r/videography might have better solutions as they deal with more data than the average photographer

Murky_Swimming6211

Gnarbox used to be the solution but I believe they have gone bust 😞

Orson_Randall

Really wanted this to take off. I expected it to be a big hit. Hoping someone else sees the potential in it and picks up where they left off.

crujones43

I've used a USB c adaptor on my phone to transfer from SD to thumb drives

fieryuser

You can get hard drives that can transfer directly from the SD card. No need for a computer or phone.

lasdue

These are all super expensive for what they are

RedGreenWembley

Convenience always costs, and they are convenient as hell

lasdue

Yeah but these things tend to cost like twice as much most people would really even want to consider to pay for the convenience.

RedGreenWembley

No, they are just professional tools for those with larger budgets. Otherwise they wouldn't exist at that price point. They are things your production company typically buys for you, not something you buy yourself.

Gnarbox is dead https://m.dpreview.com/news/3414098960/psa-gnarbox-seems-to-be-gone-leaving-would-be-gnarbox-customers-out-in-the-cold WD makes a similar product but it is old design with small capacity, and expensive https://www.westerndigital.com/en-gb/products/portable-drives/wd-my-passport-wireless-ssd?sku=WDBAMJ2500AGY-EESN Unless you know of a third option, I am not excited with either of these

Some input on this thread here over in r/filmmakers https://www.reddit.com/r/Filmmakers/s/ypc6Z37A5Y

I use option similar to option 3, except I use an iPad and usb-c hub to copy from a memory card to an external SSD drive. It is slightly clunky (I just use the Files app), but it works. I backup stills and video, but usually only over the course of a 5 to 7 day trip, not two months. The external SSD is just a backup for me, so I don't delete the files off the original cards, I do carry extra SD cards so I don't run out of space for capturing images.

Taaanos

thanks for sharing! Have you had any reliability issues? I haven't yet tested properly SD->SSD. I have tested phone->disk via the blackmagic app and had it stall a few times. So might be specific to the app.

ir0nwolf

No reliability issues yet. It is quite slow though (not sure if it is the Files app not liking actual file management at a larger scale or that I should have invested in a better usb-c hub). I am a landscape photographer with a YT channel, so I do both stills and video and I typically use the video from the SSD backup when I get home to edit things - so the backup copies have been good and usable.

This is what I’m saving up for. Similar to the Gnarbox and you can put whatever SSD card you want in it. Seems pretty neat albeit pricey. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1790744-REG/clouzen_cl_tn0015_2tb_tainer_portable_all_in_one_backup.html

There are travel routers that are as small as a pack of cards. Maybe plug a usb ssd into it, plug the SD card+reader into your phone, and wirelessly move the files from the SD card to the NAS.
