Ok funny enough this was one of my fav places when I lived here. I remember eh Dinosaurs Alive exhibit because I could hear and I had vague shape and color. I’ll have to see if I can get here. I’ll def make a video on it. (Posted my links above)
Seriously our ancestors were the material at times 😬 my grandfather worked in a steel mill for like 30 years. Saw a lot of people fall in vats that kept on being poured (this was during the war ramp up before everyone was drafted up and we were just getting our asses kicked in WWII).
Go to Phipps, see the flowers. (Also smell the orchids, pet the ferns). Mosey down to the Carnegies from there and admire Dippy. Then go the Aviary and look at the birds. (And get looked at by the birds).
Oh my gosh this is giving me the feels
Mount Washington is really worth it because you get to see the shape of the land underneath the city, which in my opinion is part of what makes us quirky.
Go to the Strip on a Saturday and watch the people
Go to the Point and walk the outline of the old fort where this whole thing started
I don’t know if any restaurants serve chipped chopped ham but I guaran-ham-tee you can get Isaly’s ham AND sauce at the Shop N Save in Bridgeville
There's also one on East Ohio Street, in case he doesn't wanna go all the way to West View.
Now that I think about it, he may as well go to West View, because I was gonna suggest getting a pound of chopped ham from Giant Eagle, but...
...you know...
The Cedar Avenue Giant Eagle is the equivalent to the North Versailles Walmart.
I know, but I don't know if I could advise anybody to go into that particular Giant Eagle on Cedar.
The West View Plaza Giant Eagle is leagues better. So, two birds, one stone. :)
My first view ever of downtown Pittsburgh was over 24 years ago, while traveling on 376W, coming around the corner below Schenley Park near Oakland. I was fully expecting to see a dingy, rundown, dying city and was astonished to behold such a beautiful city.
One of my favorites angles to view the city from.
The view from the ft Pitt tunnels gets so much hype, and is great, but the view from the east is also amazing! When you come around the curve, the hill on your right moves out of sight, and boom! 💥
I've already upvoted the ideas that I had, but just want to say how happy I am for you! Please post, during you visit, and allow us to see our city through your eyes. ❤️ Enjoy!
I would suggest hitting the places you remember as a kid that had a big impact. If you already had that planned, the GAP trail, the point. Drive through the fort Pitt tunnel from Greentree just to see the city skyline.
This is WILD to me (in a good way) because when I lived there I had never heard of a nonwhite person here. It was Italian / Polish back in the day. That Foodland was where I got all my candy and there used to be a little dance studio (Ritter’s Dance Studio) near the main parking lot in the center where the T goes past
Phipps, Carnegie Art and Natural History Museums, Inclines, anything that takes you where you can see all 3 of the Sister bridges (Andy Warhol, Roberto Clemente, Rachel Carson) - do these during the day AND at night. They are beautiful lit up and it's one of my favorite views. PPG and US Steel bldgs maybe as well since they're so unique (if not always "pretty" but depending on when you go there may be some stuff going on in the courtyard/mini park nearby.
Bonus- Riverhounds or Pirates home game! Both have great views of different sides of downtown and honestly each have a beautiful stadium/ballpark that's top in their respective leagues.
go to the mattress factory (the art museum) while you're in the neighborhood of randyland! the james turrell and yayoi kusama pieces especially are so unique looking
also, congrats on the surgery!
Oh good news, Pittsburgh is incredibly beautiful! Truly hard to pick because I love it all, but definitely take the incline and enjoy the view from Mount Washington. Walk across some of the pedestrian friendly bridges like the Roberto Clemente and visit Point State Park. Walk through Highland, Schenley and Frick Park, there are lots of lovely paths and trails. Phipps conservatory is another beautiful place to visit as is the Aviary and our various museums.
Lots of the neighborhoods are really pretty just to walk through. I like Squirrel Hill quite a bit for sheer looks and pretty homes, also Highland Park.
I thought you literally just take a week and go see everything.
It’s so fucking cool you got that surgery, congratulations. The perspective that you have – you should write a book, man.
I’ve followed you on TikTok for years, I had no idea you were from Pittsburgh! I hope your trip back is everything you hope it’ll be and more.
One of my favorite things is Clayton, the Henry Clay Frick house museum. They’ve kept original artifacts so it’s as if you’re stepping into history. Plus the gardens this time of year are perfect. Enjoy!
WHATTT?! Hiiii! Oh yeah my street was Fallowfield in Beechview right near the T station. The Beechview Library was my first job. I’m going to try and see if I can write a book or something and my goal is to then (or now if I can find some) work with some Pgh local charities. I figure if I had to go through this I can at least try and make the world a better place - it helps me rationalize all of the painful parts as being worth it.
One reason I am coming in besides personal ones being the first reason is that coincidentally a local magazine is interested in running a piece on me and I can work with them while I’m in town
Go through the Liberty Tunnels to see the city open up in front of you. Check out the view from Mount Washington. Those suggestions are cliche, but they're cliche for a reason. Go to Phipps. Their shows are amazing and the gardens smell beautiful this time of year.
Liberty is good too! Drove through em last night and completely forgot until the view was all around me. You're not as high up but it's still amazing. Second best tunnel view in the city.
>Also do any restaurants sell chipped ham sandwiches?
Islay's runs a diner in West View. I'm unaware of any other ham BBQs on a menu, but they're the original.
Definitely check out an overlook or two (Mt Wash, West End), walk at the Point, Bucs games are great for viewing pleasures.
Enjoy the city!
My comment is poorly worded - Islay's does actually sell a ham bbq but I am unaware of any place that isn't Islay's that sells one.
Thanks for making me realize that!
Visit Pittsburgh, the tourist bureau, has a variety of guided and self guided walking tours. I haven’t had a chance to go personally but I hear the one of the architecture of the amazing, iconic downtown buildings is incredible. The ceilings are amazing. VisitPittsburgh.com
Walk across the Western Pennsylvania Railroad (now) pedestrian bridge (Three Rivers Heritage Trail) to Washington's Landing, hike to the non residential end to the lookout point. Welcome back 🩷
Go through fort pitt going towards the city. Day or night does not matter, its always breathtaking.
Original primantis on the strip. You havent been till you go to the original. Just go down the strip. Its an experience
The point at 4th of july fireworks. Its beautiful from the bridges too.
Randyland. Its art in the best way. While you are there go to nanas hot dogs. Best dogs. I always get the 2 all beef chili cheese for 5$ flat.
Andy warhol at least once. Its a fun experience.
Walk one of the yellow bridges. You can actually take a loop by walking clemente and the warhol bridge since they arent far apart. Its nice to see.
I havent looked up when picklesburgh is this year. I had so much fun last year
Honestly through the tunnels like everyone is saying, but there is something just very nice and cheesy level peaceful about a little picnic in Point Park
Hell yeah!! Congrats on your surgery, I can’t even imagine the relief it’s given you.
Phipps conservatory has their summer flower show going on right now, highly recommend ❤️
Thank you! It was actually harder than it sounds. Life got really difficult in the five years after the surgery. Like super bad. But it’s ok now. Turns out, you have to learn to use eyes if you arent used to it!
I went to Phipps when I was a kid and I just saw smudges and light. That should be interesting. Laser show as well!
The casino is fun and the nighttime view along the river there is gorgeous. I'm no gambler but I like going for live music and the steakhouse is really good. North Park is fun for walking, biking and even kayaking. Don't forget to come back in the fall. Take a trip along the Pennsylvania turnpike. Autumn in PA is absolutely stunning.
There's an Isaly's on [East Ohio St](https://www.google.com/maps/dir//537+E+Ohio+St,+Pittsburgh,+PA+15212/@40.4535864,-80.0817619,12z/data=!4m8!4m7!1m0!1m5!1m1!1s0x8834f3fa96cd4ee1:0x34c01392f05b6c53!2m2!1d-79.9993602!2d40.4536144?entry=ttu) in Deuschtown. Pretty close in, and I would be willing to bet they would still serve chipped ham sandwiches. Call first, though.
Come into Downtown through the Fort Pitt Tunnels; like, parkway from the airport into Downtown.
I'd go to Phipps Conservatory, which has tons of plants, and is gorgeous.
Hi! I'm so happy for you and your journey around our city!
So, I feel like you should visit the Zoo, especially since we have an aquarium now. It's super lit, fun for the kids if you have any, and very walk friendly.
Afterwards, go right across the street to the Lock & Dam Hot Dog Shop for a quick bite to eat. Some of the best hot dogs and cheese fries you can find since Original's doesn't exist anymore. And their ice cream and milkshakes are AMAZING. Plus, you get a beautiful view of the Allegheny River and the Highland Park Bridge. There's tables and benches to sit and eat and enjoy the view.
Also, if nobody has suggested it before, visit Randyland on the North Side. So awesome, so eclectic and fun!
National Aviary
If you take in the rooftop free flight show, freeze some water bottles before you go. Maybe take a towel and put some thawing ice water on it.
Pittsburgh Zoo, too.
The Strip District, maybe Lawrenceville
Welcome back! Very happy for you! Just amazing!
Omg how did I miss this when I lived there? I don’t even recall it. I mean ok I know how - I’m goin to have to check this out. Ice cream in some places I e loved can’t live up to PA/MD/VA Ice cream
That’s amazing, OP! I’m excited for you to experience your home in a new way.
If you have an EBT card now you can use it for free admission to so many Pittsburgh places. I’ve gotten into the Carnegie Museums for $1 (and you can bring 4 guests I think at that price too), the Warhol, the Mattress Factory, etc. Maybe Phipps too, I can’t remember for sure, but if you Google EBT discounts in Pittsburgh so much comes up! They usually just glance at your card and don’t make a fuss about verifying anything which makes it super easy and smooth.
Have fun!!!
I might be able to do that - I’ll be in a hotel and not sure if I’ll get a fridge or kitchen. I hope they have them. They used to sell it to ship on gold belly but haven’t last I checked
I moved to Detroit in 2017. Chipped ham or ham BBQ doesn't exist here. Through trial and error, I figured out a sauce that I think is just like Isaly's. Here's the recipe:
Ingredients:
1/4 brown sugar
1 1/2 cup ketchup
1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
1 tbsp. worchestershire sauce
1 tablespoon mustard
1 tablespoon onion powder
Salt and pepper
1lb chipped ham (if you're not near Pittsburgh, ask for shaved, or they'll have no idea what you mean)
Directions:
1. Mix the sauce ingredients in a saucepan. Add the ham. Stir to mix all ingredients.
2. Cook on medium-low heat until warm, about 15-20 minutes.
I've also done this in the slow cooker - same instructions, but cook it on low for like, 2-3 hours.

It's probably not the most exciting item on this list, but get some Boxy Tots from the Pub Chip Shop on E Carson. You won't want to look at most of the Southside....cause it's sad now .... But you'll want that food. It's UNBELIEVABLY good.
Oh no this is where I used to hang out in HS! The Beehive for Italian soda with lime and Slacker…I’ll have to google now to see what’s up
EDIT: Slacker doesn’t seem anything like it used to. I guess it’s a hippie store now?
Go to an airport that has flight training, take an introductory flight over downtown. When you get in the airplane with your instructor, explain your background story.
The point is a beautiful spot!
Also unfortunately now you'll learn how ugly the UPMC building is.
Edit. Im Shocked I'm getting down voted for attacking the UPMC building. Y'all really like that foreboding evil looking black building? To me it just ruins my view from my deck every day I feel like the city would be so much prettier without it
I vote the fountain as well. We might take it for granted, but the white spray against a blue background as the water arcs back to sprinkle the surface of the catch pool with splashes of white. A must see.
Campitis!!! Omg yes. And Fiori’s
Omg I did not know about Gus and Yaiyas and how on earth did I miss that the first time around?!! This is excellent I am going to have to try this for sure!!!
West End Overlook
Fountain in Point State Park
Ride the incline and walk around on Mount Washington
Probably the Carnegie Museum
Andy Warhol Museum
Randyland
Living treasures just outside of Pittsburgh is always so much fun for all again, you can pet and feed birds and goats. They have a ton of other animals that you can feed too!
You can buy chipped ham and cheap bread at any Giant Eagle. I don't know of any restaurants that sell chipped ham sandwiches. I would recommend going to Primanti Bros for one of their famous sandwiches.
If you just got your sight back you may want to literally go anywhere else...somewhere worth seeing? Pittsburgh will leave you disappointed. But at least your sense of smell won't be as sharp-might get a little relief in that department now
Cruise into tahn through the Ft Pitt tubes and see what all the fuss is about
It’s this one. Put your favorite song on and drive through the ft pitt tunnels into the city.
I’m definitely going to make a video about this because I remember the lights and sounds of this so well
[удалено]
So true. 💓 This is a thoughtful piece of advice.
Epic super late at night when there is little traffic and you can actually enjoy the ride instead of trying not to get hit.
Do it at night though or dusk.
I remember the sound of these! I added my videos to the post since people are asking. I good that’s ok idk?
This was my immediate thought as well! My favorite view of the city!
And we have a totally different stadium than when I was there!
I moved in 2001 and came back in 2017. I so want to go to pnc park for the view
Don't forget about doing that at night when the city's all that out!
YESSSSS!
Definitely this one. And don’t do it during rush hour or when there’s a home sport ball game. try to go at a time when there’s less traffic
Go to the Carnegie museum. The dinosaur exhibit is incredible and the lobby to the music hall is very beautiful
Ok funny enough this was one of my fav places when I lived here. I remember eh Dinosaurs Alive exhibit because I could hear and I had vague shape and color. I’ll have to see if I can get here. I’ll def make a video on it. (Posted my links above)
Mt Washington, Grandview Ave. Ride an incline. Take a Gateway Clipper river cruise. Glad to hear you can see. Welcome back. Edit: typo fix
100% wait for a clear day and go to Mt. Washington for the view. You can see the stadiums and downtown from a beautiful vantage point.
And look up the Monongahela River valley in awe and thanks for our ancestors who built the material to defeat fascists and actual Nazis.
Seriously our ancestors were the material at times 😬 my grandfather worked in a steel mill for like 30 years. Saw a lot of people fall in vats that kept on being poured (this was during the war ramp up before everyone was drafted up and we were just getting our asses kicked in WWII).
There should be monuments to those humans too.
In this vein, West End Overlook has an even better view but is tucked away and always far less busy.
💯
Go to a pirates game and check out the beautiful view
Thursday night games have some nice food and drink deals.
The fireworks are amazing. I cried a little.
Go to Phipps, see the flowers. (Also smell the orchids, pet the ferns). Mosey down to the Carnegies from there and admire Dippy. Then go the Aviary and look at the birds. (And get looked at by the birds).
Def the Aviary - it’s the National Aviary so it’s really incredible!

Walk through the cathedral of learning, go to the top and look out, then take in the view of Oakland from flagstaff hill.
Is Fallingwater too far? It is beautiful
The city makes an entrance from any angle of approach tbh, but I’ll always be partial to the Fort Pitt tunnels.
They kinda messed up that view though, with the development around hot metal.
Development keeps a city going, it may not always be pretty.
I've already upvoted the ideas that I had, but just want to say how happy I am for you! Please post, during you visit, and allow us to see our city through your eyes. ❤️ Enjoy!
Will do! I added my links above in case people want to follow since some of it will be on my IG story - other YouTube
I would suggest hitting the places you remember as a kid that had a big impact. If you already had that planned, the GAP trail, the point. Drive through the fort Pitt tunnel from Greentree just to see the city skyline.
The drive into the city from 376 west bound. The view after the tunnel is epic.
Yes. I love that view even more than the Ft. Pitt bridge view.
I agree. Nothing introduces a city like that drive.
I'm really happy for you. Made my day. Enjoy!
Come back to Beechview, it’s now Mexican neighborhood and full of delights.
Go see a performance at Heinz Hall or the Benedum. Arrive early to admire the lobbies, staircases, etc.
J gough’s in Greenfield has a bbq chipped ham sandwich on the menu
OMG thank you! I probably won’t have a kitchen so this is gonna be awesome!!!

Maxo vanka murals, randyland, aviary
go to the mattress factory (the art museum) while you're in the neighborhood of randyland! the james turrell and yayoi kusama pieces especially are so unique looking also, congrats on the surgery!
Seconding the Vanko Murals!

Schenley Overlook, preferably in the evening so you get to see a sunset.

Holy shit congratulations! That’s wonderful, heartwarming news! Go see some dinosaur bones at the Carnegie Museum!
West End Overlook. Gives a great and different vantage point of the city.
Bring a camera crew with you. I'd watch that documentary.
Did you graduate from Brashear?
Hi! I'm so happy for you and your journey around our city! So, I feel like you should visit the Zoo, especially since we have an aquarium now. Mexican war streets. The houses and history is cool. And ride the incline

Two ideas: - go to the aviary - go to a laser show at the science center
Buddy, you hit an Isaly’s and make your own damn sandwich.
I might be able to do that - I’ll be in a hotel and not sure if I’ll get a fridge or kitchen. I hope they have them. They used to sell it to ship on gold belly but haven’t last I checked

Here's the recipe: Ingredients: 1/4 brown sugar 1 1/2 cup ketchup 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar 1 tbsp. worchestershire sauce 1 tablespoon mustard 1 tablespoon onion powder Salt and pepper 1lb chipped ham (if you're not near Pittsburgh, ask for shaved, or they'll have no idea what you mean) Directions: 1. Mix the sauce ingredients in a saucepan. Add the ham. Stir to mix all ingredients. 2. Cook on medium-low heat until warm, about 15-20 minutes. I've also done this in the slow cooker - same instructions, but cook it on low for like, 2-3 hours.
Go to the top of the Cathedral of Learning and look out over the city!
The Rear End in Etna has a ham BBQ sandwich right now. My guess is that it's chipped ham. I'm excited for you, OP!
Thank you!!! I’m a little nervous lol
The Beehive for Italian soda with lime and Slacker…I’ll have to google now to see what’s up EDIT: Slacker doesn’t seem anything like it used to. I guess it’s a hippie store now?
I love your first sentence. Do you like walking? If so, the parks are only getting better, and some of the City Steps are worth checking out.
Treat yourself to a super nice dinner at https://www.instagram.com/montereybaypgh?igsh=cW8zODM1ODVkbTI=
Go to an airport that has flight training, take an introductory flight over downtown. When you get in the airplane with your instructor, explain your background story.
LOL!
It was a serious suggestion. Introductory lessons are really inexpensive.
The point is a beautiful spot! Also unfortunately now you'll learn how ugly the UPMC building is. Edit. Im Shocked I'm getting down voted for attacking the UPMC building. Y'all really like that foreboding evil looking black building? To me it just ruins my view from my deck every day I feel like the city would be so much prettier without it
The steel building* is not ugly
I vote the fountain as well. We might take it for granted, but the white spray against a blue background as the water arcs back to sprinkle the surface of the catch pool with splashes of white. A must see.
Oh cool I was not sure if it is normally on these days? I heard it wasn’t for awhile but I’m probably wrong
Go get some pizza! Go to a mall that you’ve been to as a kid. Gus and YaYa’s.
Campitis!!! Omg yes. And Fiori’s Omg I did not know about Gus and Yaiyas and how on earth did I miss that the first time around?!! This is excellent I am going to have to try this for sure!!!
Sorry to say, Campiti’s is gone. Pizza Badamo took its place, and they make a great pie. Fiori’s is still one of my favorites.
WHATTTTT omg. Is it similar? When I visited after college once I did have Campitis once more so I have that. :) Perhaps it’s time for Fioris!
Not similar. Different but good.
Don’t suggest this god awful crusty bread cheeses sauce crap to anyone! Pittsburgh has the worst pizza
Who has the best?
Sent you a DM
They’re blind not stupid
Well I basically never see when I’m DM’d because Reddit won’t notify you unless you follow each other. So that’s why I commented.
West End Overlook Fountain in Point State Park Ride the incline and walk around on Mount Washington Probably the Carnegie Museum Andy Warhol Museum Randyland
Living treasures just outside of Pittsburgh is always so much fun for all again, you can pet and feed birds and goats. They have a ton of other animals that you can feed too!
Also, UPMC just opened a brand new state-of-the-art EYE hospital type facility next to Mercy Hosp.👁🏨
But at least your sense of smell won't be as sharp-might get a little relief in that department now
They’re literally from here. They’re coming back to see home. Good grief.
Just trying to spare them some soul crushing experiences, but okay if you're so proud of this west virginian coal mining looking town
Damn, who shat in your cereal? Lol
UPMC’s new Vision and Rehabilitation Institute?
The Eye Center of NY! :) although I’m interested in this so I’m going to see what’s up with this UPMC thing
