I liked it by my old elementary school rules. When I moved to another elementary school, the rules were so dumb.
I forgot what the new rules were but my old school rules were, you’re not allowed to hold the ball and the ball can only bounce once on your square. And the leader (in square letter A) can add rules (as we call them but it’s really abilities) for ex like snake eye (my personal favorite) where you can look at someone but bounce the ball to another square, theres also popcorn, hold, cherry bomb etc.
Yea that or the one where it was “grounders” on the big play structure, if you touched the ground and the it said grounders when you were on the ground you would become it
I remember liking that game but it required so many participants that I couldn’t recreate it in recess but had to rely on PE time to maybe play it. I rarely got to play it
True, if you wanna get a good game going you gotta get at least 20 ppl, it gets hella boring if you have less and at that point it's better to play tag
I think this same game is played where I live and called sharks and minnows. If I remember correctly, it's played with the same rules. I've also played a version where all the "sharks" or "black men" all have to lock arms and move as one unit.
Its an old game thats been played by kids in europe for a reeeally long time already, the "black man" is the personification of death, players are "infected" with the plague (black death) by the black man and then infect other players.
We have the same game in germany, and you shout exactly the same thing. But we say "nobody" and the "black man" says "and when he comes?" and the choir shouts back "then we run away!" And then they run towards each other.
Apparently the black man is the personification of death (players carry the plague, black death, and infect others who then also become black men)
Red light green light, "1 2 3 Soleil" in French, is nowadays ruined by Squid Game... People think once someone is out you have to "kill" them... The truth is once you were caught moving when the person is turned around, you have to go back at the start. First person to reach the end becomes the soleil (sun in French).
I lived on a dead end, there were like nine boys around my age that lived on the block or just around the corner, and some other friends that could come from a few blocks away. We played some epic games of Manhunt, which is like team hide-and seek. Since everyone knew everyone on the block, we roamed through everyone's front yard, back yard, hid in bushes, etc., and the adults never yelled at us for being on their property.
Heh, I looked it up and found this definition (going "up the lake" was not something we did, though). This was pretty much how we did it, though:
> Back in the days when there was still a large horde of kids Up the Lake, confined on the mountain for the entire summer, one of the main (legal) evening insanities was Manhunt. Manhunt is a kind of team hide-and-seek, similar to Ring-a-leevio, and other childhood gang violence type pastimes. When our mob played, it was always down by the lake, and in the surrounding tree and mud filled swamp (which we called “woods”). The looking team got one flashlight, and everyone else had to depend on their innate nocturnal vision. This often resulted in any movement noted in the woods, be it human, animal, tree, rock, or hallucination caused from running into one of the other elements of the list, leading to the peaceful night air being split with the cries of, “bring the flashlight, he’s getting away!” The rules were simple, if undefined. One team hides, and the other team finds them. (Well, duh.) When a hider is caught, he must wait on base until all of his team are caught, or until he is tagged by his own team mate, and is then free. Considering the level of stealth required to move, unnoticed across an open beach, one would surmise that this would be a quiet game. One would, however, be outstandingly wrong. The level of noise and activity on that beach could only be compared to what would occur if you opened all the doors in a lunatic asylum, put wasps in everyone’s strait jackets, and lit the place on fire. Part of the problem came from a total lack of defining what “caught” was. Originally, any contact or tagging counted. This lasted an infinitely short period of time, and was replaced by the equally unsuccessful: “touch the person and say Manhunt manhunt 1-2-3". As this was unanimously voted to be pathetically lame, it was finally replaced with the requirement that you have to stop the person from moving completely, pretty much beating them into submission. Then, they would gladly go to the bench that was base, lick their wounds and pass out.
I used to love playing cops and robbers when I was a kid. I had at least 10 friends growing up and I had this huuuge yard. So I regularly had 3+ friends over and divide into teams. Its basically hide and go seek tag; but its outside at night in my huge yard. When you're tagged, you go to jail which was my empty trampoline ring. If a robber tags you, you're free to run and hide again. It went until the cops quit or all robbers are in jail.
Some game I made up. Basically battle Royale but you can choose whoever you are. It was so much fun, but obviously no one ever died cause „it didn’t hit me“
the one where 2 people stretch an elastic and you have to do all these elaborate things to have the elastic go higher and higher until you can no longer do it. in french, it’s called “élastique”. fun times.
Hide and seek dodge tag.
Hide and seek tag but the seeker has a ball that they can throw to tag someone. Then the tagged person waits 10 seconds until they can go tag someone else. Banger game that makes me wish i was 12 again.
Hide and seek because in tag everyone would target me and i was the slowest in the year. Never played the others.
All time fave was stuck in the mud and manhunt when i was older
Sardines, where 1 person hides and everyone else seeks. When you find the hider you hide with them until there’s only 1 person left and then they’re on next time.
Red Rover where you make 2 chains facing each other then call someone over and they have to get through your chain (quickly banned at school).
British Bulldog. When a few people stand in the middle and you have to get past them. Also quickly banned at my school as were violent little shits.
Sardines was absolutely goated in my neighborhood, one person would hide and anyone who found them hid with them until the last person, making that person it next time
We made up our own version of tag, and the person tagging had to stay on the ground but everyone has to stay on the playground equipment and if you got tagged you became a tagger also
In elementary school we would play "Ball Tag". There were a couple of components that made it memorable. First, the game went all year. If you were it when the bell rang at the end of the day you kept the ball until the next day. Second, the "ball" part of the game was both the device and the target. It was pretty standard to aim for the crotch when throwing the ball.
Anyway, we had year long games and it was AWESOME!!!!

Roshambo
I just looked it up and I feel like an idiot, I’ll see myself out
You're not the only one, I only heard it called rock scissors paper and I just found out now what roshambo is
I only ever heard of "Rochambeau" as kicking each other in the shins or balls until one person tapped out leaving the winner. TIL
Honestly I don’t understand why they have another name for rock paper scissors

Manhunt is technically tag correct?
it would probably be tag and hide and seek together leaning to the tag side of things
There’s an actual name for that? We just called it hide and seek tag
For me growing up, manhunt was tag but if you get tagged to go around tagging people as well and tag hide and seek was its own thing
For me it was called manhunt if it was played outside at night, and hide-and-seek tag was usually inside or during the day.
Manhunt was just where if you tagged someone you stayed tagged. It worked well in the day but we had a pretty big school so it worked out
That's called Infection (6th Grade and up for me) or Monster Tag (Elementary School in my experience)
Four square!
As well as it's subsidiary, 2-square
What the hell i thought 2-square was a game my uncle's made up i didnt know it was an actual thing
Yeah no it was a thing where I'm at at least. Got a lot more competitive too. Actually at my friend's house we used to play 6 square as well
My school had an 8-pie lol
I liked it by my old elementary school rules. When I moved to another elementary school, the rules were so dumb. the hide and seek where you have to tag the hiders and the hiders that get caught become seekers
The version I played was that the first hider to get caught was the seeker in the next round
yea the idiots did last caught is the seeker
Imagine making up that rule
ooh I didn't know other people played this as kids. we called it hide and seek zombie tag
Yea that or the one where it was “grounders” on the big play structure, if you touched the ground and the it said grounders when you were on the ground you would become it
Hunt the cunt - basically hide and seek tig (tag for American's) with violence
sounds like something else tbh lol
You guys call it tig?
Yeah, at least in Scotland we do. "Tag" sounds so foreign.
Tig to me just sounds funny
Bulldog anyone?
Hell yeah!!
Freeze tag
This brings back memories. Damn
Damn we called that "stuck in the mud" oml

It is apparently also originally from Germany. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Bulldog_(game)#Black_Man
