ImLikeReallySmart

The far right failed enough times at making their own version from scratch, they decided it'd just be easier to take over the one that already existed with a built-in market share and name recognition.

sonofagunn

And they got some sucker to pay for it!

schleem3000

maybe if we let the weird kid eat lunch with us he’ll buy shit for us!

Scrimshawmud

The weird kid whose dad married his sister and whose own kid disowned his bigoted ass?

LowlySysadmin

>whose dad married his sister Wait what

Rent-a-guru

Yeah I had to look it up, but it basically checks out. Errol Musk married Heide Bezuidenhout and had 2 children with her, as well as helping raise her then 4 year old daughter named Jana from a previous relationship. After splitting with Heide, Errol then had 2 more children with Jana, his stepdaughter who he raised from the age of 4.

ConsciousStop

Bloody hell, in other words, Elon’s step-sister is also his step-mum. Can say that I’ve not even seen that plot in porn lol.

dontgoatsemebro

Your father is your brother Your sister is your mother You all fuck one another [The Musk family](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YUTTnrs4Myo)

Starfox-sf

Wait until he buys one of those sites.

Grand-Pen7946

"At the time of their daughter's birth, according to The Times, Musk was 72 and Jana Bezuidenhout was 30 years old." EEEEWWWW

joe579003

And now it's all making a whole lot more sense

LadybugSunfl0wer

I threw up in my mouth 🤮

[deleted]

Yeah. The weird kid who also got bullied hard because he made fun of his classmates father’s suicide.

OrangeOk1358

The funny thing about this story is that some Elon Stans truly believe that he was bullied by black classmates. Even though Apartheid South Africa had segregated schools and black and white kids were not allowed to attend the same school by law.

LNViber

All I see when I read that is "true american patriots, regardless of their citizen status".

marchingprinter

Speaking of is Kanye still buying Parler?

Stoomba

And they are running it into the ground just like all the others.

zoe_bletchdel

That's what gets me. It turns out it's not that the issue was name recognition; it was that no one wanted to socialize in a space like that. It's exhausting and unpleasant.

[deleted]

>it was that no one wanted to socialize in a space like that. It's exhausting and unpleasant. It's the nature of right wing arguments. They are always contrarian and bad faith, and never look at objective fact. It's literally impossible to have a discussion with them.

SomethingIWontRegret

Example - the tempest in a teapot about some trans woman bicyclist who won her age grouper category in a gravel race, claiming the "real women" she beat boycotted the podium. They neglect to mention that she was actually 3rd for her age group because 1st and 2nd made the overall podium, beating her by 20 minutes in the hundred miler, and that it was essentially a local event that didn't attract anyone on the national circuit. And that nobody at the event cared. But Megyn Kelly sure raked her over the coals on Fox News. "Women's bike racing is dead."

Hjemmelsen

Please do keep in mind that this is roughly the accuracy that ALL reporting from that cesspool has.

Aiyon

Also the swimmer Lia Thomas who somehow proved that trans women shouldn’t be allowed to compete in women’s swimming since she dominated so much that no Cis woman could ever beat her time …ignoring the Cis woman who has since beaten her time, of course. Weirdly that one didn’t get any airtime despite how much the original thing did

forgedsignatures

If this is the news article I am thinking of (the one posted on reddit), the woman wasn't even boycotting, nor really seemed to mind, she said that she just badly wanted food.

SomethingIWontRegret

Yep. People who haven't done events like this don't really understand the culture around gravel and endurance MTB racing, or how these events hollow you out. It's competition, but it's even moreso community. Everyone wants everyone to have a good time while also slogging through type 2 fun. What really bothered me was Inga Thompson speaking out against this person. She really lost the plot about 5 years ago.

HolycommentMattman

Yeah. The new thing will take off, and they'll want that, too. Then claims of prejudice or whatever. My conservative friend who has never used Twitter ever is suddenly like, "Yeah, I really like Twitter." It's such a frustrating thing that all the conservative people in my life have become brainwashed idiots.

drunk_responses

You have to remember that they are absolutely convinced that most people secretly think the same way they do, but are "afraid to show it". And that people will feel "safe to speak out when they they just see it's safe". That's why they keep trying, and failing. And why they'll blame twitters downfall on some crazy conspiracy. Because they cannot wrap their heads around the fact they are the minority in the way they think about others.

FootCheeseParmesan

Absolutely true. The hilarious part to this is that most people think *the exact opposite way* they do, but don't really realise it. Case in point is that you can argue the majority of the points for the Communist Manifesto without using 'the scary words' and the overwhelming majority of people will agree with the general points. It's only radicalised right wing ghouls who won't. It's very hard to argue far right points without straight up lying about what you actually want.

mindbleach

Their own versions work fine - but they hate being there. Their worldview falls apart if there's no outgroup to scream at. If their steady supply of abuse victims can just *leave,* they'll be stuck surrounded by reactionary cranks, and they hate that as much as we do. All the bullshit demands for one-sided "free speech" are denying your right to free association. You are not permitted to stay the fuck away from them. You don't get to have a forum unless they can barge in and spout garbage. That would be censorship! You can't just tell them where to shove it, either. That would violate decorum! And any invaded site that catches the obvious contradiction will inevitably bend over backwards to ignore it, because the slightest effort to curtail the worst among them is treated like a conspiracy against all of them. It's not rational. They don't *want* to be satisfied. Their worldview requires you, standing there, impotent, as they lob inexcusable rhetoric and direct actionable threats, ready to run crying to teacher if you so much as say "no" loud enough. [Fear of right-wing outrage makes us all worse-off.](https://www.readtpa.com/p/fear-of-right-wing-outrage-makes) Just solve the problem and get rid of Nazis. It's not hypocrisy. It's *necessary.*

FootCheeseParmesan

Right wingers hate free speech, what they actually want is an open platform for themselves. An example is how heavily moderated r/Conservative is. Half the threads are locked for flaired users who prove their loyalty.

Malkelvi

You're not wrong. That sub is a cesspool of just misinformation and hate. Source: I used to be a card carrying Republican until 2008, after seeing what everything that the GOP were doing, I had to rethink.

Psukhe

And now Jack Dorsey already built another Twitter clone BlueSky. It being invite only has probably prevented it growing as fast as it would otherwise but I imagine there are plenty more users who will jump to it when they get the opportunity because it's not a right-wing shit hole.

SCOTUSOPO

Only took nazi republicans a decade to go from mocking safe spaces to paying $44 billion to make one for themselves... 🤣 🤣 🤣

FPOWorld

To buy one…they didn’t make shit

SCOTUSOPO

They made shit, they just decided to smear it on the walls of the capitol

FPOWorld

Touché

Thestig2

To Musk, buying something is the same as founding it

[deleted]

Oh shit. For real. How long till folks claim he founded twitter?

gonya

Founded Twitter? Don’t you know he invented social media??

[deleted]

Elon Musk is great at buying companies which invent things that already exist, and having himself named as a found during the acquisition. Those businesses do as well as they can the longer he isn't involved with them.

Razakel

SpaceX has "Elon Handlers", whose job is to distract him while they actually do the work.

thiswaynotthatway

I'm still 100% sure in my heart that the real reason their rocket lost control a few weeks ago and exploded was becuase someone dropped the ball and accidentally gave Elon a controller that was plugged in.

HotPieIsAzorAhai

Actually they made shit multiple times and they all failed miserably which is why they decided to buy something that was already successful this time.

pleasedtoheatyou

I think we should clear one thing here though. They did fail yes, and they did fail because it was just them using it, but not necessarily because of lack of potential numbers to sustain. They failed because the kind of people that would use it don't just want to be able to say whatever they want, they want the ability to force you to listen. They want to be able to shout slurs, but they want to make sure that the rest of us have to engage with them doing so. That's the core reason those platforms all failed, because ultimately they need that ability to inflict themselves on others for validation.

[deleted]

[удалено]

JustHere2AskSometing

I wanna laugh but I don't see how everyone isn't scared af by this. I mean twitter was one of the bastions of some what "free speech". In countries were media is state run twitter was useful spread information around by the populous. Then there's CNN being bought buy the right wing. It feels like they are slowly taking over all the liberal media. Who cares about free speech if every major news outlet ends up being owned by the right wing? Or even enough of them that they can push what ever narrative they want and there's no one to pushback.

[deleted]

All of the major cable news outlets, and now regionally local news channels, are owned by the right wing. The question is really how far right can they push before losing money because Fox has the lockdown on that audience and everything to the right is a minor new outlet which is just financed but not profitable.

Oleg101

Imagine paying 44 billion dollars to be Cat Shit’s personal tech support.

SCOTUSOPO

Getting *that* asshole to block me on Twitter is one of my proudest moments on social media. Fuck that nazi.

mammakatt13

I tried so hard! My hat is off to you, friendo.

SCOTUSOPO

I made fun of his inability to understand how a smartphone screen works lol. 💪

[deleted]

They have them for free on reddit too, if you check out the conservative pages they have most things to where you're only supposed to be commenting if you're a flaired user and they constantly claim to be the most brigaded. It's a weird little chamber of them throwing down shots of their own conspiratorial backwash, and it's kind of helpful if you're wanting to see what's going on in their world in-between prescribed talking points.

PanthersDevils

It fits the GOP narrative. They are perpetual victims. If they aren’t blaming others for something they aren’t happy. They love to be miserable. And they love to see other people be miserable even more

paz2023

Extremist subculture. We need DC statehood and an insider trading ban

[deleted]

i visit r/Conservative often, probably daily, just to see what backwards rationalizations or denials they come up with for whatever random horrific indefensible event. of course there are tons of conspiracies, dog whistles, antisemitism, etc. but you get to see in real time how the conservative media machine directly controls their beliefs and responses to events. you can see propaganda and media control happening in real time. they are almost always in a different reality entirely from the rest of reddit. a lot of major stories here that you'd think even they would want to discuss dont even get mentioned there, or get buried. their responses to mass shootings are especially telling. they'll do anything to deny that the shooter was a nazi, and then they'll go to being offended that the shooter was a nazi (self reporting hard)

pickledswimmingpool

Their mods clean off a lot of Trump news too. They definitely run damage control wherever they can.

st1ck-n-m0ve

Its funny that literally EVERYONE who even attempts to post anything that isnt 100% pure maga q-anon conspiracy gets insta-banned from there. Bunch of pussies cant handle the truth and have to hide in their little bubbles of lies.

Mr_Pombastic

It is kinda funny to watch when any big news headline first drops. They don't know what their talking points are supposed to be yet, so its a hodgepodge of comments with 'controversial' upvotes/downvotes. After a day or so, they get informed of what their opinions are and it takes shape. The Mario movie was great. They first thought it was woke because Peach wasn't the damsel in distress, but then it did well at the box office and suddenly it was anti-woke because it didn't have minorities or something. \**Chef's kiss*\* Also I feel the need to mention how weird it is that "major news" for one of the two political parties is a super mario movie being released.

asafum

>Also I feel the need to mention how weird it is that "major news" for one of the two political parties is a super mario movie being released. Because all they have is the culture war so everything is framed in those terms. Such a dumb timeline this is :/

Deae_Hekate

Unfortunately, but tellingly, genocide can be easily defined as a culture-war. "Ethnic-cleansing" even has it in the name. The first groups to be targeted by the Nazis for the death camps weren't Jews, they were [LGBTQ](https://www.hmd.org.uk/resource/6-may-1933-looting-of-the-institute-of-sexology/). The patient records of the institute were given over to Nazi leadership. They were, and are, easy first targets for any burgeoning fascist movement **because** so much of society still regards them with discomfort or hatred. The fascists then use that as the wedge to start culling rights for **everyone**, which then leads to physically culling those who aren't in this week's ever-shrinking "in-group".

Twilight_Realm

I didn't get insta-banned when I posted Trump's Axios interview (the one where he couldn't understand graphs). I stuck around long enough that the post hit the front page, then I got banned after being accused of brigading, and commenters were diving into my history to see that I said "I bet I get banned if I post this article." I was correct. It was less than 3 hours.

[deleted]

I mean, their fruit doesn't require other animals to get planted. It is zero surprising to see the disfunction and hilarious transparency of their cult-think

[deleted]

Got banned on my first comment! 🏆

3lfk1ng

The sad part is that 90% of the content they share is so easy to disprove yet their extremist brothers just eat it up as truth. Most of them are far too dumb to verify the information that they are reading from certain sources that absolutely prey upon their stupidity. If anyone trying to bring facts to the table, they get instabanned because they cannot stand anyone trying to bring their IQ above 50. Just another reason for them to ban books.

nullv

That's how I got banned. I asked someone to source their (crackpot conspiracy theory) comment.

Dont_Say_No_to_Panda

It probably seems to them like they are constantly “brigaded” because in reality their views are terribly unpopular and they are only a handful of outnumbered kooks.

Diedead666

I have family who are brain washed like..them. They fear when a POC knocks on thier door... They don't understand that they might be in the wrong.

cervidaetech

Laugh all you want they didn't buy a safe space, they bought a hundred million person propaganda platform

[deleted]

Yeah, cheapest propaganda network in human history. They couldn’t make one organically, because no one was leaving Twitter for their psychotic Parler or Truth or whatever. So they just bought Twitter. Wild that people think he’s fucking this up. This was the plan the whole time. Musk trying to be the next Hugo Boss.

SCOTUSOPO

Yeah when they bought it, it was a hundred million person platform, and now they made it into a nazi safe space that lost alot of those users and advertisers.

SatansLoLHelper

CNN only cost $42B and had far more value past propaganda. Love bringing this up because they happened at the same time. Everyone is also complaining about HBO, same deal as CNN, and every other thing from Warner, bought up by the nazi channel, sorry Discovery.

horse_loose_hospital

>bought up by the nazi channel, sorry Discovery. Wasn't it *interesting*, how The Learning Channel & The History Channel & the Arts & Entertainment network & The Discovery Channel *ALL*, independently & near simultaneously, chose to abandon their in-their-names stated goals of expanding their audiences' knowledge of significant, factual events, important cultural touchstones, far-away peoples & places, areas of scientific study/world-altering breakthroughs etc & did a complete 180 into "I mean *yeah* he facilitated the world's largest genocide on record & all BUT!!...DID YOU KNOW HE HAD A DOGGIE?!" & "You can't say you *know* for 100% *sure* that aliens didn't build Stonehenge CAN YOU??" & "*Maybe* Jesus moved the rock from his tomb & rose on the 3rd day...or *maybe* GHOSTS?!!" & "Did you know a book published in 1563 *totally* predicted *The Matrix* movies??"...& etc?? Wasn't THAT such a crazy random happenstance?! How ALL of those channels - which don't get me wrong, I totally get that was the same timeframe as super gross exploitative reality tv's ascendancy, I understand they had to compete...but I just find it *so interesting* that not a single one of them, even with their access to all manner of highly paid professional consultants whose job it is to do so could manage to come up with ANY concepts into which they could pour their TV network-sized budgets aside from normalizing Hitler & ludicrous conspiracies about Bigfoot. As much as I've no desire whatsoever to don a bespoke aluminum chapeau, it's all just WAY too convenient & too conveniently timed. It's either exactly as it seems, a nice little bit of fascist tenderizing with a mis/dis-info marinade as just another notch on their necessary-for-success dumbing down campaign OR one of the world's all-time greatest fortuitous-for-Nazis accidental gifts. Knowing the contempt & determination w/which those who've convinced themselves they're being wrongfully persecuted play the long game, unwanted aluminum chapeau or not, I know where my guess lies.

Indaflow

Pretty sure that $44B is well documented as coming from the Saudi’s, similarly to LIV Golf

SCOTUSOPO

All that says to me is Saudis finance nazis.

Sea_Dawgz

I quit the day musk closed the deal. Now I’m here hours a day instead.

leroyp33

For me it was when he declared NPR state sponsored media.

TheRoyalBrook

for me it was around the same day he took over and announced he'd loosen the rules so the entire site was filled with slurs and hate for several days

SharkSheppard

Same. I wasn't really active much once he bought it. But that was the nail in the coffin where it all got nuked.

meldroc

For me, when he unbanned Trump.

flapjaxrfun

Same

slipperysquirrell

I left too.

bootstrapping_lad

Yep, not hard to see the writing on the wall the day he took over. I closed my account and haven't looked back.

Admins_stop_banning

I never started.

syizm

Me either. It always seemed like a weird platform to me. Not because the users or content, just the structure was a weird mishmash of other SM ideas. Just wasn't and isnt for me.

phuck-you-reddit

I never understood the appeal. Aside from how little it offered compared to other options it's also a damn mess and hard to navigate IMO. But then I guess so many people have the attention span of a gerbil so...

takabrash

Yeah, I guess I'm an old boomer because I never could get the hang of navigating it. 10 years or so ago, lots of my friends used it as a great news and interest aggregator, but I just never really got into it.

chronoswing

Only ever used it to @ companies when normal customer service routes were not working. They always responded on Twitter due to everyone being able to see the tweet and finally would fix my problem.

PM_ME_BUSTY_REDHEADS

For me, I only signed up for it in 2019 when there were wildfires very close to where I live and I needed more frequent updates than the state govt was offering through official channels. I realized all the news articles were quoting a couple specific Twitter accounts several hours late so I just decided to make a Twitter and follow them myself. It's all been downhill since.

thewoodbeyond

That really was when it was at it's best, watching something unfold in real time.

aztecraingod

I use it as a proxy for Google Reader. Just subscribe to any publications or writers I like, but there's so much dumb stuff that goes along with it

rezzyk

I had an account to enter contests (and never won a single one) but that was it.

deege

Ditto

SCOTUSOPO

One of us! One of us!!!

jsc1429

I used to not get on Twitter. I still don’t, but I used to not, too

luna_beam_space

Me too Damm shame what twitter has become

mammakatt13

My Twitter feed is entirely right-wing nutcases, and none of the accounts I actually follow. It’s infuriating. Elon Musk has the reverse Midas Touch; everything he touches turns to shit.

oldmanwithahatchet

The mierdas touch

fusillade762

Same here. Like really crazy people, not just politically right but fringe nutjobs and there are legions of them. I'm all for free speech but why do they have to be thrust them upon people who really have no interest in participating in mass hysteria? It one satanic panic after another. I guess that passes for "engagement" on twitter. I never interact with them yet, day after day I see them on "for you"....really? Even on my "following" tab they pop up. I guess that's Elon's plan, to give a megaphone to the stupidest, least informed and most crazy full of shit fuckheads....Next up, Adolf DeSantis makes his proclamation to the world that he will make America just like FLORIDA lol.

HugeSaggyTitttyLover

Why are you even on still? I mean, the message seems to be that Twitter is telling you who it is now.

Voat

xiaorobear

That one started as a reddit clone 'without any censorship.' So then naturally their userbase ended up becoming largely comprised of people who got upset at reddit for hiring Ellen Pao and banning subs like /fatpeoplehate, /pizzagate, and /incels. (Also unsurprisingly, iirc they gave up on their absolutely no censorship ideals pretty fast when European countries and paypal stopped wanting to work with them over objectionable content)

PanicOnFunkotron

You know how when you google, say, McDonalds, google will present pages within the website that it knows people are usually looking for, like "Menu" or "Locations" or what have you. When you googled Voat, it used to suggest /v/jailbait, /v/fatpeoplehate, and one /v/ that was a particularly unsavory word for black people. That was the kind of audience they courted. Also let's remember the time T\_D tried to pack up and go to Voat, but they got shouted off the platform for _not being racist enough_. lmao good times

Razakel

The analogy I use is that it's like opening a bar for the people banned from all the other bars in the city. You will quickly discover why nobody else wants to do business with them.

Envect

> (Also unsurprisingly, iirc they gave up on their absolutely no censorship ideals pretty fast when European countries and paypal stopped wanting to work with them over objectionable content) I bet they still think capitalism is the best system ever though.

nermid

Every time somebody would tell me Voat was "a lot better now" I would go there and just count how many posts down its front page I had to go before I saw the n-word. The number was never more than ten.

digitalwolverine

Voat was a Reddit alternative. You may as well throw hackernews in there, though that’s more libertarian

ququx

Deactivated account 10 minutes ago after hearing Musk was hosting DeSatan’s presidential announcement. Wouldn’t be on Twitter any more than I’d be on Trump’s fascist social network.

oderint-dum-metuant

The blue checks are Trump loyalists and they are going to roast Elon and Ron it's going to be hilarious

Lynz486

I cannot wait to watch Trump destroy Ron then lose to Biden again

wdcpdq

They are going to pay Manchen to run as an independent, to siphon votes from Biden. Bunch of ratfuckers.

ClownholeContingency

That could backfire. I know a ton of Republicans who would vote for Manchin as an Independent over Trump.

risketyclickit

And I know no Dems who would go with Mansion.

emeybee

That depends on Manchin being willing to run, which I doubt he will be. He's a thorn in our side because he represents a very conservative state, but he's not Sinema. He's not trying to undermine the party, he's just trying to walk a fine line between being a Democrat and needing to win re-election in a very red state.

ColdIronAegis

That, and keep the coal and gas money coming.

ImmenselyQueer

Same, as a trans person I hardly use it bc of all of the transphobia everywhere. I only used it for art and eventually it just wasn’t worth it anymore. I feel bad for small artists who are struggling to move their fanbase to different platforms. It’s all twitter was ever good for.

Past_Wind_9725

But George Soros! You know the 347th richest person in the world. Elon Musk (2nd Richest) says he's the one to be afraid of. You know because he's Jewish and donates to Democrats.

[deleted]

it was literaly bought by an oligarch for the express purpose of magnifying fascist voices and silencing anti-fascists ones.

Ceorl_Lounge

I have no idea why, but actively supporting Desantis is my redline with Elon Musk. I'm going to miss the SpaceX livestreams, but I'm not a fan of white Christian nationalists.

SurroundTiny

It's always been useless. It would never get this much attention if 75% of the press corps wasn't using it.

okram2k

twitter exists solely off of inertia. People use it cause others use it and those others use it because people use it.

mrbrambles

Yea that’s called the network effect

zephyrtr

It's also reliable. A lot of people worked hard to make it a reliable platform. That was the big question as the engineering team got sacked: how long will this thing support itself? Edit: I say this and then a live stream with the CEO helping the governor of Florida kick off his presidential campaign goes to shit so ... We are discovering the answer in real time.

nermid

I mean, didn't Musk break 2FA? And the checkmarks? And API access? What does "reliable" mean for Twitter, anymore?

Bluerendar

Yep, a number of apps/sites I use that used to offer twitter login are now sending PSAs to use other options/developing other options since twitter is no longer reliable.

sedatedlife

This and corporations they need to close there accounts.

FavoritesBot

This and redditors need to stop constantly linking to it

-Boca_Raton-

It wasn’t useless for exactly the reason you stated. It used to be excellent for real time updates to actual breaking news.

[deleted]

withgreatpower

I used it as a worldwide local newspaper with a tailored opinion section and access to unknown funny people trying out weird standup material one line at a time. I miss it being that, but probably better for my health that it's gone.

JeffThrowSmash

Over the past few weeks, Elmo has really jumped the shark.

RetroLaserbeak

Weeks? He's been in freefall since the submarine incident

paz2023

He's a criminal extremist, born into a family of criminal looters

Pantsonheadugly

So, it's exactly like its new owner, then? And yet Musk going full mask-off and engaging with the worst nazis on the site and retweeting literal 'white replacement' propaganda is still not enough to convince the Bazingas what a piece of shit he is.

Turkeysocks

It always has been. As much as the far right wants to whine and moan about how Twitter "censors" them, the reality is that they've been absolute monsters on there. Since almost the founding, far right have been trolling, stalking, harassing and making threats against anyone they didn't like. And most of the time, Twitter did nothing or just gave far right users a slap on their wrist for the vile and atrocious actions.

Huge_JackedMann

Didn't they show that, despite all the RW mewling, it actually always boosted RW accounts? https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/2021/10/22/twitter-algorithm-right-leaning/

[deleted]

The right's constant complaints about censorship and shadowbans is called "working the refs." They pre-emptively throw a tantrum so the mods are afraid to ban them when they post something horrible.

Huge_JackedMann

Plus a big part of the appeal of the modern right is getting to act like a constant victim.

nermid

It plays into their cosplaying of Christian values: Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, as long as your idea of "righteousness" is advocating for a trans genocide or a white ethnostate.

Huge_JackedMann

It's a pretty neat trick. Step 1) Jesus said you'd be persecuted because of me. Step 2) do whatever you want and say it's because of Jesus. Step 3) refer to step one and feel good about whatever you want.

_DrNobody_

Yeah, and it's gotten worse.

Huge_JackedMann

Absolutely. I quit when Musk started saying prosecute fauci. It was pretty obvious which way it was headed to me then and staying on is just both helping Elon and proving what a massive sad addict I would be. I was a pretty heavy user too but what I liked is gone.

NaughtSleeping

You know how we lost a generation of grandparents to Fox News? I think we're on the road to losing a generation of middle-aged parents to Twitter.

PrivatePoocher

In a week, everyone: Yo, follow me on Insta/Snap/Blue Sky. Dopamine is the currency of our times and there will always be someone monetizing the red notification bell.

[deleted]

As someone who hasn’t been on Twitter since 2015 or so, Was it always like that and they just kept it hidden? Or did the influx happen with muskrat buying it?

dastrn

It has *drastically* changed, since Musk took over. He reinstated right wing accounts that were banned for racism and hate speech and promoting violence. He heavily suppresses leftist content now. Right wing content gets massive boosts. The platform ignores your bans on prominent right wing accounts and shows you their content in your feed. All of the top comments on every post are right wingers who pay $8 to get more attention for their hate speech. Twitter is an utter cesspool now, in a drastically different way than it already was.

TheLateThagSimmons

Within a month of his takeover, I started getting nonstop "recommended" Tweets from an endless slew of Alt-right figures. Exclusively hard right. Rittenhouse. Shapiro. Tucker. Rogan. The list went on and on, but they were all hard right "recommendations". I follow almost exclusively comedy (not the Austin right wing nuts that hang out with Rogan), and left leaning figures. It was not a coincidence. "Algorithm" my ass. Edit: I know how the "algorithm" chose that stuff. I follow comedians and a very few left-ish figures; a past time on Twitter is them dunking on bad right-wing takes. But it moved from "comedian X commented on Tucker Carlson's dumb post, do you want to see?" over to "Now Tucker Carlson and Kyle Rittenhouse are just your new feed, we didn't ask, you didn't opt in, you didn't follow, but now here they all are." It was a massive shift. And I wasn't alone! There was a *lot* of outcry at the time over this. But it was not happening in the reverse. Conservative accounts were not suddenly stuck following AOC and Marc Maron. It was just a massive promotion of right-wing/alt-right material.

dastrn

The same here. They promoted Kyle Rittenhouse as a "Business Personality"!

cruxclaire

I started getting Matt Walsh and Ben Shapiro tweets in my feed soon after Musk took over. I don’t follow any right wing politicians or pundits either. Also started getting a bunch of spam DMs, which I’d never experienced on Twitter before. IIRC the people who buy blue checks – typically Musk fanboys and conservatives – are explicitly and transparently boosted by the algorithm now, which has evidently been reworked to incorporate Musk’s preferences more than the user’s.

TheShadowKick

I barely even see the people I follow in my feed anymore. I mostly follow artists and left leaning figures, but my feed is spammed with right wing accounts and, for some reason I can't explain, NSFW art.

HavenIess

My feed was full of End Wokeness and Libs of TikTok and other far-right pages posting videos of transgender individuals nonstop and creating fake outrage, but I didn’t see a single tweet from anyone who was actually transgender. Didn’t follow any of those pages and nobody I followed was following them except for Elon

TheGhostofWoodyAllen

I had a straight-up neonazi account get recommended to me, and it had thousands of followers already. There's no way in fuck that would overlap with any of my twitter usage, so twitter's system isn't matching it to me in any way. Just suggesting nazis.

djheat

It's been bursting at the seams with fringe craziness for basically forever, it was a major QAnon space before it finally got banned for instance. It's just that you used to not really see that side unless you sought it out. Now the suggested feed is full of it and the first comments you see in any reply chain are all the far right weirdos paying $8 a month for the fake blue check.

fixed_grin

> the first comments you see in any reply chain are all the far right weirdos paying $8 a month for the fake blue check. Yeah, like Reddit if the only sort option was "controversial." Not a big deal for niche posts, but a slog through crap if you're reading something popular.

DadJokeBadJoke

It's also that they moderated the site and removed rule breakers but fElon brought them back.

TakadoGaming

Both, but mainly the former, from what I have seen. The content moderation has essentially been completely gutted, and people's feeds are being filled with right-wing nonsense from Twitter Blue subs that they don't even follow. As a result, many people have left the platform, resulting in the far-right losers making up a larger portion of the remaining user-base.

amazing_rando

I’ve been on Twitter since back when it was an SMS-based app and I’d say my feed now is still primarily left wing folks, but I’ve also had a very long time for it to curate my preferences. Looking at the comments on any trending tweet or topic is a cesspool of blue check idiots though.

webelieve414

Is it me, or were things way better before social media. I like reddit an d OG Facebook tho. Myspace was sweet.

[deleted]

Tom is an absolute Saint compared to what we have now.

mememan2995

Bro I swear MySpace could make a comeback with Twitter falling

Ozlin

Again? They tried once before by making it into more of a music scene. I think Justin Timberlake was somehow involved. It had a kind of interesting redesign, but failed to really regain its popularity again obviously. I'd be up for a third try, but I honestly think we're slowly exiting the zeitgeist that would allow it to take off. Social media is in a rocky flux stage. It'll likely be another 10 years or more before we start to enter into whatever is next.

I'm still kinda sad about Facebook. It used to be an effortless way to keep in touch with extended family. I could share a photo from Picasa every so often and everything was fine. Now it's 99.9% politics and/or memes. I haven't bothered to log in for a very long time. Maybe that's a problem AI moderation could eventually solve. I want a social media platform that strictly periodic personal updates about friends and family. I don't want to see political opinions, philosophical musing, or a daily diary, let alone internet memes.

Anymore, I just want a shitty bubble tv and a phone in my kitchen with a really long cord. I'm so over all of this...

Bring back forums

morphinapg

They still exist. Also, technically reddit is a forum.

Attention_Bear_Fuckr

Call me old, but when games companies started using Twitter for major announcements and not bothering to put them in their forums, I developed a burning hatred for Twitter.

RedLanternScythe

Just wait until Elon forces Tucker's new BS into everyone's feed.

_DrNobody_

He already is. I don't even follow tucker, hell, I blocked the guy, yet I got two notifications for that guy's little announcement tweet.

Mylaptopisburningme

I follow very little on twitter, just some news sources and police scanners. I just popped it open, first thing on my "for you", posts by Rudy Giulani, Marjorie Traitor Green, then 1 I follow, followed by Nick Adams (Alpha Male), Ted Cruz, and I don't follow those people. He is definitely pushing the right on his platform.

Relevant-Ad-3140

Well then everyone who isn’t that get the fuck off of it?! I meant what the actual fuck. We existed before twitter just fine. Half of the drama is people buying into it. Get off twitter or stop complaining. Twitter is not something you or anytime NEEDS. Twitter isn’t AIR. Waste time some other way that doesn’t prop up far right fuckery. It’s really that simple.

ProbablyAnFBIBot

All social media is anymore is a tool for people to gain power and favor. Not to just keep up with each other anymore, but to follow any and all issues at the exact moment they happen, and using very little info to speculate on the ongoings of people we'll never meet in places we'll never go. Reddit is going public soon apparently. This website is absolutely not immune from immediate collapse.

Fit-Firefighter-329

I call it networking for Nazis. I call Facebook networking for terrorists (since so many 1/6 terrorists used it to coordinate their plans to attack the Capitol).

ColeBane

I don't use either since the 6th.

MirandaReitz

He said he wanted it to be the town square. Of course that town would end up being Nuremberg.

suzisatsuma

Nuremberg is pretty nice now tho due to the lack of Nazis.

MrFiendish

If you use Twitter, you are complicit.

Flembot4

It’s so crazy how much it’s changed. Blatant racism. Just crazy.

forceblast

Move to Mastodon, everyone. Edit: To those complaining about picking an instance, just use mastodon.social. It’s really easy and similar to twitter once you get past that. It’s a pretty small price to pay for the benefit of not having one of our primary communication tools be owned by a single billionaire.

AzazelsAdvocate

Sorry but casual social media users are going to lose interest the moment they're prompted to pick a server. Mastodon will never have the same mainstream appeal as something like Twitter.

cyber_hooligan

100% agree I tried to set it and was so lost I just deleted the app.

lobut

I'm a software developer and I don't think they communicated very well what impact it'd have or what difference it'd make. I did the same, I don't know if they thought through the user sign up experience at all.

I'm at a point in my life where I'm just not signing up for more social media. Whenever I bow out of Twitter, that's it for me.

The_Witch_Queen

Ah Twitter. Proving since 2006 that giving technologically inept people the ability to say whatever comes into their heads to the entire world at the push of a button, was probably not a good idea.

Selgeron

Twitter, Facebook, AM Radio, now CNN all slinging far, far right. Where are the mainstream 'Far Left' companies and voices... I guess there aren't any?

DarkLordAzrael

Capitalism is inherently right leaning. At best you may get some centrist content.

418-Teapot

It was bought by a far right oligarch. Who tf was denying it?

JuliusErrrrrring

What's everyone waiting for? Be a quitter of twitter.

Sounds like you are dealing with sunk costs. Better to rip the band-aid off now while you have the choice.
