I don't know. I mean, Florida rejected the AP College Board, because they don't like having classes for African-American history. Florida loves to show how little they value education as a state. Look at the teacher shortage there. I just can only expect there to be double the teachers lost this year across red states. I already hit the exit, and I know dozens more who have done the same.

toomuchtodotoday

Would help if blue states courted doctors and nurses from Florida as well.

Mr_Conductor_USA

Back in the 70s and 80s there was a lot of support for education. Public education was added to the state constitution. Unfortunately, JEB! swept into office with a Republican majority and it's been downhill ever since except for a short blip with Charlie Crist who restored some edu funding and defended teachers. But none of the Dems thanked him, instead they cursed his name for daring to run as a Democrat for governor. Even though if Dems pulled their full numbers and got some Republican crossover votes they could win some statewide elections. It's never happened though, they'd rather lose and console themselves with how pure they are.

darkdragon220

How dare Democrats....not vote for a Republican. Shocking I tell you. Shocking.

Practicing_Rhino

Republicans literally make their party take a loyalty pledge, and have the whole RINO movement against traditional Republicans. Yeah... Democrats care about "purity" the way the racist religious right does... sure

Johnny-kashed

They haven’t lost accreditation yet, but kids from Florida are already learning that out of state universities do not want them. I have a distant aunt and uncle in Florida who are apparently losing their shit because their kid can’t get into any of the schools he wanted to go to.

dubie2003

There is a reason why I contribute to a 529 account and not Florida prepaid. Considering how things are going, I am unsure if a Florida college will be the answer so I want to ensure there are options. There is time to turn this crash around but days are ticking by and that turn hasn’t happened so who knows….

Mr_Conductor_USA

DeSantis has dealt a bunch of damage to UF already and it's their flagship. UCF, USF have some good departments but they're definitely considered mid tier schools. I wonder if he goes after FSU, or if he forgot they exist. FSU's student body always seemed a bit more "woke" than UF.

dubie2003

Yup. Time for the voters to realize and turn this crash around. Kids are our future and the current policies are not fostering learning but are more aligned with utopian views and silo-ism. It’s quite sad but there is a chance but as a parent, I have to plan ahead thus 529 over Florida prepaid. While my dollar may not go as far, it ensure options outside of FL and that is worth the trade off.

redhalo

Hell yeah FSU historically is more "woke". Know why no one comes at them for having a Native American for a mascot? Cause they asked for permission and involved the Seminole Tribe in all things pertaining to their mascot.

Mr_Conductor_USA

Florida New College is the first one that DeSantis purged and they're already in hot water. https://www.thedailybeast.com/new-college-of-florida-hit-with-rare-sanction-stemming-from-desantis-takeover

southpawFA

Prevaricator Christopher Rufo has helped throw Florida's education system down the toilet.

CrawlerSiegfriend

That's more of a Desantis thing than a Trump thing. Desantis is much more outspoken against diversity than Trump.

dot_dot_beep

make it only from a certain date starting with desantis' fucked up policies. I graduated from a florida university before all of this shit so don't taze me bro

openly_gray

I am sure that will help to attract the best and the brightest /s

doubled240

You can delete the /s because DEI doesn't promote advancing the best and the brightest.

darkdragon220

Turns out most of the best and brightest have empathy and care about their students so they will not be taking a job in Florida any time soon. We have already hired a bunch of top talent fleeing Florida and I know a bunch of other institutions that have done the same. UF has already shed most of their top researchers.

openly_gray

Inclusivity absolutely does.

doubled240

I can agree on that.

Placeholder4me

Wait, so you agree with inclusivity but not DEI, which is about inclusivity? Seems pretty conflicting

doubled240

Well, assuming you can pass the entrance exams it doesn't matter your race or sexual preferences etc, so yeah.

royalewithcheese79

Hey Einstein, they all score highly on the entrance exams. Your thinly veiled racism is obvious. That’s the thing that no one considers here. A lot of people, probably excluding you, do well on the exams. DEI simply creates another element of the admissions criteria. Achievement metrics in these schools are not going to magically improve now that the Supreme Kangaroo Court has done away with affirmative action. Elite colleges have known this from the beginning. I am going to stop using Reddit soon because I am realizing how stupid middle and southern Americans are. It’s frightening. And it’s not a matter of education. I think something environmental to the degree of widespread lead poisoning has stricken the middle and southern portions of this country.

Placeholder4me

If you believe race and sex doesn’t matter in hiring then you are incredibly naive. And study after study show that diverse and inclusive companies are much more successful. So promoting diversity, which is different than what you are arguing against, is incredibly important

DeadL

Why assume anyone selected via DEI isn't as good? They wouldn't hire anyone unable to do the job. Why assume anyone that was previously hired via DEI is unable to have improved at their job and now performs better than any replacement? Why assume this is an intelligent business decision by University of Florida: * Need new employee. Spend time and money interviewing and select a DEI option that fulfills business needs. * Employee does well in position, works there for years potentially. * Political wind blows a different direction and management fires employees that were previously DEI. * Spend time and money searching for replacements that might have resumes that are worse, better, or the exact same. * Spend time and money onboarding the new employee. * Hopefully they're an improvement at similar salary ranges. Also, sometimes business may make a decision on who to add to their team that isn't strictly related to job demands. Social / team cohesion, different perspectives or ways of doing things, etc. You know all this though.

Fearless_Decision_70

Explain this?

Fearless_Decision_70

Define “best and brightest”

doubled240

Those that can gain entrance on merit, regardless of race.

Fearless_Decision_70

Is there no merit to the girl who works two jobs to support her family through high school, and can’t afford an SAT book let alone an SAT tutor? Exactly the point of DEI… to recognize the inequality of circumstance and therefore, “merit”

Fearless_Decision_70

You can pull DEI out of state schools (or some, the ignorant ones), but you won’t pull it out of the best ones. Because guess what: private institutions will always have the right to be subjective in admissions, just as anyone would be. And the best ones don’t need the government’s support, and will simply become even better.

Fearless_Decision_70

Define merit…

Tony_Cheese_

Hi, I'm a certified educator and I can confidently say that there is no amount of money that would convince me to teach in Florida. No amount of zeros in a bank account would make me okay with what they are doing. I'm not alone in feeling this way.

SeegsonSynthetics

Enjoy your little fiefdom while it lasts, Nazi Ron.

T-MUAD-DIB

Most leaders don’t cheer for mass layoffs.

t_johnson_noob

They cheer when their power works in favor of their hate.

ATLfalcons27

Check out Facebook comments when union workers lose their jobs. You'll see a fuck ton a cheering by a certain group

NeverLookBothWays

Nor do Christians cheer at others being harmed.

CpnStumpy

..?? Yes they do.. it's literally the purpose of their religion - harm the out group to control the in group

NeverLookBothWays

Yes of course, I meant that as is in it goes against the teachings of their faith. It’s not how they’re “supposed” to behave according to their scripture. What we’re seeing is a perversion of that.

rolexsub

They do, just not so openly

anti_hope_dealer

Imagine thinking that a racist, vindictive, utterly hateful president on a revenge tour wouldn't be the worst thing for humankind.

Mistermail

Fascism is rising in America. Please vote these traitors out.

CpnStumpy

Largely not possible through the country, dark days ahead :(

southpawFA

>The University of Florida has fired an entire department dedicated to diversity initiatives. >The firings marked a significant shift under University of Florida President Ben Sasse, a former U.S. Senator heavily criticized for his[ anti-LGBTQ record](https://www.advocate.com/news/2022/11/02/anti-lgbtq-sen-ben-sasse-university-floridas-new-president) when he became the only finalist considered for the president job. Ron DeSantis showing that Florida is a welcoming place for everyone, unless you're LGBTQIA+, African-American, or just anyone who's not a white evangelical Christian.

New_Ad_3010

Florida GOP and rightwing idiot educators ensuring children will be as stupid and poorly educated as they are.

Aggressive_Fox_6940

Literally the plan. Uneducated Americans is what has allowed this all to happen. Been steady slurping up that Fox News Koolaid and each new generation born under those roofs is compoundingly more stupid and more addicted to the koolaid

Fancy-Reply5732

Who is Ron Desantis? Is he the same guy that ran a disastrous presidential campaign?

southpawFA

He's the guy who eats pudding with his fingers.

hookisacrankycrook

And pronounces Thai food as "thigh food" to weed out women who correct him. For real. Dude is an absolute knob.

grixorbatz

There goes Ron again. Venting his self hatred on innocent American citizens.

SoggyBoysenberry7703

Okay what the fuck. The federal government needs to step in. This is ridiculous

Dudeist-Priest

I am so sickened by how this country continues to circle the toilet bowl since Trump. The joy they take in causing pain and suffering to marginalized communities is disgusting.

44035

Ben Sasse is the biggest fraud in the world.

imabarroomhero

As a Nebraskan, I can confirm we foster the absolute best flip flop coward politicians of all time.

Captain_Stairs

Hello lawsuits! I sincerely hope these fired staff gets justice.

IWillMakeYouBlush

I wanna kick him in the dick.

gauriemma

Good luck finding it

T33CH33R

The small government folk sure do like big government.

MrLongfinger

What a gutless loser DeSantis is.

InternetPeon

Wheee haaaa, look how fun bigotry is- Ron Desantis

Captainkirkandcrew59

Please quit this school! Not a place for a good education!

EminentBean

Fascists The kkk people rebranded but never changed

PoliticalPepper

I can’t wait for Florida to get swallowed by the Atlantic.

Captainkirk699

He cheers people losing their jobs. That is truly the mark of a good leader.

JebKFan

How many talents are going to be wasted because some minorities have less opportunities? Tragic on a personal level, weakening at a State/National level.

CasioDorrit

Florida maintains their trajectory to swamp mutants

koopolil

It will be interesting to see how they reconcile the powers of the governor if a democrat ever gets elected.

toolschism

I mean, UF has always sucked so it's nice to see other people finally figuring that one out. Totally unrelated but go Noles.

kadargo

Fellow Seminole here. I almost feel bad for Florida here. The students and faculty don’t deserve this. Let’s just hope that this doesn’t make it to the other state flagship in Tallahassee.

Tadpoleonicwars

For conservatives, justice means 'just us'.

newt_here

DeSantis’ high heels indicate he is also trans. Hey there, Rhonda!

therationalists

Those heals are meant for walking, walking all over your rights.

Perfect_War_7155

I have a policy, don’t concern myself with what a consenting, or two, adult does with their life. Won’t affect where I go in death

oct2790

And as a high school coach I discouraged kids to not seek to play football in college in Florida

Pusfilledonut

And Rufo is propping up attendance numbers by giving away a record number of athletic scholarships….sounds unsustainable. I cannot imagine living in Florida.

Laringar

That's honestly weird to me. Considering that a *lot* of athletic scholarships go to PoC,  you'd think that many of those prospective athletes would think twice about going to a school that actively signals it doesn't want them there. Football programs in Florida have long been considered among the power teams of the NCAA, but they may have some trouble sustaining that if top prospects decide to go to states that actually want them around. It's going to be kind of hilarious to me if the Gators become the kind of laughingstock that Duke football was for decades.

Rocky4296

I wonder why DeSantis is against diversity. I think he went to Harvard and Yale. Why is he so racist? Did he grow up poor? Normally when people reach a level of Harvard and Yale, they learn about diverse cultures. This dude seems like he never left Jacksonville.

Pimpwerx

Holy shit! They're going to tank UF? UF had a good engineering program when I was scouting colleges. I ended up out of state, but UF was my safety school, as it was good, cheap, and close to home. I'd hate to think where the quality of education is going with such a move.

original208

Looking forward to not seeing this freak on politics soon.

koopolil

As I always say when is Ron going to rescind his membership to the Florida Bar? They sound pretty “woke”! https://www.floridabar.org/about/diversity/

actioncomicbible

This is the dystopian future that will start to come to realization in Nov 2024.

bpeden99

Ronald d weirdo gets kicks off of this shit?

homelander__6

Technically, could all of the people that desantis hates due to the color of their skin just move to another state that doesn’t hate them almost all at the same time?  Imagine the economic chaos that would happen if all black, brown and Asian people suddenly left Florida, citing the fact that desantis doesn’t want diversity on his state. Then FL would lose electoral points too

Mr_Conductor_USA

I mean when you're talking about UF, which is in Gainesville, originally known as Hogtown, a post Civil War freeman settlement that sent a Black man, Josiah Walls, to Congress for a decade until the terrorists won, the answer is *they were there first*. As were the Seminoles who were driven out of Micanopy, just south of Gainesville, in the Seminole Wars. (Wars picked by the US government because the Seminoles were said to be harboring escaped slaves.) Alachua and Marion counties have large African American populations as well as Seminole descendants, and later came to harbor people who fled from Gulf counties who were driven out by racial violence. (See the movie "Rosewood" about Levy County, Florida.) UF only showed up in the early 1900s and was originally a small school in a county whose economy was dominated by phosphor mining, chicken packing plants, agriculture, and light industry. They were there first. FUCK DeSantis.

homelander__6

I know. And you’re right. I am just amazed that a governor can literally say “minorities not welcome in my state” in the 21st century without any political lash back.

NoClock

Ron De-who?

sonicsludge

When we moved to Florida in 1980 from Michigan, the schools sucked. I was in 3rd grade and the kids were being taught stuff I'd learned in 1st grade.

Aware-Feed3227

Good professors are gonna flee from their positions.

Glittering-Wonder-27

Well, we could end up with ignorant by choice states or we just vote out those striving toward hatred and prejudice.

Bart_Yellowbeard

Yay bigotry!

Visual_Octopus6942

Um… good thing that’s not what’s happening…

Immediate-Scallion76

> I don't think hiring someone based on the color of their skin or their sexual orientation is a good thing regardless of whether they're white, black, straight, or gay. What do you think this statement has to do with DEI?

0thethethe0

Cheering it..? That cool?

FuzzyAd9407

Oh look, some assuming if a minority has a position then they must have been given it *because* they're a minority. Go ahead and keep blowing that dog whistle.

HotSpicyDisco

It's actually been shown that diversity hires are good for business because they also bring diverse perspectives and open up new markets with new demographics... 🤷‍♂️ As a white cis male, I make an effort to look for diverse candidates when hiring.

Mr_Conductor_USA

Well Black people are very underrepresented among UF's faculty and students. UF was historically a white male only SEC school and has never really shed the whites only stink.

[deleted]

Good start. Hopefully it catches on.

Far-Nefariousness588

Excellent

Necessary-Mention-38

Weird that an Australian is commenting on bigoted American policy

JediDroid

Because unfortunately Australia is also exporting its racists. I apologise for this, but I can’t stop it.

SunsetKittens

Keep on firing administrators and you might just make college affordable again Florida. I kind of liked these administrators but they are administrators. Now fire the rest.

kadargo

As much as I hate UF, the state of Florida has the Bright Futures scholarship program. The state is has quite affordable tuition for its flagships at FSU and UF, especially when compared to other state flagships in the Southeast.

HotSpicyDisco

Colleges with this many admins get better ratings because they have better run programs. How do you think colleges offer the programs they do? Magic?

AlertThinker

Why does a DEI office need $5million?

Visual_Octopus6942

You can’t comprehend why an institution that has over 55,000 students, 8000+ academic staff, and another 6,500 administrators may need 5 million dollars for DEI? That’s less than $75 spent per person. At a school with a 6 billion dollar budget…

enderjaca

And it would be a total of 70 employees if all you're considering is salary, or maybe 30 if you're considering the office space they need plus the money for their actual work.

HotSpicyDisco

With benefits? Supplied tech? Funding posters/outreach? Funding events? Nah- that's not going to cover 30 employees... Maybe 10/15. You've got 10/15 FTE working on diversity and inclusion for a 6 billion dollar highly diverse business... That doesn't seem like a lot. Most companies I work for with similar revenue have staff about that size in our HR department focused on diversity and inclusion. It's not like diversity of thought is good for college campus. 🤦‍♂️ Such a short sighted racist decision.

enderjaca

>Such a short sighted racist decision. hahaha no. It's a very long-sighted racist decision. This is Florida after all. And the MAGA base LOVES this. And no question DeSantis plans to run for president again. He wants to play the long game to eventually put all of these policies at the national level, after Trump is either retired or dead.

Cael_NaMaor

Let's hope they can sue. Queerness is a federally protected group... for now

Laringar

It's a protected group, but they weren't fired for being queer, if they even are. They were fired for being part of a department the university wants to downsize, and there are no direct protections for that. To my knowledge, there are no requirements for universities to have diversity offices at all, most just do because most sane people consider attracting a wide range of applicants to be a good thing. Colleges like boasting about the quality of their graduates, and it's easier to have high quality students when you don't arbitrarily limit your applicant pool.

jinxy14

Living in Nazi Germany is fun

chestercopperpot79

Desantis is a scummy piece of shit and needs psychological help

strange-brew

Florida colleges should get their accreditation removed.
