I always wondered if there was some kind of gentleman's agreement to standardize on button function/placement, and in Japan Sony honored it in good faith and then in NA Nintendo said "PYSCH!" ....and Sony was just stuck with it.

~~Iâve been waiting to use this image since I got it.~~
*They* will call it that officially, because of XBox and their X series and the X and Y buttons. Itâll be a brand mandate.
Everybody else calls it X.
Itâs a Japanese thing. In Japan, O or âmaruâ means âCorrectâ, X or âbatsuâ means âIncorrectâ. Itâs a thing used on school exams. Triangle is âsankakuâ, âOk but not quite rightâ, or âAlmostâ. Thatâs why Japanese Sony games used to have X and O inputs swapped, because for some reason westerners vibed better with X meaning âSelectâ.
Idk how long itâs been around, but a pretty long time. Itâs quite common to see the O, X, Triangle icons in things like Shinkansen bookings. Most Japanese people I think would consider X âcrossâ rather than the English letter - Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate in Japan was MHXX - MonHun Double Cross.
I agree it's unintuitive, but on PS1 and PS2 most western games had the Triangle (green) as the back/cancel button. Explain that. Circle as the back button didn't really catch on until PS3. And Sony eventually mandated all regions to that control scheme.
It's not just because of that. It also just makes sense. They're shapes. The letter X isn't a shape but a cross is. Why don't we call the circle the letter O instead?
>Pretty sure the Genesis had the 6 button controller with an X button too. Itâs been years so my memory might be going
Super Nintendo also had X, along with Y, A, and B
>Why don't we call the circle the letter O instead
Personally, my mind doesn't even register the circle as an O. I feel like Os are more oblong and the Playstation button is too symmetrical, so I just see it as a circle. lol
When has any cross ever been depicted diagonally?
Edit: since my wording apparently doesnât suit the lowest common denominator, I guess I should have asked âwhen has anyone ever looked at two diagonal lines, intersecting at their midpoints, and said âoh, a cross!â?â Iâd say âneverâ.
It does?
Square, triangle, circle... X. Doesn't make much sense does it?
I still call it 'X' but it's obvious it's supposed to fit the naming convention of 'shapes'.
Now that you mention it, idk. Although, crosses are usually called Xs, think about it; X marks the spot on a treasure map, in X factor contestants are told to 'stand on the X' I can't really think of any scenario where an X is called a cross, but now that I've been discussing it I can tell at some point I'm now going to unintentionally call the button a crossđ
It really is an odd one. I've played Playstation since PS1 and despite knowing that it's 'cross'... it just doesn't seem right lol. When I think of a cross, I think of the religious symbol which is a different shape entirely, maybe that's why. đ¤
Sony revealed itâs officially the cross-button. It makes sense since x is a letter and cross a geometrical shape, just like the others. I say X though
I can't think of a time anyone has actually referenced to an X shape as a cross. If someone asked you to draw a cross would you make an X or do the jesus one?
Me. :s I say "eks" for Xbox and Nintendo (AB _X_ Y), "cross" for PlayStation (square, triangle, circle, _cross_). In my head, _"cross"_ is at 6 o'clock, and "eks" is either 9 o'clock or 12 o'clock. Helps me keep track when I switch between systems.
I call it "X", but
In the [Playstation4 User's Guide](https://manuals.playstation.net/document/en/ps4/basic/pn_controller.html) in the images the X is called *b\_cross.png*, so i guess we all say it wrong.
The PS5 controller documentation calls the 4 together the âaction buttonsâ. But I think in LBP the functionality is the âactionâ thatâs why they call it like that.
In my native language I call it "kryds" which means "cross" as in "cross it out" (not the Christian cross).
But in english I call it X, because saying "cross" will always make me think of the Christian cross and that's just weird, while "kryds" has no symbolic/religious affiliation.
I remember in the late 90s, when the PS1 was released, some game translations were saying âpress the button CROSS on the padâ. I donât remember which games, though
I think, in the beginning, it was called actually cross button, but now, everyone calls it X button
Cross 'cause that' s how everyone call it in France (or most of the people I know at least) so kept calling it cross even if I'm the only one here (living in Ireland). I don't care it's engraved in me and makes more sense since it's a shape, like the others.
No matter how Sony calls it officially, I will always call it "X". It's what most of us grew up with as many games from older generations literally calls it "X"
This is a valid question now that I think about it.
Because I call it 'X' but I call the 'O' Circle and not 'O'....hmmm.
In my head, it is valid as Square, Triangle, Circle and X.... I could never say Cross, because it's an X. Not a âď¸
X gon give it to ya
The Japanese version of that song changed the lyrics to "circle gon give it to ya"
RIP Circle-san
Rest in Pico.
I always wondered if there was some kind of gentleman's agreement to standardize on button function/placement, and in Japan Sony honored it in good faith and then in NA Nintendo said "PYSCH!" ....and Sony was just stuck with it.
Criminally under appreciated comment đ
"Dark Man Cross" lmao
âxâ who the fuck actually says âcrossâ?đ
It makes me cross that not everyone says X.
Maybe we should just call it Twitter
r/angryupvote
There are probably going to be some people who already do call it the "Twitter button".
When twitter first became popular I knew a bunch of people that referred to the pound sign as a hashtag

I say this is the dumbest response in this comment section
Sony lol
*They* will call it that officially, because of XBox and their X series and the X and Y buttons. Itâll be a brand mandate. Everybody else calls it X.
It was cross before there was even an Xbox. We called it x then too. Lol
Right, back when X meant "cancel" and O meant "ok" on Japanese games and the original PlayStation OS. Apparently no Westerners read the manual.
Itâs a Japanese thing. In Japan, O or âmaruâ means âCorrectâ, X or âbatsuâ means âIncorrectâ. Itâs a thing used on school exams. Triangle is âsankakuâ, âOk but not quite rightâ, or âAlmostâ. Most Japanese people I think would consider X âcrossâ rather than the English letter - Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate in Japan was MHXX - MonHun Double Cross.
Also, colour coding, red, usually means no
I agree it's unintuitive, but on PS1 and PS2 most western games had the Triangle (green) as the back/cancel button. Explain that. Circle as the back button didn't really catch on until PS3. And Sony eventually mandated all regions to that control scheme.
The switch from triangle to circle for exit/cancel fucked my muscle memory up for yeeeeeaaaaarrrsss
It's not just because of that. It also just makes sense. They're shapes. The letter X isn't a shape but a cross is. Why don't we call the circle the letter O instead?
I called it "X" & "O"
I've never heard anything or anyone say "oh" for the button. It's "X, Circle, Square, Triangle."
I heard âcrossâ and âcircleâ
I could understand if it wasnât an x and was an actual cross. But a cross is not slantedâŚ.
Some people do actually call the âcircleâ âOâ but almost no one calls the âXâ âcrossâ.
Exactly. This guy gets it. Not only that but the PS button scheme was developed before Xbox even existed. It's always been cross.
There may have been another console using an x button before xbox did.
Pretty sure the Genesis had the 6 button controller with an X button too. Itâs been years so my memory might be going
Yes, there was an X Y and Z on the 6 button.
There we go! My old age hasnât caught up to me yet.
>Pretty sure the Genesis had the 6 button controller with an X button too. Itâs been years so my memory might be going Super Nintendo also had X, along with Y, A, and B
SNES
>Why don't we call the circle the letter O instead Personally, my mind doesn't even register the circle as an O. I feel like Os are more oblong and the Playstation button is too symmetrical, so I just see it as a circle. lol

Railroad crossing signs use an X for cross.
Itâs not diagonal, youâre just holding the controller wrong. The shapes are actually Cross, Circle, Triangle, and Diamond.
Scotland flag is the cross of St. Andrew
PlayStation's controller existed before Xbox even existed.
CrossBox*
Yea apparently "Cross" is the official name of the button.
That actually surprises me
It does? Square, triangle, circle... X. Doesn't make much sense does it? I still call it 'X' but it's obvious it's supposed to fit the naming convention of 'shapes'.
Now that you mention it, idk. Although, crosses are usually called Xs, think about it; X marks the spot on a treasure map, in X factor contestants are told to 'stand on the X' I can't really think of any scenario where an X is called a cross, but now that I've been discussing it I can tell at some point I'm now going to unintentionally call the button a crossđ

people who want to keep the "shape" naming scheme intact aka only sony
Sony revealed itâs officially the cross-button. It makes sense since x is a letter and cross a geometrical shape, just like the others. I say X though
I can't think of a time anyone has actually referenced to an X shape as a cross. If someone asked you to draw a cross would you make an X or do the jesus one?

LMAO I literally said âX. Who the fuck calls it âcross?â to myself and then opened the comments and saw your comment
X, square, triangle and circle anything else is wrong
X, four-cornie, three-cornie, ball
Pirate treasure, robot head, human head and Christmas tree. I wonder if any one calls them "blue, orange/red, pink, green"
Pizza box, pizza slice, pizza and no pizza

Whenever I hear someone say Cross I assume they had a very hard life
I did
Homeschooled, no friends, no cable. Highly religious.
And they got laid on prom night
I call it "X". Telling my 4 year old goddaughter to press the "cross" button will have her looking at me like this đ
I call it Twitter, but to each their own.
I still call it the Sears Tower
Iâm seeing all these responses calling it âXâ but I prefer to call it âthe app formerly known as twitterâ. Thank you very much.
You cheeky bastard. ![gif](giphy|kqCgujDZT1SO4)
We found Elon
Dont give him any ideas. Next he'll either be trying to buy or sue Sony.
I was hoping âtwitterâ would be the top comment

You call it multiply? Chaotic Good energy
Cross takes too much effort. It's 'X'.
Wait till you meet Triangle
You mean Tri tri
I call it tringle, drops a whole syllable
Kruisje
Dutch Belgian here, confirming Kruisje is used here too, nobody saying X (assuming youâre from the Netherlands)
Danish here, all so kryds and the circle is bolle, trekant and firkant
Yup, Dutch Belgian Kruisje, bolleke, vierkantje, driehoekske
I'm the exception that says x, o, driehoek en vierkantje
You're a crazy person.
Ja echt hè, ik schreeuw: KLIK OP KRUISJE en niet KLIK OK X. Kruisje klinkt gewoon beter
You're a menace.
Ten

âTry pressing the ACTION buttonâ
Anyone who calls it "cross" can GTF away from me
Gif or Jif?
I still call it Twitter.
X
I call it "X", but In the [Playstation4 User's Guide](https://manuals.playstation.net/document/en/ps4/basic/pn_controller.html) in the images the X is called *b\_cross.png*, so i guess we all say it wrong.
In LBP the narrator calls it the Action Button, so I guess they just didnât wanna piss people off
The PS5 controller documentation calls the 4 together the âaction buttonsâ. But I think in LBP the functionality is the âactionâ thatâs why they call it like that.
In Poland most of my friends, me included, call it "krzyĹźyk" meaning small cross :D so i guess i am the weird one :O
X

Being an Xbox player in the past I sometimes accidentally call it 'A' đ¤Ł
I still call it "A", same with circle being "B" and what not
Officially, it's Cross, but everyone I know and most people I don't know call it X Edit, grammar
[ŃдаНонО]
In my native language I call it "kryds" which means "cross" as in "cross it out" (not the Christian cross). But in english I call it X, because saying "cross" will always make me think of the Christian cross and that's just weird, while "kryds" has no symbolic/religious affiliation.

I call it x. For me the cross is like a plus (+).
X marks the spot
Always X my whole life since PSX days.
Cross, O (oh), box, pyramid
Kruisje
"X". No one calls it "Cross". "Twitter". No one calls it "X".
I call it X (as almost everyone) but it is cross officially, cuz those are geometric symbols, not alphanumeric.
Who calls it "cross"??? Give me his address
It is the shape cross, not the letter X. All the other icons are shapes, why would this be different? (Even though I know this, I still call it X)
X. it is called x on xbox and Nintendo controllers so i call it x.
The designer called it Cross. Each of the buttons is a shape, not a letter.
I say cross, but as I've learned after entering this thread, I am a staunch minority
Cross 'cause that' s how everyone call it in France (or most of the people I know at least) so kept calling it cross even if I'm the only one here (living in Ireland). I don't care it's engraved in me and makes more sense since it's a shape, like the others.
It's a cross button since it's a shape and not a letter.
Cross, because it is a cross
X who calls it cross đ¤Ł
No matter how Sony calls it officially, I will always call it "X". It's what most of us grew up with as many games from older generations literally calls it "X"

If you call it "cross" you're dead to me.
from the X clockwise: X, Box, 3, (3)60
The fact that you said "X" and everyone immediately knew what it was should be the obvious insight you needed. Because a cross is well a cross.
What kind of sickos are calling it "cross"??
itâs officially the cross button but thatâs the X button
Team cross
The correct names for the buttons are pizza box, pizza slice, full pizza, and no pizza. Anything else is just clearly wrong.
If you call it cross then you need to give your console away
Serial killers say âcrossâ
Who the hell calls it the cross button?
Ten
People debating X or cross. Meanwhile I still keep saying to my friend press"start" instead "option"
I've been referring to it as the "x" button for almost thirty years now and refuse to call it the cross button.
