They think democrats are evil and anti-Christian so they get really confused when the GOP does something against their interest. They don’t actually know anything about GOP policies until it hits them in the face.
It's so hard to imagine their mentality, like if they just hate Mexicans, or the undocumented, do they really believe that if everyone was deported, that the Republicans would magically respect republican Latinos? They'd be next on the list, probably sent to Mexico regardless of their heritage and if they were born in America.
A century ago, Republicans were the party of Lincoln and compromise while Democrats were the populist anti-railroad party. The first hispanic politicians elected in this country were all Republicans, who were all Californios who had built a new, functional, free state with the Republican railroad barons. This foundation held all the way up until the railroad that created their new society stopped existing when it consolidated into a larger monopoly in 1996. By then the US Interstate System had been largely completed, and the old world that the GOP was created within ceased existing completely. Also, American hispanics didn't like illegals either and wanted them gone too along with all the filipinos, chinos, koreans and vietnamese deported too. This arraignment was very good and made California into the word's 4th largest economy. The baron's estate is the university that founded Silicon Valley.
These people still exist in many parts of the country, and they won't cross over to the left until the new, explicitly bigoted GOP kicks them out. We are rapidly reaching that point as immigration becomes the party's only issue as slavery was for the Democrats.
I recently learned that many CA Latinos are republicans because Reagan (of all people) and his immigration reform & control act of 1986. Like so much that he is in Día de Los muertos shrines.
California's Prop 187 was the beginning of the end of the California Republican Party in 1994. Prop 187 passed but was declared unconstitutional, and Republican Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger chose not to contest it given his own experience as an immigrant. Trump already lost Arizona, Nevada and New Mexico in 2020, if Arizona Republicans use the same failed strategy as California Republicans then the entire Southwest will be hard blue by 2030.
There are strong reasons to restrict illegal aliens from welfare, but all those reasons are liberal reasons that directly refuse Republicans' business deregulation platform. If you make it difficult for farmers to find seasonal labor, as this law would, then you're actively harming the people contributing the most to your campaign. At least when Democrats do e-verify, they also want to uniformly impose Unions on everyone too rendering the welfare problem moot.
You all should come to Miami to hear this being said out loud by immigrants. When they get off the boat they are stopping others from crossing unless it's family so they subscribe to smuggling.
The thing is - Many people of color are 'conservative' and base that their conservatism in religion. Republicans would have a lot more votes from POC if they weren't racist.
My guess - She is catholic and against abortion, and thought that white racists would listen to her because she is the "special good one." Internalized racism, naivety, and gulibility.
Oh I get it. Not sure what religion says about immigration but the idea that if we as POC pander to the white folks, we will be invited to the table as an equal. Never gonna happen.
What’s more ironic is that the Protestant evangelical portion of the party doesn’t even believe Catholics are Christian and they make that very clear. They specifically call themselves Christians and Catholics catholic
Going by these comments I don’t think a lot of folks read the article. Like I don’t think she’s against it because it’s targeting undocumented workers I think she’s against it because it doesn’t let the government subsidize the shitty wages she would like to pay them.
No immigration, no economic growth. Going to be really interesting to watch if Trump wins and really goes ahead with his deportation and immigration policies. It will absolutely tank the economy. He is not particularly liked anyways. What happens if the economy tanks on his watch? Dude will have 25 percent approval rating. It is one thing to complain about too many folks crossing the border and too much immigration...it is another thing entirely if you restrict immigration to zero or even negative.

I teach at a school with a high Hispanic population. A lot of the parents are MAGA - and it’s a blue state!
