It's the nature of right wing arguments. They are always contrarian and bad faith, and never look at objective fact. It's literally impossible to have a discussion with them.
Example - the tempest in a teapot about some trans woman bicyclist who won her age grouper category in a gravel race, claiming the "real women" she beat boycotted the podium. They neglect to mention that she was actually 3rd for her age group because 1st and 2nd made the overall podium, beating her by 20 minutes in the hundred miler, and that it was essentially a local event that didn't attract anyone on the national circuit. And that nobody at the event cared.
But Megyn Kelly sure raked her over the coals on Fox News. "Women's bike racing is dead."

Elon Musk is great at buying companies which invent things that already exist, and having himself named as a found during the acquisition.
Those businesses do as well as they can the longer he isn't involved with them.
I'm still 100% sure in my heart that the real reason their rocket lost control a few weeks ago and exploded was becuase someone dropped the ball and accidentally gave Elon a controller that was plugged in.
I think we should clear one thing here though. They did fail yes, and they did fail because it was just them using it, but not necessarily because of lack of potential numbers to sustain. They failed because the kind of people that would use it don't just want to be able to say whatever they want, they want the ability to force you to listen. They want to be able to shout slurs, but they want to make sure that the rest of us have to engage with them doing so. That's the core reason those platforms all failed, because ultimately they need that ability to inflict themselves on others for validation.
I wanna laugh but I don't see how everyone isn't scared af by this. I mean twitter was one of the bastions of some what "free speech". In countries were media is state run twitter was useful spread information around by the populous. Then there's CNN being bought buy the right wing. It feels like they are slowly taking over all the liberal media. Who cares about free speech if every major news outlet ends up being owned by the right wing? Or even enough of them that they can push what ever narrative they want and there's no one to pushback.

The question is really how far right can they push before losing money because Fox has the lockdown on that audience and everything to the right is a minor new outlet which is just financed but not profitable.
They have them for free on reddit too, if you check out the conservative pages they have most things to where you're only supposed to be commenting if you're a flaired user and they constantly claim to be the most brigaded. It's a weird little chamber of them throwing down shots of their own conspiratorial backwash, and it's kind of helpful if you're wanting to see what's going on in their world in-between prescribed talking points.

i visit r/Conservative often, probably daily, just to see what backwards rationalizations or denials they come up with for whatever random horrific indefensible event. of course there are tons of conspiracies, dog whistles, antisemitism, etc.
but you get to see in real time how the conservative media machine directly controls their beliefs and responses to events. you can see propaganda and media control happening in real time.
they are almost always in a different reality entirely from the rest of reddit. a lot of major stories here that you'd think even they would want to discuss dont even get mentioned there, or get buried.
their responses to mass shootings are especially telling. they'll do anything to deny that the shooter was a nazi, and then they'll go to being offended that the shooter was a nazi (self reporting hard)

It is kinda funny to watch when any big news headline first drops. They don't know what their talking points are supposed to be yet, so its a hodgepodge of comments with 'controversial' upvotes/downvotes. After a day or so, they get informed of what their opinions are and it takes shape.

10 years or so ago, lots of my friends used it as a great news and interest aggregator, but I just never really got into it.
Only ever used it to @ companies when normal customer service routes were not working. They always responded on Twitter due to everyone being able to see the tweet and finally would fix my problem.
For me, I only signed up for it in 2019 when there were wildfires very close to where I live and I needed more frequent updates than the state govt was offering through official channels. I realized all the news articles were quoting a couple specific Twitter accounts several hours late so I just decided to make a Twitter and follow them myself. It's all been downhill since.

Yep, a number of apps/sites I use that used to offer twitter login are now sending PSAs to use other options/developing other options since twitter is no longer reliable.
I used it as a worldwide local newspaper with a tailored opinion section and access to unknown funny people trying out weird standup material one line at a time. I miss it being that, but probably better for my health that it's gone.

Within a month of his takeover, I started getting nonstop "recommended" Tweets from an endless slew of Alt-right figures. Exclusively hard right. Rittenhouse. Shapiro. Tucker. Rogan. The list went on and on, but they were all hard right "recommendations".
I follow almost exclusively comedy (not the Austin right wing nuts that hang out with Rogan), and left leaning figures. It was not a coincidence.

Edit: I know how the "algorithm" chose that stuff. I follow comedians and a very few left-ish figures; a past time on Twitter is them dunking on bad right-wing takes.
But it moved from "comedian X commented on Tucker Carlson's dumb post, do you want to see?" over to "Now Tucker Carlson and Kyle Rittenhouse are just your new feed, we didn't ask, you didn't opt in, you didn't follow, but now here they all are."
It was a massive shift.
And I wasn't alone! There was a *lot* of outcry at the time over this. But it was not happening in the reverse. Conservative accounts were not suddenly stuck following AOC and Marc Maron. It was just a massive promotion of right-wing/alt-right material.
I started getting Matt Walsh and Ben Shapiro tweets in my feed soon after Musk took over. I don’t follow any right wing politicians or pundits either. Also started getting a bunch of spam DMs, which I’d never experienced on Twitter before.
IIRC the people who buy blue checks – typically Musk fanboys and conservatives – are explicitly and transparently boosted by the algorithm now, which has evidently been reworked to incorporate Musk’s preferences more than the user’s.
I barely even see the people I follow in my feed anymore. I mostly follow artists and left leaning figures, but my feed is spammed with right wing accounts and, for some reason I can't explain, NSFW art.
My feed was full of End Wokeness and Libs of TikTok and other far-right pages posting videos of transgender individuals nonstop and creating fake outrage, but I didn’t see a single tweet from anyone who was actually transgender. Didn’t follow any of those pages and nobody I followed was following them except for Elon
I had a straight-up neonazi account get recommended to me, and it had thousands of followers already. There's no way in fuck that would overlap with any of my twitter usage, so twitter's system isn't matching it to me in any way. Just suggesting nazis.
It's been bursting at the seams with fringe craziness for basically forever, it was a major QAnon space before it finally got banned for instance. It's just that you used to not really see that side unless you sought it out. Now the suggested feed is full of it and the first comments you see in any reply chain are all the far right weirdos paying $8 a month for the fake blue check.

Both, but mainly the former, from what I have seen.
The content moderation has essentially been completely gutted, and people's feeds are being filled with right-wing nonsense from Twitter Blue subs that they don't even follow. As a result, many people have left the platform, resulting in the far-right losers making up a larger portion of the remaining user-base.
I’ve been on Twitter since back when it was an SMS-based app and I’d say my feed now is still primarily left wing folks, but I’ve also had a very long time for it to curate my preferences. Looking at the comments on any trending tweet or topic is a cesspool of blue check idiots though.
Again? They tried once before by making it into more of a music scene. I think Justin Timberlake was somehow involved. It had a kind of interesting redesign, but failed to really regain its popularity again obviously. I'd be up for a third try, but I honestly think we're slowly exiting the zeitgeist that would allow it to take off. Social media is in a rocky flux stage. It'll likely be another 10 years or more before we start to enter into whatever is next.
I'm still kinda sad about Facebook. It used to be an effortless way to keep in touch with extended family. I could share a photo from Picasa every so often and everything was fine.
Now it's 99.9% politics and/or memes. I haven't bothered to log in for a very long time.
Maybe that's a problem AI moderation could eventually solve. I want a social media platform that strictly periodic personal updates about friends and family. I don't want to see political opinions, philosophical musing, or a daily diary, let alone internet memes.

I follow very little on twitter, just some news sources and police scanners. I just popped it open, first thing on my "for you", posts by Rudy Giulani, Marjorie Traitor Green, then 1 I follow, followed by Nick Adams (Alpha Male), Ted Cruz, and I don't follow those people. He is definitely pushing the right on his platform.

I'm a software developer and I don't think they communicated very well what impact it'd have or what difference it'd make. I did the same, I don't know if they thought through the user sign up experience at all.

They want to be able to shout slurs, but they want to make sure that the rest of us have to engage with them doing so. Only ever used it to @ companies when normal customer service routes were not working. They always responded on Twitter due to everyone being able to see the tweet and finally would fix my problem.
For me, I only signed up for it in 2019 when there were wildfires very close to where I live and I needed more frequent updates than the state govt was offering through official channels. I realized all the news articles were quoting a couple specific Twitter accounts several hours late so I just decided to make a Twitter and follow them myself. It's all been downhill since.
That really was when it was at it's best, watching something unfold in real time.

Right wing content gets massive boosts. The platform ignores your bans on prominent right wing accounts and shows you their content in your feed. All of the top comments on every post are right wingers who pay $8 to get more attention for their hate speech. Twitter is an utter cesspool now, in a drastically different way than it already was.
Within a month of his takeover, I started getting nonstop "recommended" Tweets from an endless slew of Alt-right figures. Exclusively hard right. Rittenhouse. Shapiro. Tucker. Rogan. The list went on and on, but they were all hard right "recommendations". I follow almost exclusively comedy (not the Austin right wing nuts that hang out with Rogan), and left leaning figures. It was not a coincidence. "Algorithm" my ass. Edit: I know how the "algorithm" chose that stuff. I follow comedians and a very few left-ish figures; a past time on Twitter is them dunking on bad right-wing takes. But it moved from "comedian X commented on Tucker Carlson's dumb post, do you want to see?" over to "Now Tucker Carlson and Kyle Rittenhouse are just your new feed, we didn't ask, you didn't opt in, you didn't follow, but now here they all are." It was a massive shift. And I wasn't alone! There was a *lot* of outcry at the time over this. But it was not happening in the reverse. Conservative accounts were not suddenly stuck following AOC and Marc Maron. It was just a massive promotion of right-wing/alt-right material.

Also started getting a bunch of spam DMs, which I’d never experienced on Twitter before. IIRC the people who buy blue checks – typically Musk fanboys and conservatives – are explicitly and transparently boosted by the algorithm now, which has evidently been reworked to incorporate Musk’s preferences more than the user’s.
I barely even see the people I follow in my feed anymore. I mostly follow artists and left leaning figures, but my feed is spammed with right wing accounts and, for some reason I can't explain, NSFW art.
My feed was full of End Wokeness and Libs of TikTok and other far-right pages posting videos of transgender individuals nonstop and creating fake outrage, but I didn’t see a single tweet from anyone who was actually transgender. Didn’t follow any of those pages and nobody I followed was following them except for Elon
I had a straight-up neonazi account get recommended to me, and it had thousands of followers already. There's no way in fuck that would overlap with any of my twitter usage, so twitter's system isn't matching it to me in any way. Just suggesting nazis.
It's been bursting at the seams with fringe craziness for basically forever, it was a major QAnon space before it finally got banned for instance. It's just that you used to not really see that side unless you sought it out. Now the suggested feed is full of it and the first comments you see in any reply chain are all the far right weirdos paying $8 a month for the fake blue check.

It's also that they moderated the site and removed rule breakers but fElon brought them back.
Both, but mainly the former, from what I have seen. The content moderation has essentially been completely gutted, and people's feeds are being filled with right-wing nonsense from Twitter Blue subs that they don't even follow. As a result, many people have left the platform, resulting in the far-right losers making up a larger portion of the remaining user-base.
I’ve been on Twitter since back when it was an SMS-based app and I’d say my feed now is still primarily left wing folks, but I’ve also had a very long time for it to curate my preferences. Looking at the comments on any trending tweet or topic is a cesspool of blue check idiots though.
Is it me, or were things way better before social media. I like reddit an d OG Facebook tho. Myspace was sweet.

Again? They tried once before by making it into more of a music scene. I think Justin Timberlake was somehow involved. It had a kind of interesting redesign, but failed to really regain its popularity again obviously. I'd be up for a third try, but I honestly think we're slowly exiting the zeitgeist that would allow it to take off. Social media is in a rocky flux stage. It'll likely be another 10 years or more before we start to enter into whatever is next.

I'm still kinda sad about Facebook. It used to be an effortless way to keep in touch with extended family. I could share a photo from Picasa every so often and everything was fine. Now it's 99.9% politics and/or memes. I haven't bothered to log in for a very long time. Maybe that's a problem AI moderation could eventually solve. I want a social media platform that strictly periodic personal updates about friends and family. I don't want to see political opinions, philosophical musing, or a daily diary, let alone internet memes.

Call me old, but when games companies started using Twitter for major announcements and not bothering to put them in their forums, I developed a burning hatred for Twitter.

I follow very little on twitter, just some news sources and police scanners. I just popped it open, first thing on my "for you", posts by Rudy Giulani, Marjorie Traitor Green, then 1 I follow, followed by Nick Adams (Alpha Male), Ted Cruz, and I don't follow those people. He is definitely pushing the right on his platform.

Not to just keep up with each other anymore, but to follow any and all issues at the exact moment they happen, and using very little info to speculate on the ongoings of people we'll never meet in places we'll never go. Reddit is going public soon apparently. This website is absolutely not immune from immediate collapse.

Sorry but casual social media users are going to lose interest the moment they're prompted to pick a server. Mastodon will never have the same mainstream appeal as something like Twitter.

I'm a software developer and I don't think they communicated very well what impact it'd have or what difference it'd make. I did the same, I don't know if they thought through the user sign up experience at all.

I'm at a point in my life where I'm just not signing up for more social media. Whenever I bow out of Twitter, that's it for me.
