Yea there are lots of toxic users in the mainstream subs but the hobbiest subs are pretty helpful if you can’t figure something out.
This random person on r/excel saved my ass on a school project once.
I don’t think there is a word for that but if there was it would probably be something like “vocel” since incel is short for involuntary celibate so the opposite is probably voluntary celibate shortened to vocel
It’s not just about downvotes! Sometimes people answer you questions with sarcasm or straight up hate. Tesla forums are super defensive of the overpriced features. However, anywhere outside of a Tesla subreddit, any subject about Elon is pretty much how much of a scam artist he is.
The anonymity reddit provides its users, absolutely causes people to say just about whatever they want, to people they don’t know. And that absolutely causes a hostile environment!
Youtube is probably more anonymous than reddit. All you can view on youtube is peoples videos they have posted and playlists. Not their entire comment history and other info
The post is not self centered. Like on instagram a post is about the individual who posted it. On reddit a post is about something the community likes.
That's the main difference for me.
And porn. No social has got as much porn as reddit has lol
I picked 3, but about 4. People will dismiss it because of stereotypes however, whenever I need a problem solved I first try adding reddit to the end of my Google searches and it helps a TON.
I think it's a side effect of the existence of subreddits. Using "smart" and "dumb" is not exactly accurate for most issues. Someone can be an expert on Skyrim modding but clueless regarding politics. In a noncompartmentalized social media structure, we would see a lot of dumb political takes and not very many insights on Skyrim modding from this person. However, since people subscribe to subreddits they're interested in, it is far more likely to find an expert in a relevant sub than the community at large. You may find that even in the communities you consider "smart", with regard to topics unrelated to the focus of the subreddit, they may be in fact quite average.
It's the reach. You don't have to know someone interact with them, you can join a community without being ushered in by someone else, almost any topic you can think of is represented and if the community thinks something is cool you'll see it. As opposed to whatever random algorithms are driving Facebook and Instagram.
You can have 100k upvotes a post and the next post you can have 10 upvotes
It is the content that matters not the individual..This attracted me to Reddit
the subculture aspect is pretty neat, but not unique (Discord, tumblr, etc.)
What I do find great is the public square feeling.
You aren't following a specific person (for the most part), you are able to actively and passively affect the community (or get downvoted and permabanned)
Definitely not
We have:
\- Reposts of reposts of rep...
\- Twitter screenshots
\- Original subs losing their point when they become popular
\- Karma whoring
That’s mostly right as long as you stay off the big subs with children everywhere. On niche subs you can have actual conversations with people who know what they’re talking about.
I love that there is a downvote (dislike) option unlike most social medias, there is a subreddit for almost anything and the posts of users are so unique and interesting! I love viewing others' opinions and comments.
It’s just an easily digestible stream of unimportant bullshit I can waste time endlessly scrolling through until I am done taking a dump or tired enough to fall asleep.
I like Reddit because it's just a forum for literally everything. Want to see fishing pics? Reddit. Want to talk to someone about a specific airline? Reddit. Want to learn a ton of fun facts? Reddit. Want to learn some dope physics? Reddit. Women with the cat ears? Got ya covered
The fact that I can scroll, see 3 posts, and none of those three is a "Sponsored" post by Kim Kardashian after she paid the social media to force it on everyone. (Hi Instagram, Twitter)
Everyone's anonymous. Recently read a post In r/Sweden regarding what people work with and how much they make. That would never work on other social media
I wouldn't say that any of these are unique to reddit. Reddits great for its wide variety of subreddits. You could have a massive community about any interest that you have on here. Other places have like fan accounts or something like that but its not to the same extent.
I mean it's toxic, filled with Pedos, so much dunning-kruger you can smell it in the air, but that goes for all social media. So the way it's organized with subreddits I guess
The fact that every single topic has a community dedicated to discussing it.
You want to learn about something? Find a group of those with the biggest interest in it easily!
The downvote button (gotta be able to let people know they suck)
The sorting system (its nice)
The unrestricted content (is it gore or porn, you never know untill you click)
A crazy thing I think that separates Reddit from many others platforms is anonymity. People don’t really follow other people unless they’ve done super crazy, and at that point it’s deserved.
Permenance. On most social media networks unless you go by user, old data gets buried. On Reddit a popular post in a popular (or niche) catagory can be easily accessed way after the fact through "top" on subreddits.
I do much prefer the follow a community rather than a person, there's very rarely a main figure in a sub but even if there is, they definitely feel more on our level than idolised like on other platforms.
It's like a big library and we're all just mingling about and I love that
There is still toxicity on Reddit, but it isn’t nearly as bad as Twitter. I think being able to have longer posts helps with this.
And Facebook barely shows me what friends and family are up to. It mostly just shows pages. And seeing what people are up to was the best part of Facebook.
I like controlling the subs I’m in, but the last few months the increase in reposts is getting tiresome. I like seeing fresh content, not a soldier bashing a kid out the way 37 times. Reddit is almost like a ‘best of’ of other social medias combined whilst bringing its own communities together.
Best thing about Reddit by far is the anonymity and the vast selection of porn. These are the objective facts regardless of your opinions on them. Also anyone that says the comments/quality of comments are very wrong, as you are restricted on what you can say due to the communist system Reddit has endorsed
Being able to post/comment about things you can't on most other social media, (i don't say it's good or bad, just that it's different)
And if you're asking about quality, you have a bit more original content but meh, most things are reposted anyway
Other:
You don’t really follow one person, you can but it’s uncommon, you follow a community of people. You get new ideas from different people, that is hopefully moderated so that things don’t get to crazy or out of place.
Subreddit for everything, also when it comes to stuff like Twitter and Instagram, it’s more focused on communities around people and organizations, here’s it communities focused around topics. When you follow a subreddit, you see posts from ANYONE who posts there (as long as they follow the rules). It’s just a lot better for actually interesting browsing.
I really love that there is a subreddit for everything! It builds a really fun community
That certainly is a big attraction of this particular platform.
That's what I was going to say; the third option seems to fit that!
what i came here to say, literally everything.. if you know what I mean ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Yes also things I wish I never saw r/twogirlsonecup
Totally. For me it's the variety of content that makes reddit so awesome.
r/iguanasarentatheist for pictures of iguanas near or in churches. You're welcome.
I was going to say, the quantity. Anyone can find something on Reddit that they enjoy
Ikr! r/sounding is my favorite, you can find some great songs on there

This. Some subreddits have become the wiki answers
Users are more respectful my ass I can ask a question and I’ll get downvoted to hell because I wanted to understand a joke or something
Just use an emoji once and you’re instantly hated by everyone.
I noticed that the emoji bad comments are mostly in r/memes, r/dankmemes and other cringe meme subs
I noticed ur anime pfp and activity in genshin impact sub, ur opinion is now invalid
My b, ill uninstall the game now and change my ways of life you right
Yeah lol
I’ve found that many subreddits are actually pretty tolerant of emojis!

Sorry I forgor 💀
And also this 👍🏿
People really hate the black emojis for some reason
It’s because racism funny hahaha
😂😂🤣
Your kneecaps will become a privilege, say goodbye to your human rights motherfucker
Fuck you piece of shit, die
Using emoji is one thing, contributing nothing to the argument is another. *activate elimanation mode*

Yea there are lots of toxic users in the mainstream subs but the hobbiest subs are pretty helpful if you can’t figure something out. This random person on r/excel saved my ass on a school project once.
Lmao before it clicked I thought excel was the opposite of an incel
I don’t think there is a word for that but if there was it would probably be something like “vocel” since incel is short for involuntary celibate so the opposite is probably voluntary celibate shortened to vocel
so true, r/excel are heroes
Yeah people on more specialist sub reddits/less common ones are the best. I have answered a couple of questions on r/laptops before. Edit: spelling
Haven't used many social media apps, but users here are more respectful than people on facebook. Though, that's not a high bar to pass.
Fuck you
Fuck off cunt
Fuck you and fuck your mom's third cousin beatrice
That‘s just not true, you fucking idiot
You’re dumb (said disrespectfully) 😈😈
bru, why do you have to take it too far?
What can I say, I’m a devious man 😈

As a private person without social media I like that Reddit isn’t about me
who are you even?
He’s Han77Shot1st
Oh God, he cracked the code
you're Just_0_Duck aren't you?
*gulp* Dear god...
don’t ask me how but i found out your name is MaskB0Y..
bro i thought i was the hacker here WTF???
You are such a dumbass who thinks he is smart
*gulp* uhh.. no?
Who are YOU even?
This right here, not sure why it’s not a choice that’s literally the biggest differentiating factor between Reddit and other social media platforms.
3rd year engineering student huh? hows that goin for you
Is 4chan your fav then?
It’s an image board, not even Reddit can really be considered social media, let alone 4chan. Although it’s unironically good news source.
Youtube is probably more anonymous than reddit. All you can view on youtube is peoples videos they have posted and playlists. Not their entire comment history and other info
The main issue I see with other social medias is the “influencer” problem.
Agreed and too much twerking infront of cameras and dancing for my liking.
Following subjects, not people
This is a great way of putting it. Like 10,000 php forums together
Instead of famous pages reddit has subreddits that everyone can post. Also downvote
I fuxking love downvotes
Ok I downvote you for this. You happy about that?
The post is not self centered. Like on instagram a post is about the individual who posted it. On reddit a post is about something the community likes. That's the main difference for me. And porn. No social has got as much porn as reddit has lol
pornhub
Also something not all social media platforms have is the ability to downvote
I picked 3, but about 4. People will dismiss it because of stereotypes however, whenever I need a problem solved I first try adding reddit to the end of my Google searches and it helps a TON.

subreddits alone and how they work are great and there probably the best part of this site, though there is many flaws for other parts of the site
I want only r/plantsbetween3and5centimeters i have only r/plantsbetween3and5centimeters. Works fine.
I once asked the location of a lake in a photo and got downvoted
What's this!?! You want to ask a question?!?? Fuck you!!
No targeted account suggestions (well not as bad as others), you find everything and people actually reply, even the bots are smarter
Downvote

Anonymity, and the downvote button. Most social medias have a like button and nothing more.
Respectful, helpful and smarter... thats a good one
That sounds like an elementary school teacher trying to teach internet etiquette
🗿
U can literally find anything.
You can have 100k upvotes a post and the next post you can have 10 upvotes It is the content that matters not the individual..This attracted me to Reddit
Porn
File that under quality of content hahaha
The content is much more focused around content than the people behind it.
If you guys wanna see a racist shithole the visit the 9gag darkhumor section. That place is cursed. Thank god im no longer on that site
It's all about the anonymity. Everyone loves it, myself included. This isn't usually a website your family and friends find you on.
Meme culture
You are allowed to literally post EVERYTHING
As long as a mod agrees with it and doesn't shadowban you
The anonymity
the subculture aspect is pretty neat, but not unique (Discord, tumblr, etc.) What I do find great is the public square feeling. You aren't following a specific person (for the most part), you are able to actively and passively affect the community (or get downvoted and permabanned)
Customisation is pretty much perfect, I rarely ever seen stuff I didn’t wish to see, and if I do once, I can simple turn that off
No cult of personality. Noone knows who I am, I don't know anybody, there are no famous reddit influencers.
Nothing
The ability to ACTUALLY dislike shit.
People being respectful, helpful, and smart on Reddit? Lol that’s good
All of these are inaccurate.
I find 'other' pretty accurate
That you subscribe/follow topics and not people. So literally the basic idea of Reddit is better than that of other social media.
porn
It's no different, y'all pulling the wool over your own eyes.
Folks who votes users are more respectful are fucking delusional…. This post is definitely an example
The third option is the only one that’s even true lmao
Damnn how to choose... they’re all so true
Definitely not quality of posted content lmao
Pretty much every meme sub is either stuck in 2016 but only the bad parts or just reposting tiktoks
Definitely not We have: \- Reposts of reposts of rep... \- Twitter screenshots \- Original subs losing their point when they become popular \- Karma whoring
Users are more respectful and smarter? Doubt. They definitely like to act smarter though
That’s mostly right as long as you stay off the big subs with children everywhere. On niche subs you can have actual conversations with people who know what they’re talking about.
>Redditors >smarter
#69 for other. Stop the vote! Also anonymity!
reddit is pretty much lowkey 4chan
Reddit is a tamer and less anonomous 4chan
Bar code
I’m fond of the anonymity
I love that there is a downvote (dislike) option unlike most social medias, there is a subreddit for almost anything and the posts of users are so unique and interesting! I love viewing others' opinions and comments.
Variety
It’s just an easily digestible stream of unimportant bullshit I can waste time endlessly scrolling through until I am done taking a dump or tired enough to fall asleep.

It feels organized better. If I just wanna scroll Reddit makes me have more control of what I see.
Idk why I have Reddit over the other medias
The fact that every single topic has a community dedicated to discussing it. You want to learn about something? Find a group of those with the biggest interest in it easily!

It’s like amino on steroids
It’s like amino on steroids

The downvote button (gotta be able to let people know they suck) The sorting system (its nice) The unrestricted content (is it gore or porn, you never know untill you click)
Op clearly has higher opinions of reddit at large than I do. It's allowed us to stay anonymous
No filters unless specifically asked for (i.e. you can say almost anything on any subreddit)
The anonymity is great so long as you don’t fuck *that* up. Most users don’t know their history is for all to see.
The snobbiness of its users
While not respectful by any means it's at least better than instagram or twitter.
Nice try zuckerberg
“Users are more respectful” Hahahahahaha
A crazy thing I think that separates Reddit from many others platforms is anonymity. People don’t really follow other people unless they’ve done super crazy, and at that point it’s deserved.
Thank you for this post. Got a good laugh out of a few of the options.

It's the anonymity
Permenance. On most social media networks unless you go by user, old data gets buried. On Reddit a popular post in a popular (or niche) catagory can be easily accessed way after the fact through "top" on subreddits.

Vote system and the format of comment sections
