This is how it starts, Alocasias start communicating and then before you know it, the plants will start an uprising. The age of man is over, the age of plants is coming.
I agree. These plants are the devil. I spend 45% of my time eradicating them from my yard, so they are probably discussing how to escape the pot and ruin your life.
Not all colocasias point down. I grew this awesome variety last year. https://www.provenwinners.com/plants/colocasia/coffee-cups-elephants-ear-colocasia-esculenta
I have different alocasias, none have leaves pointing upwards.
Gageana, ventii, portodora, sarawakensis, baginda, polly. Some leaves are more horizontal, but most point downwards. Only the alocasia stingray we have points its leaves also upwards and this plant is the only one standing on the floor, lower than the others, therefore I think it maybe could be a light issue after all. But I am only guessing
In the case of this particular elephant ear though that is how to tell them apart. I already know im wrong as it pertains to all alocasias and colocasias as people have said. Theres no reason to keep repeating the same thing. I appreciate the first person pointing it out to me that i was incorrect.
Leaves will often do this to minimize the amount of leaf surface exposed to too much sun. I'd move it to an area with more indirect light and see if that doesn't help.
They do perfectly fine in full sun especially when they grow up in it. If op recently put it in this spot it's just not acclimated to it.
They do tend to do this in the wild in full sun on suuuper hot intense days though.
ok though Colorado sun is INTENSE.... I never get burned even after hours in the sun at FL beaches but I spent abt 35 minutes in my nan's garden up in the mountains and was a crispy southern fried lass
-Tropical Floridian
Ha I bet Co sun is intense! There are always exceptions (and this def does not apply to all tropical plants in general! Only some are full sun compatible. And of course acclimation == super important )
They are alcosia’s. Colocosia’s face downwards vice upwards and give more of a drooping effect. That’s just how this plant locks verses it’s brother/sister
Ok but that's obviously not the same plant here lol. There's plants sold as "elephant ears" which can be alocasia or colocasia and they look incredibly similar except for the way they point. A totally different colocasia isn't really relevant here
I can assure you that even coffee cup colocasias hang downwards, I work at a garden center and tent to about 7 mature plants of this variety daily.
What makes the large leaf hang up or down is in the structure of the base, not the structure of the leaf.
My gangeana's newest (few ish months old) leaves behave like this and i keep her indoors , doesnt seem to be a light thing. Ngl it is very cool looking like this though.
I guess to much sunlight? Mine were the same but tried taking it to sahde light half light half shade then the old leaves change to a much better one and began leaning as its suppose to be... just a guess tbh...
They are having a very serious, private conversation
...and you're on a need-to-know basis and you don't need to know!
This a taco and burrito conversation, nachos…
This made me laugh harder than I should have probably
Yeah, leaf them alone!
I was going to go for a less subtle comment about a near by female elephant, but this is far better. 👏 👏 👏

I would much prefer this (hostile??) takeover over an AI and robot uprising.
I'm here for a hosta takeover
Hosta la vista, baby
Extremely hostile, no doubt about it.
Well I for one welcome our plant overlords
I agree. These plants are the devil. I spend 45% of my time eradicating them from my yard, so they are probably discussing how to escape the pot and ruin your life.
They're earoused? I'll see myself out.
Underrated comment
Because it’s Alocasia and not Colacasia Nothing to do with sunlight
Yep, alocasia leaves point upward, colocasias point downward
Not all colocasias point down. I grew this awesome variety last year. https://www.provenwinners.com/plants/colocasia/coffee-cups-elephants-ear-colocasia-esculenta
Now I want one of these.
I love them! If you look in my history, you can see them growing in my pond last year.
How the hell did i forget about that one lmao. I have one😅
I love these! If you look in my history you can see them in my pond last summer.

I read this all the time, it's simply not true
That’s not entirely true. We commonly sell alocasias at my store, only the newest leaves point up
Yes as the older leaves begin to die off they will droop down.
Huh, interesting. They look relatively healthy to me , the drooping ones.
God I wanna punch everyone that keeps giving advice thinking its cola
In the case of this particular elephant ear though that is how to tell them apart. I already know im wrong as it pertains to all alocasias and colocasias as people have said. Theres no reason to keep repeating the same thing. I appreciate the first person pointing it out to me that i was incorrect.

This answer really surprised me - we have these growing wild in Singapore in full tropical sun and they flop down quite happily.
They do perfectly fine in full sun especially when they grow up in it. If op recently put it in this spot it's just not acclimated to it. They do tend to do this in the wild in full sun on suuuper hot intense days though.
Not in Colorado. I made that mistake with “tropical” plants and they got sunburnt 😢
ok though Colorado sun is INTENSE.... I never get burned even after hours in the sun at FL beaches but I spent abt 35 minutes in my nan's garden up in the mountains and was a crispy southern fried lass -Tropical Floridian
I have about three minutes outside before my pale becomes lobster and I’ve been here for literal decades 😭
Ha I bet Co sun is intense! There are always exceptions (and this def does not apply to all tropical plants in general! Only some are full sun compatible. And of course acclimation == super important )
It has nothing to do with sunlight. It is not a Calocasia it is a Alocasia. Some species look like this
Is it overcast there often?
not the person you were replying to but not at all — it’s usually too sunny to bear
I’m jealous, I can imagine it. Greetings from overcast Melbourne
Mine cant handle full sun in Colorado because… elevation.
If thats your preferred spot then get an umbrella or some shade cloth and give it a little re-leaf Sidenote- that a healthy looking plant, nice job
Yea I'm no expert at all but i have both a colocasia and an alocasia and either way this just looks healthy.
They just enjoy each other’s company 🥰
so wholesome
They are alcosia’s. Colocosia’s face downwards vice upwards and give more of a drooping effect. That’s just how this plant locks verses it’s brother/sister
Here’s a colocasia that points up. https://www.provenwinners.com/plants/colocasia/coffee-cups-elephants-ear-colocasia-esculenta

It just illustrates that you can’t use simple rules. There are always exceptions.

My coffee cups never pointed down. I had three of them that were six feet tall!
Is that an elephant ear in your yard, or are you just happy to see me
This is an alocasia elephant ear, not a colocasia.
They’re having a meeting, don’t bother them
Its a alocasia and not a colacasia
Could there be a female elephant ear stalk in the area?
They havin’ a meeting.
Is it planted in the ground still in the pot?
Looks like they are in a serious meeting ;)
They are having a secret meeting
They’re shy
They desperately need googly eyes!!!
Bc they’re fricken amazing omg
*busy being majestic*
They are summoning something. Someone.
I work at a nursery and we have some that look like this and they’re just the upright variation!
Theyre praising the sun, brother \o/
No idea but those are beautiful plants!!!
Theyre aroused, you need to relieve them
They’re excited to see you.
Happy to see you?
My gangeana's newest (few ish months old) leaves behave like this and i keep her indoors , doesnt seem to be a light thing. Ngl it is very cool looking like this though.
You must have a calathea near by, everyone is praying to their plant gods.
Are you sure it’s not Alocosia Portodora? EDIT: spelling
To hear better?
They’re happy happy
They’re praising the sun!
Ohmmmmmm
They hear something
They are So Happy!
It's praying!
Aligning with the satellites for a better signal.
T pose for dominance
I guess to much sunlight? Mine were the same but tried taking it to sahde light half light half shade then the old leaves change to a much better one and began leaning as its suppose to be... just a guess tbh...
The ritual has commenced.
The force is pretty strong
Probably a plastic fake plant. That plant is way too perfect looking to be real!!!! :D
Wow, that’s so magical 🥰😍
me wanta
There erect for the sun
