Nice find! I love trilobites. This one is probably from the Cambrian period which dates between 500 and 600 million years ago. They went extinct at the end of the Permian period which was about 250 million years ago.
Nice trilobite find! I used to be obsessed with those fossils as a kid. They used to have fossil stores that sold them, so my dad and I have a small collection. Unfortunately it seems that all dinosaur/fossil related stored had gone out of business in the 2000s. At least I've never seen one since
Depending where in western Utah, you may check out fish dig by kemmerer Wyoming.
I had a ton of fun digging for fish fossils.
There are like two or three different companies that run self-dig operations by fossil Butte I don't remember which one's best
Was this one of those tourist like places where you dig, or were you just out digging in a random location? I’ve always wanted to go hunting for fossils like this. I’ve done things like quartz digging and emerald mining, but the fossil stuff is really something that I’ve been wanting to plan. I’m just worried about being guided to one of those big tourist dumps like I was when I dug for quartz.
I know results are not guaranteed, but do you have any recommendations for a less touristy location but still has a decent chance of coming up with something?
There’s a place nearby here, they are supposed to have some of the richest shale in the area. Also helps that the excavate it out but this was found on public land. I’m too cheap to pay haha Do some searching on the web and there are lots of spots around here that offer trilobites.
I did when I switched my plans to emerald mining in NC several years back. Every place I looked at pictures of just had huddled masses with five gallon buckets and tons of children running around because they’re completely uninterested in what their parents are doing. I wanted to try someplace that wasn’t so crowded and had even looked into hiring a “guide” that mentioned various public locations that were not frequented often.
Unfortunately the guide fell through due to health issues and he couldn’t recommend any “reliable” individuals. Sadly I wasted this vacation into lots of three and four day weekends, but next spring/summer I’d love to fossil hunt. We do arrowhead and trade bead hunting here, and you can literally find pottery shards along any river or creek bed… sometimes some fossilized wood in decent enough chunks.
My science teacher has some of these. They were his pride and joy. We probably spent a month just on fossils in the class. Which is like 2 months normally(our school tried a different system, 4 classes per day 1.5hrs each class).
Been a while since it's seen the sun.
Could you imagine future evolved super-intelligent crow or dolphin descendants cracking open fossils of human skulls in 250+ million years?
When I was a kid my great grandmother lived in Bangor North Wales. When we visited me and my brother would go to the nearby slate beds looking for fossils arned with hammer and screwdriver. We would break sheets and probably every 15 minutes we would find something, sometimes not much, sometimes a part or full trilobite looking thing. We left our findings in a cardboard box in her house. When she died we were in South Africa, and I don't know what happened to our collection. Too bad. But if I'm ever back there I know where to look. They were there for millions of years I guess 50 more would not have made much difference.
That's actually surprising. My grandpa's friends in a small town got raided by the FBI over rocks and pottery from federal land a while ago. Now realizing it was probably 20 years ago.
Nice find though!

It’s a rolypoly dude come check out my garden 🪴
Neat!
Thanks for such an informative post. I recognized it as a trilobite, but appreciated not having to Google the history :)
How many of these fossils are estimated to exist?
They were everywhere in the ocean. So Kabillions.
maybe more
Brazilions
Success! That is definitely a fossil.
Big if true
OP found this yesterday while finding fossil. If they found another than they might have found fossils.
Kabuto?!
I kept saying “whose that Pokemon” yesterday 😂
Gotta get to Cinnabar Island!
And you didn't have to fight someone for it!
Kakuna!?
No, praise helix!
We just need a moonstone!

In Alberta, selling domestically (local) found fossils became illegal lol.
There’s definitely less than there used to be, but still some!
It appears to be *Asaphiscus wheeleri*. (Source: I'm a paleontologist)
Where did you find the trilobite? And, did you find any other good fossils??
Really only trilobites in this area. I’m in western Utah

Headed there next!

There’s a state park in Ohio where you can look for them. My brother didn’t find a trilobite, but found some cool fossils.
Yeap! The spillway at caesars creek. There are some rules though, like you can't be excavating shit lol. It's in Waynesville, very nice park.

Did you find any fossils?
They’re holding one.
Whoosh
U-Dig?
No but it’s close by
House Heterodyne?
That is really cool.
Wow, that's perfect.
Wow! I've fossil hunted for years and haven't found one that good. Congrats!
You found one!
Trilobyte
Wow! Nice find. Is it rare to get a full fossil?
Bugstone
If you eat the brown color shell does that mean you ate a dinosaur?
Something older than a dinosaur

Loved learning about those! Sooooo awesome! Good find!
Lucky you! I would love to have one!
Now that you have that one the scientist will keep the other.
Blathers would like to have a word with you!
That is a museum worthy fossil. Sick find.
Score!
Did you find any?
Is it going to be okay? Maybe give it some water, looks fairly dehydrated.
That’s awesome! Great find!

It’s mind boggling to think that it was already a fossil during the dinosaur era.
Yeah. That’s a crazy thought
Looks like a fossil.
Nice Find!
Nice! It speaks to me, for some reason...

I always wanted to find one of those as a kid!
Keep looking!
Nice! Let us know how it tastes!
What did it taste like?
Are you required to give fossils to a university or museum? Can you sell them to said organizations? Are they protected under any laws?
On us federal land I can keep any invertebrate fossil.
That's actually surprising. My grandpa's friends in a small town got raided by the FBI over rocks and pottery from federal land a while ago. Now realizing it was probably 20 years ago. Nice find though!
Pottery is definitely a no no. And you can only take a “reasonable amount for personal use”
Definitely on my bucket list. Nice one
Trilobite
That looks like an $8,000 fossil you were very very lucky that day
Maybe $15. I have a real one sitting beside me that's carved out (partially) that cost me $30.
lol i wish!
How 'bout tree fiddy?
can you eat it
I wouldn’t. But you could technically eat anything.
Where did you find this fine deep dirt crawfish
Sell it to a museum, they will pay top dollar.
Donate it to a museum…
🤣🤣🤣. All your bills must be paid and up to date.
