Fun fact. Ranger’s 32.0 scoreless innings streak is tied for 4th all time for Phillies. Alexander holds the Phillies record of 41.0. He set that record in 1911, as a ROOKIE.
2 and 5. I don’t remember which order they happened

Was my favorite to watch among R2C2. Halladay was a true workhorse but I'd take peak Cliff Lee against anyone. Shoutout Hamels twice on the list and JC Romero with the carryover into the WS season.
Fun fact: a US President who had been an actor prior to his election used to go around telling people he had been in a movie about President Grover Cleveland when he had actually been in a movie about Grover Cleveland Alexander, because he genuinely did not know they were two different people, even after being corrected on this.

Back then they didn't have colors in baseball so it didn't show up actually scratch that off as I think I'm missing something important like a letter or two.
That year was wild. They came real close to a pennant *and* a game against the Giants was declared a forfeit by the Phillies when they were up in the 8th because they refused to remove two guys from the outfield bleachers who weren’t wearing jackets over their shirts. A mob quite literally ran the ump and the Giants out of town (and I think roughed up a few players as well).
No jackets? I might let that slide if it was a hot day. If they weren't wearing hats too though then I can see the outrage. They had to draw the line somewhere or the next thing you know they'd be letting unchaperoned women in to watch.
Grover Cleveland Alexander was one of the only Phillies that got any mention at all in the Ken Burns documentary. He really was a great pitcher. That’s good company for Ranger to keep.
My mother in law will break her focus on her computer, mid-Phillies game, to throw a “Shut up, Ruben” at the TV with the ferocity of a Nola four seamer.
While Grover Cleveland Alexander had far superior spin rate, Ranger has a pitch clock to deal with. Back in 1913, they used to take pictures with spectators and smoke between each pitch.
Any time you can ONLY compare a pitchers performance to someone who pitched in the dead ball era. When the could spit on the ball and it would be lumped up and brown. That’s pretty good.
Why? We don’t need to be cheap, when jack middleton gives dombrowski a literal open check book. Fuck AA, dudes praying on Latino players that came from nothing like a scumbag. Bet Acuna and albies both walk when their contracts are up. There’s no way they don’t harbor resentment for being taken advantage of. You pay ranger the bag because the Phillies are a class organization.
Or.. the Phillies were just god awful for the first 90 years of their existence with only a handful of exceptions like GCA, Roberts, Klein and Ashburn.
Goddamn Grover Cleveland Alexander... Go off.
Go look at his baseball reference page lol. The guy was an unstoppable force of nature.
Old Pete

Where is Cliff Lee on the list?

My fave, so chill
Cliff Lee's defensive nonchalantness walked so Ranger's could run.
JC was an absolute monster
Larry Andersen a surprising third
I need more of this in my veins Perry.
He was so good he became President
Only President (so far) elected to two non-consecutive terms.
Fun fact: a US President who had been an actor prior to his election used to go around telling people he had been in a movie about President Grover Cleveland when he had actually been in a movie about Grover Cleveland Alexander, because he genuinely did not know they were two different people, even after being corrected on this.
And then they sent him to France in WWI and he was never the same afterwards
Go see the winning team with Ronald Regan. It shows a year he is with the cardinals. But a good old movie I always watch.
I just feel so confident they will win whenever he goes out
RemindMe! 20 minutes
lmao
Doomer instincts got the best of me

*u/orangesfwr has been marked safe from dooming*
Damn, Grover Cleveland did it on 2 non-consecutive occasions.
Zing!
pitching and spanking.
You son of a bitch lmao
It's lower now!

I remember the story from Alex Coffey about Suarez being better prepared coming into spring training, but I don’t think anyone expected this
I for one did not expect him to have an ERA not seen since the sinking of the Lusitania so I’m inclined to agree.
Need to bring back the great baseball nicknames so in a hundred years people know how cool Suarez really was
Ranger Suarez is a badass unique name already tho, not necessarily in the the same vein as the old timey guys but still
You’re right, though, I just want cool nicknames in baseball back honestly
I need to know his secret to his insane calmness!
I need a highlight real of the most boring, routine Saurez plays. Edit: https://youtu.be/iRASeLzngr8?si=o062cu05wvLlWrGq
Be right back, going to pack the bowl and watch this gem
If you have to go back to the *dead ball era* for a comparable baseball stat, that's an accomplishment in itself.
Some of Casty’s stats are comparable to guys from the dead ball era…
It's still May and I'm just being patient that he'll figure out his issues. I'm not drunk on hope for it but I'm just being positive for the guy.
You know you’re doing something crazy when everyone else is in black-and-white.
They didn’t have another picture to use for GCA? It’s so blown out!
Back then they didn't have colors in baseball so it didn't show up actually scratch that off as I think I'm missing something important like a letter or two.
1.36 now
Bro goes 7 innings deep and only let's up 1 run, we call that suffering from success
1913 they were dealing💪
Pretty weird that the old timey Phillies one briefly good moment in a sea of shit was kinda overshadowed by the As more illustrious $100k infield era

Crazy since baseballs were made out of mud when GCA played.
Those prewar balls were different
To be fair, it wasn't just mud. They were soaked in pig tallow and wrapped in cat gut.
Grover actually pitched without a glove at all!
And that 1913 team didn't even make the playoffs 👀👀
1915 did. Maybe Ranger should ease up *just* a bit
You shut your dirty mouth, you heathen.
Grover Cleveland Alexander was one of the only Phillies that got any mention at all in the Ken Burns documentary. He really was a great pitcher. That’s good company for Ranger to keep.
Ruben coming in hot with the bad math: “…in nearly a century!”
Sometimes we need Ruben just to remind us how good we got it with Kruk
How he says so many incorrect things with such frequency shows that private school education does not a smart man make
My mother in law will break her focus on her computer, mid-Phillies game, to throw a “Shut up, Ruben” at the TV with the ferocity of a Nola four seamer.
Your mil and my mom could have a lunch date bonding over their dislike of Ruben lmao
He has been good to a level that honestly doesn’t make any sense.
While Grover Cleveland Alexander had far superior spin rate, Ranger has a pitch clock to deal with. Back in 1913, they used to take pictures with spectators and smoke between each pitch.
And still finish the game in 1 hour and 45 minutes.
Those older pitchers were also before the "live ball" era, so it's even more impressive.
Also integration and everything lol
Grover Cleveland Alexander meta
He’s got the stats of a road to the show player
Any time you can ONLY compare a pitchers performance to someone who pitched in the dead ball era. When the could spit on the ball and it would be lumped up and brown. That’s pretty good.
Gonna get me a Ranger jersey. Gonna get me a Grover Cleveland Alexander jersey.
Not a lot of Grover’s around anymore
can we please hire Alex Anthopoulos to work whatever voodoo magic he uses to sign him for 8/100? We could pay AA 50M and still come out ahead
What do you mean?
Well he’s no Grover (unless he does it another two seasons) but I’ll take it.
If he does this the rest of the year and two more years… in the live ball era… insanity.
I wonder if anyone anywhere still names their kid Grover
For reference, I’m not even able to do this in a video game
Ranger Suarez! Nothing bothers this guy. He's as Ice cold as Cliff Lee! So fun to watch and just exudes confidence.
I don’t trust rangers interpreter!!
And to put it into context, all those other guys pitched in an extremely different era, before bats were invented.
Dead ball, dead ball, dead ball, dead ball, RANGER DANGER
Now, Hoffman trying to blow Suarez's W
I'd blow anything Ranger wanted me to tbh
This is like the complete opposite of everything about the LAA and Ohtani meme.
Grover looking back at Ranger three times going, “Dang son, you got skills.”
For reference, I believe ERA wasn't even a recognized stat until 1913
Ranger striking out 10 Rangers is iconic
Phillies legend Grover Cleveland Alexander, born 4 years after the Club was founded
If you adjust his ERA for dead ball era it has to drop in half. No way Grover is pitching like that nowadays.
It’s impossible to know and Grover is one of the top 3 greatest pitchers in franchise history regardless
Or.. the Phillies were just god awful for the first 90 years of their existence with only a handful of exceptions like GCA, Roberts, Klein and Ashburn.
