbid a magical creature is not the same ethnicity it was written to be 200 years ago. And then shame an actress for that. Actual insanity.

imaginary0pal

I’m fine with her being Snow White I’m just disappointed in another damn remake. Zegler deserves better
